One unusual item you’ll always find in Martha’s garden? Horseradish. But there’s a very specific way you should plant this root vegetable in your garden. In this video, Martha Stewart explains how she grows horseradish and uses it in the kitchen for homemade horseradish sauce.

00:00I think every garden should have some unusual things in it. For me, a horseradish patch.
00:05Dig a hole that's at least 20 inches deep. I'm using nursery pots that are made out of plastic
00:11and we've cut the bottoms out of these pots and I'm digging the holes deep enough so that these
00:15pots fit down in the hole and the top of the pot will be almost level with the surface of
00:20the earth.
00:20Now I'm going to add good sand to the bottom of the hole just to keep the drainage going very
00:26well
00:26and fill the bottom of this pot with good topsoil instead of the subsoil that was there before.
00:32To get horseradish roots ready for planting, soak them in water for at least 24 hours.
00:39Here's a root you can see there's a nice green growth right at the top. Now plant this in your
00:44soil so that the top of the root is almost level with the top of the garden and keep adding
00:49your
00:50compost and your topsoil until you fill in your container. I've decided I want a lot of horseradish.
