00:05the Giants first-round picks last night shattered everybody's mock drafts like a
00:10March Madness bracket so let's see how the Arvel Reese and Francis Mawinoga
00:15picks grayed out with our NFL reporter for the post Ryan Dunleavy alright Ryan
00:20let's start with Arvel Reese because him going to the Giants at five I don't
00:26think was on anyone's mock draft at any point of you doing your due diligence and
00:31digging up for some draft information was Arvel Reese at five ever brought up yeah
00:39in the last two days before the draft never in the months before but in the
00:43last two days it kind of became a scenario and I'll tell you what never came up is
00:48Carnell Tate at four to the Titans they just there was a scenario where the
00:52Titans took Sonny Styles at four and the Giants had Reese left at five and that's
00:59where I wrote a story for the post on Wednesday I think about oh that's where
01:03they would start to get trade calls if Reese was there at five and the Giants
01:08just said no we don't need to make a trade we'll just pick the guy so yeah it
01:12was a late scenario where either pass rusher that the Jets didn't take it to
01:16would slip to five if the Cardinals went love and the Titans went somebody from
01:22Ohio State and that's just exactly what happened but I'll tell you this Brandon
01:26inside the building they felt like they hit the lottery with Reese slipping to
01:30five they he was the not number one non-quarterback on their board and in
01:34their own mock drafts they didn't have him get to five very often all right well
01:38here's John Harbaugh on how Arvel Reese what like what position he's going to
01:43play and how they plan on using him in Denard Wilson's defense yeah recent he's
01:51uh Arvel is a versatile player and we're going to play inside backer will linebacker
01:57our defense is pretty flexible you know positionless you might call it and have
02:02an opportunity to move those guys around but he'll line up they'll line up next to
02:07uh Tremaine and uh and he'll be he'll be in the a gap the b gap the c gap the
02:13d gap off
02:14the edge and he'll be moving around with all of our guys uh Abdul and Brian and Kayvon
02:20uh and and Tremaine and we'll be running we'll be running games and picks and stunts and different
02:26things like that and passing situations and he's good in coverage as well he's a versatile
02:30player he's a young player uh he's gotten better every single year playing off the ball and
02:36on the ball so he does both probably why he's he was our highest rated uh player non-quarterback
02:41player in the draft uh he's he's an exciting player we are fired up to have him
02:48all right so when you break it down you see you hear Harbaugh excited about using this guy
02:53as a as a Caleb Downs but on the second level a utility type player trying to stop that run
02:59does it make does that pick now make sense for the Giants defense
03:05yeah I think so I think it makes a lot of sense actually because um you can play him at
03:10will
03:10linebacker which was Micah McFadden spot but he's only signed for a year uh he's a much better fit
03:16next to Tremaine Edmonds than Sonny Stiles would have been uh I had heard that you know Stiles and
03:21Edmonds as a pair might have had some trouble getting off blocks without a great defensive tackle
03:27aka Dexter Lawrence in front of them Reese is a much more freelancing uh player who can uh has
03:34no problem getting off blocks explosive and then you can play him and get impact from him at linebacker
03:40as he learns edge which is what most people think will be his best position and maybe he's a starting
03:46edge for you next year or two years down the road when Kayvon Thibodeau is not on this team
03:51well Rich Eisen kind of brought that up on the broadcast and told kind of told people to keep
03:56an eye on what the Giants could do with Kayvon throughout the course of this draft do you think
04:01the Arvel Reese pick kind of like do you think the Arvel Reese pick can affect like the Kayvon
04:08Thibodeau situation do you think teams now call the Giants to try and trade for Kayvon
04:15teams have been calling they just haven't been willing to meet the Giants price of a day two pick
04:20uh what could affect it is so no Harbaugh kind of scoffed at the idea like no we want to
04:25keep
04:25Kayvon Thibodeau and I believe that's true like they're you don't just give away a good player right
04:30the Giants traded Dexter Lawrence they got the number 10 pick they held out for what they wanted
04:34um I think if they got a day two pick they would trade him uh I think two things that
04:40could happen
04:41today maybe some team somewhere whiffs on edge rusher in the first round and in the second round and says
04:47oh you know what I don't like these third round edge rushers let's let's give up our third round pick
04:51for Kayvon that could work and if the Giants were to trade up that's something I've heard a little
04:56bit about today Brandon that the Giants could trade up from 37 to 33 34 35 something like that uh
05:04make a small trade up that might cost them their fifth round pick so they'd be looking at
05:08going from like I don't know pick 34 to like 160 something without making a pick that could be a
05:16case because they'd have to give up their fifth rounder to move up a couple spots that could be a
05:20case where maybe the Giants would settle and take a fourth round pick for Kayvon Thibodeau
05:24to get back into the draft Francis Maui Noga at 10 that was a selection that got a mixed reaction
05:33on social media and the entire fan base but you know Giants fans can't agree on anything these days
05:38but it was the Malik neighbors reaction that's gone viral and been all over my timeline since I woke up
05:45here's Leak on the live stream and then let's talk Maui Noga at 10.
05:52Bro Leak like this
05:56it's either you all right hey bro I'd rather get downs and play against downs that's what I'm saying
06:03so you're this is a understand Jackson Jackson did mention that he wanted an offensive lineman in
06:10this draft but with this with him playing a line is he going to play inside we had we just
06:19play a
06:19aluminum we just we got KT on that side so he has to play guard okay but a lot of
06:25his film at Miami is
06:26not guard I mean do you do you feel Malik's frustration there do you think the Giants are
06:34going to look back and regret passing on Caleb Downs for Maui Noga at the 10th pick
06:41uh yeah probably uh I do I feel his frustration uh I'm stunned that the Giants passed on Caleb Downs
06:49twice I thought he was a very strong possibility to be number five uh when he was still there at
06:5510
06:55I thought they hit the jackpot they didn't do it uh now he's in the Cowboys so they have to
07:00face him
07:01twice a year shades of Micah Parsons uh after the Giants passed on him Sonny Stiles who they passed on
07:07another common mock draft pick is with the Commanders they'll have to face him twice a year
07:11uh I feel Malik neighbors pain yeah uh I think Malik neighbors was pretty outspoken last night too uh
07:18thought that you know thought that uh Arvel Reese was a repetitive pick thought that uh Downs was
07:24his guy he clearly wanted wasn't thrilled about the idea the Giants might take a receiver at five
07:30which would have probably been Jordan Tyson uh Malik uh was handed a lot of play calling and
07:36decision making power by Brian Dayball when he first got here John Harbaugh might want to tell him
07:41that's not the way it's going to be anymore all right so the Maui Noga pick plays right tackle
07:47he could play guard they just re-signed right tackle Jermaine Illuminor to a two-year deal I believe
07:53what how does that three three-year deal how does this now affect the Jermaine Illuminor situation
08:01uh I don't think it does right now like I think you plug in Maui Noga as your right guard
08:07uh yeah I think it's obvious now Greg Van Roten won't be coming back uh gonna be hard for Evan
08:14Neil even to make this roster uh the plan is for Maui Noga obviously to win the starting right guard
08:19job uh but I think down the road I mean some people say Maui Noga is an all pro caliber
08:26guard
08:27if you have an all pro caliber young guard you're probably not going to mess with that
08:31when Illuminor is not on this team I mean two a three-year contract is usually two years guaranteed
08:36so you figure he'll be here 2026 2027 now we'll go maybe he's your right tackle in 2028 if he's
08:42you
08:43know hasn't adjusted well to right guard if he's an all pro right guard you just leave him you worry
08:47about right tackle then I don't think it impacts Illuminor too much right now I think he's the
08:51starting right tackle Maui Noga is the right guard he has the right attitude about playing any of the
08:56five positions on the offensive line so I think they'll be they'll just be a tandem and honestly I
09:01think the Giants could have their best offensive line they've had since they won their last Super Bowl
09:05all right last but not least go ahead and uh grade out the Giants first round
09:12I would say it's an A- uh I would give the Reese pick an A I would give the
09:18Maui Noga pick a B or a B
09:20plus just because again I think I would have went with Caleb Downs but I get look John Harbaugh Prye
09:26was
09:26not coming out of the first round of the draft without somebody who weighed 300 pounds on either side of
09:32the line that's just the kind of smash mouth football he wants to play so I get it you can
09:37never go wrong think defaulting to offensive line there were nine of them taken last night in the
09:43first round across the league so I get it uh B plus I mean I thought they hit a absolute
09:49grand slam
09:50in last year's uh draft with Dart and Carter I would say this is more like a two-run homer
09:56all right Ryan Dunleavy appreciate you hopping on with this this morning
10:01thanks Brandon
