00:06-old woman for seven months have been served preventative detention orders.
00:11Sabita Basdio, a domestic worker, told police she was beaten, burnt and her head was banged against the wall of
00:18a house in Penal.
00:19Her seven-month ordeal came to an end when she was rescued on April 11.
00:24The orders for the detention of the woman and her son were signed on April 20 by Homeland Security Minister
00:32Roger Alexander in accordance with paragraph 2 of the schedule to the Emergency Powers Regulations of 2026.
00:39The orders prevent persons from acting in a manner prejudicial to public safety based on the intelligence received.
00:47TV6 was provided copies of the orders that name Farida Balgobin of Diyosaran Trace, Penal and Roshad Road in Penal,
00:55as well as a minor who cannot be publicly identified because of his age.
01:00The minor is expected to be held at the Youth Training and Rehabilitation Center, while Balgobin is expected to be
01:07held at the Women's Prison in Aruka.
01:08The reasons for both detentions were similar, that they both had alleged involvement in an informal crime group operating in
01:17the Penal District.
01:18They were identified through investigative material and intelligence as members of the group which was said to be involved in
01:25kidnapping, false imprisonment, grievous sexual assault, serious indecency and attempted murder.
01:33Authorities said the detainee and others intended to continue these activities and had threatened to kill witnesses.
01:41Balgobin and the 17-year-old have been in custody since April 11.
01:45Police reported that Basdio, a mother of two, escaped on the night of the arrest after she ran to officers
01:51at the Barakpore Police Station.
01:53She appeared with visible injuries to her face and hands and told officers she had been abused by the suspects.
02:00She alleged that between September 2025 and April 2026, she was held against her will, forced to perform domestic duties
02:10and prevented from leaving.
02:13She reported being beaten, burned and threatened with death if she attempted to escape.
02:19Days later, on April 15, one of Balgobin's homes were damaged by fire.
02:24It was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.
