01:21Tell me about that
01:24Chestnut Hollow
01:26Is the ghetto of the ghetto where I'm from
01:29Mmm, mmm, mmm
01:32That must have been interesting
01:35Yeah, it was because
01:38A lot of what we did in Chestnut Hollow
01:40Was primitive
01:41While so-called uptown
01:44Colored folks
01:45Had all of the modern conveniences
01:49For instance, they had oil heat
01:51We still had coal heat
01:53So if the fire went out
01:55You had to get up
01:56Very early
01:57Go out and chop wood
01:59And get old newspapers
02:01Oh, wow
02:02And then put what they called Picole on top of that
02:04And restart the coal furnace
02:07Oh, wow
02:08I've seen those
02:09I don't
02:10Made in a steel tub
02:12That the water was heated on the stove
02:16And we were the last section of town
02:18To get rid of outhouses

02:24You had to go outside to use a bathroom

03:19My uncle always made music
03:21So it would be

03:31Yeah, that's my mother's oldest brother

03:39The most significant piece of music

03:47The whole family dynamic

03:55But when I was first born

03:59My mother was 14

04:06I got a stepfather
04:08And when he had a son
04:11I was kind of like
04:12He had no use for me

04:16There was a very kindly couple
04:18Across the street
04:20William and Mary and Jennifer
04:23And I used to go over there
04:24And have cupcakes
04:26And treats
04:27And
04:28You know
04:29A child instinctively
04:30Knows when they're liked
04:32And wanted
04:32Yeah
04:33And so
04:36Every day
04:37That was kind of my routine
04:38Hmm
04:39And then one night
04:41My mother came to get me
04:42Because it was dark
04:44And there was a discussion
04:47In the living room
04:48And I come from that generation
04:50Where children could not be
04:52In the same room
04:53With adults talking
04:55Yeah
04:55But after that night
04:58It would be 12 years
05:00Before I would reunite
05:01With my birth family again
05:04Wow

05:07What was that like for you?
05:10It was good for me
05:11Because
05:13From a family with four children
05:16I went to being an only child
05:18Mm
05:19And got put in
05:21Catholic private school
05:23Baptized Catholic
05:26Everything was fine
05:28But my
05:28Siblings were experiencing
05:31Homelessness
05:32Hunger
05:35Mm
05:36It was difficult for me
05:38When
05:39I went back home
05:41To my birth family
05:42Because most of my experience
05:45Had been as an only child
05:46Mm-hmm
05:48Yeah
05:49Wow
05:50So
05:53You turn some really tough moments
05:55Into full athletic scholarships
05:56And you have three graduate degrees
05:59Yes

06:01Some people would say
06:02Oh, you know
06:03They would dwell
06:03Or they would
06:04They would indulge themselves
06:06In their past
06:07In their complexities
06:08In their
06:09In their
06:10You know
06:11In their troubles
06:12From the past
06:14And bring it into the future
06:15How did you
06:16Not do that
06:17For yourself?
06:19Well
06:22I was a pretty regular guy
06:25Especially when I got put out of Catholic school
06:28Went to public school
06:30Mm-hmm
06:31I had to defend myself
06:34I also did not have a social life
06:37At the private Catholic school
06:39Because I was the only black student there
06:43And you know
06:44Back in the 60s
06:46You wouldn't call a white girl
06:48On the phone
06:49If you went to the dance
06:51You didn't dance
06:51With a white girl
06:53You didn't even call them
06:55To get homework information
06:56Mm-hmm
06:57So when I arrived
06:59At public school
07:00I was naive
07:02Since I hadn't done
07:04Any of the typical social things
07:06That young black teenagers do
07:09In junior high
07:11So it actually
07:12Took me a second
07:14To catch up
07:15But when I caught up
07:19That's all that I did
07:20You know
07:21Academics
07:21Went completely out the window
07:25Hmm
07:25Wow
07:26And I was a pretty academic guy
07:28Before I got there
07:29Yeah
07:31Wow
07:33That seems like
07:34It kind of
07:35It seems sad a little bit
07:37But then again
07:38It seemed good in a way
07:40Were you perplexed at any moment?
07:44No
07:44I had wanted to go there all my life
07:46Mm-hmm
07:47But my adopted father
07:49Did not believe
07:50In public schools
07:52For young black children
07:53Mm-hmm
07:55He didn't think they taught you anything
07:58So he always made it mandatory
08:00That I'd be in
08:01Private Catholic school
08:03Mm-hmm
08:04So it was great for me
08:06And it
08:07Released all my adolescence
08:12Development
08:15First day I got there
08:16My cousin said
08:19Because I had on
08:21Saddle shoes and argyle socks
08:24Vest
08:25Sport jacket
08:26Briefcase
08:28Bow tie
08:30He says
08:31Look
08:31Lose the bow tie
08:32And the briefcase
08:33And get with these honeys
08:35Oh goodness
08:37They're all sweating you
08:38Oh wow
08:40Because when they were coming up to me
08:42They were like

08:48I just didn't have it

08:51The tragedy of all this though

08:54If it hadn't been for the death of my adopted mother
08:57Yeah
08:58I would have stayed in private Catholic school

09:02Because I had the warm breakfast
09:04I had the starch clothes
09:05And I had the happy life
09:07But
09:09When she died at the end of freshman year
09:12My adopted father went into the tank
09:15And
09:16Moved the whore into the house
09:18And she was touching
09:19All of my adopted mother's things
09:22And
09:24Drinking 24 hours around the clock
09:26And gambling
09:27And
09:28So I wasn't getting any rest
09:31So I was coming to school sleeping
09:33I wasn't prepared
09:35You know
09:36My starch shirt wasn't right
09:38All of those things
09:39Mm-hmm
09:40Which led to me being dismissed
09:44Wow
09:45And
09:46Once I was dismissed
09:48I went over to public school
09:49And then everything over there
09:52Was so good and plenty
09:54That I didn't open a book
09:56So
09:56I ended up not graduating
09:59With my class

10:04Now what was sad about that
10:05Was that
10:07My adopted father
10:08Even when he was drunk
10:10Would always
10:12Say
10:14I wanted to live
10:15Until you graduate
10:18And he died

10:23When I didn't graduate

10:26And that was the thing
10:28That turned me around

10:33I moved to a different state
10:36Finished high school

10:39All state basketball
10:42But I still didn't have
10:44The
10:45Overall grades
10:47To get into college
10:48So I went to a junior college
10:51Hartnell College
10:52In Salinas
10:54And I started there
10:57Sleeping on the floor
10:59In other people's rooms
11:00Mm-hmm
11:01Scrounging for every meal
11:04Spent a day as a migrant worker
11:07Washed a lot of dishes
11:09Did a lot of mopping
11:11Mm-hmm
11:13But
11:14The way I used to study
11:16Is I'd wait for other people
11:17To go to sleep
11:18And then I'd get their books
11:22Wow
11:22But as fortune would have it
11:26Because Mr. Jennifer
11:27Had the foresight
11:28To adopt me
11:31I was able to get
11:32His social security benefits
11:34Mm-hmm
11:35And once I verified
11:36My enrollment
11:39I got that big check
11:41At the beginning
11:42Of the year
11:42Yeah
11:43Because I hadn't been
11:44Getting any money
11:45For three months
11:46Mm-hmm
11:46So I was able to get a room
11:49And then from there
11:50The problem was
11:51How was I going to eat?
11:53The basketball coach
11:54Who had promised me
11:56That he'd take care
11:57Of all this
11:58He went to Arizona
12:01And he wanted me
12:02To go to Arizona
12:04But I couldn't go to Arizona
12:05After I promised
12:06All my friends
12:07I was going to be
12:08In California
12:11Wow
12:11And so I stayed
12:12In California
12:13Until a new coach came
12:14And so basically
12:16I had to feed
12:17And house myself
12:19From September
12:21To about mid-October
12:22When basketball started
12:24Oh my gosh
12:25And things turned around
12:26Mm-hmm
12:27I got what they call
12:29A no-show job
12:30In the athletic department
12:32Just go pick up
12:34A check once a month
12:40Got a job
12:41Most fortunately
12:43At the post office
12:44Mm-hmm
12:45As what they call
12:46A YOP
12:46Youth Opportunity Program
12:49Uh-huh
12:50That paid a significant
12:51Amount of money
12:53Wow
12:55And then I had a work
12:56Study job
12:58That I also
12:58Didn't have to go to
13:00And so I was able
13:02To get my books
13:03Have a place to sleep
13:06Place to eat
13:07They got a meal ticket
13:09For me at the smorgage board
13:11And so I ate like
13:13The last piglet
13:14In the bunch
13:14Oh goodness
13:17And uh
13:18Was able to get
13:20A 2.4 GPA
13:22Which was kind of amazing
13:24And then transferred to
13:28Yeah
13:29Millersville University
13:30Back home in Pennsylvania
13:32On an athletic scholarship
13:34Mm-hmm
13:35I did basketball
13:37And track and field
13:40But I really didn't pay
13:42That much attention to that
13:44Because once I got there
13:47I was on the books
13:49And then I had an English class
13:52And in walks this young white professor
13:54And obviously he's a redneck
13:58He has on the cowboy boots
14:00With the metal protectors
14:02On the front and the back
14:04These ratty jeans
14:05Oh my gosh
14:07And a white t-shirt
14:09With his cigarettes rolled up
14:12In the sleeve
14:14Oh gosh
14:15But anyway
14:16It was a writing class
14:18And I had written some things
14:20Here and there
14:21Like little blurbs
14:23And things like that
14:24I was
14:25When I went to New Jersey
14:27I was in a creative writing club
14:29But I never actually wrote anything
14:33But anyway
14:33I wrote my assignment
14:36And he called me in
14:39So I was sitting there
14:40In his office
14:42And he tells me this joke
14:45But the problem is
14:46Because the punchline was
14:49And I was like
14:50I don't know who you think
14:51You're talking to
14:52I don't play that
14:55And he was like
14:56Oh you listen
14:57I said
14:58Oh yeah
14:58You don't talk to me like that
15:01And he said
15:01Oh well I'm sorry
15:02I'm sorry
15:04Let me tell you
15:05Why I called you over here
15:07And I said

15:53Most of the jobs I had

15:55You worked a lot of hours

15:57And then he said
15:59I work 12 hours a week

16:07All these books behind me
16:11I said to him

16:27And then he started

16:52Where I went for my master's
16:54They have their own style manual
16:57So I also know

17:02And then when I got to
17:04University of Chicago
17:07I used to have
17:08Athletic practice
17:09Year round
17:14Unofficially
17:14As a basketball player
17:16You run cross country
17:18In the fall
17:19Then you actually have
17:21Basketball season
17:22October to March
17:24And then I'd go straight
17:25To track season
17:28But when I was in graduate school
17:30There were no more athletics
17:33So I ended up
17:36Sitting in my studio apartment
17:39Where my bed was
17:40My living room wall
17:42Wow
17:43And
17:45It's pretty boring
17:47And so I said
17:49I'm going to go over
17:50To the school newspaper
17:52And see if I can write
17:54A couple articles
17:55Nice
17:56And so I went over
17:59And I met the editor
18:00And I was happy
18:02That he was an undergraduate
18:03And I was a graduate student
18:06Because he said
18:07Well have you ever
18:08Worked for the newspaper before
18:10And I said
18:12Sure
18:12Undergrads
18:13You know
18:13I was lying
18:17But he
18:20Gave me an assignment
18:22And I started writing
18:24And it was
18:26I think
18:28Three albums
18:30It was 33 and a third
18:34About African American life
18:37And so once again
18:38Dr. Ducker in my ear
18:41Go to the library
18:42And see
18:44Some record reviews
18:46Which I did
18:47And then I kind of
18:48Wrote my own
18:49Took them back to him
18:52Next thing I know
18:53I was in print
18:55Nice

18:59All of these opportunities
19:01Come because of hard work
19:03I mean you never really gave up
19:05No
19:06The other thing
19:07That happened was
19:09You know
19:10When you're an athlete
19:11You're pretty conceited
19:12Yeah
19:13All the flow
19:15Comes to you
19:17But when I left that
19:20Kind of rural college
19:22And went to this urban college
19:25People don't know who you are
19:27They don't care
19:28What you did athletically
19:30Particularly
19:31University of Chicago
19:33And an athletic conversation
19:36Was all that I had
19:37And it was actually
19:40Pushing people away
19:42Yeah
19:43But once I
19:45Got published
19:47People were coming up to me
19:49I didn't like what you wrote
19:53I liked what you wrote
19:56So negative and positive
19:59I now had the flow
20:02You know
20:03People were looking for me
20:05Even the negative people
20:07Were like

20:16These people were smart

20:19I certainly listened

20:32It was my first interaction
20:36With black upper class
20:39Middle people
20:41At my
20:43Undergraduate school
20:45Once again
20:48Myself and my teammates
20:50We were the only
20:51Black guys on campus
20:52When I got there
20:53In 1968
20:56And then
20:57Since we were athletes
20:59You don't kind of
21:00Live a normal life
21:02Where you learn
21:03How to socialize
21:04With people
21:05And things like that
21:07Because a lot of things
21:08Are given to you
21:09Yeah
21:11So
21:11I'm thinking
21:15Authentic black
21:16Is only someone
21:18Like me
21:19But when I got to
21:21Chicago
21:21I learned that
21:25African Americans
21:26Are a poly class society
21:29Which means many classes
21:31Yeah
21:33And some of these people
21:35You couldn't just
21:36Get on up on them
21:40Not in Chicago
21:42No
21:42You know
21:43They had to
21:45See what your credentials
21:47Were
21:47Etc

21:50The writing

24:21Master's degree there
24:22In one year
24:23I did my French study
24:25At Northwestern

24:28And started teaching
