00:00That was a rough one.
00:02And honestly, man, if you watch baseball like many of you have your whole lives,
00:08there's going to be a stretch.
00:10I think almost any, really, every team can go through and expect
00:13there is going to be a stretch where you just play poorly for 72 hours,
00:19where you get swept.
00:20You may get swept three games.
00:22You may lose four out of five or something.
00:25There's just going to be, when you play 162 games,
00:29you're going to have a bad stretch of baseball, and it happens.
00:35Now, the question and the conversation I want to kick things off with,
00:39and those of you on the base power text line, 713-572-4610, jump in.
00:44Those of you on YouTube and Twitch, jump in.
00:48Was this just the typical bad 72 hours that you see in baseball?
00:55I bet you we could look at the championship teams
00:58or that 19 team that should have won a championship for the Astros.
01:04I bet you we can look through there, and there's probably a poor 72-hour stretch.
01:08There's probably stretches where they've lost three in a row in those seasons.
01:13Was it just one of those, or was this more not just a bad 72 hours?
01:20This was a bad sign.
01:23This was something that we're probably going to see as an issue throughout the year.
01:30Was this a bad 72 hours in Colorado, or was it a bad sign?
01:33713-572-416, give me your thoughts.
01:36YouTube and Twitch as well, give me your thoughts.
01:38Clint, was this a bad sign, or just a bad 72 hours that happens every year in a baseball season?
01:43Well, look, I think it's a bad sign because I don't know, and it's not about the starting pitching.
01:49I know Christian Javier stunk it up, obviously, and is hurt, and I know Hunter Brown missed his first start.
01:55It's not even about the starting pitching for me.
01:57The bad sign, to me, is more about the bullpen.
02:02And I know they've been taxed with the way that the starting pitching has gone a couple of times this
02:06year,
02:06but the bullpen is the one to me that I have zero confidence in, and I don't think they have
02:10any confidence in.
02:13There's been opportunities for guys to come in and be nails in situations
02:18and really earn more run and earn a spot in that bullpen,
02:22and I don't think the guys they've trotted out there have taken the bulls by the horn, if you will,
02:30nor do I think that they have the confidence to handle what's going on.
02:37They don't even know if they belong yet.
02:39And so the bullpen is the piece that worries me in a sense of was it just a bad 72
02:46or was it a bad sign?
02:47I think that bullpen is going to be a struggle for a bit, maybe the whole season.
02:54Text line, it's both.
02:56Text line coming through.
02:58Well, that wasn't.
02:58That's not it.
02:59He gave you two choices, not three.
03:01He didn't give you all of the above.
03:02He gave you the third.
03:03Yeah, I didn't.
03:06Also from the text line, there's still just one game under .500.
03:11It's still early to tell if it's a bad sign.
03:17I don't think it's too early to look at this and say that.
03:21Now, this doesn't mean that their season's over or that nothing can change,
03:26but they're currently 6-7 as the text in.
03:31They're a game and a half behind the Rangers right now.
03:34And even the Mariners, they're 4-9 who they're about to take on, Clint.
03:37So I think from that perspective, nobody is running away.
03:41The AL West, to me, is probably going to be tight.
03:43I don't think they've got to deal with a team like the Dodgers or something
03:47that's getting out.
03:49And you look up in a couple of weeks, you may be five, six games out.
03:55But the injuries are a real thing, Clint.
03:57Hunter Brown, there's no real timetable.
04:00We'll see how long it takes Hayter to get back,
04:02but I don't think Hayter's back in a couple of weeks.
04:05Another piece in that bullpen, Bennett Sousa, is on the 15-day AL.
04:09We'll see what he gets back.
04:10I think Zach Cole and DeCenzo were thought to be a part of this.
04:14They have been out from the start.
04:15I guess we'll see.
04:17Have you seen anything yet, Tyler, on Jake Myers or on Christian Javier?
04:22I've not seen anything out.
04:24I'm just assuming that's something we may hear about in the next day or so
04:29when it looks like they've reported that J.P. France
04:34and Taylor Trammell are going to be added to the roster
04:38and make the trip to Seattle.
04:40So they've got injuries.
04:42Hell, the kid Cody Bolton, who's day-to-day with the back.
04:44They've got injuries.
04:45And I think not just injuries, but Hayter and Brown, those are big ones.
04:49Jake Myers, their center fielder, that's bigger than you would want.
04:53And, I mean, honestly, we've got to just speak about it right now.
04:55They currently have the worst pitching staff in the American League right now.
04:59Only the Nationals have a worse ERA.
05:03That's the thing for me.
05:04As you said the bullpen, I think the pitching as a whole, Clint.
05:06And that one's hard for me with the injuries and everything to say,
05:11that's going to be something you just flip around.
05:14I could see the pitching be an issue most of the season.
05:17Yeah, I mean, I guess I leaned into Dana Brown talking about the bullpen.
05:21Like, Dana Brown, I heard him ask several times about the pitching staff,
05:24and he's really excited about the bullpen.
05:26The bullpen, the bullpen is that.
05:27This is another.
05:29And so I knew, obviously, injuries are out of your control,
05:34and I knew that there was going to be some question marks for the start and rotation.
05:38But I had my hopes up, maybe ignorantly, I had my hopes up about the bullpen.
05:43And, look, they've dropped five of six to the A's and the Rockies.
05:47And in those games, three of the six losses have been out of hand early.
05:52Right?
05:53Out of hand early.
05:53The inability to stop the bleeding.
05:55We've seen Munoz have an opportunity, who got optioned, I believe.
06:00We've seen the wheels come off of Weiss.
06:03We've seen the wheels come completely off of Blue Ball.
06:06We've seen multiple times we've seen Abreu struggle.
06:11Somebody else.
06:12Somebody else the wheels came off before Abreu.
06:14Who was that that was in there fighting it?
06:16Roa.
06:17Yes, that's it.
06:17You're right.
06:18I mean, so it's like the inability.
06:21I knew that we were going to bleed in that start and rotation.
06:24I didn't know which one it was, but there is no way we were living well enough for McCullers, Christian
06:29Javier to come to return in tip-top shape,
06:32and then also Burroughs and MI to be nails the way they were in spring training.
06:37There was no way it was going to.
06:38There was going to be injuries.
06:40There was going to be issues with start and rotation.
06:41But the inability to stop the bleeding once it starts by the bullpen is, to me, is what – I
06:48just don't know how it gets better.
06:49The start and rotation can get better, as I've mentioned multiple times.
06:53Spencer Aregetti is just simply better than Christian Javier, which doesn't – he didn't set the bar real high, right?
06:59If Hunter Brown gets back from injury at some point in time and is better.
07:03So, I mean, the start and rotation, I think, can get better.
07:07You get Hader back, the closer role gets better.
07:09That middle of the pack, like, the guys that you've got to depend on are guys that have – they
07:14ran out there.
07:15And literally in a five-game – in a six-game stretch where you've lost five of them,
07:20we've seen the wheels come off of four or five guys.
07:23So, yeah, I mean, it's – there's reason to be concerned about the whole staff.
07:27I agree.
07:27But if you want me to pinpoint one that I think is more of a bad sign than just a
07:32bad run of luck,
07:33I think it's – I think it's that bullpen.
07:36Yeah, that's why I said the pitching, all of it coming together because the injuries,
07:39that's a tough thing where it hits all at once.
07:43Someone text in, the Sacramento A's are coming.
07:46Watch out.
07:46Let's go, Oakland.
07:47The A's are a good young team.
07:50Let's go, Oakland.
07:50So, I said, let's go, Oakland.
07:51Not Vegas, not Sacramento, but Oakland.
07:53Text line coming in, Clinton Tyler, show you remember in 2022 when they won the World Series,
08:01they would lose against sorry teams.
08:03I do remember that.
08:05But I just – I think it's – for me, it's a difference.
08:08When I look up – they would lose the sorry teams,
08:12but Fran Brevaldez also was there and threw 201 innings
08:15and was a finished fifth in the Cy Young.
08:19They also had Justin Verlander, who threw 175 innings and won the Cy Young.
08:26Right.
08:26Like, that was their one-two punch.
08:29And then coming behind them, I mean, you don't think of it, but Jose Urquidy gave you 164 innings.
08:35Luis Garcia gave you 157.
08:37I mean, Javier was good Javier, and he was your fourth or fifth – your fifth or sixth starter.
08:44Jaco – I know you don't like him, Tyler, but Jaco DiRizzi was there.
08:47And then you start talking about a bullpen.
08:49And this was that year that, you know, Montero did what he did to make the Astros believe we need
08:56to sign him to a long-term deal
08:57and give him money.
08:58Ryan Preston was there.
09:00Like, it was just a – this was a different group.
09:02And I'm just talking about the pitching, not – let alone, like, the bats when you've got Kyle Tucker
09:08and Michael Brantley and Alex Bregman and that crew involved in this.
09:13So, this was a different – this was a different group of guys where you feel like you know a
09:20little bit more
09:20where, hey, you lose to some bad teams, you feel all right when you still know, all right, man,
09:26we've got Verlander and Framberg coming up in the next couple of starts.
09:32And we feel good about our bullpen, and we've got several guys that can run.
09:36That's just a different group.
