Do you believe the Pistons would have had the same performance if Franz Wagner would have played for the Orlando Magic in game 5?
Transcript
00:00Asar with the assist.
00:01How about his stat line last night?
00:03Yeah, I mean the rebounds jump out at you for sure 15 boards 6 assists.
00:08He had 5 steals 2 blocks a very Dennis Rodman like performance and by the way
00:14multiple people in my life have made that comparison in the last week that
00:18he's this generations Dennis Rodman for the Pistons not really an offensive
00:23piece, but does everything else.
00:25Yeah, I mean well, you don't always get double-digit rebounds from him.
00:28No, I mean you used to get that was one thing you could count on from
00:31Rodman, but it's the comparison.
00:34I see is the defense obviously.
00:36Yes, we got open phone lines got a couple calls to get to and pages worth
00:41of text talking about this team as they keep the season alive last night staved
00:45off elimination John are they going to win this series because of an injury?
00:53So that's going to be the big question is
00:58how important is Franz Wagner to the Orlando Magic?
01:02Well, he's the primary Cade defender and you just saw what Cade did and he was
01:07dropping damn near 20 a night, right?
01:10And you know how important that is given how these teams have struggled at times
01:13in the series.
01:13So you also asked the question like okay, the top four players top five players in this
01:21series certainly we think Cade is number one.
01:24Yes, what is it Paulo Banqueiro Franz Wagner as Bain and then is it a star Thompson?
01:32It depends.
01:33I mean, you don't value defense, but yeah, right.
01:36So I mean at the top five players if three of them or even four of them are playing for
01:44the opponent, but then all of a sudden you take one away and it changes them offensively,
01:50but I think more importantly it changes them defensively.
01:54They're not able to put a cap on or bracket Cade.
01:57They're not able to turn or switch off with as many guys that can defend Cade.
02:05I'm not going to I am not going to say no that they win this series simply because of
02:10an injury, but how can you deny it's a huge factor because I can deny it because like I
02:18don't think they win last night at Franz Wagner place and I'm not like going to feel sorry
02:25for Orlando I'm going to know I'm going to relish in the opportunity that's in front
02:29of the Pistons to keep their season alive and they had to still go out and deliver last
02:33night Cade specifically.
02:34Yeah, I don't know.
02:35I mean, I guess the competitor in me doesn't want to believe it, but my brain says you're
02:39probably right.
02:41Do you not enjoy the win as much because Franz?
02:44Oh, no, I enjoy every minute of the win, even though I only watched the fourth quarter.
02:49I still enjoy the time before that.
02:53Do you wish he was playing?
02:56Do I want to beat him at full strength shirt that again?
02:59I don't think they would know in me.
03:00I think they would beat him at full strength.
03:01So I never never rooting for an injury, but yes, this is the gift.
03:05It is.
03:06It absolutely is a gift.
03:08And if it leads to a Pistons series win again, it goes to what does that do to the front
03:13office if you do get past the first round?
03:16Well, I don't think it does anything.
03:18Yeah, you have to have some faith that the people have a brain, you know, that they would
03:21see what happened and go.
03:22Our problems are still our problems, right?
03:24And if it just delays their elimination one more round, it still means the offseason has
03:28to have some real changes, right?
03:30I don't think this is the the 24 Tigers going into the 25 season saying, oh, we're just going
03:35to roll it back.
03:36See what happens.
03:37I do think that I give Trajan a little bit more credit than than that.
03:42We'll talk about your Tigers at 702.
03:44Let's get to the phones.
03:45Marcus in Detroit.
03:46Good morning.
03:48Morning, gentlemen and Heather.
03:50Good morning.
03:50Awesome.
03:52Last night.
03:53I was listening to you.
03:54I think you got a better chance of getting another game like that from Kate than you do
03:59Vanchero when he hit four threes in the fourth quarter just shooting over people.
04:05I don't see that happening again like that.
04:07I mean, he's a hell of a basketball player, but I don't see that.
04:10Is that only because Franz Wagner is out that you think it's more repeatable by Kate?
04:17That's the only reason.
04:18I was about to say what John just said about whether they will win if he was there or not.
04:24If they were there, if he was there, they would lose that game.
04:27I think his length is giving Kate the issue.
04:30It's not his ability to move or anything like that.
04:32He's just 6'7".
04:35And then 6'8 or whatever he is.
04:37He's got a long arm.
04:39And I think that's the biggest problem.
04:41But the thing I was most impressed with last night was Asura was everywhere.
04:45He was literally everywhere.
04:49No, he was.
04:49I mean, you look up and he's the guy with the rebound to end the possession, right?
04:53Or he's the guy that dishes the kick-out three to Cade that we played coming back.
04:58It's a steal.
04:58It's a transition.
05:00It's just being active.
05:02They were literally just giving him the shot, though.
05:05Oh, I know.
05:06I mean, anything from the free-throw line, they were just giving it to him.
05:10He just looked so awkward.
05:12I mean, he had to take some of those shots.
05:14But, yeah, I mean, we definitely know what we have to do in the offseason.
05:19And it's unfortunate that even, you know, Durham may be a casualty of what we have to do.
05:25But they have to come up with a plan to add a – to me, I mean, as much as
05:33I hate to say it,
05:34I think they need a number one scorer, not a number two scorer.
05:37Well, why isn't Cade the number one scorer?
05:40Well, if you want him to be the point guard, I don't think he should be the number one scorer.
05:45Yeah, but hold on.
05:45There's plenty of teams who their number one scorer also is a two-guard or is somebody other than their
05:52point guard.
05:52Are they saying in OKC that SGA scores a lot, but we need someone else to run the offense?
05:57No, they're letting him key the offense, right?
06:01But, yeah, SGA is a much better ball handler than Cade is.
06:04Cade is a very sloppy ball handler.
06:07I hate to say it.
06:08This dude is a beast.
06:09And downhill, ain't too many better.
06:11But as far as handling the ball, play in and play out, he needs help.
06:17He really does need help.
06:19Marcus, you call it a bunch.
06:20I know you watch and you pay attention and I'll give you the ball knower status.
06:24But I can't imagine making a phone call the day after Cade drops 45 saying they need a number one
06:28on offense.
06:30Right.
06:31I mean, they need somebody who can take the pressure off.
06:35I agree with that.
06:36I agree with that.
06:37I think that if you want him to have the ball in his hand as much as they do, then
06:42they shouldn't think or rely on him to score 25, 30 points a game.
06:47They need somebody.
06:49I mean, we have the same read.
06:51They need someone else.
06:53Everybody uses the Batman and Robin deal.
06:54And I really think that there's guys available.
06:57But like I said, I think Duren's going to be the casualty of some of those guys, like possibly Austin
07:03Reeves or Kyrie Irving.
07:05And I think anybody who we go after like that wants Duren to return.
07:10And unfortunately, as much as I like Duren, he's shown me that I don't particularly mind taking that trade off.
07:18Yeah.
07:19He's expendable.
07:20I love him.
07:21I love the dude.
07:21I mean, just watching him play this year and how hard he played and now watching him play in this
07:26series, he looks like a shell of himself.
07:28I mean, he literally looks like a deer in headlights sometimes.
07:31We're still waiting for his first double-digit rebound game of the series.
07:34Yeah.
07:35He had seven early, finished with 12 points.
07:38I know.
07:39I told you I was watching things and keeping the tabs on things and watching Cade and everything he was
07:45doing.
07:45But at the end of the first quarter, right, Duren's got seven points.
07:50And I'm thinking to myself, all right, here we go.
07:53This is going to be an opportunity for him to have that game where he finally gets the monkey off
08:00his back.
08:01And it's just, again, it's just underwhelming.
08:05A compliment to Cade would be helpful.
08:08Number one score, number two score.
08:10Let's just get another score and we'll worry about who's number one and who's number two later.
08:15Right.
08:15You can ride a hot hand assuming that player is close to his caliber and figure it out from there.
08:21He made a point in a phone call, and I did look this up.
08:24He said, Paolo's not going to make threes like that.
08:27And Paolo's not a good, outstanding three-point shooter.
08:30He only had one game all year where he made five threes prior to last night.
08:35And it wasn't even good enough.
08:37Sure.
08:38I think he felt the, hey, we don't have Franz.
08:42Let me close it out tonight.
08:44Yeah.
08:45I'm going to put it on my shoulders.
08:46I'm going to close it out tonight.
08:47And he damn near did.
08:49He said after the game, Cade and I have been doing this since AAU.
08:52Like, this isn't new.
08:54Him and I going back and forth.
08:55I think he knew, hey, I got to rise to the moment because Cade's not going to go down without
08:59a fight.
09:00Right.
09:00The difference is back home, I don't think he's going to have to score 45.
09:03I think you get more from more of the role player shooting at home.
09:06He does have a Desmond Bain, which Cade doesn't have.
09:09Right.
09:09Right.
09:10They have a Suggs, which Cade doesn't have.
09:14Well, I don't want to be the wet blanket.
09:16I loved last night, but tell me they're going to go in Orlando and win.
09:19I'm not there.
09:20No.
09:20I mean, the odds aren't in their favor, but can they do it?
09:22Sure.
09:23Yeah.
09:25248-539-9797.
09:27Phone calls, text 702.
09:28We'll update the top Jansons in the city after what happened with the Tigers.
09:32Yes.
09:33Came in chest puffed out this morning.
09:35Look at you.
09:36It's 97-1.
