Do you need to see anything differently from the Pistons in game 2?
Transcript
00:00all right so the Pistons win game one 111 to 101 built an 18 point lead uh a 15 to
00:093 run in the
00:10first quarter helped that and uh no first quarter turnovers for the Pistons and six for the Cavs
00:17and and we've done we've done the show that's probably being done in Cleveland today we've
00:22done the same show quit turning the ball over you can you can rest assured that that is a big
00:28talking point in in Cleveland right now and we're you know as we said during the Pistons series
00:36it's easier said than done you just think you have to value possessions be less careless
00:44and you wonder how can a team possibly be careless in the postseason in the playoffs with so much on
00:49the line and some of it is forced by the opponent I think in both teams cases both Detroit and
00:55Orlando Orlando did it to Detroit and Detroit did it to Cleveland you got to credit the other
01:01team's defense but still there's certain turnovers that the defense didn't do much but like when
01:07that that exchange where I think uh Cade hit a three Cleveland maybe got out to those up three and
01:13Cade
01:13Cade hit a three and Asar just stripped I can't remember who it was it was bringing the ball up
01:19the
01:19floor but took it in for a dunk like that those that that's a turnover that the Pistons earned like
01:24they forced that then there's other ones where like the Cavs just throw it out of bounds so you're
01:29going to try and cut down on that Harden talked about a postgame um what are the Pistons trying to
01:35better in game two that they didn't do as much of in game one and one of the things that
01:39comes up
01:39sorry I'm answering the question not even giving you my chance but one of the first bullet points is
01:43Cade didn't shoot it well and do they do anything different in terms of trying to get Cade better
01:50looks or anything like that or do we even care about that like of course we want Cade to shoot
01:54it well and we suspect that through the course of a normal game he will shoot it better than he
01:58did
01:58six of 19 I believe he was in game one but do you need to do anything differently or just
02:02Cade's
02:02going to be Cade I want the Pistons to attack inside I want them to do what they've done in
02:07the
02:08regular season and that is points in the paint I want them to light them up for over 60 points
02:12in the
02:12paint live inside there and they have to respect that and you've got a number of guys that can
02:19either penetrate to do that whether it's Cade Cunningham or Danis Jenkins can do that uh Asar
02:24Thompson or if you got somebody's going to post up Tobias posts up Duren can post up um even
02:30beef stew can post up when he's in there for his limited minutes and of course all that leaves open
02:35some outside shooting from Duncan Robinson if they start to to honor that and um they're going to have
02:41to keep them honest but I think the Pistons can can have that advantage the other thing that we we
02:45saw
02:46in game one is how completely ineffective a team can be when they've got some foul trouble
02:52Jared Allen was outstanding in game seven against Toronto and was complete no show in game one
02:58against the Pistons why because he picked up three fouls in the first quarter picked up his fourth and
03:04then he was basically done he had he only played 18 minutes in the game only scored two points and
03:08grabbed three rebounds that's one of their bigs that's what they thought they may have had an
03:12advantage not so much in the first game so attack that force them to come over and guard you and
03:17if
03:17they're going to have to be physical they're going to have to pay the price I suspect that Cleveland's
03:23going to do a lot to get Donovan Mitchell going and have him yes I think Donovan Mitchell in this
03:28game
03:29is if I were to predict like I don't even know what the over and under on his points is
03:33I suspect that
03:34there's going to be a big Donovan Mitchell game and Detroit's going to have to either account for that or
03:38counter that or whatever I mean sometimes you go let him get his we'll just make sure nobody else
03:44really hurts or hurts you one of the things that I loved about game one that I absolutely loved about
03:50game one that I think might be a sign of growth is postseason a response to a run right so
04:02they James Harden went on a nine nothing run by himself to tie the game at 93
04:09Pistons scored on their next six possessions and I'm not sure that happens if they didn't go through
04:19with Orlando it might it might I mean the team responded to runs in the regular season but the
04:24postseason being a different animal you get down three to one you essentially spend you know the
04:31next three games under pressure under heavy pressure and you kind of grow calluses postseason calluses you
04:39get used to it and that's a time where you ask you know people when one team goes on a
04:46nine nothing
04:46run with a star player tying the game late the Pistons have controlled like the whole game and suddenly a
04:52nine nothing run by Harden and the game is tied people think that Cleveland's gonna close this
04:57out Detroit's gonna fold here and they didn't now maybe maybe Piston fans didn't think that but
05:02you know that's that's a response that I love seeing and I wonder if that is a product of getting
05:06used to postseason pressure I think I'm sure it has a huge role into it I think I think game
05:11six
05:13taught them a bunch of lessons that you're never out of it so they can be up by 18 points
05:18and feel
05:18pretty confident about that even when the score gets whittled down from 18 to nothing
05:23they're like that's okay even if we had to play from behind we can play from behind we prefer not
05:28to thank you six straight scoring possessions like you said and it basketball is a game of runs and
05:35the Pistons aren't and you know any different they can get on runs too and that's what happened there
05:39they didn't shoot incredibly well during the course of the game I think their shooting percentage
05:43was around 44 percent Cleveland was I think right around the same thing maybe 45 percent and it's
05:50it just they've been kind of consistent consistently at that point somewhere between 42 and 45 percent
05:57throughout the playoffs at this point it's their defense that leads the day you know and the biggest
06:03difference in game one and why the Pistons won is because the Pistons got to the free throw line
06:08they made what 10 more free throws than than Cleveland did and that's their 12 more that's the
06:13the difference in the game they they won by 10 and they had 12 more free throws Pistons went 27
06:18for 35
06:19Cleveland went 15 of 16 so you know you don't want to put Cleveland on the line because they
06:23knocked down their free throws but the Pistons they got it in volume and they actually knocked
06:27down a pretty heavy percentage as well it wasn't you know 15 out of 16 but was good enough
06:32it was first of all it was nice to watch a game where if they lost they weren't eliminated from
06:37the playoffs that was weird I gotta be honest with you I was so used to them like every game
06:41when they were down 3-1 moving forward like tense gripping the couch you know like every possession
06:47every miss free throw I mean like Vinny Goodwill so they were down three and a half to one yeah
06:51but
06:51the funny thing is you get to the point where you're like everything that goes wrong you're like
06:55that's gonna cost them their season yeah so you're right it's nice to watch a game where they I didn't
07:01say that's gonna cost them their season if they did something wrong so with that being said
07:04I like the fact that I think they actually I've been stressing so much that playoff basketball is
07:10different from regular season basketball right but I felt like game one was regular season basketball
07:14for the Pistons like that's how they play they lean on their defense Kate doesn't have to carry you
07:19every every step of the way because you get contributions from the rest of the team all five
07:23starters and double double digit scoring throwing Jenkins double digit off the bench that's how this
07:28Piston team was built during the regular season and they were able to carry that over to game one
07:33they got a lot of free throws because they were aggressive they they attacked the paint that's
07:37what they do Jalen Dern didn't have his typical 19 points but he got his dunks he's got his putbacks
07:41at the end of the game which is what you want I think Pistons just continue doing what they did
07:47in
07:47game one Donovan Mitchell complained about the free throws this guy doesn't get to the line in general
07:52this playoffs during the playoffs in game seven games versus uh the Raptors he went to the line I think
07:57I'm looking at right game one he went to the line seven times game two once game three zero four
08:03two zero and then two he didn't so he doesn't get to the line because he does that's not his
08:09game he's
08:09not a flopper he has a three-point shot he does the floaters in the lane so and that's not
08:14a knock on
08:15Mitchell I actually appreciate that but he he saw what you saw Gator the Pistons had way more free
08:21throw attempts than they did they're working the reps a little bit and that's fine but I think what
08:24I want from Pistons is the same as game one contributions from everybody what do you want
08:30to see tonight more of that we didn't see in game one two four eight five three nine 97 97
08:36in the
08:37meantime uh NBA player poll really interesting question and we want to know if you agree with
08:43what the players had to say that at 10 50 here on Carson Anderson on 97 one
