Cade Cunningham had a historical performance for the Pistons in game 5 against the Orlando Magic.
Transcript
00:00yeah that was uh the best version of kade last night and uh that was a big shot the kill
00:06shot
00:06in that game as the pistons stay alive uh beating orlando last night at the palace of lca
00:13and uh brought the series now to 3-2 detroit goes to orlando to take on
00:18magic tomorrow night and gator uh what were your your overriding observations i i think overall
00:25it's just you saw a much better offensive performance from the pistons i mean for them
00:31to shoot as well as they did um that's that's pretty big um because we haven't seen them shoot
00:38that well throughout the the the series uh they've been shooting better than orlando but
00:43this was different i mean this is a team that shot 49 from the field um 36 from three although
00:49that
00:49number was higher than that for most of the game and then they missed some at the end it caused
00:54the
00:54percentage to go down but the big difference in the this is a strange game because the pistons
00:59did to orlando what orlando had been doing to the pistons roles reversed yeah they got out to leads
01:05and then orlando would chip away at it like oh come on don't it got to two points you're like
01:09please
01:09don't let this happen and then they just all right here we go dagger dagger and it was had to
01:15be
01:15frustrating as hell for orlando because they couldn't make a free throw to save their lives
01:20they shot uh 53 from the line 16 out of 30 16 out of 30 minutes 14 free throws and
01:29they lost the game
01:30by seven that's got to eat at them and i hope it eats at them the way it ate at
01:34us exactly but i i come
01:37away with this that okay orlando's been a bad shooting team and they are a bad shooting team but last
01:43night
01:43they were on fire and it didn't matter they stayed in that game all right i think it was an
01:48example of
01:49the regular season pistons showed up last night the piston team that we watched for most of the 82
01:53games that's what it looked like and and that's kind of what i expected this series to look like
01:59and you know they may still may not win it you know did something permanently change last night like
02:04are you are you did you see something that is repeatable and that they will be able to do on
02:10the
02:10road because that that piston team controlled that game and orlando's lights out three-point
02:18shooting got him back in it and at one point in the game in the third quarter they were
02:25uh where was it um 16 of i'm sorry they were i lost my note here 10 of 18 from
02:35three in the third
02:35quarter they were 10 of 18 from three and then they missed like eight of their next 10 three-pointers
02:41and the pistons pulled away made it a 15-point lead then they got hot again orlando's three-point
02:47shooting kept them in that game now the free throws that's probably an anomaly and as as their
02:52three-point shooting i mean they were over 50 last night from beyond the arc i believe um or close
02:59to
02:59it they were 17 of 38 so they were close to it you know they're going to make more free
03:04throws in
03:04game six they're probably not going to shoot that well from three and and kate and bancaro probably
03:09aren't going to go for 45 points but at the end of the day that resembled a more of a
03:14piston game
03:15that we're accustomed to yeah i i wouldn't be surprised if cater bancaro threw up over 40 again
03:21i think those guys are absolutely capable of it and you know for orlando that was that was their
03:25offense it was give it to bancaro he's either going to drive and make the shot or he's going to
03:30kick it
03:30out to uh to bane or to black and either one of those guys is going to launch a three
03:35-pointer and
03:35knock it down it was um it was fun to see the other team get frustrated for a while yes
03:42and they
03:43were frustrated and i don't think orlando can play that well offensively again in the series but they
03:50can play better defensively because we've seen it probably and we've seen it consistently where
03:53they're better defensively against the pistons than what we saw from them last night so game six
03:57is going to be interesting but game five uh last night was it was pretty electric the crowd was
04:04into it as they should have been and they got into it for two reasons because k just kept making
04:10shots which was great and made every free three was 14 of 14 from the line but asar thompson
04:17owned the crowd last night his hustle from beginning to end he played 36 minutes in this game and grabbed
04:2515 rebounds had six assists as well in this game five steals and a couple of blocks and there were
04:33plays that what was the shooting for the field three for five okay he was basically just hanging
04:39around the rim and you know some tip ins and stuff like that yeah but it was what he did
04:44defensively
04:45and the effort that was there even in plays where he wouldn't come away with a steal or didn't get
04:50the
04:50rebound it was his contesting of that yeah that got the crowd into it like they really fed off of
04:56that
04:57and his teammates fed off of that so if he wasn't going to get the rebound but he was tipping
05:01it and
05:01keeping it alive somebody else would somebody else would all of a sudden snag it or if he's hustling
05:05for a loose ball and you've got all these scrums i mean at the very least it was just eating
05:10up more
05:10time yeah and time was so precious to orlando in the end because they they were running out of it
05:16and
05:16they needed to to launch shots quickly and they just couldn't get it done i'm gonna i'm gonna give
05:21you what i think is a critical critical statistic in this series critical a critical statistic in this
05:27series and this is each game from from game one to game five orlando's offensive rebounds which i've
05:33been harping on and second chance points they've gone 11 13 14 16 8 yeah okay it was getting worse
05:45every game and then last night the pistons locked them down now part of that is to be fair and
05:53you made
05:53a very valid point that three point shots lead to longer rebounds they didn't miss a ton of freeze
05:58because they were making a ton of threes but the offensive rebounding for orlando was significantly
06:06reduced last night by the piston well and right away in the first quarter the pistons out rebounded
06:10orlando 17 to 8 7 to 3 on the offensive glass that's why they had this 12 point lead 38
06:16to 26 and
06:17they were just all over the place smothering them and then of course orlando comes storming back in the
06:22second quarter that's when kate really got off kate had 20 points in the in the uh in the in
06:28the
06:28second quarter bancaro had 12 um but look the pistons still missed opportunities they missed i think two
06:34or three layups they probably shouldn't have missed but they did they still turned the ball over too many
06:40times it was a little bit better but not much not much and in the first quarter they got away
06:45with
06:45it because they were so good offensively but they had three awful turnovers in the first quarter
06:49two by kate and one by jalen duran they were just horrible turnovers kate cross-court pass yeah i
06:55mean no sense no no need for that um but they were able to to persevere and get through that
07:01and now
07:02they've they've got this game six right in front of them kang you brought up something i paid a special
07:06attention to to see if they could correct it and you tell me if you saw the same thing did
07:11their spacing
07:12not look way better last night so when the double teams got ran a k there were options no it
07:17did look
07:17better it did look better that was a nice adjustment to see and uh it's game five so i'm a
07:22little upset
07:22it took this long but yeah sure you know and it wasn't at all times i think there was one
07:26time when
07:26k got doubled the top of the key and turned it over right there's no one there yeah but because
07:31they i think he just left them like he's like well you're doubled and you don't want during the guy
07:35to be the only guy on the topic well when he went to try to pass it the ball got
07:39tipped and during
07:39couldn't get to and then during ends up getting called for a foul on that too while he's trying to
07:43get to
07:43the ball but but yeah you know they're gonna do that to you they're gonna do it all game six
07:47you'd be damn sure they're gonna double team kade throughout game six yeah look i mean it's they've
07:52made themselves vulnerable to still like the first round upset is still massively in play here but
07:58you know i have to think that the pistons their adjustments they have they they got to feel good
08:04going down to orlando about the way that they played and that they were able to answer finally
08:08what orlando was doing to them and and you know and it wasn't just that the pistons like shot an
08:15absurd
08:15percentage or anything like that they were getting better shots they moved the basketball
08:19well they reacted to what orlando did defensively they got orlando in some early foul trouble yeah
08:25there's a lot of a lot of good stuff that happened last night and you know that kind of goes
08:30now i feel
08:31like the pistons have played 83 games like that you know they played the regular season and then one
08:35game like that in the postseason i'll give uh i want to give jb bigger staff some credit because i
08:39thought
08:40he definitely had his team ready to play you know the players said we're going to be ready to play
08:45well they were ready to play and give credit to jb for that but the other thing i wanted to
08:48say for him
08:49is in the fourth quarter there were two instances where pistons had a huge lead and then orlando
08:55started to chip away at it and looked like it was going to go the other direction i thought he
08:58made
08:58two really good timeouts one at 926 the pistons were up 96 to 86 but they were up like 18
09:05and then it
09:05gets down to 10 takes a timeout team kind of regroups and they come up and then they adjusted
09:11well then it got again it was a similar situation they built the lead back up and then it got
09:15down
09:15it was 110 101 with 352 to go calls a timeout and kind of calms the guys down and just
09:22kind of
09:22re-emphasizes what they had to do here in the last four minutes of the game and they were able
09:27to to get
09:28it done 248-539-9797 all right fans what'd you see what stood out to you and is it is
09:35it repeatable
09:36did something permanently change last night it's karshan anderson we got open lines want to hear
09:42from you as uh pistons stave off elimination against the magic uh we will get your phone
09:49calls and feedback coming up here on karshan anderson on 97 one
