What do the Pistons need to do to win the series against the Orlando Magic?
Transcript
00:01can the Detroit Pistons pull out of this?
00:06Can they pull out of this?
00:10Look, they haven't had long stretches of great play.
00:14They had the third quarter in game two.
00:18They had the fourth quarter in game three.
00:21Outside of that, it's hard to argue that Orlando has been anything but the better team.
00:25And I don't even know what we need to argue it.
00:27Question is, can Detroit change that?
00:30And I feel like they can, and it all has to be on the defensive end.
00:34Yes, Orlando's going to make things difficult on Detroit on the offensive end.
00:37They've got a good game plan, a good plan of attack.
00:42What's weird to me is how Detroit has done a poor job at that end of the floor, A,
00:47and B, you know, the box outs, closing out on three-point shooters, all this stuff.
00:54It matters, and it was what they were good at, and it's just not happening.
01:00As consistently as it did during the regular season.
01:03Regarding the Lions draft, from Twitter, J.R. writes in,
01:07favorite is either the fifth-round pick, is either fifth-round pick, excuse me.
01:11Both may have been undrafted and have high upside.
01:16Least favorite is Jimmy Roller.
01:17Always appeared slow to me.
01:19Both may have been undrafted and have high upside, but those are your favorite picks
01:23when you think they might have gone undrafted?
01:26That's weird.
01:27From PG Stipe, Blake Miller's selection always makes me take a breath
01:32and puts an optimistic light on returning the offense.
01:38Bailey says, favorite pick, Keith Abney.
01:40Fun player with starting upside and obviously a great value considering the Lions
01:44had at least a third-round grade on them.
01:47Least favorite, honestly, Derek Moore.
01:48Even though I'm excited for him, I preferred Young or Ackis plus the trade.
01:56But I'm glad they had the option to pick all three.
01:59So we know for sure they like Moore better, as I trust their judgment.
02:03I also like that they chose some players that lean towards the pass rush
02:07rather than the traditional run defense emphasis.
02:10Well, there is that.
02:11And I do like the point that they...
02:14What I feel better about with Derek Moore than I did initially when they drafted him
02:19is that they did have the conviction to move up to get him.
02:23They clearly thought he was the best guy available, and that's the one that they wanted.
02:27We can't let them get to...
02:29If Baltimore picks, they're going to take him.
02:32Baltimore's got all these ties to Michigan football, then that's what's going to happen.
02:36They don't want it from Baltimore.
02:37Right.
02:37Let's get ahead of that and make sure that we get our guy.
02:41And I appreciate that.
02:43If you've got conviction, I say it all the time in the draft,
02:45you've got a guy you love and you don't want to let slip, go get him.
02:48And the Lions did.
02:51248-539-9797.
02:52Let's go to Floyd in Detroit.
02:54You're next.
02:55What's up, Floyd?
02:56Hey, guys.
02:57How you doing?
02:58We're good, Floyd.
03:00The reason why the Pistons were so successful during the regular season
03:04was because they developed a model.
03:07That model was defensive intensity.
03:09But that defensive intensity was based on utilizing a large percentage of the bench.
03:16Now, what has happened now in the playoff, game one, they barely used the bench at all.
03:24And in game one, they had very little or no defense intensity.
03:28So, it's important for them to play in the playoff the way they played during the regular season.
03:36Two reasons.
03:37Number one, because they can sort of counteract this theory that it's not a Robin to Cage Batman.
03:46They scored a lot of points based on turnovers during the regular season.
03:52That defensive intensity, though, makes it mandatory that they play a large percentage of the bench.
03:58Game one, they played almost no bench at all.
04:02And there's one of the issues also.
04:06Cade has to play with a tremendous amount of intensity all the time because he's a model for the rest
04:12of the guys on the team.
04:14So, I mean, that's the key.
04:16The key is they've got to play.
04:18They've got to go with a lot of their bench and get their bench and a chance of developing, to
04:23grow.
04:24And next year, they've got to get Beasley back because Beasley was the second-best three-point scorer the last
04:32year he played, which was last year's season.
04:35Yeah, he didn't shoot it well in the postseason.
04:38Duncan's shooting it well in the postseason.
04:40It would be good to – you know, that's an offseason discussion, and we'll get into that as the offseason.
04:44I actually think they got more minutes off the bench in game one than any other game so far.
04:50No.
04:51No.
04:51That's wrong.
04:52You should look that up.
04:53I am looking it up right now.
04:54I'll just start doing a quick math because I'm not sure you're right about that.
04:58They didn't play the bench much at all game one.
05:01And, you know, it's like – but they need the bench because they need to maintain that defensive intensity throughout
05:07the entire game.
05:09That way, they wear out three-point shooting teams because of the intensity.
05:14Well, the one thing – I think there's a misnomer here.
05:17The thing is, the Pistons' defense is doing their job.
05:21Orlando's not shooting well in this series.
05:23They're shooting under 41% from the field in this series.
05:27The Pistons are actually, as a team, they're shooting better, but they need to shoot much better.
05:31The problem comes with the turnovers.
05:34This team is committing 17 turnovers a game.
05:37It's three more than what Orlando's doing.
05:39So, let's get converted into fast break points or whatever.
05:43The free throw attempts, you know, it's actually surprising that it's even.
05:49With 28 free throw attempts for both teams, the Pistons actually have a few more free throw attempts in this
05:57game – or in this series.
05:59But Orlando's making a little bit higher percentage of those.
06:03And offensive rebound-wise, Orlando has the edge over the Pistons.
06:07That's where it's showing up.
06:09And that's where I think their defense is lacked.
06:12A big part of that is you've got to box out and you've got to get those misses.
06:16When they get more opportunities, their shooting percentage is less relevant because they're getting an offensive rebound and getting second
06:21-chance points.
06:22And there were free runners on multiple occasions yesterday and a huge offensive rebound came late in that game from
06:29Wendell Carter.
06:30And that is disturbing.
06:34And, you know, when it happens when you're down 11, you're down 13, it feels like they're in a give
06:38-up mode.
06:39And then in the end, one or two of those possessions really cost them.
06:44CJ, on a cell, you're next.
06:45Hi, CJ.
06:47Hey, guys.
06:48Thanks for taking the call.
06:49Sure.
06:50The bench guys definitely played in game one, but I'll get off of that.
06:56I don't think that there's something that they're not doing correct.
07:00I think more so it's just the Magic just match up well with the Pistons.
07:05They were a team that I was worried about them facing in the first round.
07:09Regardless of the regular season record versus the Magic, they're a better team now that Franz is playing.
07:16He's coming off injury, and that kind of changes things for them.
07:20So I think the problem is, you know, it's just a tough matchup for the Pistons with Mancaro and the
07:26shooters that they have and Wendell Carter shooting it from the three.
07:29You know, they're able to pull those guys out the paint and create free lanes to the basket.
07:34With that being said, as far as Jalen Duren, JB has to figure out, he has to make some adjustments
07:42to get him a little more involved.
07:44The Magic are simply just playing drop coverage, and we're not able to get those lobs that we normally get
07:51at the basket or hard rolls to the basket for Jalen Duren.
07:54So if JB can make some adjustments and figure out a way to create some space for Jalen Duren, I
08:01think we'll be fine.
08:02But ultimately, you know, the NBA playoffs are about matchups, and I think the Magic just match up well with
08:11the Pistons, and that's why they're struggling a little bit, in addition to the return of Franz Wagner.
08:16So that's all I got.
08:17The return of Franz Wagner and them being healthy, they look like the team they were supposed to be most
08:22of the regular season.
08:23This was a team that had the third-highest win total in Vegas going into the season.
08:27They're supposed to be there in the end at the East.
08:29They suffered injuries.
08:31Franz Wagner missed a bunch of time.
08:34Suggs missed a bunch of time.
08:36And they're clicking on all cylinders.
08:38It's incumbent upon the Pistons to take them out of their offensive flow.
08:43And when they force misses, get them to stop.
08:46I just did the math on the bench.
08:48They've used the bench plenty.
08:4979 minutes in the first game.
08:5079 minutes in the second game.
08:5268 minutes last night.
08:55They've been using the bench.
08:57It's just that guys off the bench or even starting, like, starter-wise, Duren's not doing what he did.
09:04Bench-wise, Dennis Jenkins isn't doing what he did.
09:08And also, the lineups and rotations with the bench has been different than it was during the regular season.
09:13A lot of these guys haven't had a ton of minutes together that he's putting out there during the postseason.
09:17So, he's using the bench differently, though.
09:20And I feel like he's still, in real time, trying to figure out what combination works because...
09:25And it's compared to Duren's 27 and almost outproduced in those seven minutes.
09:29Something you may need to look at.
09:32It's hard to believe that Paul Reed might be really an answer here for Duren, but they're in a survive
09:41-and-advance type of place where they're not in the business of getting Jalen Duren minutes.
09:46They're in the business of winning games.
09:48Yeah, I don't think Paul Reed's a guy who needs to play 20 minutes a game.
09:50But Paul Reed playing, like, 10 to 12 minutes a game is a guy who gets you a lot of
09:56production in that time.
09:57He grabs rebounds and he scores points when he's in there.
10:01248-539-9797.
10:03Carson Anderson, 97-1.
