00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02What's this?
00:03It's a punch-out game.
00:04You're interested in selling it?
00:05Oh, man.
00:06I haven't even had the thing open yet.
00:07So I don't know what's in this.
00:09Oh, my God.
00:10See that?
00:11Look at all this.
00:13Tyler, it looks like you're as good on a tricycle
00:15as you are on a motorcycle.
00:17I really don't want to have to do this over again.
00:19I'm getting a little nervous.
00:20You gonna be able to get this done?
00:24I'm Rick Dale.
00:26And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:30To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:36Every project has its challenge.
00:38But there's no job we can't handle.
00:43This is American Restoration.
00:47Hey, Dad.
00:48Yeah?
00:48Doug is here.
00:49He wants to pick something out
00:50and get it restored for the Boys and Girls Club.
00:53How's it going, Dad?
00:53All right, I'm going back to work, Dad.
00:55Okay.
00:55All right?
00:56I got a bunch of stuff in the boneyard,
00:58and we'll go take a look over there.
00:59Okay, let's go.
00:59Yeah, come on.
01:00Something for the kids, huh?
01:01Yeah.
01:02How old are they?
01:03Usually 8 to 14 years old, something like that.
01:06What's this?
01:06It's a punch-out game.
01:08It was a gift from a friend of mine.
01:10You interested in selling it?
01:11Oh, man.
01:13I mean, that's the first thing you saw.
01:14I mean, there's a whole bunch of, like, kid rides.
01:16This would be ideal.
01:18Give them something to do, keep them off the streets,
01:20keep them out of trouble.
01:20You know, this does seem kind of perfect.
01:22Rick Harrison gave me this coin-op punch-out game for Christmas.
01:26Whoa!
01:27No way!
01:28I had really hoped to restore this thing for myself,
01:31but restoring it for the Boys and Girls Club will really be cool.
01:34And Rick will be happy to know that it found a good home.
01:37When was this built, roughly?
01:39Probably late 70s.
01:40It's a Zamperla, and it's made in Italy.
01:42The way that it would work is, basically, you put the quarter in,
01:45you punched it, and you see how strong you were?
01:47It lights up.
01:48It rings bells coming out of the top of here.
01:50The biggest problem with this whole thing is,
01:52I haven't even had the thing open yet.
01:54So I don't know what's in there.
01:57And if we get something going on here,
01:59how would you see that restored?
02:01I don't know if you like the silver and gold,
02:03or are you thinking something else?
02:04You know, when it was going my place,
02:05I was going to make it look old.
02:06Wood grain all over this flaky fiberglass.
02:10Inside here, I would redo the face.
02:12I would do it more old.
02:13On the outside rail here,
02:15I would make this look like a piece of wood.
02:17If you like the wood grain and making it look old,
02:19I'm good with that.
02:22Based on everything we talked about here, Rick,
02:24what are we looking at on price?
02:25Because it is for the Boys and Girls Club,
02:27I want to give a little too.
02:28What I can do is I can give it to you at cost,
02:30and I see it coming in around 12 grand.
02:3312 sounds fair, sir.
02:35All right.
02:35Awesome, awesome.
02:36That's cool that you're giving, you know, back to them.
02:39I think that's awesome.
02:40I thank you for donating too, so.
02:41You bet.
02:48That artwork looks good.
02:49Is that something you drew?
02:50No.
02:51I can't draw that good.
02:53No?
02:54What's up?
02:54Trying to tear this thing down.
02:56I do not like the colors and all that stuff going on in there,
02:59so what we're going to do is make it look vintage.
03:02It's got old graphics.
03:03Yeah.
03:04It's really old-timey floor and stuff like that.
03:06It's hard to hit these.
03:08You got to hit it just right.
03:09What's so hard about hitting them?
03:10It's not like if you're hitting somebody in the face
03:12where you want to roll your hand, you know?
03:15Can you give me a boxing lesson?
03:19I guarantee I can hit this thing harder than you.
03:21I hear a bet.
03:23There's no way you're going to hit it.
03:25I'm like twice your size.
03:27But that's not what this is about.
03:29You're old.
03:29I'm young.
03:30That's all that matters, right?
03:31You know what I'm saying?
03:32No.
03:33Tell you what.
03:34We'll see who hits it harder.
03:36And the loser gets to wear a dress.
03:39All day long.
03:40All day long.
03:41A tutu.
03:41I can already see him in it.
03:43When I beat you, you really wear a tutu?
03:46I'll take that bet.
03:47All right.
03:48I'm a witness.
03:49My dad in a tutu, it's too good.
03:51What the hell are you talking about?
03:53You're a wiener.
03:53You ain't going to beat him.
03:55.
03:56All right.
03:57Let's make this work so I can embarrass you.
03:59So we need to get to the back and see if we can open.
04:02It's locked.
04:02Cowboy.
04:03What?
04:04Give me a drill.
04:05Let me.
04:05No, no, no, no.
04:07I'm going to get that sandwich open without a drill.
04:09Oh, my God.
04:10Watch and learn.
04:15No way.
04:16Where'd you learn how to do that?
04:18Don't you worry about it.
04:20Skills we learned.
04:20This makes me worried about my car.
04:22Oh, my God.
04:24See that?
04:24Oh, my God.
04:25Look at all these transformers over here.
04:27There's a lot going on in here.
04:29What do you think about plugging this in?
04:31You sure that's a good idea?
04:32Be ready to unplug it in case it starts smoking.
04:35No guts, no glory.
04:38Do you hear anything?
04:39I don't hear .
04:40I don't hear anything.
04:41Put your tongue right there.
04:43See this switch hit leg here?
04:46Touch those together.
04:52Oh.
04:52Uh-oh.
04:53Look.
04:53I like them.
04:55The punching bag kind of stuck.
04:57Here.
04:57Touch them together.
04:59Then hold them.
05:00Touch them and hold them.
05:03Nothing.
05:04Nothing.
05:05What happens when I do this?
05:08It's trying to give it points.
05:10Watch.
05:11Here's you, Ty.
05:13Here's me.
05:14We'll see about that when you're wearing a tutu.
05:17OK.
05:17So it doesn't work.
05:18So we got to bring in our electronics guru, Tim.
05:21Before we tear all the electronics out.
05:24All right.
05:24Then, Tyler, you need to practice up.
05:27So I need to find your size in a tutu.
05:29That's what I need to find.
05:33I see a few potential problems.
05:36What does this do?
05:37There's just some wires hanging there.
05:38I'm wanting to just do it all in wood grain, the whole thing.
05:42If I don't hit it spot on, it's going to be really obvious that the rest of it is fake.
05:54We're going to take a lot of pictures.
05:56It's got so many different mechanisms.
05:58Tyler, who's that?
05:59Oh, I don't know.
06:00Hold on.
06:00Give me one sec.
06:02How are you doing?
06:03Good.
06:03How are you?
06:04My name's Ed.
06:05Tyler.
06:05Nice to meet you.
06:06I got an item here that I'd like to see if you could restore it.
06:08My dad's not here right now, but if you want, I can take a look at it for you.
06:11Sure.
06:13Wow.
06:15It's a marker rim circle saw.
06:16It was my father's.
06:17He used it in the late 50s and the early 60s.
06:20So I'd like to have this restored in memory of my father.
06:22I totally understand that.
06:24That's awesome.
06:25So the motor turns this piece.
06:26Correct.
06:27And then when you push it down, it touches the blade and spins the blade.
06:30Right.
06:30You don't want your fingers there.
06:32No.
06:32No.
06:32Or your feet.
06:33Or anything.
06:34It operates like a chop saw.
06:36So you'd put this big hook like into the log when you were sawing it in half.
06:40Right.
06:40So that way you could bring it down.
06:42I understand.
06:43Does it work?
06:44No.
06:45It hasn't run in 20 years that I know of.
06:47The rip cord is pulled all the way and it doesn't want to spring back.
06:50And also this fiber disc doesn't want to turn.
06:54Like the piston is stuck to the inside of that jug.
06:57It could be.
06:58That worries me because if we can't get it free, then the only way we're going to be able
07:02to find parts for this motor is to find a whole new chainsaw.
07:04What do you think something like that would cost to get it looking pretty and functional?
07:08We can clean up all this metal, make all this nice and new, make it smooth for you.
07:12We'll paint the blade black.
07:13We'll paint all this black because I think that's what color this would have been.
07:16We'll blast it.
07:17Get all the dents out of your gas tank.
07:19Smooth all that out.
07:20We'll shoot the gas tank and the engine cover and the engine bracket, all that same yellow.
07:24I mean, to get it all restored, get it looking pretty and working, probably $4,500.
07:33That's a little bit out of my price range.
07:36But I mean, I don't know where you're comfortable.
07:38I'm looking at $1,000.
07:39Wow.
07:40No.
07:40I would love to take on a project like this, but it needs a lot more work than his budget
07:45allows for.
07:46I can't do that, no.
07:47I'm sorry, Ed.
07:48Well, thank you very much.
07:49Thank you for bringing it in, though.
07:49Definitely.
07:50If I can't restore it myself, then at least I'll have it to remember my father by.
07:56And the memories will still be there, and it's important to save those memories.
08:07Hey, Rick.
08:08Oh, my God.
08:08I'm glad you're here.
08:09Yeah, I got the call.
08:11I'm trying to get this 1970s punch-out came to work, and it's a mess.
08:15So I called in my electrical guru, Tim, to check it out.
08:19Have you ever seen anything like this thing?
08:21I've seen one of these long ago back in the day.
08:24Never worked on one.
08:25Problems I'm having are it's not letting the bag go down, and I can't seem to figure out
08:29what everything inside here does.
08:30And I'm sort of confused.
08:32I see a few potential problems, like what does this do?
08:36Yeah.
08:36There's just some wires hanging there.
08:37Yeah, it's sitting there.
08:38If you look, all these wires here are red.
08:40Right.
08:40The problem with having everything one color is that if you don't mark it exactly, you
08:44haven't left a trail of breadcrumbs, as we call it.
08:46Right.
08:47That sounds like a ton of work.
08:48It seems like there's a lot of missing parts.
08:51You've got a boneyard.
08:52I've got a boneyard.
08:53I have scrap pinball machine parts.
08:55Well, I hope you have these.
08:56Me too.
08:57This is the million dollar question.
08:59My job would be easier if you had a schematic.
09:02The thing is, we found this in there, in the coin box.
09:05It does have schematics, but it's in Italian.
09:08You read Italian?
09:09I don't have to.
09:10Ohm's law is Ohm's law.
09:11That makes my job entirely easier.
09:13Like usual, I need to get this thing finished as soon as I can.
09:16I'll clear my workbench.
09:17We're ready to do this.
09:18All right.
09:18Thanks, Tim.
09:19Thanks.
09:29Another big one.
09:30Yeah.
09:30This is actually the punch-out game.
09:32You remember the mutoscope that we had?
09:34Oh, yeah.
09:34The 1901.
09:35It was all wood.
09:36This is more in 70s version of it.
09:38It was all in fiberglass, so we got it all prepped out and ready.
09:41So basically, I'm wanting to just do it all in wood grain, the whole thing.
09:46Okay.
09:46You know, like make it look old.
09:48Really old.
09:49So Rick says make it old and woody.
09:51Like, it's going to happen just like that.
09:53He doesn't realize how difficult this is.
09:54I mean, painting fiberglass to look like wood, especially on something this big, is going
09:58to be really difficult.
09:59So the trim is basically real wood.
10:01Okay.
10:02We'll go ahead and trim this in wood instead of stainless.
10:05Trim this in wood, and then we're going to trim that in wood.
10:08In real wood?
10:09Yeah, in real wood.
10:10Probably the single biggest thing is going to be making my fake wood match the grain of
10:15that real wood.
10:15And when you've got a real piece of wood on there that you have to match, that's a whole
10:19different story.
10:19This will give it a little depth, and you know, it'll pop a little bit more.
10:23I mean, the color's got to be right, the amount of graining's got to be right.
10:26If I don't hit it spot on, it's going to be really obvious that the rest of it is fake.
10:31No, it's going to be a pain.
10:32It's got to be perfect, and we only got a few days.
10:35If you can do it, you in for it?
10:38If I can get the color right, I'll make it look good.
10:41All right, well, good luck.
10:41I know it's going to be a task.
10:42If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.
10:45I wanted you to show me how to punch hard.
10:46We don't need to go to the gym.
10:47Well, what better place than a training facility for boxers?
10:51You made a mistake.
10:53We've got to fix it.
10:53I really don't want to have to do this over again, but I don't see any other way.
10:57I just...
10:58Are you me?
11:07I bet my dad that I could beat him at the punching game during the reveal.
11:11I guarantee I can hit this thing harder than you.
11:13I hear a bet.
11:14I tell you what.
11:15Whoever hits the weakest has to wear a tutu all day.
11:18So I asked Ron to help me out with my punching skills, so maybe I won't have to wear a
11:22tutu.
11:23You've got to have positive energy about this.
11:25You will beat your dad, and he will wear a tutu.
11:29Damn.
11:29Yeah.
11:30That's pretty awesome, right?
11:31Definitely a gym.
11:32Ready to become a man?
11:34All right.
11:37Dude, what?
11:37You don't have any shorts.
11:38This is all I got.
11:39Roll them up.
11:40Do something.
11:41Do something.
11:42This is ridiculous.
11:43You want me to cut them off?
11:44You probably have never been in a gym.
11:45Ever.
11:47Try a full one.
11:48Come on, dude.
11:49Get at least one.
11:52That's your goal.
11:53That's it.
11:53You didn't meet my goal by any standards.
11:57Oh, that wasn't a full one.
11:58One more.
11:59You're cheating yourself.
11:59Just yourself.
12:00All right.
12:01That's terrible.
12:02Let's try punching.
12:04Okay.
12:05So get in.
12:05You've got to figure out the timing of it.
12:07Okay.
12:08You can go one hand.
12:09You want to get on the other side.
12:10A little bit at the left hand.
12:12And then you want to get both of them.
12:15Okay.
12:16That was quite impressive.
12:17Thank you very little.
12:18I'm actually impressed.
12:19All right.
12:19So now, let's see what you got.
12:20Of course.
12:25All right.
12:25Punch out's right here.
12:26Remember your training.
12:27Get as hard as you can.
12:29Get up in there in the, like, Hulk range.
12:31Hulk it.
12:32Hit it.
12:32Hard.
12:34Whoa!
12:35Holy...
12:35I'm totally kidding.
12:37I'm not too sure that your balls have dropped yet.
12:39We got a lot of work, kid.
12:47Man.
12:47That came out nice.
12:49I know, right?
12:50It's badass.
12:50Wow.
12:51What a difference.
12:52You remember how it looked?
12:53When this came in, it was almost all replica parts.
12:56So now it's totally original.
12:58This is original.
12:58The tank's all original now.
13:00The seat's now all original.
13:02It's got the proper ribbing in it.
13:03And then it's got this Indian across the back.
13:05Had the wrong seat on it.
13:07Had the wrong pipe on it.
13:08The fender was wrong.
13:09It had a white fender on it.
13:11Now it's got all that real nice paint job on it.
13:13All the chrome got done.
13:14We put a number plate on it.
13:16This is like the chin guard or the shin guard, whichever.
13:20When you went flying over the handlebars,
13:21they started coming out with these in the 70s.
13:23Look at the tank.
13:24See, it's got the little Indian engraved on there.
13:26Yeah.
13:27Even the shocks.
13:28I mean, everything on it got all pleated.
13:30I know.
13:30Looks good.
13:30Yeah.
13:31Looks really good.
13:32It's all under the clear, too.
13:33This Indian's badass.
13:34And seeing it now really makes me proud of my guys
13:37and the work they do.
13:38But that's not the best one.
13:39Yeah.
13:39What is?
13:41Two words.
13:42Quality.
13:43Control.
13:45Last time you rode a bike, you crashed really bad.
13:48Exactly.
13:49So you're going to get to ride that right there, OK?
13:51That?
13:51Yeah.
13:52Right there.
13:54It's on.
13:55Are you ready?
13:57You looking good, Tyler.
13:59I'm feeling good.
14:00At least you can't crash.
14:05Tyler, it looks like you're as good on a tricycle
14:07as you are on a motorcycle.
14:08It's not my forte, but...
14:11It's obvious.
14:11It's not your forte.
14:12I saw you go down.
14:15All right.
14:15Let's go ahead and get it crated up.
14:24This punch-out game has actual wood trim,
14:26which makes matching its grain with paint that much harder.
14:29Painting wood grain is a difficult technique,
14:31especially getting the right grain and texture,
14:33so I have to make sure that all my colors are perfect.
14:37What's up, Ted?
14:39Well...
14:39How you doing?
14:41Is that, like, the finished color?
14:43Yeah, I'm, uh...
14:45I'm not real happy with how this is coming out.
14:47It looked good out in the sun,
14:48but now that I have this other color on here,
14:50I just...
14:51It's not rich enough.
14:51It's just blah.
14:52It needs to be more gold color.
14:54Oh, the color of the base.
14:56I don't want to...
14:56I really don't want to have to do this over again, but...
14:58Are you me?
14:59No, I'm not you.
15:00I don't see any other way.
15:02I'm getting a little nervous right now.
15:03Our deadline is coming upon us real quick.
15:06I know you've got to rebase the whole entire piece,
15:08and then you've got to start all over,
15:10and then we've got to do the art in between there,
15:11and we've got the art,
15:12and then we've got to put it together,
15:13and it's...
15:15I mean, we've only got a couple days.
15:16I mean, are you going to be able to get this done?
15:18No, I will...
15:18I will do what it takes to get it done.
15:21I'll, uh...
15:22Two days, Ted.
15:23Two days.
15:24That's all you got.
15:25Thanks for trying to make me feel better.
15:27Ted does great work because he is a perfectionist,
15:30but starting over on a paint job this big
15:32is not how you make deadlines.
15:35We're going to have to cross our fingers
15:36to be able to make this one, period.
15:40Oh!
15:4165.
15:42Think you can beat it?
15:43Looking pretty good by now.
15:46Come on!
15:47All right.
15:47He's so nervous right now.
15:48Don't hurt yourself.
15:55We're at the zero hour on this punch-out game,
15:58and we're piecing it all together.
15:59I really want this to meet Doug's expectations,
16:02and I'm also really excited to show Tyler up
16:04on a little wader we made.
16:06I guarantee I can hit this thing harder than you.
16:08I hear a bet.
16:09He who hits it the lowest gets to wear a dress.
16:12It's time to show Tyler who's the man of the house.
16:15Doug's here for the punching bag machine.
16:17Oh, cool!
16:17Hey, Doug.
16:18Good to see you again.
16:19Good to see you.
16:19How are you doing?
16:20So, you ready to see this?
16:21I'm excited.
16:21I can't wait.
16:22Okay, come on.
16:23It's all back.
16:23I've got to come along, too, okay?
16:26Okay, come on, Ron.
16:26Why are you coming?
16:27Because I'm coming.
16:29All right.
16:30So, what do you remember about the punch-out game?
16:33It was old, it was dirty, and it was broken.
16:36All accurate.
16:37That's what I remember.
16:39Broken lights, ugly silver, the rest on it, wires hanging out, the punching bag didn't
16:44even work.
16:45Okay, here we go.
16:46Okay, drum roll.
16:48Yeah.
16:48One, two, three.
16:52That is not even the same machine.
16:54That is not the same machine.
16:56That is fantastic.
16:57How did you do that?
16:58Look at that.
16:59That is great.
17:00Awesome, man.
17:00Look at that thing.
17:02Here, get the full effect of it.
17:04Oh, that is nice.
17:05We ended up going to our leather guy, and he stitched all this up for us, so this has
17:10all been redone.
17:11I can't believe all the detail in here.
17:12You remember it used to have stainless steel strips through here, right?
17:15Yeah.
17:15We took that off and run this trim in real wood, but this is actually all paint.
17:20That is paint.
17:22That's paint?
17:23That's paint.
17:23That is paint.
17:24Oh, that's not wood?
17:24Wow.
17:25Yeah, got it!
17:27Yeah!
17:27That means it looks good.
17:29It's been painting with me probably 30 years, and we've been doing a little bit more wood
17:34graining, and he just killed this one.
17:37He added this little touch here.
17:39He did trim around here where it looked like it was wood.
17:41So this is still fiberglass?
17:42Yeah.
17:42Yeah.
17:42I cannot believe that.
17:43That's why I say when I came out, I thought you changed the whole machine and made it wood.
17:47Wow.
17:48If you remember the faceplate, it didn't have no pizzazz to it.
17:51Yeah, I remember.
17:51Now, when you look inside there, you notice the dial is entirely different than it was before.
17:56Really nice.
17:57When we got to the back of it, and we started to open it up, there is just gobs and
18:01gobs of wire,
18:02which is really bad.
18:03So Tim ended up getting inside there and rewiring that whole thing.
18:06That's incredible.
18:08Tyler and I got a little bet going on.
18:10What a wager.
18:11Between Tyler and I, whoever hits the weakest has to wear a tutu all day tomorrow.
18:16So, I wanted to know, you want to try it, I want you to try it, but is it okay
18:19if we do two?
18:20Okay.
18:20I'm dying to try it out.
18:21Let's do this.
18:22Have at it.
18:23Whatever it says, just say it went to 250, okay?
18:25Okay.
18:25Are you ready?
18:27Oh, yeah, that's 250.
18:29That went all the way up there.
18:30It's all technique.
18:32These?
18:33These are the fists that are going to make you wear a dress.
18:35Maybe if those hands could knit a skirt.
18:37It's not a skirt, it's a tutu, Rick.
18:39You're wearing a tutu.
18:40Kiss my ass.
18:41I ain't wearing no tutu.
18:42Cross dresser.
18:47You're up.
18:48Why do I got to go first?
18:49Because you were the one that said you could hit harder than me, I think.
18:52Hey, remember what I taught you.
18:54All right, remember everything.
18:55Punch right through it.
18:57All of your weight, all the way through it.
19:00Oh!
19:01Woo!
19:02What's that, 70?
19:0365.
19:04You think you can beat it?
19:06Looking pretty good right now.
19:07Who's wearing the tutu?
19:10Come on!
19:10All right.
19:11Oh, my God.
19:12It doesn't take this long.
19:14He's so nervous right now.
19:15Don't hurt yourself.
19:1760!
19:18Damn!
19:19I am the champion!
19:21Swear to God!
19:22Which way's the beach?
19:25Where's the tutu?
19:27Looks like it's on me.
19:29When I first seen the Punch-Out Machine, I was amazed.
19:32I could not believe it was the same machine.
19:33It's just a work of art.
19:35When I get back, I'm donating it to the Boys and Girls Club of Fontana.
19:38I can't wait to see their faces and the excitement of this machine and being able to punch it.
19:43It'll be fun.
19:43It's a good cause.
19:44I appreciate it.
19:45Tyler, what do you think?
19:46Princess Pink or what?
19:47You guys suck.
19:48Kill me now.
19:56All right, listen up.
19:58Tyler, I need you to get Cowboy to crate up the Coke chest so Ron can deliver it to California.
20:04Don't get all ruffled.
20:05I got it.
20:06And Sean, I need to assemble the wane pump because the customer's coming in this week.
20:11Do they have a nutcracker that's going along with it?
20:13All right.
20:14Bradley and Ron find the original bottle opener for the two Coke machines.
20:18We're restoring.
20:19That sounds too, too hard.
20:24This is going to be a long day.
20:25I can't stop looking.
20:27Oh, I get it.
20:27He's wearing a dress.
20:28Oh, my God.
20:32What the?
20:33My eyes.
20:35You, ah, you can't stop looking.
20:35What the ship is doing?
20:35No, you have to go.
20:35I'm not going to go.
