00:00Activist and founder of Women's Warriors, Vicky Rampasad, who was instrumental in helping
00:06bring attention to the reported kidnapping and abuse of Sabita Basleo, tells us,
00:11Situations like these are occurring far too often and should serve as a wake-up call for
00:16citizens to look out for one another and speak up when vulnerable persons are at risk.
00:22She believes the suspects have been doing this to other victims for 16 years.
00:27There are so many things that are happening under our noses and we are not, we do not
00:35know, we don't think that it is happening. And this is a wake-up call for the country to
00:43not put anything past them. And this, I am constantly conscious of my surroundings, who
00:52are, who I am around. I am always observant because sometimes people, they would speak
00:59to us and we haven't a clue. They are in trouble.
01:03She adds that in many cases, reports are made to the police, yet the cries for help too often
01:11fall on deaf ears.
01:12There are countless, I have hundreds of messages, hundreds of individuals who have been victims
01:20of this individual, who constantly went for the past 16 years that I know who I myself had
01:30interactions with the individual. I had problems and I myself visited the police station and they did
01:39nothing. They did absolutely nothing.
01:43Describing the situation as unacceptable, Rampassad is urging the commissioner of police to ensure officers
01:50respond decisively and treat reports of elder abuse with the urgency and seriousness they deserve.
01:57And I am desperately calling on the commissioner of police. And I said to him, sir, we are ready to
02:06work with
02:06the TTPS of Trinidad and Tobago. We can do something, we can change it. But how can we do so
02:13if when we go to
02:14the authorities, there is absolutely no person who is willing to do anything for us because they are affiliated or
02:22something is taking place with specific accused suspects. It's absolutely wrong. Everyone needs to be treated fairly.
