00:05they got this guy with the 37th overall pick that was my initial reaction when the Giants
00:11grabbed 5 foot 11 193 pound corner Colton Hood out of Tennessee I mean this is a guy we had
00:17going in the first round in a lot of our New York Post mock drafts so I believe John Harbaugh
00:22and
00:22Joe Shane when they said that he was the number one player on their board when they were on the
00:27clock at 37 4 4 4 4 4 1 40 guy and he's that prototypical John Harbaugh type corner likes
00:37to play a lot of press man likes to get hands on at the line of scrimmage and he's going
00:41to get
00:42physical against the run I feel like Denaro Wilson just got his corner for the future in the second
00:48round now I think he's going to have some work to do to get caught up to NFL speed quickly
00:55because
00:55he hasn't played a lot of football only 13 career starts in three years before a kid with only 13
01:02start my man takes the football away and he's been productive 14 pass breakups three INTs a forced
01:10fumble and two defensive tutties in two years most importantly since he's a former center fielder
01:17he knows how to track and play the football down the field Giants secondary needed a guy that's
01:23comfortable doing that so let's break down what makes Colton Hood a great fit for Wilson's defense
01:29and this blue rush post-draft player spotlight ladies and gentlemen the Hood era just came to
01:37East Rutherford that's Colton Hood now I was around this guy the other day when the Giants got him in
01:43the building for the first time 5 11 but he has extremely long arms and I imagine that that helps
01:50him
01:50with one of the things that he loves to do and that's play press man and be all in the
01:56receiver's
01:56face at the line of scrimmage let's watch gets his hands in there gets his head back let's break it
02:03down a little bit because when you go up against and it's a long limbed corner doesn't you don't have
02:10to be a Richard Sherman six foot three you don't have to be like Rick Woolen and uh be six
02:16four if you're
02:17a long limb meaning you got long arms and you trust your speed you can be a a a a
02:25mother bleeper
02:26at the line of scrimmage for a receiver especially if they have bad technique so watch how his
02:32aggressiveness what this does in terms of making this such a hard throw for the quarterback
02:39and him being able to get his eyes back and play the football so this receiver we're the plus two
02:45split
02:46we call this plus two from the numbers bottom of the numbers top of the numbers all depends on
02:50where you're at so let's call this the bottom of the numbers plus two look at where the point of
02:57contact is for this football when when when they make a play on the ball so plus two split he
03:04gets
03:04hands-on gets his outside arm on there gets into the chest receiver is able to finally break free but
03:11what that does instead of allow instead of us getting some sort of clean release and being able to
03:18shave the fat to for this quarterback to throw it maybe up and over for us to win on our
03:27release
03:28this now forces a receiver to go wide and when you get wide that allows a db to play over
03:34the top
03:36and to stay in phase this could be a goal route and the the rules of a goal route if
03:43you beat him
03:43you're throwing it up and over if he's over the top then you're going to throw the back shoulder fade
03:49but by him doing such a great job of staying in phase staying in contact with this wide receiver
03:55and getting his eyes back look his eyes are what coming back to the football that now allows him to
04:02play the football to be aggressive at the point of contact and in few in the future you can get
04:07an
04:08interception like this just by getting your eyes back and look so now with him getting his eyes back
04:14he locates the football and he's able to get his hands in there to make a pass break up hood
04:21error
04:21there's a celebration so again plus two split watch boom that right arm that's where they have to win
04:28the corner what's that left arm going to do he's not going inside so they want to win with this
04:33outside arm this right arm and now look with that again look what that does to receiver now look at
04:40the stem you go from plus two to now you're already down by the nfl numbers here you're we call
04:46it std
04:47split the difference you're you're in the middle of the numbers and the in the sideline he stays in phase
04:55stays over the top now once he feels this receiver starts slowing down and looking back for the
05:01football instead of grabbing and being too handsy to where you could get some sort of penalty he looks
05:07back at the football let's go i don't know maybe a maybe a ref that had a bad day may
05:13call something
05:14there but look boom gets his hand in there makes the play all right now this is a slant same
05:22thing
05:22look at this look at the slant look at the stem of the receiver what this is telling you is
05:27how
05:27disruptive he is at the line of scrimmage let's let's watch and then we'll get into it it's basically
05:33on the island all by himself gets hands in let's go and then makes a play on the football if
05:40he stays
05:40hands-on that entire time look now he wins with what his inside arm gets some sort of contact on
05:47that
05:47inside arm now we are receivers as receivers when we get this contact we're taught to now go vertical
05:54one to two steps and then slant then go on the slant or we run it like under all depends
06:00on what
06:01the offense you know in the offense what it calls for the route adjustment to be but he doesn't allow
06:07this receiver to get those two vertical steps to turn his hips and then this receiver is able to get
06:13that separation by snapping by snapping the route putting his left foot into the ground and getting
06:19separation no colton's able to keep hands on stay in phase here goes that snap but it's doing nothing
06:26because he's already running the route for him has hands on balls in the air but now he lets go
06:33because that's how you get the call but then when the ball's there gets right back in there and with
06:39these two arms is able to make a play and dislodge the football on the way down
06:47this guy's calling for a flag nah don't throw the flag just don't throw you the ball sorry
06:55all right let's watch another one this one's a little deeper route down the field um
07:01again gets his head back once you guys watching how he's getting his head back how he stays in phase
07:06and stays in play with these receivers do you call that you guys i'll let you kind of make the
07:12call
07:12you could be the ref on this one uh when we go to the tight um the the tight view
07:18where it zooms in
07:19but again look at the look at the route disruption at the line of scrimmage now one thing i will
07:25say
07:26and what he will probably work on or denar wilson being having a secondary uh mindset or as a defensive
07:34coordinator i think that's something this they're going to work with him with where it comes to when
07:38you get the your hands on on contact you don't want to be flat-footed here really you don't want
07:44to be have your hips locked but that's a whole another story he's going to get better as he uh
07:49i
07:49mean he's got to step in day one and from there you only you only get better as you learn
07:54but third
07:5511 here look at how again he widens that with the initial arm bar in contact he widens the receivers
08:02sorry that espn has this in the way y'all but you can see now where it started as again
08:07a plus two
08:08split look at where this look at where the stem is for this wide receiver that is making it hard
08:15for any quarterback to drop it in the bucket because you don't have that much green grass
08:20or real estate to work with this has to be a perfect throw now you can look again you can
08:26see
08:27it's a little blurry here but you see his eyes turning back for the football and that comes from
08:33playing baseball he told me he was a center fielder and what he said was if you can track a
08:40baseball
08:40you can track a football so he credits playing baseball playing center field as something that
08:47has helped him become a better corner better football player now here's where it gets a little
08:54handsy here gets a little grabby that can be called in the nfl but i think that's the fact that
09:00he turns
09:00locates the football i think that saves him they're looking for the flag palms up but i don't yeah i
09:08don't
09:08think they're gonna call that i don't think you call that see here even when he lost you can basically
09:14you can say this this this was kind of a somewhat of a clean release by this receiver you know
09:19look at
09:20that uh hands he doesn't get that much hands on doesn't get this left hand on the chest but it's
09:25enough to widen this receiver you see where he took that step to get vertical watch this
09:30that right foot look at where he was a plus two split now again he's std he split the difference
09:37so
09:38he's colton has cut off all this space for that quarterback to drop it in the bucket now it's all
09:45about
09:45cutting this receiver off and staying over the top and playing it in phase he runs four four four four
09:53four four one he's got enough speed to run with a receiver now this is where it gets handsy it
09:59gets
09:59grabsy he even gets a face he gets his hand on the face mask the receiver's doing a little bit
10:05more
10:05grabbing than what colton is but again locating the football that saves you if any time it gets a little
10:12bit handsy and grabsy if you turn locate the football then you save you can save yourself or
10:20you can help your case for not getting a flag all right let's watch another one he's in the slot
10:28here
10:28again it's the same thing his his mo is his mo hands get hands on a receiver
10:36have a wide release stay in phase but again what does he do as soon as he feels that that
10:42receiver
10:43slowing down and starting to play the football he innately turns gets his head back and and looks
10:50to to make a play on the football now this is more of a drop than anything but hey it's
10:55a harder catch
10:56when that corner is all over you and he's in phase
11:05watch it again here ball in the air receiver slowing down expecting that back shoulder fade
11:12now you can see the hand turn around you can see the head turn around start playing the football
11:16you can yeah is that a little grab there they may hey hey they may call it that and then
11:21that was kind
11:22of a knock on him that was part of the red ink that he does get a little handsy gets
11:26a little grabby
11:27but i feel as though that's something you could you could get taught out of uh in the nfl so
11:33let's see
11:33how he takes the coaching and see if that is something that you know you take from the drill to
11:38the practice
11:38field to game field but let's go you can call this a drop it's just a hard catch it is
11:44contested catch
11:45gets his hand in there it's enough this was pretty interesting here to be able to see he didn't there
11:54wasn't a lot of reps where he played off man and i want you to watch his hips i want
12:00you to watch his
12:01football iq here and his brake and acceleration i mean his acceleration coming out of brakes watch this
12:08playing off got the speed out drives makes play on the football it's pretty athletic especially when
12:14he's in that little that that that that glide that that skate that skate stage it's not a full back
12:21pedal it's kind of just gliding a little bit reading reading that quarterback reading his eyes reading
12:27the route and as soon as he sees this receiver start breaking to the out route it looks like he's
12:33reading receiver to quarterback as soon as he sees that he breaks on the football now now quarterback
12:39i think that's ty simpson's a little late with the football you this is the anticipation
12:44anticipation throw you've got to throw it before this receiver's out of his break and it's a race to
12:49the sideline this is a sideline throw colton and he's not even in the play at this point but now
12:57you see
12:57him drive on that outside shoulder gets in there to make a play on the football
13:05last but not least i want to put this on there for his tackling and his effort this is an
13:12effort
13:12play and a heck of a tackle in the open field all the way on the other side of the
13:18football football
13:19is here there he is there he is there he is there he is coom makes a play for a
13:24tackle for a loss
13:25you get respect from your teammates you're going to get respect from your dryants teammates if you're
13:31staying one discipline two running to the football balls over here anybody could give up on this on this
13:40play runs to the football gets his head across that makes a huge tackle through the celebration
13:47i mean i think this is a kid that one his coaches are going to love playing with him too
13:52his teammates
13:52are going to love playing with him the hood era has just begun i'll see the way he gets his
14:00eyes back
14:00and plays and tracks the football that's teach tape and that's rare in the nfl giants dbs have been flagged
14:07way too many times for pass interference calls down the field that just gave up some sort of free
14:14yardage now i also like how you're never going to question this kid's effort or his dog mentality so
14:22expect him to come in and compete for a starting job right away because remember they lost cordell flott
14:28in free agency but they did sign greg newsome to a one-year eight million dollar contract so there's an
14:34insurance policy set up in play so even if hood doesn't beat out newsome for the starting job
14:41corner depth gets an instant upgrade 83.3 covers grade by pff last season that was second best in the
14:50sec to mansoor delane the hood era in rutherford begins now
