00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03So the main focus is to take this swap machine
00:06and make it dispense beer.
00:07Yes.
00:07Put bam, bam, bam, and then a beer comes out.
00:10Over beer, beer, beer.
00:11Beer, beer, beer sounds better to me.
00:13What did you guys quote?
00:14I like Kelly, dude.
00:15I didn't feel comfortable quoting it.
00:16So he threw you under the bus.
00:18So this is an antique boxing ring battle.
00:21This is really cool here.
00:23That's the one piece I'd like to try and keep.
00:25This piece of shit ain't going back on that bell.
00:30I'm Rick Dale.
00:32And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:35To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:41Every project has its challenge.
00:44But there's no job we can't handle.
00:48This is American Restoration.
00:53Come on, Kyle. It's hot.
00:55Get that done before winter.
00:57Excuse me.
00:58Hey, cowboy.
00:59Why don't you go see what he needs?
01:00What, am I customer service now?
01:03Meh, meh.
01:04What can I do for you?
01:05How you doing?
01:06I have something I'd like to get restored.
01:08Alrighty.
01:08I got somebody you can talk to.
01:10Great.
01:11Rick!
01:11I'm over here.
01:13Somebody here want to see you about something.
01:15Hey.
01:15I'm Rick.
01:16How are you?
01:16Hi, Rick. I'm Spiro.
01:17How can I help you?
01:18I have an item I'd like to have restored.
01:20I got a little table over here.
01:21We'll set it on top of there, okay?
01:25So this is an antique boxing ring bell.
01:28Oh, wow.
01:30Not in the best shape.
01:31Needs a lot of help.
01:33It came from the estate of a boxer by the name of Freddie Len.
01:36He fought in the 1940s and then went on to coach Joe Frazier as well as Muhammad Ali.
01:41Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier?
01:43I mean, those are two boxers back as a kid.
01:46That's all I remember seeing.
01:47I mean, they were in the 70s and they were going at it.
01:49Those were the days when the heavyweights were heavyweights.
01:51Yeah.
01:52So this has got a lot of history to it.
01:54It looks it.
01:54It looks it.
01:55This is really cool here.
01:57That was one of the parts of the bell that I really thought was neat.
02:00Yeah.
02:00Just kind of nautical.
02:01You can kind of feel the age, right?
02:03Yeah.
02:03Yeah.
02:04Somebody went at that.
02:05That's the one piece I'd like to try and keep.
02:07Keep that original?
02:08Totally original?
02:08Totally original.
02:10Alright, so what do you want to do with it?
02:12Well, my wife and I are huge boxing fans, so we're starting to kind of build a collection
02:15of memorabilia.
02:16Okay.
02:16So I see this as something that's going to, you know, hang in our house and will pass down
02:20through our family.
02:21Right.
02:21I think if you were to pull it, it's going to ring, but the bell's pretty dinged up, so
02:26it's not going to sound right.
02:27Some of the things on the bell I was looking at, you know, it's got a lot of dents in
02:30it.
02:31See, look at that one.
02:32That's actually got a weld in it.
02:34Somebody really went to work on this thing while they're trying to fix it.
02:37The material is solid brass.
02:40Wow.
02:40So we're going to pound it all out flat and then polish it out the way it was.
02:45Like it would have been a really shiny, brass finish.
02:48That'd be great, shiny.
02:48That bell is banged up so bad, it looks like it went a few rounds with Ollie and Frazier.
02:52And to fix this thing, because it's brass, is way harder than it looks.
02:57As far as the working mechanism, this is all done in cast right here.
03:01The springs, these can be de-rusted.
03:03And this actually looks like it's all brass too.
03:05I would polish all of that.
03:06So to get all the wood redone in oak and then finish out the bell to where it rings real,
03:11real well, I'm looking at $1,100.
03:14But Rick, I've got to tell you, this is a gift for my wife.
03:16So at that price, you better do a good job.
03:19All right.
03:19Well, I know how wives are.
03:20I have one myself.
03:21So trust me, it'll be beautiful.
03:23Okay?
03:23That sounds great.
03:24All right, cool.
03:25I'm really hoping that Rick can restore this bell because it's a great piece of boxing history.
03:38Hey, Tyler.
03:39Just get those pits out.
03:40Yeah, what's up?
03:41Where's your dad?
03:42Um, he left.
03:43He dug some parts.
03:44Well, we've got these two customers here right now.
03:46Do you have a few minutes to come out?
03:48Yeah, I can come with you.
03:49I'll be back, bud.
03:51So I don't have Rick, but I have Tyler.
03:53Tyler, this is Steve and Mark.
03:55Tyler.
03:56Hey, Tyler.
03:57Hey, dude.
03:57Nice to meet you guys.
03:58We work for RPM Advertising, and we're celebrating our 20th anniversary.
04:02Okay.
04:03And this was actually a game that we designed for one of our clients.
04:09We work a lot of late hours.
04:11Late nights, weekends.
04:12We miss a lot of happy hours.
04:13So what we'd like to do is to turn this machine into a slaughterator.
04:18Slaughterator.
04:19A kegerator, if you will.
04:20We want to keep the game and the glass intact.
04:24I love it.
04:25So we'd like it to go, you know, line a bam, bam, bam, and then a beer comes out.
04:29Or beer, beer, beer.
04:30Beer, beer, beer sounds better to me.
04:32You want it set up to where there's a winner every time, or they have to play so many times
04:37until they get beer, beer, beer.
04:39We want them to win every time.
04:41What a good boss.
04:46Really, you know, bottom line is that they see this thing, and they say, wow, so that
04:50they can have their happy hour while they're still working.
04:53So you're going to leave it open to us to figure out where to put the tap?
04:56Yes.
04:56Absolutely.
04:56Based on what we were talking about, how much would something like this cost?
05:00I don't really even feel comfortable, because if I was going to tell you a number, it'd
05:04just be a guess.
05:05A while back, we did a remorator for Sammy Hagar out of an old fridge.
05:08It had nitrogen for cooling and poured five glasses at once.
05:12Let's have a toast, Rick.
05:13I'm serious.
05:14This is to you.
05:15And that job was super expensive, so I can't begin to imagine how much this thing's
05:19going to cost.
05:20Well, here's the deal.
05:21You know, there's a lot of work to be done just to the slot machine to restore everything,
05:26the kegerator, the conversion kits, the CO2 tanks, whatever we're going to do to the base.
05:31We have to take out the mechanism for the money.
05:34We have to retrofit that tap.
05:36We need to put a drain in here to catch the beer.
05:39So there is a lot of work.
05:40I think I'm right at about $12,000.
05:44To help RPM celebrate our 20th anniversary, a special client is coming by to pick it up,
05:50so you guys better knock it out of the park.
05:52You'll be blown away.
05:53You're going to love it.
05:55Let's do it.
05:56Awesome.
05:56Thanks so much.
05:57Awesome.
05:58I'm excited.
05:59It's a tall order on this job, and if it turns out any less than what we're hoping for,
06:05it would be a huge disappointment for us.
06:08This thing better look nice, and it better dispense cold beer.
06:11All right.
06:11I'll take you on a tour of the shop.
06:17I love it.
06:23I can hear you coming all the way down the hall.
06:27I need you to help you tear this down.
06:30Oh.
06:33Do we need a flathead?
06:35You have a flathead.
06:38There you go.
06:46What are you doing?
06:49I don't know.
06:49What's up, Kyle?
06:50Hit it with a freaking punch.
06:52With a punch?
06:54Knock that son of a bitch out.
06:57Well, I'm glad I brought you in here to help me.
06:59You really didn't even need my help, did you?
07:01No.
07:02Kyle, can you braid?
07:03We need to make another one of these things.
07:05I think the customer wants that original.
07:07Well, the customer don't know what the hell he wants.
07:09The customer's always right, Cowboy.
07:11Wrong.
07:11All right.
07:12I'm going to give the bell to Manny.
07:13Get all the demons out of here.
07:14Thanks, Cowboy.
07:16You're welcome, Kyle.
07:19This piece of shit ain't going back on that bell.
07:23Cowboy, don't forget that rope.
07:24All right, Kyle.
07:28So everything that's beer-related has to be below this.
07:31Hey, guys.
07:31What's up?
07:32Hey.
07:33I don't know.
07:33What's up?
07:34It's our new restoration.
07:36Okay, well, what do they want?
07:37They want to turn it into, like, a beer dispenser.
07:40This?
07:40When you pull the arm, it's going to show beer, beer, beer.
07:44This is a sliderator.
07:45I think it'd be easier to rip out every single wire in there and start fresh.
07:49Oh, who's going to do that?
07:51It's not that many wires.
07:53Dude, you still have to have a lot of those wires for it to function.
07:57No, that won't happen.
07:58It's going to be a lot of work.
07:59It's, like, basically building a brand-new slot machine, so it could get expensive.
08:04So what'd you quote him, Ty?
08:05Nothing.
08:06I let Kelly do it.
08:07I didn't feel comfortable quoting it.
08:08It's too big of a project.
08:10This is, like, custom.
08:11Yeah, no kidding.
08:12So he threw you under the bus.
08:13What'd you quote?
08:14I quoted 12,000.
08:18Uh, that's cutting it pretty close.
08:21The problem with working on gaming devices, we need to find somebody that works on this
08:26electronic part because we want it to stop in the right positions.
08:29We want them to always win, so we need to find some slot tech that knows exactly how
08:35to work on these.
08:36We'll be fine.
08:37Trust me.
08:38All right.
08:38Well, I've heard that before.
08:40We need to make budget.
08:41I will make sure we stay on budget.
08:43Okay?
08:44Okay.
08:45I got this.
08:46A lot of what I do in the office, people can't see, so they always underestimate me.
08:50I'm a little worried about what it's going to cost bringing in outside help, but I think
08:54I got this.
08:55Okay.
08:56You know what to do.
08:57I know what to do.
08:58I know what to do.
08:59You know what to do?
08:59I know what to do.
09:02I don't know what to do.
09:04There's still a chance that this might crack.
09:07Oh.
09:07Really?
09:08I just come to see how we're doing.
09:10We're all tapped out.
09:12Do you know that boxing bell?
09:13A little piece of rope, do you know where that is?
09:15I don't recall.
09:23It's right in here, Wayne.
09:24All right.
09:24What have you got for me today?
09:26Well, we're storing this old boxing bell, and it's beat up pretty bad.
09:30So I got my welder, Wayne, in here to go a few rounds on.
09:33What I want to do is I want to polish this all out and not plate it because he wants
09:39it
09:39original.
09:40So any of these dents or dings that are in it, it's got to go.
09:43And that big one right there, that's my problem.
09:46You know, when somebody welds it like that, it ends up, you know, changing the sound of
09:50the bell anyways.
09:50They just fixed it and they didn't know any better.
09:52So I want to know how we can fix that.
09:55I think we can.
09:56It's just to be a little time consuming because there's still a chance that this might crack.
10:02Really?
10:03Yeah.
10:03When working with brass, there's always a chance that the metal will get overworked
10:07and cracked.
10:08If that happens, this job is over.
10:10All right.
10:11Well, hopefully everything goes well.
10:13All right.
10:13Knock on steel.
10:14Okay, bud?
10:15Okay.
10:15All right.
10:19To get the dents out, Wayne has to melt in brass filling.
10:23So on top of worrying about cracking the bell, he has to be careful that the heat from the
10:28MIG welder doesn't warp them up, which ultimately will determine the sound of the bell.
10:42Wow.
10:43That's a lot of slot machines.
10:44Yeah, it is.
10:45Yeah, it is.
10:47Hi, are you Dave?
10:48I am.
10:49You must be Kelly.
10:50I am.
10:50How are you?
10:51What are you doing?
10:51What do you got there?
10:52This is the slot machine that I was telling you about.
10:55Okay.
10:55Well, let's get it on the lift over here and see what you got.
10:58Okay.
10:59Well, we had the customers come in.
11:00They want us to turn the slot machine into a slaughterator, which actually dispenses beer.
11:04I think I quoted a really good price, but Rick doesn't think so.
11:08I'm hoping Dave can shed some light on the situation.
11:11So what exactly you want this to do?
11:12Do you want it to take money?
11:14No.
11:15It's got to be free play.
11:16Okay.
11:17Every time you pull this, you're a winner.
11:19And so you get your beer, and this lights up, it ding-dings.
11:23I mean, all the effects of a real slot machine in a casino.
11:25Well, making a machine free play is one thing, but to make it hit a jackpot every time,
11:30these machines were not designed for that.
11:31I think we need to look inside and see what you have here and see if this is something that's
11:35even feasible to do.
11:36As you can see, the machine's made us many components.
11:39Geez.
11:40Yeah, this is the hopper.
11:41This is what pays out the money.
11:42We won't be needing that anymore.
11:44No, no.
11:44And then we have what they call the microprocessor unit.
11:47Yeah, this is the brain of the machine.
11:48These are the two programs that control this game.
11:51To make this machine think it's going to hit a jackpot every time,
11:55sometimes we may have to rewrite software in order for that to happen.
11:59So that's just something we need to really think about.
12:01We're going to have to find some sort of a solenoid.
12:03It's a solenoid?
12:05A solenoid, like a coil that would open and close the valve,
12:08allowing something to pass through, like beer,
12:11and it would be activated from the handle pool.
12:13But you could hold it down until the beer is full and let it go back up.
12:16You time the opening with how long you hold the handle.
12:19Sure.
12:19That's a good idea.
12:20A solenoid in this thing sounds good, but it also sounds expensive.
12:24Here's the plan.
12:25Take out all the...
12:26Unwanted components.
12:27Anything that has to do with the money and then try to program it.
12:29Get the solenoid in.
12:31We're going to take care of the rest.
12:32And then call me with a price.
12:34Okay.
12:34I've never done this before, but I think we can do it.
12:38Sounds great.
12:39Thank you, Dave.
12:40Thank you so much.
12:41Take care.
12:42Have a good one.
12:47Cowboy.
12:48Hey, you know that boxing bell?
12:50A little piece of rope, you know, sort of...
12:52It pulled down on the bell.
12:53You know where that is?
12:54I don't recall.
12:56You and Kyle tore it down.
12:57You have no idea?
12:58No idea.
12:59Rick, a little piece of braided rope?
13:01Yeah.
13:02I saw it in the garbage over there.
13:04Did you throw it away?
13:05I guess.
13:05You want me to dig it out of the trash?
13:07That's bull****.
13:07You need to get over there right now and dig it out of the trash.
13:10I saw a cowboy throw it out.
13:12It was in the garbage.
13:13So, hey, pay back.
13:15You don't need to mention my name at all.
13:19I usually drill on you.
13:21We don't ever throw anything away on a customer's restoration.
13:25Snitch.
13:25Hey, you shouldn't throw anything away.
13:27Snitches and bitches.
13:28Chris ain't gonna last long here if he keeps snitching on me.
13:31Hey, I saw a guy on the strip like that last night.
13:34Looked kind of like you, digging for aluminum cans.
13:37I was digging your mother out of the trash.
13:39Really?
13:39You're really good at digging through garbage.
13:41Is that what you do?
13:42Ask your mama.
13:43You get your little five-cent returns on the aluminum cans.
13:45Ask your mama.
13:45Hey, there's the rope.
13:47You should know better than to throw anything out.
13:51How's this little bad boy doing?
13:53Good.
13:54It's done.
13:55Yeah, it looks cool.
13:58But what is this?
13:59Just a small wagon?
14:00Actually, what it is, is it's either a late 30s or early 40s high-speed salesman sample.
14:07This is basically what the salesman would carry as a tool to show the merchant or the guy that owned
14:12the store, this is what it looks like.
14:14How many do you want to order?
14:15And this is rare.
14:18There's only so many salesmen, so they only made a certain amount of these.
14:22Of the small ones.
14:23Yeah.
14:23This thing's super cool.
14:24It has character.
14:25Right.
14:26The swooping fenders that are on here, you know, that Art Deco stuff is very 40s.
14:31I remember when this thing came in, it was pretty wrecked.
14:34Yeah.
14:35The wheels were basically chipped and falling apart.
14:37We had to go over the wheels and redo all the woodwork.
14:40The bodywork was very tedious because it's so small, you know, it took a lot more time to deal with.
14:46Put new hardware inside there, straightened the handle out.
14:49The paint job on it looks incredible.
14:51The customer's gonna love it.
14:52Let's go ahead and get the thing wrapped up, crated, get it out of here.
15:10Hey, is this part to the slaughterator?
15:13Yeah.
15:13Yeah.
15:14All right.
15:15So, just come to see how we're doing.
15:17You know how we talked about doing the switch thing, you know, for the customer to pull the arm down?
15:23Yeah, yeah.
15:23Well, that's totally not in the budget.
15:25What do we do?
15:26Our slot guy quoted us a price, and in order to make the arm trigger the beer, this was gonna
15:31put us way over budget.
15:34So, what's plan B?
15:35What do you mean, what's plan B?
15:38I saw the scum.
15:40So, what are you thinking here?
15:42We're actually going to move the tap on the left side, because it's going to be a manual one.
15:48All right.
15:49This is actually the piece that taps into the top of the keg, and this piece right here, this is
15:55actually the line that goes from the CO2 tank into here and pushes the beer up into the hose.
16:01We're gonna have the line run right through that hole, so we don't have to drill any holes.
16:05I like that.
16:06We don't do it right, and it leaks anywhere inside this, we're gonna have a huge short.
16:12It won't work anymore.
16:13Okay.
16:14All right.
16:15So, it goes like that.
16:16We don't have much time.
16:18Okay?
16:19You get the beer.
16:20You figure out the routing.
16:22All right.
16:23Hurry.
16:23Chop, chop.
16:30So, you want to go see it?
16:32Definitely.
16:32Yeah, we're excited.
16:33Right over here.
16:34We're both very big boxing fans.
16:36This bell was a gift from my husband, and it was pretty beat up, so I'm looking forward to seeing
16:40what it looks like today.
16:41So, you ready?
16:41Yes.
16:42Yeah, we are ready.
16:43Okay, here we go.
16:44One, two, three.
16:46Oh, my God.
16:47Oh, my God.
16:48Wow.
16:56Okay, so you guys, who remembers what this thing looked like?
16:59I remember what it looked like.
17:00Yeah, it was really badly.
17:01It was really beat up.
17:02Oh, the bell was all dented, and the wood behind it was just all rotted out.
17:07Yeah.
17:08So, you ready?
17:09Yes.
17:09Yeah, we're ready.
17:10Okay, here we go.
17:11One, two, three.
17:14Oh, my God.
17:15Oh, my God.
17:15Wow.
17:18That is...
17:19Oh, wow.
17:19That is really outstanding.
17:21Oh, my God.
17:22Look at that.
17:23Are you sure this is the right one?
17:25Are you sure?
17:25This is the same back, and it does not look like it.
17:28Unreal.
17:29That is stunning.
17:30Wow.
17:31And the wood.
17:32Oh, my gosh.
17:33Yeah.
17:33When we brought it in, it was just so rotted out.
17:35It was, oh.
17:36You've put it back into really just amazing shape.
17:40This bell itself was made so precise that they've got to be just right.
17:44Otherwise, they don't sound right.
17:46So, you guys want to hear it?
17:47You want to pull it?
17:48Absolutely.
17:49Sure.
17:49Let it rip.
17:50All right.
17:52There we go.
17:53And it works.
17:54Pretty cool.
17:56This was the one thing that I asked you to hold onto, and it is there.
18:01Yeah.
18:01It's there now.
18:03So, where's it going to go?
18:05Well, with it looking this good, you get to pick where it goes.
18:08Living room.
18:10Bedroom.
18:11Ding, ding.
18:12Given what it looks like now, it's going right on the wall.
18:15Hands down, I think this is the best piece that we have in our boxing memorabilia.
18:19Thanks again.
18:19Yeah, as long as you're happy, I'm definitely happy.
18:22Let it rip.
18:31Hey, Rick.
18:32Yeah.
18:35This is TJ, the great nephew of Jack Binion.
18:38You know Binion's Casinos?
18:39Hi, Rick.
18:39Great to meet you.
18:40Nice to meet you, too.
18:41Awesome.
18:41He's here for the slot machine.
18:43Oh, okay.
18:44Our friends at RPM got hung up in Chicago with some weather.
18:47Oh.
18:48Steve and Mark's company, RPM, we used at our casinos.
18:51And in celebration of the work they did, we gave them a groovy shoe slot machine.
18:56I'm excited to see the new version.
18:57You know, I remember seeing it in their offices there.
18:59You know, working with them there.
19:01And it was getting a little long in the tube.
19:04Yeah, it's beat up.
19:05So, um, you ready to see it?
19:07I can't wait to see it.
19:08Okay, you're going to love this thing.
19:09Come on, let's do it.
19:10It's over here.
19:13Okay, so it's a little different now, so I want to show it to you.
19:16You ready?
19:16I'm excited.
19:17Let's see it.
19:17One, two, three.
19:20Oh!
19:23Check this out.
19:26Oh, man.
19:27Oh, man.
19:28This is all refinished.
19:29Look at this.
19:30Wait a second.
19:33Groovy brews?
19:34That's right.
19:35It's not groovy shoes anymore, is it?
19:37You know why it's groovy brews?
19:39No.
19:40Yes.
19:41Way.
19:42These guys are going to have so much fun with this.
19:45I want one.
19:47Brew, brew, brew.
19:48Any brew.
19:49The best beer is free beer.
19:52It's on the house.
19:54Oh, man.
19:55This is fantastic.
19:56Kelly found this basically kegerator refrigeration unit here, and what you do is you open it
20:01up, and then now they put the keg right down in here.
20:05It's got the CO2 unit on the bottom, and then there's a drain line going through there.
20:09So we took the tray and made it into a drain unit, okay?
20:13So it drains through there in case they get sloppy.
20:16Yes.
20:16On the original machine, it had buttons, it had a dollar bill validator, all that stuff
20:21on the front door.
20:22Yes.
20:22We just took and filled all that in and re-chromed everything.
20:25And on the inside, it's all been redone.
20:28We took everything out of it.
20:30It's all nice and cold at the bottom.
20:31As soon as you pull the tap, you're going to get ice cold beer out of the front.
20:34Fantastic.
20:35Does the mug start, you know, turn on?
20:37Yeah.
20:37Here.
20:37Let me show you.
20:39Ready?
20:40Boom.
20:41Oh, man.
20:42Look at this.
20:42The mug's turning.
20:43All right.
20:44Well, I'll tell you what.
20:45Yeah?
20:46Let's make sure this thing works.
20:48All right.
20:48All right.
20:49Here we go.
20:52There you go.
20:53Winner, winner!
20:55Let's celebrate.
20:56Go ahead.
20:57All right.
20:58The slaughterator.
20:59I wasn't even expecting a slaughterator.
21:01I was expecting a slot machine.
21:02And to come in and see what Rick and his crew did, oh, man, it's a blast.
21:07The functionality of it.
21:08It's clean.
21:09It's tight.
21:09I mean, they just nailed it.
21:11You guys did a great job here.
21:14So, let's go inside.
21:15I think I got some peanuts to go in here.
21:16Let's throw these down.
21:17Yeah, yeah.
