00:00My name's Mike Rowe, and this is my job.
00:05I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty.
00:10Dirty enough for you?
00:11Hard-working men and women who earn an honest living.
00:13That's a nice-looking blast.
00:15You should see my spleen.
00:16Too lonely.
00:17Doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us.
00:21My mom right now is washing with both hands over her face.
00:25Now, get ready to get dirty.
00:31Coming up on Dirty Jobs.
00:33It's not that difficult.
00:35In Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
00:36Would you crawl under?
00:38The medical waste treatment and disposal business.
00:40Dirty pig.
00:41Is not exactly rocket science.
00:43I think I could do this all day.
00:45Then, it's a treasure hunt.
00:47There's eight.
00:48For infectious material.
00:50Holy smokes.
00:51And a bobcat bacteria bonanza.
00:53No, I can't see anything.
00:55Holy crap.
00:56All before the sparks really start to fly.
00:58Ow.
00:59Ow.
01:00One of the most exciting dirty jobs.
01:02Ever.
01:05Oh, God.
01:06Oh, God.
01:08Ow!
01:10Ow!
01:10Ah!
01:11Ah!
01:12Ah!
01:12Ah!
01:14Ah!
01:18Ah!
01:19This is the man comfort.
01:20Apparently, we're in a hazardous area, according to my shirt, we'll be transporting medical waste.
01:24My hat says the same thing.
01:26This is Will, this is Mike, this is Rob.
01:28We're Bob.
01:28Bob.
01:29I prefer Bob.
01:29You prefer Mike or Michael?
01:31Mike.
01:31You prefer William, Will or Bill?
01:33Will is fine.
01:34Alright.
01:34I'll go with Mike, and what's up?
01:37You seem like the boss, so maybe you can tell me where I am and what I'm doing here.
01:40This is Medical Waste Transport Incorporated, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
01:44Yep.
01:44We're a regional medical waste transporter and treatment firm.
01:48You're related to him, right?
01:49Yep.
01:50Son? I mean, clearly.
01:51Yep.
01:51How many sons you got?
01:52I don't have any sons.
01:54How many sons he had?
01:55Me and my brother, Matt.
01:56You're not a member of the family, but you're a member of the team.
01:58Yep.
01:59And what do you do here exactly?
02:00I just treat medical waste, run the machine, and clean the shop.
02:04So, the machine behind us seems to be the dominant device in the facility,
02:10but it's making a sound every few seconds as though I'm a loser on a game show.
02:14What's happening?
02:15Well, you're not calling her by its name.
02:17Her name is Miss Piggy, not the machine.
02:20You refer to this whole device as Miss Piggy?
02:23Yeah, Miss Piggy.
02:24And why do you call her that?
02:25She's hungry.
02:26She eats a lot.
02:27She just lays there.
02:28She's a pig.
02:29She just lays there and eats.
02:30It's, it eats, it eats.
02:31All right.
02:32Why does medical waste need to be treated?
02:34It's designated as an infectious material.
02:37They don't want it to go in the landfill.
02:39Certain materials, especially sharps, and any blood-enaminated items,
02:44have to be treated.
02:45They have to be sterilized before they are going to the landfill.
02:49Sure.
02:50What happened to Will?
02:51What just happened?
02:53I lost him.
02:54Will, you wandered off in the middle of a prime-time TV show.
02:57Yep.
02:57All right.
02:57And in the future, actually, it's fine.
02:59We don't mind.
03:00Yeah.
03:00When you say sharps, you're referring to needles, of course.
03:02Needles, scalpels, any item like that that can penetrate the skin.
03:07So the trucks will come in from all over South Dakota with all kinds of medical waste in it.
03:13Yep.
03:13And they come in in these containers?
03:15Either these containers are totes or boxes.
03:18We've got a few squares, but that's basically it, mainly barrels.
03:22You've actually gotten to the point where you're categorizing your medical waste in terms of the geometric design of the
03:29container.
03:29Well, some people like to use barrels.
03:32Some people like to use squares because then you can put them underneath lower places.
03:36Have you done any work with, say, a parallelogram or rhombus?
03:39I don't think so.
03:40Maybe in the future.
03:42Thoughts on this, Mike?
03:43No.
03:43All right.
03:45So the truck that's starting up behind us right now and pulling out is going to go out on the
03:49road and pick up more medical waste.
03:54And talk about that sign there on the truck.
03:56It's also the same sign that's right here.
03:59I always thought that referred to something nuclear, this thing right here.
04:03But it's not, is it?
04:04No.
04:05Just waste.
04:05That's right.
04:06That's the universal biohazard symbol.
04:08But you'll also notice that we have a biohazard symbol on the men's bathroom door.
04:12You know what?
04:13You should put another one on there.
04:14Doug was in there earlier, and I'm not sure we have a symbol for that.
04:16That's Matt's specialty.
04:17He wanted to impress everybody.
04:19Very nice.
04:20And this stuff is just what?
04:21What, I mean, what could it be?
04:23Any blood contaminated item, let's say tubing or tubing with blood in it.
04:30Laboratory materials like the petri dishes that they do cultures or culture samples in or blood samples.
04:37So would you like to load?
04:38I'd like to load Miss Piggy.
04:40I'd like to give Miss Piggy something to think about.
04:42Yeah, well.
04:42Just like this.
04:44Not that difficult.
04:46I got it.
04:47All right, that's what I'm going to do.
04:48And then once you do that, you have to wash these barrels, you know.
04:50Uh-huh.
04:52That happens over there in the barrel washing area?
04:54Yep.
04:56Just like this.
04:57Good.
04:58Also not that difficult.
04:59Nope.
04:59I'm taking it all in.
05:00I got it.
05:01You said something about inspecting it, though, before it goes in?
05:03Yep.
05:04Let's just take this barrel off here real quick.
05:09Ah!
05:12See?
05:12Honestly?
05:13What?
05:14That's good.
05:14I have to say.
05:15I got to say.
05:18You know, you got me.
05:20How long?
05:21Really?
05:21Seriously?
05:24Not since those f***ing Louisiana with that alligator have I actually, that was a good one.
05:29That's too bad.
05:31Look at that, man.
05:31We lost another executive producer.
05:34I'm going to miss her.
05:37I'm going to miss her.
05:41It's good.
05:42Now you played it just right.
05:43Set me up good.
05:44Nice one.
05:45All right.
05:45That's a good one.
05:46You know what?
05:47Keep her handy, though.
05:48I got some ideas for when we're done shooting.
05:51Big ideas.
05:55Look at that, man.
05:55You really, you really went out on a limb with this thing.
06:00No, I got to hand it to you.
06:02Take it.
06:02Take it.
06:03Take it.
06:04No thumbs up.
06:06Okay.
06:06All right.
06:07Now why would I just dump it?
06:12That's a good one.
06:12The medical waste comes to Bob's company from hospitals, veterinarians, prisons, mortuaries, and even tattoo parlors.
06:19And not only do they serve South Dakota, but all areas in about a 200-mile radius, including parts of
06:26Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska.
06:28All right.
06:29So now you're walking over here.
06:30Yep.
06:32Nice and clean.
06:34Sure.
06:35Now is this some sort of special cleaning solution or just water?
06:39Bleach.
06:40Bleach.
06:40It smells like bleach, yeah.
06:42I need to shove it.
06:43All right.
06:44I'm waiting for something mechanical to take it out of my grip, but that's probably not going to happen.
06:52Where did this come from, this apparatus?
06:55Our boss.
06:57Your boss?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Rob?
07:01Rob, why don't you come on over here and brag about the whatever this is.
07:06You got a name for this?
07:06This is a barrel washer.
07:08They have barrel washers for sale.
07:10They're about $5,000.
07:12I didn't want to spend it, so I just took and made this for $50.
07:18We just took and put a sump pump in there, hooked up some hoses, ran these hoses up on top,
07:27so
07:28then now when you kick her on, she works it.
07:34So I saved myself about $4,500.
07:36That's not bad.
07:37No, more than that.
07:38You said this was $50.
07:39Well, that's $4,000.
07:41The sump pump's $950.
07:43Sump pumps are more than that now.
07:44Oh, okay.
07:45The tubing costs a little bit.
07:46Tubing has gone up lately.
07:47I don't know what it is with the tubes.
07:49Now, why is it that Miss Piggy has a name and this is just a barrel washer?
07:55I don't know.
07:56I haven't dreamed of a name for it.
07:58Well, I mean, let's put our heads together and come up with something.
08:00Well, nothing else really happens on this program.
08:03We ought to be able to name an inanimate object.
08:06Oh, man.
08:06The barrel washer.
08:08The barrel washer is so literal, Mike.
08:11I'm thinking, I mean, if we want to, you got Miss Piggy over there.
08:14This could be a squirting Kermit.
08:18I mean, why not?
08:19But this Kermit is squirting fluids straight up into Miss Piggy.
08:23Let's make that pig oink.
08:25Okay, first of all, Mike.
08:27Yes, Will.
08:28Control panel.
08:29Yeah, it's beautiful.
08:31Okay.
08:32Press that lift up button once.
08:34Okay.
08:35And then wait for Miss Piggy to tell you what to do, and we'll go from there.
08:39This, I like this job.
08:41Okay.
08:42So far, it's good.
08:43All right, press the lift up button and hold it.
08:46Use the other hand so you can look this direction.
08:50Okay.
08:51Okay.
08:51As soon as we get about, watch this tool right here, and it will clamp the bottom of the
08:56toe.
08:57Okay.
08:57See how it clamps it so it won't fall in the shredder?
09:00Yeah.
09:00Okay.
09:00Now you can dump it all in there.
09:02Go ahead and hold it up until...
09:03All the way up.
09:03Yep.
09:04Okay.
09:05All right.
09:05Unloaded.
09:06Now press the lift down button.
09:09And then hold it until the flat closed light turns on, and that's how you feed Miss Piggy.
09:15Mike, I could do this all day.
09:16Yeah.
09:18I will.
09:18Okay.
09:22And then that's it.
09:23And then we put more medical waste in there.
09:25This is a dream job.
09:27It is.
09:27Now do you mix up the fingers you use to press the buttons?
09:30Sometimes.
09:30You go with the thumb occasionally.
09:31Mix, you know, pointer.
09:33Whatever.
09:34Whatever.
09:42Back to Kermit, Mike.
09:43I believe you mean Mr. Squirting, Kermit.
09:45Severin.
09:50Coming up.
09:50Miss Piggy's upset.
09:52It's faulted now.
09:52When you go to fix the ravenous Miss Piggy.
09:55What's this?
09:55That's a magnetron.
09:57Magnetron.
09:57You get those in like a microwave.
09:59Yep.
09:59Just make sure you don't want kids.
10:01You might be sterile by the time.
10:02Certainly sterile.
10:03Good.
10:03Yeah.
10:04And later.
10:05Oh, look at that.
10:05That's just jammed full of biohazardous contagion.
10:09It's time for a Miss Piggy enema.
10:11That's my big doctor's orders.
10:21Okay.
10:22That's a fault.
10:23What's a fault?
10:24Miss Piggy's upset.
10:25It's faulted now.
10:26We need to figure out what the deal is.
10:28Okay.
10:28Nope.
10:29There's a bigger screen right up here.
10:32Okay.
10:35Right here.
10:36Look right here.
10:37Wow.
10:37What's the problem?
10:38What you got?
10:39You got a, you got a, you got a temperature fault.
10:42Set it, reset the manual.
10:43Yeah.
10:44Set it to automatic.
10:46And then start.
10:48And then it kicks on.
10:50So it got too hot or not hot enough?
10:52It's a little cool.
10:53It'll warm back up though.
10:55So this is the, this is Miss Piggy's brain right here.
10:57That's right.
10:58If you want to open it up, we can check inside if you want.
11:00What a machine misfits.
11:03We put new screws and nuts in here.
11:05So these are just, these are just things that's fallen out of Miss Piggy.
11:08And we're not sure what they do.
11:10Well, we can't get them back in.
11:13We replaced all of them.
11:14I, I, I know you do.
11:15Okay.
11:16What's this?
11:17Oh, that's a magnetron.
11:18We might switch one out later.
11:19Magnetron.
11:20You get those in like a microwave.
11:21Yep.
11:22Yep.
11:23They're in all of these.
11:23They're right behind here.
11:25So we're surrounded right now by, I mean, the radiation in here, we're finished.
11:30You might be sterile by the time.
11:31Certainly sterile.
11:32Good.
11:32Yeah.
11:32Okay.
11:33But it's okay.
11:34What does that mean?
11:36Loud?
11:36Yeah.
11:37Will didn't have the heart to tell me that this picture was a radio wave radiation warning.
11:43It's just pictures to scare you, uh, city flickers.
11:45Oh, I've seen men and little men in distress in all sorts of iterations.
11:51Miss Piggy is basically just one large microwave oven.
11:53And in addition to shredding the medical waste, she also zaps it with microwaves and heat, thus decontaminating it.
12:01Then, to find out more, I was brought to the back of Miss Piggy to prepare a little test to
12:06see her effectiveness.
12:07These little capsules, these little capsules, these are bacteriological indicator capsules.
12:11Yeah.
12:12We put these inside of these yellow Gore-Tex, like this, and then we put these in a port underneath
12:21the shredder, and then they are come up through the machine, and they are come out the end.
12:2945 minutes or an hour after they go through.
12:32Bob tells me that the capsules contain a bacteria which reacts to the heat used to treat the waste.
12:38So each one is in its own little labeled, right, Vortex, Velcro-sealed thing.
12:43If the microwaves and the heat are doing their job, then the chemical reaction gives a proverbial thumbs up.
12:49If not, well, I guess the black helicopters come and take us all away.
12:53We were required to run the test once a week.
12:55Gotcha.
12:57What the heck is that?
12:58That's the material coming out the back.
13:02Is this the front or the back?
13:05This is the back.
13:06This is the back.
13:06Where's it coming out?
13:08It comes up through this tube.
13:11So you're dumping material in a hopper behind us.
13:16That material is coming through this thing.
13:18Right.
13:18That material is shredded.
13:19It drops down into this auger, and the auger slowly moves it up.
13:24These microwaves are what add most of the heat.
13:28This is the material that is getting towards the end of the treatment process.
13:32It is dropping down there, and then it goes out.
13:35That's weirdly beautiful, Bob.
13:37It's every color of the rainbow in there.
13:39I'm looking at rubber.
13:42What appears to be a fine sheen of lubricant over most everything.
13:48Some pointy stuff?
13:49Maybe?
13:50A lot of red.
13:51What is the red?
13:52It's not blood, is it?
13:53It's the bags.
13:54The red bag?
13:55Oh, the bags in the bio?
13:56Yep.
13:57Come with it.
13:57Yep, it's the red bags.
13:58The plastic bags.
13:59Oh, I got you.
14:00That's nice.
14:01And so the shredding process is very, very slow, painstaking.
14:05Oh, she will grind about 500 to 800 pounds an hour.
14:09She?
14:09You really have committed to this whole Miss Piggy thing.
14:12Miss Piggy is a living creature.
14:16She works good.
14:17She is the font from which all things flow.
14:25What you can do, you put these inside of here.
14:28All right, load up a couple of those.
14:29We do 10.
14:3110?
14:31Okay.
14:32Just put them in.
14:32How did you get into this business, exactly?
14:36I was in the hazardous waste cleanup business.
14:38Yeah.
14:39Doing asbestos and lead and contaminated soil.
14:44That's awesome.
14:45This was about, like, 1990.
14:47And at that time, there were no regulations on infectious waste.
14:51They were just throwing it in the landfill at that time.
14:52In 1990?
14:531990.
14:54Unbelievable.
14:55And the state of South Dakota propagated a regulation identifying medical waste.
15:02What was that word you just used?
15:03Promulgating.
15:04Promulgating.
15:05Damn.
15:06All right.
15:06Passed the law.
15:07Yeah, I got it.
15:08And so my mom at that time was a nurse.
15:12And the state sent out a letter to everybody saying, hey, you can't throw this stuff.
15:15And it was a long list of items that can't be thrown in the landfill.
15:19She says, well, why don't you start a business treating medical waste?
15:23And I said, why don't I start a business treating medical waste?
15:26Doing medical waste.
15:27Right.
15:27So you're here because your mother, a very practical woman who was a nurse at the time,
15:31saw an opportunity, and thought, well, my boy Bob, this is the job for him.
15:37Well, I got ticketed out of, this is actually a much nicer job than the one I had before.
15:41Yeah, tell me again.
15:42What were you doing?
15:42Hazardous waste and asbestos cleanup.
15:44And like, so that's like lead and everything.
15:47Lead and cadmium cleanup and paint, lead-based paint.
15:52There's all kinds of stuff out there that's bad.
15:54So you've seen hazardous waste, infectious materials, and just in general, a broad smorgasbord
15:59of crap all across this great country.
16:01You bet.
16:02That's great.
16:03Yeah, for the last, since I got out of Iowa State, all I've done is clean up and tell
16:08people what to do.
16:09Well, today's not going to be a whole lot different, I'm afraid.
16:13Coming up.
16:14A little hand cart.
16:17It's the first Dirty Jobs musical.
16:19What's that smell?
16:21I think it's a fart.
16:23And later.
16:24There it is.
16:24Holy smokes.
16:25Things are really heating up on Dirty Jobs.
16:27Looking for bacteria test capsules.
16:29Oh my God, did you see that?
16:30Okay, let's grab it.
16:32It's like an exciting, infectious treasure hunt.
16:34There's another one right there.
16:35The snake's alive, number five.
16:37That's amazing.
16:37I'll tell you, man.
16:46Okay, now we're going to do the tests.
16:49These tests go in two at a time.
16:51Yep.
16:52Through that little port.
16:53Why do I have gloves on?
16:55Well, you might want them.
16:57Really?
16:57You might not.
16:58That's kind of hot down there.
16:59All right.
17:00Will you crawl under?
17:03All right.
17:05Oh, look at that.
17:06That's just jammed full of biohazardous contagion.
17:11Okay, just push the stuff out of the way.
17:13Just push it in.
17:15Push it in.
17:18How far into Miss Piggy should I shove my stick?
17:21As far as it'll go.
17:25Oh, probably shouldn't be falling out like that, right?
17:28Come on, Miss Piggy.
17:29Take it.
17:31Dirty pig.
17:33That's my pig.
17:37There you go.
17:38There you go.
17:38That should be good.
17:39Then you want to take those test samples.
17:42Yep.
17:42All right, so the number one and number two test samples.
17:45We're going to go into a...
17:46That hole.
17:47And what is the hole?
17:48Is that a session?
17:49That's Miss Piggy's mouth up there.
17:50Yeah, this is so they don't get grounded up.
17:53Okay.
17:53That's why we put them in down here.
17:55If you put them up top, it'll just...
17:57It won't work.
17:58It's not really your mouth.
17:59I mean, really, to go with the metaphor,
18:01the mouth is over there.
18:02This would be like...
18:03I guess like if Miss Piggy had a tracheotomy, right?
18:07We'd be slipping it in in that area.
18:09On the other side of her teeth.
18:12So the little capsules in there don't get chewed up.
18:17That's what I'm going to be doing for the next 10 minutes.
18:20What are you doing?
18:21I'm riding when they went in.
18:23And then we'll keep track.
18:25They usually come out in 40 minutes.
18:28Come out over there on the other end.
18:29Right there.
18:30All the way up there.
18:31Oh, man.
18:31We haven't seen that part of the pig yet.
18:33This piggy sphincter is smoking ominously.
18:41The tool is long for the job.
18:44It's unnecessarily long.
18:46It could be a little fatter, too.
18:48A little more girth.
18:50The longer the tool, the bigger the void.
18:53I suppose.
18:54But with the right girth, you can hit the sides.
18:56Get it in a little more cleanly.
19:03Whoops.
19:08Take it, Piggy.
19:09Take it.
19:10Take it.
19:11Eat it.
19:14She's hungry again.
19:15Between 5 and 700 pounds of medical waste is processed here every hour.
19:20If she were to operate around the clock, Miss Piggy could consume nearly 8 tons per day.
19:27Okay, I think we need to take the dumpster out of here now.
19:30The dumpster?
19:30Yep.
19:31Where's the dumpster?
19:32This is the dumpster right here.
19:33A truck is going to come pick it up right now.
19:35So, put this, uh, our nice makeshift thing here right into the bucket so we don't leak any of
19:44this crap on the floor.
19:45Right.
19:47And then we'll just hold it like that until this is out of here.
19:49And then we'll bring the skid loader in.
19:51And then, all right, that's how that works.
19:52It adds a specific smell to it.
19:54It smells good, doesn't it?
19:56I wouldn't go with good, but...
19:59All right, so if you haven't seen it before, that's all the stuff that most self-respecting
20:02hospitals would throw out.
20:04That's the stuff you don't want.
20:05It's been shredded by Miss Piggy, and now it's, uh, gone off to a landfill, having been
20:10safely shredded.
20:11To repeat, the waste will still go to the landfill, only now it's no longer a biohazard, which
20:17means, I guess, if you're ever in Sioux Falls, you can feel free to find the local dump
20:21and roll around in some shredded medical waste.
20:23Hey, do you want to bring the dumpster in, Mike?
20:25Sure.
20:26Why don't you hop in here, Mike?
20:27Pretty nice little bobcat.
20:28Oh, she's a beaut.
20:29Turn the key on right up there.
20:31Give her a little bit of throttle.
20:32It's been a while.
20:33Okay, let's go inside.
20:34It's not the easiest to see in front of you.
20:37No, I can't see anything.
20:44Bring the dumpster down a little bit so you can see, and put the chute in the middle
20:48of this blue thing.
20:49All right.
20:50Just slide right underneath it.
20:52That's great.
20:53Move it a little bit more this way, otherwise it's going to be handy on its end.
20:56Oh.
20:57Angle it that way?
20:58Yep.
21:01Whoops.
21:02There's it.
21:04Lift it up a little.
21:05You got to press that.
21:06You got to press that green button again, Mike.
21:09Always something.
21:15Good?
21:15Yep.
21:16Chopper down and shut it off.
21:20All right.
21:21Perfect.
21:22Grant like a champ.
21:25So we need to unload the truck, get some more medical waste out here.
21:28So basically that's it.
21:29All day long, feed the pig.
21:30Make pickups.
21:31Feed the pig.
21:32Go get stuff.
21:35Pig's calling.
21:36That's a two-wheeler for you.
21:37All right.
21:39I can just go in there and bring that stuff up front.
21:44If you hadn't already noticed, the job of a medical waste disposal expert, albeit important
21:49and necessary, can be a job, as many are, of monotony.
21:54Is this the approved method?
21:55Yep.
21:55I don't know where.
21:59There you go.
22:01Some biohazardous, infectious material for you.
22:04So it's important that one finds a way to pass the time.
22:07That's right.
22:09And I learned something about myself today.
22:11Medical waste brings out the songwriter in me.
22:16I'm getting some medical waste.
22:21I'm getting some hazardous crap.
22:25I'm putting it onto my hand cart.
22:28What do you think about that?
22:36It's kind of catchy, actually.
22:40Just the one hand cart.
22:42Just the one.
22:43It just so happens we only have one two-wheeler here.
22:45How about that?
22:46It's like you knew I was coming.
22:48The waste comes in big, giant barrels of red.
22:52Sometimes I look at them thinking I'm dead.
22:56I scoop them up on my little hand cart.
22:59What's that smell?
23:01I think it's a fart.
23:03I'm picking up hazardous waste.
23:07Full of brains and needles.
23:10I shouldn't have said needles.
23:14Cause nothing rhymes with needles.
23:23Wasted.
23:27About 90% of medical waste in the U.S. is incinerated, releasing a variety of pollutants into the air.
23:33As an alternative, companies are recycling plastic medical waste into oil similar to biofuel.
23:38This process can extract about one liter of fuel from every kilogram of plastics.
23:49How are we doing on this end?
23:50Very good.
23:50Just waiting for the tests.
23:52And how much longer for the capsules to come out?
23:55They should be any minute now.
23:57I'll put them in at 11.45.
23:59And how about we know?
24:00There'll be a sound?
24:01No, you just gotta stand here and wait.
24:04Oh, to look for the capsules.
24:06Yeah.
24:06Oh, I see.
24:07They come out.
24:07The yellow packets.
24:08And then we scoop them out, of course.
24:09That's why they're yellow.
24:10They're easy to see.
24:11Yeah.
24:12All right, Donald.
24:13Time's for it.
24:13If you want to tell me when you see it and tell me what number it is.
24:17Last time me and Mike did this, we stood here for an hour.
24:20Just looking.
24:22But hopefully it's faster this time.
24:24Hopefully.
24:29Fun times.
24:34No yellow bags.
24:36As you see, it's going to be time consuming.
24:39Well, the thing is, though, it's exciting.
24:41So even though it takes a lot of time,
24:43you can always fall back on the pure, uh,
24:46the tension in the air.
24:48The, uh,
24:52the thrill of, uh,
24:56anticipation.
25:06Oh, look, a needle.
25:07Yeah.
25:09That big piece right there was, uh, the dial stuff.
25:12Oh, yeah?
25:13Yeah.
25:14Yeah.
25:17So how much of your day, by and large, is spent waiting to get a flash of yellow?
25:22Well, usually, uh, usually it comes out a little bit quicker than this.
25:27It's a little camera shy.
25:29Since it's a TV program, it's taking a little bit longer.
25:37All right, don't go anywhere.
25:38When we come back, we'll be here waiting for the yellow bag.
25:41Who knows what number it'll be?
25:42What do you guess?
25:43One or two.
25:44One or two.
25:45What do you guess?
25:45I'll have to say one, because that's the first one we put in.
25:48All right.
25:48Well, I'm going with four, because I'm an outsider.
25:50We'll be back.
25:51More dirty jobs.
25:52Stay with us.
25:54Okay, we're back.
25:55So far, nothing.
25:58It's been over an hour here.
25:59I don't know what the deal is.
26:01I just want to see one of them.
26:03Sometimes Miss Piggy just makes them disappear.
26:06Where are these bags, man?
26:09That's the question.
26:10There it is.
26:10Holy smokes.
26:13Okay, let's grab it.
26:14Let's see what number.
26:14What number is it?
26:16It's number seven.
26:18There's another one.
26:19There's another one, Mike.
26:20Here's number nine.
26:21Everything's backwards and crazy.
26:22There's another one.
26:23Yep.
26:24That's number six.
26:25We've just joined us.
26:25Things are really heating up on dirty jobs.
26:28The yellow bags are now coming fast and furious,
26:30except we haven't found any of the lower digits.
26:34We started right with six.
26:35What, seven, six, nine?
26:36Yep.
26:36Is that what we got?
26:37Three of them?
26:37Yep.
26:38All right.
26:38So, I don't know.
26:40You may want to, if you got your DVR hooked up,
26:43and you missed it, you might want to back it up.
26:46We can just show it to you again.
26:48Recapture that thrill when we saw that first bag.
26:50Here it is in slow motion.
26:54Do this fake snake.
26:57Okay, let's grab it.
26:58Ah, number two.
27:00Show me.
27:02Hey, there it is.
27:02There's eight.
27:03Oh, my God.
27:03Did you see that?
27:04I said, show me eight, and eight fell out.
27:07That's amazing.
27:07I tell you, man, I have to remember from time to time to use my powers for good.
27:12We got another one here, Mike.
27:13Snake's alive, number five.
27:14What?
27:14There's another one right there.
27:15Here's number ten.
27:17Oh.
27:17Okay, what's the number?
27:18That's a three.
27:19Okay, we're just looking for number one.
27:21Right there.
27:22You think?
27:22Oh, look at that.
27:23Good eyes, Mike.
27:24I do it for a living.
27:26That's all of them?
27:27That's it.
27:27Now, what's the next thing that we do, Mike?
27:28This concludes this portion.
27:30One of the most exciting dirty jobs ever.
27:34And they have to go in the incubator.
27:35So does it matter which order I open these?
27:38Nope.
27:39That goes in number eight.
27:40That's number eight.
27:41And eight goes in eight.
27:43You did about like that.
27:44Snapped them in there, right?
27:45Yep.
27:46Number four.
27:47How many of these do you do a day?
27:50Just every Monday.
27:51Once a week.
27:51Once a week.
27:52Oh, we just lucked into getting here on the exciting day.
27:56Number nine.
27:57Number nine.
27:58Lucky seven.
27:59What's in here?
28:02Vasilis Therogenis.
28:03Say that again?
28:05Vasilis Therogenesis.
28:06That's Italian or Latin.
28:08You going to get that tattooed on your arm one day?
28:10No.
28:11That's a heat-resistant bacteria.
28:14So they have a heat-resistant bacteria to test the machine to make sure that it...
28:20Generating enough heat?
28:21Cooks it good.
28:21Yep.
28:22Makes sure it cooks it good.
28:26All right.
28:27Number ten.
28:28All right.
28:30That's it.
28:31That's it?
28:31Yep.
28:32Now we have to wait 48 hours for the test.
28:36You want to just lounge around that dumpster again for the next couple days?
28:39No.
28:39Oh, that's why we had the other test done one month.
28:41That's good thinking.
28:42All right.
28:42What do we do now then?
28:44All right.
28:44So the temporary dumpster, which is this thing, has been moved back from the area where you
28:49saw it last.
28:50In its place is another giant green dumpster, which was brought back here by one of the
28:55drivers.
28:56That'll be hauled off a little bit later.
28:58But for now, Will is going to instruct me in the exact process by which this temporary dumpster
29:03can be relieved of its contents into the more or less permanent dumpster, which is also temporary
29:07by any definition, vis-a-vis a series of controls, knobs, levers, and, let's face it, good luck.
29:12That's right.
29:13What's the job?
29:13Okay.
29:14We got to dump this into the dumpster.
29:16And basically, I'll just show you how to do it like just you said.
29:19Okay.
29:20Okay.
29:21Yes.
29:23You just go up like this, give it a lot of throttle, you know, give it some throttle.
29:28Go up to right about this height.
29:36Yeah.
29:37Pull this back.
29:39Yeah.
29:39And that will tilt it forward and all the stuff will dump, and then just shake the dumpster.
29:46What?
29:47What's this do?
29:48This unhooks the latch so that the dumpster can roll on its axis and unload that stuff.
29:53Oh.
29:54Because it doesn't tilt forward enough, and then we'll just shake it with your feet.
29:57It'll be okay.
29:59All right.
29:59All right, I'll back up and you can do it.
30:01Yeah, do that.
30:03Coming up.
30:03Am I okay standing right here?
30:05I stand close where I can hear your screams.
30:07I take a bobcat to biohazard hell.
30:11I think it's going pretty well.
30:24Okay, good luck.
30:31Am I okay standing right here?
30:32Yeah, you know better than I do.
30:35I stand close where I can hear your screams.
30:42Okay, tilt it forward.
30:45Okay, go up higher.
30:49Higher.
30:51Okay, tilt it forward again.
30:54Okay, approach the dumpster.
30:55Get close to the dumpster.
30:59Okay, go higher.
31:06Okay, tilt it forward and pull this yellow strap.
31:13Now?
31:13Pull it.
31:15Okay, now tilt it forward.
31:18Lift it up, too, while you're tilting forward.
31:23Hold it, now tilt it forward.
31:25Okay, it's going to go forward on you.
31:28Holy crap.
31:33Okay, now you can let go of the strap.
31:38Let go, right?
31:39Not down?
31:40Well, it's pretty empty.
31:41Go ahead and release.
31:42We're going to go back.
31:43Go back.
31:48Boom, boom, boom!
31:54There was some more in there, man.
31:56Yeah.
31:57Okay.
31:59Just back up.
32:04Okay, tilt it forward all the way.
32:12I think it's going pretty well.
32:13Okay.
32:17Okay.
32:20Okay.
32:21Bring the throttle down and just bring the skid loader down, and it will call it good.
32:24I think it's going pretty good.
32:28That was close.
32:30Okay, back to skid loader, back a little further.
32:33Okay, that's good.
32:35Design flaw.
32:39That's okay.
32:39It's your first time.
32:40Yeah.
32:41Tragically, no, it's not.
32:44Sorry about that.
32:44We're just cleaning it up, right?
32:45That's okay.
32:45You know what?
32:46When that throttle's open, stuff happens fast.
32:49Yeah.
32:50That had a lot of medical waste on the ground there.
32:51So I'm sorry about that, Bob.
32:54It really just got a lot of power on it.
32:56When that throttle's open, they're very touching.
32:58This isn't the first time this has happened.
33:00Oh, good.
33:01I've seen this happen before.
33:02All right.
33:05Usually, it's, my boys are all real good at it.
33:08It's the non-relatives at it in this game.
33:11What's your last name?
33:12Vander Lindy.
33:14Ro.
33:15No relation.
33:18Way to get a look at this.
33:20Scott, right?
33:21Yes.
33:22And you're one of the official mechanics here, or are you like the main mechanic for this creature?
33:29Yeah.
33:30What are we looking at?
33:32No, we're looking at the main bearings that run the shredder.
33:37The shredder that I just saw that moves with that blinding speed up top.
33:41Okay.
33:42And how many bearings does that have?
33:44This has two right here.
33:47There's two, four, four more on the inside.
33:50And how often do the bearings need to be changed?
33:53It all depends on how fast the shafts wear.
33:57But they don't move fast?
33:59No.
33:59No.
33:59But they do break.
34:01No.
34:01They break.
34:02They warp.
34:04So you need to change one bearing today or two?
34:08Yeah, we'll just do one.
34:09All right.
34:09How long should this take?
34:10Could take anywhere from a half hour to two hours.
34:13Let's do it a half hour if we can.
34:14Okay.
34:15A bolt.
34:16We'll take that off.
34:19Can we turn it at this point with our hands?
34:21Yeah, we might be able to.
34:25All right.
34:26Yeah.
34:27We'll grab the cutting part.
34:28What am I cutting?
34:29Well, you're going to cut that bearing out.
34:31What about cutting this in half?
34:32No, you're cutting the bearing itself.
34:34You're going to cut right here, all the way down.
34:36You're just going to cut the metal around the bearing in a couple spots so we can try to get
34:39that piece out so we can get the rest of the bearing out.
34:42Good grief.
34:42It's not a fun job.
34:44You get hot.
34:45Sure it is.
34:46You got a stool or something?
34:47You ever sit when you do this or you're just all hunched over?
34:49I can get you a chair, though.
34:50That'd be nice, man.
34:51I'd like a chair.
34:51I got a feeling I'm going to be here a while.
34:53Okay.
34:54I'd like to get comfortable.
34:57Coming up.
34:57Ah!
34:58Oh, a lot of pain, a lot of pain, a lot of pain, a lot of pain.
35:01Removing shredder bearings is great exercise.
35:03Get out!
35:04You really feel the burn.
35:06I just burned my...
35:14Oh, that's beautiful.
35:16Ah!
35:17Oh, yeah.
35:20Well, that went to your head.
35:21Perfect.
35:22Just in time for a hot.
35:23Great timing.
35:27No, I got to say, that's very painful.
35:30Yeah, it's hot, yeah.
35:31Why am I wearing this?
35:34This?
35:36I don't know, because we don't have no leathers.
35:40I cut that way all the time.
35:41I cut that way all the time.
35:46Ow!
35:51I just burned my...
35:55You're the one that wanted the chair.
36:01Damn it.
36:03You're burning right up there.
36:05Oh, my God.
36:06I believe I was just molested.
36:10By something that you shouldn't have been.
36:15Come on.
36:17Come on, you're off.
36:22Woo, that hurts.
36:24Oh, a lot of pain, a lot of pain, a lot of pain, a lot of pain.
36:27Yeah.
36:27Ow.
36:28Ow.
36:30I'm going to be here a while, anyway.
36:32Ow.
36:34Ow.
36:37Ow.
36:39Ow.
36:41Ow.
36:44Ow.
36:46Ow.
36:46Ow.
36:48Ow.
36:49Ow.
36:53Ow.
37:13That's insane, dude.
37:13Come on, man.
37:14We have no leathers.
37:15What is it?
37:16Leathers.
37:17Let's see if you look.
37:18You haven't cut none of the steel that we need cut.
37:21Oh, I didn't?
37:22Oh, I had the impression a great deal of things were happening.
37:26They sure look good.
37:28I can show you how thick one of the bearings are.
37:30Yeah, why don't you do this?
37:31So we're cutting through from there.
37:32Yeah, you're cutting through this one, and you've got to cut all the way across all three
37:36pieces of steel, and then you've got to do it twice.
37:41I heard there was a shortage of professional welders.
37:43Yes, sir.
37:44I believe I know why.
37:51Come on.
37:55Come on.
37:55Oh, come on.
37:56Ah!
37:58Nice!
37:59Get out of here.
37:59Fork!
38:00Ow!
38:00Frick!
38:02I'll tell you what.
38:03Let me watch you do.
38:04Okay.
38:04Do one.
38:05All right.
38:05I'm just going to watch you.
38:06All right.
38:14You comfortable, Bob?
38:16Can I get you anything?
38:17I've got some beers in the refrigerator.
38:20We won't be alone.
38:32It's not working.
38:38Miss Piggy.
38:40Miss Piggy's kicking our butt, fellas.
38:43Yeah.
38:43Kicking it.
38:44One hour.
38:47We're halfway there.
38:48Yeah.
38:49Like I said, I never cut one hour.
38:50One of these aparts.
38:51I have no idea.
38:52First bearing.
38:53Wait a minute.
38:54You just said you never did this before?
38:56Not with these new bearings, no.
38:58Oh.
38:59Well, that adds a whole new dimension of wonder to the...
39:02Oh, yeah.
39:03How it might turn out.
39:04You're just as new to this as I am.
39:07Soul deadening.
39:21You're gravy.
39:23Yeah, right?
39:24Maybe we just need a bigger hammer.
39:26A bigger hammer?
39:28Yeah, maybe.
39:29I'd like to see you swing a big...
39:30Yeah.
39:32Is that the biggest one you got?
39:33Yeah.
39:33That's pretty big.
39:34Go ahead, man.
39:44That's how you do it, boys.
39:45No kidding.
39:50She's out of there.
39:51Mom, did you just get that out?
39:53Just take a crowbar and pop that out of there.
39:56Crowbar.
39:57Pop it out.
39:58Right up there.
40:00Like that?
40:01Good.
40:01Just need to beat your hammer.
40:02No!
40:03I said it!
40:04I said it!
40:05I said it!
40:05I said it!
40:05Hey!
40:08Well, you did it.
40:11Yeah.
40:11You did it.
40:12You left me the glory.
40:13Yeah, well.
40:14Well, thank you.
40:15Put the new bearing in.
40:16That would be good to go.
40:20It's all easy now.
40:24Let's give him a round of applause.
40:27Please.
40:27Please.
40:28Keep your seats, everyone.
40:30Very kind.
40:34I'll tell you what it is.
40:35That is where you can get it.
40:37Are you ready over there?
40:39Yeah.
40:40And it works.
40:41This show's been over for a long time,
40:43but this is probably as good as image to leave you as any.
40:46Jammin' Miss Piggy full of grease.
40:50Dirty job.
40:51Medical waste.
40:52Making it all go away in South Dakota.
40:55I won't be back for a while.
40:58Thanks, fellas.
41:00I'd like to say it was fun, but...
41:02Oh, it was fun.
41:03It's been fun.
41:03You don't want to shake.
41:05You already got your hands dirty enough today.
41:08Thanks, Mike.
41:09Where's Will?
41:10Thanks, Will.
41:11Did I?
41:11Yeah, Miss Piggy kicked me square in the face with her nasty little cloven hoof.
41:16I'm out.
41:16Okay, cool.
41:17See you next time.
41:18All right, have a good day.
41:19I'm taking the lube with me.
41:20Wow.
41:21It's gonna be a long ride home.
41:27I have some bad news.
41:31We've been asking for our dirty jobs ideas for a long time.
41:35You know we have.
41:37And we got them for a while, but now we're not getting them anymore.
41:41We went to discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs.
41:44I didn't see anything.
41:45I'm worried sick.
41:47If you could just go there and suggest an idea for our next dirty jobs.
42:00I'd be great.
42:03I'll get it.
42:05You can just leave them all stacked three high.
42:08Oh.
42:09And just.
42:12It would have made better sense just to pull that out from under the right, because this
42:14is pointless, self-defeating.
42:19I'll get it right next time.
42:25Yeah?
42:26Uh-oh.
42:30To keep the disease in here, where it belongs.
