00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Trying to find these attachments is going to be tough.
00:05You know me, I can track down anything.
00:07I'm extremely concerned if we can't find them,
00:10I'm going to be the one in trouble.
00:11So if you want to put polo gear in there,
00:14what if it was grass inside?
00:15Oh, now that would be cool.
00:17That's a baby incubator.
00:19Look, explosion proof.
00:21What?
00:25I'm Rick Dale.
00:27And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:31To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:37Every project has its challenges.
00:39But there's no job we can't handle.
00:44This is American Restoration.
00:49Hey, how's it going?
00:50Good, how you doing?
00:51I'm Rick, how can I help you?
00:52Bill.
00:52Bill.
00:53I got this old cloth that I'm hoping you can do something with.
00:55Oh, that's cool.
00:57I mean, what kind of clock is this?
00:59It's an electric alarm clock, but the interesting thing about it is it gives electric shocks.
01:04Gives a shock?
01:06Like an alarm clock?
01:07You reach up to shut it off and it gives you a jolt, wake your ass out of bed?
01:10No, it's some kind of medical treatment.
01:12You know, back in the early 1900s, they used to give shocks for health kind of reasons.
01:16Oh, yeah.
01:18Electrotherapy was a huge fad back in the 19th century, but most of it turned out to be pseudoscience.
01:23And I've never seen an electrocuting clock before.
01:26That's awesome.
01:27That's awesome.
01:28I picked up the alarm clock online and it was just too cool to pass up.
01:32I'm just kind of into quack medicine kind of things and just thought it'd be cool.
01:36It's pretty wild.
01:37It's got all kinds of little levers and...
01:39Yeah, actually, I have an article on a 1910 magazine that showed a picture of what it looked like back
01:45then.
01:46Wow, that is so cool.
01:49So that must be the attachments right here.
01:52You'd probably hold on to this one to zap yourself.
01:54And it also says it has stuff to examine the throat and the mouth.
01:58That's pretty cool.
01:59Yeah, it looks like this is where those attachments were.
02:02Uh-huh.
02:02Do you have any of them or...?
02:03I don't have any of them.
02:05I'm not exactly sure they even exist anymore.
02:07Really?
02:08Yeah.
02:08Oh, wow.
02:09All right, well, I have a guy that just started working here that knows quite a bit about a little
02:13of everything.
02:14You mind if I bring him in and, like, let him look at this?
02:16No, that'd be very cool.
02:17I've never seen one of these clocks before, so I'm hoping that Leonard knows something about it.
02:22Rick, you wanted to see me?
02:23Yeah, Leonard, come here.
02:24You ever seen anything like that?
02:28This is cool.
02:29Shuck that out of you in bed.
02:33This is a Darsh clock.
02:35Darsh made some of the first electric clocks in the U.S., including these babies right here,
02:39for both time-telling purposes and medical purposes.
02:42I mean, you would find this clock by a hospital bed of, let's say, a patient recovering from surgery.
02:48The doctor would hook the patient up to this coil here and send electric pulses through their muscles.
02:53And the patient gets his muscle therapy to recover from surgery or whatever.
02:58That's really cool.
03:01All right, so you want it to work?
03:03Yes.
03:04I have teenage daughters, and I'm thinking when the boys come over for dates, I'll let them try it out.
03:09Instead of using the gun, you're going to say, hey, come check out my thing.
03:12Check out my new clock.
03:15All right, so I definitely can make it all look good, but making it work is what I think you
03:20want for your daughters.
03:21Yeah.
03:23Okay.
03:23And then secondly, trying to find these attachments to this thing, I don't even know if I'm able to find
03:29it.
03:29Hey, Rick.
03:29Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick.
03:30You know me.
03:31I can track down anything.
03:33Anything.
03:34So no worries, no sweat.
03:37Very cool.
03:38I'm extremely concerned.
03:39I mean, he already told the customer that we could find the parts, and if we can't find them, I'm
03:43going to be the one in trouble.
03:45So to tear it apart, try to find some attachments, get some new batteries, give it all the right kind
03:51of finish, and then, of course, make it work again.
03:54I'm looking probably right around $700 to do the whole piece.
03:57$700, huh?
03:58Yeah.
04:00It'll be back to new.
04:01New again.
04:02It's going to look new.
04:03Hopefully, you have the attachments.
04:05Get the shock?
04:06And you should be able to get the shock, yes.
04:08Yes, absolutely.
04:10It's more than I wanted to spend, but it's just too cool.
04:17I got to do it.
04:18Yeah.
04:18Way cool.
04:19I'm surprised that Rick can find all these parts, because I've looked around out there, and I just don't see
04:24them, and I hope he can do it.
04:35This is the alarm clock?
04:38Yeah.
04:38I was expecting something a little bit bigger.
04:41Nope.
04:42Let's be careful taking it apart, because the clock mechanism's old, and it might be really delicate.
04:46Oh!
04:48Dude, be careful.
04:51Whoa.
04:52Look, it's still going.
04:53It's so badass.
04:55That's awesome.
04:56Whoa.
04:57It's like being inside a Rolex.
04:59I mean, like, I'm scared to even touch it, because you touch one thing, or bend the lever the wrong
05:04way.
05:04Let's take a picture of it before it falls apart.
05:06It's so cool that the mechanism on this clock is still ticking.
05:09I mean, this thing's over 100 years old.
05:11Talk about well-made.
05:13You haven't broken one thing yet.
05:15Isn't that great?
05:27Hey, I'm Rick.
05:28This is my dad, Rick, Cameron.
05:28Good to meet you, bud.
05:29So what's he looking for?
05:30He's looking for, like, a polo locker.
05:32He has a polo club, and so something to put his mallets and his gear and jersey and balls and
05:36all that kind of stuff inside.
05:38Like the polo pony kind of deal?
05:39Polo, I don't know.
05:40It's not, you know, not in the Speedo and swimming.
05:42Right.
05:43Polo's big in California.
05:44There's a lot of clubs.
05:45Yeah.
05:45I'm from Seattle, and so I'm building a club in Seattle.
05:48Oh, cool.
05:48So I want something that's going to be, you know, like center field and the big tournament weekends.
05:52Just as a display piece?
05:53Just a display piece.
05:54Okay.
05:54I got a couple ideas.
05:55Let's come on over here.
05:56I got it.
05:57Awesome.
05:57Polo is one of the oldest team sports, and to try to marry that with something that has some significance
06:02in history and refurbish it, I think it's just a great idea.
06:05And then on tournament weekends, I want to bring it out and showcase it and put it right in center
06:09field.
06:10Okay, so this might be a cool option.
06:12This is an old accettling generator.
06:14It used to make gas and stuff, but I'm really thinking that maybe we can put these mallets through here
06:19and they'd be exposed a little bit, maybe cut this out.
06:21That'd be cool, but the mallets are, like, 52 inches, so they're pretty tall.
06:26And I'd like something to really display, like, all the gear.
06:28So, like, a player's boots and knee pads and their helmet, the mallets, and then, you know, some balls.
06:33Yeah, that probably won't work.
06:35I think I got a better idea over here.
06:36What do you think about this gas pump?
06:39This is actually a 19, probably 39 to 45 Wayne gas pump.
06:45And this was actually one of their prettiest pumps they ever built.
06:48So it's got the shoulders on it.
06:49Yeah, this has got the right length and size to hold mallets.
06:52You can have a little bit of space as long as you get rid of everything inside.
06:55Yeah, I can do that.
06:57Okay, so I'll cut this out all the way around like that, and then we'll glass that whole thing.
07:03Okay?
07:03So you can see all the way into it.
07:06Okay, so now that we sort of figured out the inside stuff, what do you see in it being done
07:09on the outside?
07:10Well, I went through and designed a logo, and I've got team jerseys, and the jerseys are like a charcoal,
07:14and then they've got, like, navy, and then a real pop of bright green.
07:17Well, what about if we take and put these shoulders in wood gray?
07:20Oh, no, that'd be cool.
07:21Okay?
07:21And then we do the navy through here.
07:23Through the center, yeah.
07:24And then on the inside, we're going to have to take all this out.
07:29And since Polo's played on a field, I'm thinking, what if it was grass inside?
07:34Oh, now that would be cool.
07:35Right?
07:36That would be cool.
07:37Right?
07:37Play up the green theme.
07:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:39It's like they're on grass.
07:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:41Give it some grass.
07:42Oh, yeah.
07:42All right, okay, so that's starting to take shape.
07:44I love it.
07:45This Polo display case is going to look awesome.
07:48But creating something one of a kind takes extra time and energy, and that costs money.
07:52So I just hope this guy doesn't get sticker shock.
07:55All right, so let's say I go ahead, do the interior, paint it all up the way you want to
07:59paint it,
08:00do the wood grain on the sides, polish all this trim and everything, then mount everything.
08:04I'm looking at about, uh, I'm looking at probably $10,000 to do the whole thing.
08:11It's definitely more than I had budgeted, but this is something I'm building for the community.
08:14We don't have any place where people can come out and stomp divots and drink champagne.
08:19Yeah.
08:19So, I have pretty high expectations, but I think this is going to be pretty great.
08:24Let's do this.
08:25Awesome, awesome.
08:26Let's do this.
08:27Cool.
08:27Okay.
08:28There's a lot of pressure on Rick to deliver, because when I have my tournaments, my goal is
08:31to have 1,000 people.
08:32And I want this to be front and center, right next to the announcer.
08:36It's a Violet Ray.
08:38It's another electroshock device.
08:40Don't point that thing at me.
08:41Here's some boots, a jersey.
08:43The customer sent way more stuff than I expected to fit into this display pop.
08:48Holy .
08:49What is all this?
08:57Let's track down some alarm clock parts, yeah.
08:59Don't worry.
09:00They are there.
09:01They are in there.
09:02All right.
09:03We're restoring this early 1900s medical alarm clock.
09:07But we're missing the attachments that will make it deliver the electrical shot.
09:11Oh, man.
09:14Leonard promised that he would find them.
09:16I can track down anything.
09:18Anything.
09:19But I sent Brentley out with him to make sure that he does.
09:22They are in there.
09:23I know it.
09:24Maybe one more store?
09:27Okay, it's right around the corner.
09:29We're almost here.
09:29We've been all over town looking for these parts.
09:32I gotta keep this on track or my head's gonna explode.
09:37How you doing?
09:37Welcome to vintage Vegas.
09:48Here we go.
09:49What?
09:49That can't be what we're looking for.
09:51That's a baby incubator.
09:53No.
09:54From like 1950.
09:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:55Look.
09:56Explosion proof.
09:59Hospitals in the 1950s would pump pure oxygen into baby incubators, which was highly explosive.
10:05But these guys could guarantee that the parts inside would not make contact with any explosive gases.
10:10Imagine how harsh the 50s were where you had to guarantee that your baby would not explode.
10:17But this thing ain't got no clock parts.
10:20Eyes on the prize, man.
10:21Here we go.
10:22This might be exactly what we're looking for.
10:26It's a violet ray.
10:28It's another electroshock device, just like a clock is.
10:31Another piece of vintage medical quackery.
10:33Don't point that thing at me.
10:35See this hole?
10:36Yeah.
10:36You would put a glass electrode into the hole.
10:40Go bzzz.
10:41And there were all sorts of glass electrodes.
10:44They even had one to help cure the common cold.
10:47Take the electrodes sticking up your nose.
10:50Bzzz.
10:52So, is this what we need?
10:54Well, if we had the control box that contained the interrupter, we would have exactly what we need.
11:02But I don't really see the control box around here.
11:04I was hoping to scavenge the box or parts, but I don't think they have it.
11:09I don't think you should stress.
11:11We're at the end of the store.
11:12Come on.
11:13Okay, let's keep looking.
11:14I mean, I told Rick I would find this.
11:16I mean, Rick is gonna get upset.
11:17But we also told Rick we'd be done by now.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Need to get going.
11:21Well, it looks like I got myself into a little pickle here.
11:33Can you get us a table?
11:34Yeah.
11:35We just got this box of polo equipment from the client.
11:39You got that gas pump frame, cowboy?
11:42Okay, let's get everything out.
11:44Hey.
11:46This is the mallet.
11:47Okay.
11:47Is it bamboo?
11:49Yeah.
11:49This is like a very wealthy sport.
11:52Only the best.
11:53Why'd he say that's a trash can?
11:54Well, that's for the champagne.
11:56Man, why are these people so fancy?
11:59What the hell is that?
12:00A bridle hook?
12:01Beer holder.
12:02Here's some boots.
12:03Holy .
12:05What is all this ?
12:06This box is like a clown car.
12:09We gotta figure out how we're gonna mock it up
12:11to where we can fit all this gear inside this pump.
12:14This is everything that he wants inside the pump.
12:17Yeah, right.
12:19The boots are there.
12:20Put a mallet in there.
12:21Can you hold two things, Tyler?
12:23I think what we need to do is attach everything with wire.
12:27Hold on, hold on.
12:28How about here with the helmet, right?
12:29You can't see the jersey.
12:30You're gonna have to lower the jersey, right?
12:32Yeah, but the knee pads are gonna be the way.
12:34Right.
12:36All right, so let's try moving everything up one inch.
12:43I can't see it.
12:44Okay, here you go.
12:47Okay, get them where you want them.
12:49Okay, let go.
12:49And then we can put this bridle hook right here
12:52as a ball holder.
12:53Look.
12:55What do you think?
12:57You like that, Rick?
12:58I mean, it looks like a mess at the moment,
13:01but I like it.
13:02The biggest thing is how to mount each one of those things
13:06without seeing all those wires.
13:08I want it looking like it's suspended in air.
13:10Even though we found a way to fit everything in there,
13:13making a gas pump feel like it was meant to hold polo equipment
13:16is gonna be tough.
13:18I can see it in my head, but I don't know how we're gonna get there.
13:22Ted, remember that shocking alarm clock?
13:24Right.
13:25Bradley and I have been looking for parts all over town,
13:28and we couldn't find them.
13:29Okay.
13:30And so I'm thinking maybe you can help me make the parts.
13:35Okay, well, what exactly is it that you need?
13:37The most important component are the electrodes
13:40that administer the shock.
13:41They're cylindrical tubes.
13:43They have to conduct electricity.
13:45They have wires that attach to them.
13:47Of course.
13:47Let's head into the fab room.
13:49We'll see what we can come up with.
13:50I really appreciate this.
13:52Everything's cylindrical,
13:52so we're probably gonna make the majority of that on a lathe.
13:55Cool.
13:56The lathe.
13:57Okay, Leonard.
13:58Probably the handle for the electrode
13:59is gonna be the easiest thing to start with,
14:01so we'll chuck this up in a lathe.
14:02We'll take just a little tiny bit of metal off the outside
14:04just to make sure it's perfectly smoothed around,
14:06and then we can hollow it out for the shaft of the handle to go through.
14:09Take the glasses on.
14:10There you go.
14:11All right.
14:12Let's get rolling.
14:14Okay.
14:15Here we go.
14:15Wow, look at that shine.
14:17Oh, that is beautiful.
14:19Okay.
14:20There.
14:21How's that?
14:22Now it's nice and perfectly round.
14:23We're gonna bore a hole in the middle of this,
14:25so watch and learn.
14:27All right.
14:27You just slowly feed the drill a bit.
14:29Whoa!
14:30So now we're creating a hole that's perfectly round,
14:32and then we're gonna use a different attachment
14:34that will allow me to create threads
14:36on the inside of the hole.
14:38Look at that.
14:39Just like magic.
14:40So you go find some wood for the handle,
14:42and I'll get busy on this.
14:43Got it.
14:44Oh, thanks so much.
14:45Take your time finding that wood now.
14:47Oh, my goodness.
14:50A customer wants us to turn an old gas pump
14:53into a polo display case,
14:55and getting all that gear into such a small space
14:58has been no easy task.
15:00So I had my guys custom fabricate special mounts
15:03for the pads, the helmet, and the mallets.
15:05And then I added in a few more special touches
15:08to really take this project to a new level.
15:11I'm really proud of the way this thing turned out.
15:14I just hope the customer feels the same way.
15:18Rick!
15:19Yeah?
15:21Cameron's here!
15:22Hey, Cameron.
15:23Rick, how you doing?
15:24Good, how you doing?
15:25Good seeing you.
15:26Good seeing you.
15:27So you ready to see it?
15:28I'm ready to see it.
15:28Okay, it's right over here.
15:29I got to tell you that all that stuff you sent,
15:32to be able to put it in that pump,
15:33I didn't think I was ever going to make it.
15:35All right, Cameron, you ready for this?
15:36I'm ready. Let's see this thing.
15:37Here we go.
15:38One, two, three.
15:40Check it out.
15:42Oh, look at that!
15:51I got to tell you that everything that you sent,
15:53I didn't think it was going to fit.
15:55I'm here at Rick's to pick up a locker to hold polo gear.
15:58I have some pretty high expectations for this locker,
16:00but I'm really hoping that Rick can pull it off.
16:02Here we go.
16:03One, two, three.
16:04Check it out.
16:07Oh, look at that!
16:10Oh, man.
16:13Oh, my gosh.
16:14Rick, man, you did it.
16:16Oh, that is beautiful.
16:17You've got the jersey in the back, the boots,
16:19the helmet, everything.
16:21Oh, and the champagne.
16:22Oh, I love it.
16:24And the bridle hooks for the balls.
16:25That's awesome.
16:26Oh, look at the grass, man!
16:28The grass!
16:30Rick, I never expected anything like this.
16:33There's a lot to that little bad boy right there.
16:35No kidding.
16:36What we did is we took the pump all the way apart,
16:38and I ended up with just a frame.
16:40And then we went and painted the frame.
16:42Ted did all this wood grain.
16:44Then we painted the doors to match the blue in your logo.
16:47It was sort of like a little puzzle,
16:49sticking everything in there and making it look good.
16:51So you open it up like this.
16:52We mounted all this bracket inside there
16:54to be able to hold these mallet heads.
16:57The helmet's on a hook that comes from the back of the wood.
17:00And down in here, you can sort of see the boots
17:01and the knee pads are all mounted.
17:02So the only thing when you shake it around
17:04that's gonna move is these glasses.
17:06These glasses.
17:07Yep.
17:07And if you look inside there,
17:08you can sort of see the mirror up on top.
17:10So you can see the tops of the mallets.
17:12It just looks like a larger space
17:14with everything reflecting off of each other in there.
17:17Check out the back.
17:18What do you think?
17:19Oh, my gosh, I love it.
17:20Look at that.
17:20Pure horsepower.
17:21Oh, I love that.
17:23So on the top of it,
17:24we ended up putting your logo
17:25with the Seattle Questuring Club on there.
17:27Yeah.
17:27So we polished it all out.
17:29And then again, your logo here.
17:30So on the back half, it still looks like a gas pump.
17:33Still looks like a pump.
17:34Oh, I love it.
17:36Little different than that rusty old pump before.
17:38Yeah.
17:39Oh, my gosh.
17:39I can't believe the transformation.
17:41Oh, I'm so excited.
17:42And the champagne on the side.
17:44I want a glass now, right?
17:45You want to toast one up?
17:46Oh, let's toast to this.
17:50Everything that he picked is so elegant.
17:52All the materials and the colors, you know,
17:54they call it the sport of kings.
17:55And this piece definitely looks like it was built for a king.
17:58Here's to a great project, Rick.
18:05We've been working really hard on this alarm clock.
18:08Leonard wasn't able to find the parts,
18:10so Ted's been busting his ass to try to get them done on time.
18:16Bill's here for the alarm clock.
18:17Hey, Bill.
18:18Hey, good to see you again.
18:19How you been?
18:19Thanks, Ty.
18:19Oh, I'm so excited.
18:20Let's go.
18:21It's in the back.
18:21Leonard?
18:22Yeah.
18:22You're coming with me, too.
18:23All right.
18:24Here it is.
18:27All right.
18:27So you dropped it off a little while ago,
18:29but what do you remember?
18:30I was in parts.
18:32It looked ugly and dingy, and it was a mess.
18:35Yeah, it was bad, right?
18:36All right.
18:37So you ready for this thing?
18:38Yeah, let's see it.
18:39Okay, here we go.
18:41One, two, three.
18:43Oh, my goodness.
18:48Wow, look at that shine.
18:50It looks so different.
18:52It's hardly recognizable.
18:53Is it the...
18:54It is the same thing I brought here.
18:56It is the same exactly.
18:57It is, uh...
18:58That's a miracle.
18:59Look at that.
19:01So how'd you do it?
19:02When it came in, you know, it was a little decrepit.
19:04It was missing some pieces.
19:05And the metal was really rusty.
19:07Because of the era, it wouldn't have been chromed,
19:10but we wanted it with some shine.
19:11I wanted it to pop.
19:12Yeah, definitely.
19:13I wanted it to look like a really beautiful piece.
19:15So we nickel-plated all the exposed metal,
19:17because that's the material that would be period-correct
19:19for something that was made before 1935.
19:22And then on the bottom...
19:23See all the connections going on down in there?
19:25Oh, yeah.
19:26The stuff that was inside there was so rotted
19:27that you couldn't tell what wire went where.
19:29So we basically had to start all over
19:32and figure out how it worked.
19:33That part was very difficult.
19:36We figured out where everything goes.
19:38This here is the lever that changes the settings.
19:40So let's say we're in the hospital,
19:42and you want the nurse to come in...
19:44Right.
19:44...and you can't yell, you know, across the hospital.
19:47So we turn this to the call bell.
19:49Okay.
19:50Okay.
19:51Whoa!
19:52Okay?
19:53And then it would notify somebody, and they'd hear it.
19:56That's...that's pretty cool.
19:57Now, if you remember, Leonard promised
19:59that he could find all the attachments,
20:01but that didn't quite work out.
20:02So Ted actually ended up making
20:04all these parts off of your picture.
20:07I can't believe you recreated them.
20:09I mean, from a picture.
20:10This is actually a tongue depressor
20:12with a light in the end of it.
20:13All right.
20:14These two are actually the shock units.
20:17So you would hold on to this,
20:17and you'd get that jolt.
20:19All right, but the real question is, does it shock?
20:21Yeah.
20:21So because Leonard didn't find the parts...
20:24Right.
20:24...Leonard's gonna take the first hit,
20:26if you know what I mean.
20:27I'm good with that.
20:28Well, I'll be your medical guinea pig.
20:30I gotta do what I gotta do.
20:32All right, so the nurse would give the patient
20:34the negative side.
20:35There you go.
20:36You're gonna hold that.
20:37And then the nurse would hold the positive side
20:39down here in the wooden handle,
20:40so it's insulated.
20:42Okay?
20:42Okay.
20:43Okay?
20:43I'm gonna turn it on.
20:45Okay, here we go.
20:46You ready?
20:46I'm ready.
20:47Go ahead, let her rip.
20:48Okay.
20:48Jump on that end.
20:58So you like?
21:00I feel like Zeus, the god of lightning,
21:04with electricity searching through my arms.
21:07Did it hurt?
21:07It doesn't hurt, but you definitely feel the jolt
21:10go through your muscles.
21:11This is really cool.
21:14I'm nearly speechless.
21:15I mean, it was such a big project.
21:17That's awesome.
21:17Good.
21:17Thank you so very much.
21:18You bet it.
21:19You got it.
21:20I'm excited to set it up in my living room
21:22and scare off my daughter's perspective dates.
21:24It's gonna be fun.
21:26Come ready for another hit.
21:27You only get one a day, Leonard.
