00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03Do you paint everything?
00:03If you paint it, I'll paint it.
00:05I'm going to sort of have a competition.
00:06You up for that?
00:07It's going to be a manslaughter.
00:08This is a 1978 Arctic Cat wet bike.
00:11How would you like to make a little wager?
00:13So if one of us can get up on this thing and ride it,
00:15you'll pay us $15,000.
00:17You got it.
00:19Oh, that kind of hurt.
00:21I'm Horny Mike.
00:22Nice to meet you.
00:23I'm here to make you look bad.
00:24There's no way I'm losing this,
00:25especially to a guy who's got horns on his head.
00:29I'm Rick Dale.
00:30And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:34To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:40Every project has its challenges,
00:43but there's no job we can't handle.
00:46This is American Restoration.
00:54Go!
00:55I've always fostered a spirit of competition.
00:57Yeah, come on, get me.
00:59In my life and at the shop.
01:01Everybody give it up for Kyle
01:02because he is the employee of the month.
01:03Whether it's a friendly bet.
01:05I can do both these scooters
01:06before you even think about doing them.
01:08Or a new shop challenge.
01:10Do you mind if we set up a little challenge?
01:12Here we go.
01:13I believe it makes me and my team better.
01:15Whoa!
01:17They're all missing.
01:18They're all missing doors.
01:20Yeah.
01:20What the heck is that?
01:22What is that?
01:23That's pretty cool.
01:25Hey!
01:26Good to see you, Ken.
01:27Good to see you, Rick.
01:28Ken is a regular customer,
01:29and like me, a total gearhead.
01:31And the projects he brings in are a real challenge.
01:34Where the heck did you get that?
01:36This is a 1978 Arctic Cat wet bike.
01:40I picked that up in 1982.
01:43This thing is absolutely awesome.
01:44These things were like the beginning
01:46of what we know as jet skis now, right?
01:49Yeah.
01:49Jet pump is about twice the size
01:51of what you had on the jet skis.
01:53This is pretty cool.
01:54Seeing a wet bike.
01:55I mean, I've seen a lot of jet skis,
01:57but I've never seen one of these.
01:58This was basically an outboard motor
02:00that they strapped on a ski,
02:02and it's a hydroplane.
02:04Nelson Tyler is the guy that did these,
02:06and he was like an aeronautical engineer.
02:07His first one was just the funkiest-looking thing.
02:10Yeah.
02:10It had a prop on the back.
02:12Yeah, it was different.
02:12It wasn't a jet.
02:13Right, right, right.
02:14And he ended up getting it on James Bond.
02:17Yeah, it's about who left me.
02:18Dude, you know how badass you gotta be
02:20to be riding this in a tux?
02:25Wet bikes are top-heavy
02:26and not very easy to ride, are they?
02:28Balance is very important on getting in there.
02:30Yeah.
02:30Especially if you're big.
02:31The bigger you are, the harder it is.
02:33You know, I went as James Bond for Halloween,
02:36but I wasn't 007.
02:38I was 007 because I'm bigger.
02:41Dude.
02:42I think this would be a piece of cake.
02:44Yeah, it's on the trailer.
02:47So, what do you want to do to it?
02:49I want to put it back original.
02:50I've been sitting in my garage for about 22 years now.
02:53My kids were really too little when I had it.
02:55They're older, so now I can laugh at them when they fall off of it.
03:00You want to paint it or gel coat it?
03:02I know that gel coating is a really hard process.
03:04I think I would go to that level.
03:06I would gel coat it all in white again.
03:08It'd last definitely better on top of the fiberglass.
03:11Okay.
03:11You know?
03:11Gel coating is made with plastics and fiberglass,
03:15and it gets shot on the piece of fiberglass,
03:18and it creates a really thick resin
03:20that's so much more durable than paint on the water.
03:24Problem is, is I have never done gel coating,
03:26but I want to do it on this.
03:28All right, so this thing looks like a ton of work.
03:30The grip that's on it or the throttle,
03:32it was a tris throttle, right, not a thumb throttle.
03:34Yes.
03:34Well, that's going to be tough to find the original.
03:37This rubber, I'll have to find that to get that done.
03:40The motor...
03:46Ah.
03:47Man, is that ugly.
03:49Look at the carburetor.
03:50I mean, it's got so much gunk on it,
03:52it's going to need a lot of work.
03:54Okay, to take this thing apart,
03:56go ahead and make it exactly stock, right?
03:58Right.
03:58I'm looking right around $15,000 to do the whole thing.
04:06Well, we're in Las Vegas.
04:08How would you like to make a little wager?
04:10We'll do that if one of you guys get up on it
04:13the first time out at the lake,
04:14and if not, we'll go $12,000.
04:18So if one of us can get up on this thing and ride it,
04:21you'll pay $15,000.
04:22And if not, it's $12,000, right?
04:24You got it.
04:26So a $3,000 bet.
04:27Hmm.
04:28This thing is like no other jet ski I've ever seen
04:31or ridden before.
04:32I'll handle this thing.
04:34Yeah, but it's my money you're going to lose
04:35when you face plant.
04:37I want to ride it.
04:38I'm worried about him, but I want to.
04:39I'm good for that, okay?
04:40All right.
04:41You got a deal.
04:41All right. Thanks, Rick.
04:42You bet, Ken.
04:44$15,000 was a little high, so we made a wager.
04:46I don't think they can do it,
04:47so that's money in the bank.
04:48Show you how I'm going to own you.
04:52Oh, that kind of hurt.
05:00Dad.
05:01Yeah.
05:02Nico's here about the job.
05:03Hey, Nico.
05:04How are you?
05:06We've been extremely busy at the shop,
05:08and I'm following further and further behind.
05:09I need one more painter to be consistent and quick
05:13and get the job done just exactly how I want it.
05:16Can you paint everything?
05:17If you paint it, I'll paint it.
05:18I'm Nico. I'm a custom painter.
05:20I've been painting since I was four years old.
05:22I paint anything from wood to metal to tin.
05:24It doesn't matter what it is.
05:25I want to show you around,
05:26show you some of the other stuff that we do.
05:28This is a piece that's basically just got torn down.
05:31It's an old basketball game out of the early 40s.
05:33It's going to be traced first
05:34because we haven't got to match this art.
05:36Could you trace it?
05:37Yeah, not a problem.
05:38I would first take photos of it.
05:39Yeah.
05:40Run the vector artwork, do a black and white print,
05:42set it up to the side,
05:43and then size it and see if it matches up.
05:45So you don't need to sit over top of this and trace it.
05:47I don't have to do anything of that at all.
05:48Welcome to the digital world.
05:49Wow.
05:50This guy talks like he knows everything,
05:52but I've heard it before.
05:54Well, you definitely talk the talk,
05:56but I got another guy in town that I trust,
05:58and I want to bring him in
05:59to make sure I'm making the right call.
06:01I'm going to sort of have a competition.
06:02You up for that?
06:03Please do.
06:04Do what you want to do to be a manslaughter.
06:06I assure you.
06:07There's nobody going to compete with me.
06:08There's going to be no competition on any painter.
06:10It's not going to happen.
06:11I'm really not even moved by.
06:12It doesn't bother me.
06:14Paint away?
06:14You guys can both come down,
06:16and we'll just, you know, basically paint off.
06:18You on it?
06:18Yeah, not a problem.
06:19Thanks, Nico.
06:21All right, come on, I'll show you out.
06:22All right, thanks.
06:23You're going to learn a lot of stuff.
06:25Oh, you're going to school me?
06:26Yeah.
06:27They told me you were funny.
06:28Hey, looks like I'm just going to bring it all.
06:30I'm going to whoop his ass now.
06:34One, two, three.
06:36Oh, man.
06:37I am a little bit concerned that he can't make it work.
06:40I know, it's pretty windy.
06:41I mean, is that going to matter?
06:42It would help me out if he hit the drink.
06:59We've been working really hard on stripping this wet bike
07:02and filling all the dings and debts.
07:04And because I'm so short-staffed in my paint department,
07:06I've got to figure out how to do this gel coat process
07:09that I've never done before.
07:17All right, Tyler.
07:18What's up?
07:19You ready to do this?
07:20Yeah.
07:21I've done fiberglass, but I've never shot gel coat.
07:25Basically, it's sort of like a paint, but it's more of a plastic.
07:27And it's pretty hard to get it to the right thickness.
07:30I just want to thin it just enough to where it comes out of our gun.
07:33To thin the product, use high bond resin thinner.
07:36We don't have that.
07:37Okay.
07:40All right.
07:41Then we can use the gel.
07:42Use styrene, which...
07:43We don't have that either.
07:47I'm going to add a little acetone, okay?
07:49It'll thin it just a little bit.
07:50Doing this gel coating process with my dad,
07:52he doesn't know how to do it, and I don't know how to do it.
07:55The playing fields are leveled.
07:56He doesn't have an unfair advantage.
07:58He can't try to tell me what to do,
07:59because he doesn't know either.
08:02We'll see.
08:02I want black on the bottom, and I want white on top.
08:06Evidently, it doesn't come in black.
08:08Oh.
08:08So what happens is you tint it with black.
08:11Gotcha.
08:13Bring it.
08:14Oh.
08:16We're going to thin it out a little bit.
08:17This is not going to spray through the gun.
08:24It's not thinning.
08:26It's just separating.
08:28Keep stirring.
08:29It's starting to come around, right?
08:31Yeah.
08:32Whew.
08:33I have no clue how this is going to shoot.
08:35Only one way to find out, Dad.
08:37Good luck.
08:46Whoo-hoo!
08:47There's still one more step that we could really screw up.
08:50You have to put a layer over top.
08:52It's called a release.
08:58It looked like silly string.
08:59It was in my face, in my hair, on my clothes.
09:02Well, what mold release does, it cures the gel coat on the fiberglass.
09:07If you don't put that on, it won't cure.
09:09It'd be tacky.
09:10I don't know what it was, but it was everywhere.
09:16All right.
09:17Hopefully, we did everything right now.
09:19Because if it doesn't cure, it'll be either tacky or soft.
09:23So we'll come back and see how it works.
09:25Whoo!
09:26It was exciting.
09:27Ugh.
09:27I need a shower.
09:36What's up, Rick?
09:38Hey, Mike.
09:39I'm Horny Mike.
09:40I work over at Counts Customs.
09:41I do all their airbrushing and whatever else they make me do.
09:45I'm thinking about hiring this guy named Nico.
09:47Okay.
09:47And he says he's a great painter.
09:49He says he's fast.
09:50If he painted, I'll paint it.
09:52They like to run their mouth about how great they are.
09:55All painters talk smack because, you know, they want everybody to think they're the best.
10:01I talk a lot of smack.
10:02I want to give him a little test run, okay?
10:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:05So I want to sort of have this little competition between you and him.
10:07Okay.
10:08And I need you to put some pressure on him.
10:10And I want you to act like you want the job.
10:12Yeah, yeah.
10:12You know what I'm saying?
10:13Oh, yeah.
10:14And I also want him to be a great painter.
10:16Otherwise, I'm not going to hire him.
10:17He's not going to be as good as me.
10:18Okay.
10:19So you want to go out and just give him hell?
10:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:22Okay.
10:22This is actually going to be a blast for me.
10:24Thank you very much, Mike.
10:25No problem, brother.
10:26This is a great day for me.
10:28At the shop, normally they stop me from screwing with people.
10:31Rick called me to come here and screw with someone.
10:34What's going now?
10:36Hey, what's up?
10:37How you doing?
10:38Good, how you doing?
10:39I'm Nico.
10:40I'm Horny Mike.
10:41Nice to meet you.
10:41I'm here to hopefully make you look bad.
10:43Oh, I hope that doesn't happen.
10:45You got so much stuff.
10:46I'm starting to feel unprofessional.
10:48I'm trying to get you a little nervous.
10:49This guy walks in late, has horns on his head,
10:53has nothing in his hands.
10:54There's absolutely no way this guy's going to do anything with me.
10:57Nothing.
10:58Morning, ladies.
10:59Ladies?
11:00Morning.
11:00You're the one with two balls in your hand.
11:02Who are you, Mike?
11:03Nico?
11:04These are the two things you're going to paint.
11:05They're round, a little harder painting.
11:08I've already taken the skin off of one of them.
11:10It's plastic material.
11:12The paint has to stick.
11:14Okay?
11:14I want you guys to paint both of these into the world of Rick's Restoration.
11:19What Rick's Restoration is all about.
11:22Okay?
11:23What is the world of Rick's Restoration mean?
11:26Old junk?
11:28What am I going to paint on this?
11:29And I don't have any good ideas to paint on this ball.
11:32This sucks.
11:33I got nothing.
11:34I really got nothing for that.
11:36Well, that's a big problem, Mike.
11:38You're going to need to go find something.
11:39Walk yourselves around, figure it out, and let's get going.
11:42Okay?
11:42All right.
11:43Get it done.
11:44This should be awesome.
11:45Yeah, real great.
11:46Not at all.
11:47Yeah.
11:47But you get the blue ball.
11:50You seem like a blue balls kind of guy.
11:52You know what?
11:54I like that.
11:56That's good.
11:57Okay?
12:05Recently, Tyler and I did our first gel coating job.
12:08So now we're going to pull it out and see if it worked.
12:10My worry is right now that when you hose it, it'll blow off the paint,
12:13because maybe it didn't cure right.
12:15How come it's so rough up there?
12:17I don't know.
12:17Start hosing.
12:19The worst thing that could happen is we go to wash this wet bike off,
12:23and all the gel coat comes off.
12:25That is not what we want.
12:26Well, is this getting smooth?
12:28Ah, it is.
12:29Yeah.
12:29Look, it's smoothed right out.
12:30Yeah.
12:31So far, we're good.
12:33The paint's not coming off.
12:34We're golden.
12:34All that rough stuff that was on there, like you said,
12:37this faded part.
12:38Yeah, the haze.
12:38It's all gone.
12:39The haze is gone.
12:40This is going to cook through the water.
12:42Looks so good.
12:43One more thing we can say we know how to do now.
12:45Yeah.
12:45I love it.
12:46I'm stoked that this actually worked,
12:49and then now we can actually do this process
12:51and save a ton of money.
12:53Good job, buddy.
12:55Win.
13:04Oh, it's going to be a fun day.
13:05Well, it's not going to be a fun day.
13:06It's going to be like a day at school.
13:08You're going to learn a lot of stuff.
13:10Oh, you're going to school me?
13:11Yeah.
13:12They told me you were funny.
13:15I figured I would start with the base red.
13:16One half of my globe will have the signage,
13:19things that you see around here.
13:20The other half will be the grains, the wood tones, and tools.
13:23I've got a couple of secrets I'm going to use,
13:24so we'll see how it goes from here.
13:26Oh.
13:27Oh, don't worry about that.
13:28That's going to wash right out.
13:31Can't lie.
13:32I feel kind of stupid.
13:33Hey, look.
13:33You know what?
13:34Look, if you don't make it with the paint job,
13:35you can always become a janitor.
13:37You bastard.
13:38There is no way I'm letting this punk run his mouth.
13:41So now, hey, it looks like I'm just going to bring it off.
13:44I'm going to whoop his ass now.
13:48Can't get enough of that, so I'm going to go too fast
13:50and have whatever of your brothers laugh.
13:52Getting all the finer things in excess, no regrets.
13:55You only judge me because you wish that you could open that.
13:59Kid song.
14:00You see it, you want to grab it.
14:01Kid song.
14:03Me and the stupid to have it.
14:05Kid song.
14:06Now, I'm bringing back the magic on a stack,
14:08rise and bag it.
14:09You look like a savage.
14:17You know, I'm excited to see what you guys did.
14:20I want to go first.
14:21Let's see what he's got.
14:22He's all excited.
14:22All right.
14:23I can't wait to see this.
14:24Just check it out.
14:25Oh, wow.
14:27You want me to restore this voice?
14:36So what I'm going to be looking for is quality, creativity.
14:40At the same time, I said it needs to be the world of Ricks.
14:43I brought in Horny Mike to test Nico's paint skills in a competition.
14:47Now I get to see how good this guy really is.
14:50I want to go first.
14:51He's all excited.
14:52I can't wait to see this.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Whoa, whatever.
14:55Just check it out.
14:56Oh, wow.
15:01I started to paint my ball the way I did, really because Rick's world, it's old stuff,
15:06the machines.
15:06So I decided to put the wood slats all the way around it, make it look old and tarnished.
15:11The wood grain is phenomenal.
15:13That looks great.
15:15That looks nice.
15:16And I love this copper, how you got that going on in there.
15:19And give it that tarnished look, that old, you know, rustic, you know, how things come
15:23in when you first get it.
15:24You want me to restore this voice?
15:28Let's try Nico's now.
15:30Yeah, I agree.
15:31I'm ready to see Nico's too.
15:32Yes, please, by all means.
15:33All right.
15:34I'm very confident in what I did and I'm going to win the competition only because I spent
15:37more time artistically air-brushing and handling things instead of spitting little paint on
15:41top of things to make techniques.
15:52My designer utilizing, you know, all the pieces and parts inside of Rick's place.
15:56I saw the wood, I saw the metal, so I gave it that ripped, rusted look.
16:00I added a couple of machines, old and new, something that was restored and revised, but
16:04I kept it in the genre of what Rick wanted.
16:08All right, so you ready for this, guys?
16:09The winner of these two balls right now, the one that I like the most that says everything
16:14about Rick's restorations, is this one right here.
16:19Nico, you're the man, you got a job, okay?
16:21Great job to both of you, though.
16:23And, Mike, thanks for doing this, really.
16:25Thanks, Rick.
16:26Both guys did a great job, and I'm really happy to have a painter who can keep up with
16:31the likes of Horny Mike.
16:32I didn't have any confidence in you.
16:34I brought my B game, I probably should have brought my A game, but Nico bested me.
16:40It's all good.
16:41It's all right.
16:42It's all right.
16:42I'm good.
16:43Hey, Mike!
16:44The hiring janitors!
16:48The wet bike has been gel coated top and bottom, and the engine has been completely
16:53reassembled.
16:54Fonzie's doing final tweaks, and now the only questions left are if the client will like
16:59it, and if we can win our $3,000 bet.
17:02Gain some speed.
17:03Don't be scared.
17:04I'm going fast.
17:05That's not fast.
17:06That's not?
17:07What are you doing?
17:09Getting ready for the wet bike, dude.
17:11Right?
17:11I got to save you three grand.
17:13That's what I do.
17:14I'm the hero.
17:16You're not riding the wet bike.
17:18Ron thinks a skateboard's going to help him balance.
17:20That's like me thinking a bicycle's going to prep me for the Indy 500.
17:24Not even James Bond can do the stuff I can do on a skateboard.
17:27You're just wasting my time.
17:29Oh!
17:30Oh!
17:31You went down!
17:33Ron, you're a jackass.
17:35At least I know how to fall.
17:36That's the main reason I won't trust Ron with a $3,000 bet.
17:40He's just an idiot.
17:44Now we've got to get the wet bike out to the lake so we can show it off to the
17:47customer.
17:52What do you think about this wet bike?
17:54Is it going to fire up and go?
17:55God, I hope so.
17:56It's going to be embarrassing if it doesn't.
17:58That water looks cold.
18:00Dude, actually, I can't wait for him to see this thing because it's pretty badass.
18:03Yeah.
18:04There he comes.
18:05Moment of truth right here, baby.
18:07Moment of truth.
18:11Hey!
18:12How's it going?
18:13How you been?
18:13Doing good.
18:14Good to see you, man.
18:14Ready to see this?
18:15I'm ready.
18:16Like a kid at Christmas, I've got to see this thing.
18:18Come on over here.
18:19It's over here.
18:20You remember how rough this thing was, right?
18:22Oh, yeah.
18:22It was 20 years of sitting in the garage.
18:24Well, quite honestly, it looked like you used to use it for a dirt bike and ride it through
18:27the desert.
18:28That's what it looked like.
18:29Every bit of fiberglass was cracked.
18:31The motor looked like, you know, it was a home for wayward squirrels.
18:36All right.
18:37So I'm going to have Ron.
18:37Go ahead.
18:38All right.
18:39I am a little bit concerned that since this thing was made over 45 years ago, that parts
18:44can't be found for it and he can't make it work.
18:47One, two, three.
18:52Oh, man.
18:57This is beautiful.
18:58I mean, I'm speechless.
19:00If you didn't know better, you'd think it just came off the children's floor.
19:03This is what it looks like.
19:05That's exactly what it would have looked like back in 1978.
19:09This is all gel coated, so it's nice and slippery on the bottom.
19:13We reupholstered the whole seat.
19:14They don't make this seat, so we did that and put these little inlays in it.
19:18The pump itself, we took it all the way apart, powder coated everything.
19:22We stripped all the paint off of it and then refiberglassed everything.
19:26We had to sand everything nice and smooth.
19:28We've got new decals in there and redid the whole plate and everything on the bottom end.
19:32All the switches have been redone, so this all functions again.
19:36This exceeded my expectations.
19:38Now we've got to see it run.
19:40Yeah.
19:41Remember our little wager we had here.
19:43I do remember the wager.
19:44I'm just hoping you like the thing enough to where I don't have to get in the lake.
19:48$15,000 is the price, but if you can't get up on it, we're looking at $12,000.
19:52All right, so I'm going to go get the truck and hook up and be ready for the show of
19:56your life.
19:57Chicken, not stirred.
19:58Hey, just don't break it before I get to ride it.
20:02James Bond rode one of these bikes in a movie, and I want to show Ken that I can ride
20:07it first time up in a James Bond outfit.
20:10I know, that's pretty windy.
20:11I mean, is that going to matter?
20:12It's not going to help.
20:13It would help me out if he hit the drink.
20:18I've never been on one of these bikes.
20:20I don't know if I'm immediately get up in the air and fall over.
20:23I mean, I don't want to lose no matter what.
20:25And I also don't want to drown.
20:26I wonder what's taking him so long.
20:28The anticipation's killing me on this.
20:34What are the odds that he can't even get up on it?
20:36I pretend to want that he can't ride it.
20:48Oh, dude.
20:49There he is.
20:49He got up.
20:50That's him.
20:52It was a little sketchy for the first, like, maybe 20, 30 feet, and then it was off to the
20:57races.
21:00That is awesome, dude.
21:06He's coming straight at us.
21:08First time!
21:10Yeah!
21:11What'd he say?
21:12That first time.
21:13Oh.
21:14$3,000, pal.
21:16Oh, man.
21:16That was great.
21:17It was worth it.
21:17I can't believe he got up the first time, but he did it.
21:20He's got to rub it in, right?
21:22All right.
21:23Let's go meet him over the doc.
21:24All right.
21:24You got it.
21:24That is, if he ever comes back.
21:26Alright.
21:26We'll do that!
