In Memory of Sir Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal (R.A.) — 88 Years Since 1938

In the early hours of 21st April 1938, Iqbal sat with Javid and little Muneera, holding them close one last time. As Fajr neared, he softly recited:

سرودِ رفتہ باز آید کہ ناید؟
نسیمے از حجاز آید کہ ناید؟
سرآمد روزگار این فقیرے
دگر داناے راز آید کہ ناید؟

At 4:04 AM, in the lap of his servant Ali Bakhsh, Iqbal returned to his Creator.

Sarood-e-rafta baaz aayad ke na aayad?
Naseemay az Hijaz aayad ke na aayad?
Sar-aamad rozgaar-e-in faqeeray
Digar daana-e-raaz aayad ke na aayad?

Whether the bygone melody comes back, whether it does not?
Whether a sweet-breeze blows from Hijaz, whether it does not?
This mendicant’s life draws its close,
Whether a knower of the secret comes a day, whether not?

گزرا ہوا سرود دوبارہ آتا ہے یا نہیں،
حجاز سے نسیم دوبارہ آتی ہے یا نہیں،
اس فقیر کی زندگی کا آخری وقت آن پہنچا،
کوئی دوسرا دانائے راز آتا ہے یا نہیں

سرودِ رفتہ باز آئے نہ آئے
وہ خوشبوئے حجاز آئے نہ آئے
ہے اِس درویش کا اب وقتِ رحلت
کوئی دانائے راز آئے نہ آئے
