Seth and Sean dive into Aaron Wilson's Texans nuggets as outlined by TexansJacob and discuss Christen Miller as being a big culture guy on the level of Will Anderson Jr.
Transcript
00:00Texans, Jacob, Seth, we, we, um, we talked earlier in the show, uh, ESPN touted their
00:07draft Intel that they had on all 32 teams and ultimately Jordan Reed, who is their national,
00:13one of their national draft guys didn't really have anything specific with the Texans other
00:18than, Hey, circle the names, Maxie on a chore.
00:21And, uh, who was the other one?
00:23Uh, Oh, uh, the Rutledge kid out of Georgia.
00:25Yeah.
00:25Kay and Rutledge circle those names.
00:27Okay.
00:28Um, didn't say why, but just said circle those names.
00:31And, and it was pretty clear from both that and DJ Bien-Aimé who, you know, he's, you know,
00:36DJ wasn't the one providing the Intel.
00:38He was sort of the one setting the table for the Intel by saying, Hey, here's what the Texans
00:42needs are right now.
00:43It was very offensive line heavy.
00:46Uh, Aaron Wilson, this is courtesy of Texans, Jacob, who kind of pulled some of these bullet
00:51points together.
00:52I'm assuming from maybe a live stream that Aaron did recently.
00:55He likes to do live streams where he takes questions from the audience.
00:58No, no.
00:58Yeah.
00:58Yeah.
00:59That's what, uh, yeah.
01:00That's what Texans Jacob does.
01:01Yeah.
01:01He takes, cause Aaron does these live Aaron.
01:04A lot of times we'll have kind of like some pretty juicy nuggets that he just buries in
01:07the middle of a live stream.
01:09Yeah.
01:09Uh, so, so it's worth watching, but if you don't have time to watch the whole thing, you
01:13can, you can find out the highlights from Texans, Jacob.
01:16Here are the bullet points that Texans, Jacob, uh, pulled together for us here.
01:21According to Aaron Wilson, Houston is sending position coaches to work out certain players
01:26privately, including a quote, very interesting one next week that he couldn't say who it
01:33was.
01:34So a little bit of mystery, Seth, a very interesting player.
01:39The Texans are sending their position coaches to go work out.
01:42What would qualify as a very interesting position for the Texans to go work out?
01:51Like, I, I don't know who a specific player would be like it.
01:54I would like, I'd be shocked if they went to go work out a quarterback, right?
01:57I guess, you know what it might be the, no, the interesting one would be as if it's somebody
02:00that's projected to go in the top 15.
02:03Okay.
02:03That's where I think that's where it gets real.
02:05If it's Kenyon Sadiq, for instance, that would be really interesting.
02:09Yes.
02:10Like any of these other guys, it just makes sense.
02:12Okay.
02:12Maybe they didn't get a good look at him at the combine or whatever they go.
02:15If they start looking at some of the guys that are projected to go top 15, that's when
02:19things get juicy.
02:20Okay.
02:20That's a good one.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Yeah.
02:22That's a really, that is, in fact, that feels like what it would be.
02:26Like if I had to, if I had a power rank, like, is it a, is it a specific position?
02:30We're not expecting them to draft.
02:31Is it Fernando Mendoza?
02:33Is it okay?
02:34That would be a shock.
02:35That would definitely be a shock.
02:37No, I would say the things that would make it interesting to me would be, yes.
02:40What you just said.
02:41Is it a player who's not even in the range where the Texans could expect to get at 28?
02:46That would be one.
02:47If it were a position, like I would be surprised to see them going to Indiana to work out Omar
02:52Cooper,
02:53let's say, like a wide receiver, like that's a position I don't expect them to draft in
02:58the first round.
02:58Yeah.
02:59I would, if it were a play, what if it were a player who actually had like some sort of
03:03checkered past or something like that?
03:05Like who had some non-Texan things on the board.
03:08As we've discussed, there are annoyingly few checkered pasts in this year's draft.
03:12Yeah, it's true.
03:13These kids are so damn well behaved these days.
03:15They got 13 days to get into trouble.
03:17Do something.
03:18Could somebody go out there and mix it up a little bit?
03:21Do something.
03:21Yeah.
03:21Fist fight or something.
03:22At the very late.
03:23You know what?
03:23Now we're at an age where these kids have been smart about, or at least smarter about social
03:28media.
03:28So you're not even going to get like a Josh Allen type scenario where all of a sudden you
03:32get an old, uh, an old tweet from 10 years ago pops up or something.
03:36Their agents have all gone through and scrubbed clean their social media history.
03:41Yeah.
03:41Yeah.
03:42Yeah.
03:42Thanks for having me.
03:43I'm saying that sarcastically.
03:44I'm glad that kids these days seem to be basically castrated little half men.
03:48Yeah, I guess.
03:49It's not great for content, but whatever.
03:51We're castrated half men.
03:54Sonny Stiles, the linebacker would be interesting, I guess.
03:57Yeah.
03:57That would be a guy that's way up higher than what you'd expect for the Texans.
04:01Well, the most interesting one for me would be if all of a sudden they're working out
04:03Jeremiah Love.
04:04Like, they're going to package, you know, a first and a second, they're going to make
04:08a Will Anderson type trade to move up and get Jeremiah Love.
04:11You know, that is the one thing.
04:13Okay.
04:13I'm glad you said that.
04:14Jeremiah Love is the one that it's not out of the realm of possibilities that just because
04:21it's the running back position.
04:22And usually there's only a few teams at any given time that feel like it's worth taking
04:27a running back in the first round because of the chance of injury and all of that.
04:32That, yeah, I, you know, there's, it would be a huge surprise if he fell in the draft.
04:38And yet I could, that's, that is the type of scenario that's possible.
04:41Just because if teams, if teams decide, yeah, I would like, we're not set up to take advantage
04:45of him right now, or we're just worried he's going to get injured.
04:48And then we've wasted this pick when we could have used it on an offensive lineman or something.
04:51And nobody, I couldn't even find any, I couldn't find any negative quotes about him as a, from
04:57our anonymous scouts.
04:58Yeah.
04:58We'll get to those guys later.
05:00The most I got out of him was that they liked Jonathan Taylor better as a prospect.
05:04Like that's about as, that's about as negative as it got with Jeremiah Love.
05:08Yeah.
05:08Yeah.
05:08All the negatives were, uh, I don't know, man, drafting a running back in the first round,
05:13this, that, the other.
05:14No, he's in a vacuum.
05:15He's the perfect football player.
05:16He just plays a position that's not prioritized by some team that, and that, it's like being
05:21the best chimney sweep in modern times.
05:26You're on fire today, man.
05:29I'm the best custom glove maker.
05:32All the finest ladies and gentlemen are coming to my shop for my gloves.
05:36I had three customers last year.
05:42Oh my God.
05:44My clients have nothing but the most alabaster of skin because they never take my gloves
05:49off.
05:50Okay.
05:50Next nugget from Aaron Wilson.
05:52Um, Texans want to add, okay.
05:54I don't think this is a big surprise.
05:56Texans want to add a younger edge rusher.
05:57Zion Young and Kendrick, Kendrick, Kendrick Falk from Auburn, uh, are the two potential
06:04options.
06:05He says, this is where, if you're going to be picking in the, at the 28th and later in
06:10a draft, it worked out pretty well for the Texans this year by virtue of what their positions
06:15of need are because there are a lot of edge rushers that are, that look like guys that
06:22are second round or later type of edge rushers.
06:24Zion Young, Zion Young's intriguing to me because he sets the edge.
06:27He's physical.
06:28He does all those things where the Texans want the, you know, they, they don't like these,
06:33you know, tiny little pass rushing defensive ends that, you know, aren't interested in stopping
06:39the run.
06:39And he's not gigantic or anything, but he's, he's six, six to 65 or so.
06:43Um, but he'll set the edge in the run game.
06:46And that's something that they want their guys to do.
06:48And that's something that you're missing with the, you know, with Derek Barnett and Danico
06:52Autry.
06:52Um, those guys were good combo pass rushers slash run defenders.
06:56You know what?
06:57I'll, I'll, I'll lay out a situation that the Texans were in about a decade and change
07:02ago and drafting in almost the same spot in the draft was in 2012 when, um,
07:09they were drafting 26th overall, I believe.
07:12And, and this pick kind of, I think caught people a little bit off guard.
07:15He was a guy who was sort of mocked in that area of the draft, but not much to the
07:19Texans.
07:20But if the Texans were to do this and draft a young edge rusher with say the 28th overall
07:24pick was when they drafted Whitney Merciless back in 2012.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Cause if you remember Seth, they had, they had JJ Watt who had just, who was JJ Watt who had
07:35just shown as a rookie, like, okay, this, there's something to this kid.
07:39And they had Connor Barwin, who was actually a double digit sack guy in 2011.
07:43And they had Brooks Reed, honestly, like we're just talking about guys that attack off the
07:47edge and they drafted Whitney Merciless out of Illinois.
07:50And I think that caught people a little off guard, but that wound up being a pretty good
07:53pick for the Texans.
07:54You know, if you, if you draft the years of service, they got out of them alone.
07:58Whitney Merciless was a very solid player for the Texans.
08:01I mean, it's, it took a little while for him to kind of get his feet wet.
08:04And I don't think they even exercised his fifth year option, but then in his third year,
08:08he really started to break out and they, they gave him a big extension.
08:12You got six, seven good years out of Whitney Merciless.
08:15If you draft the equivalent of Whitney Merciless with the 28th pick in the draft, that's a successful
08:19pick.
08:20And that's one thing to remember too, because a lot of our listeners will say, Hey, I want
08:24to, I don't want to draft the guy in the first round that they, they can't play immediately.
08:29That's what a lot of times they'll say that if we project a guard or a tackle and I get
08:34that.
08:35And that's a hundred percent, but that is also where a defensive end on this team, the rookie
08:40is going to play unless he's a bust.
08:42Yeah.
08:43You know, Danico Autry and Derek Barnett combined for about five or 600 snaps last year as backup
08:49defensive ends.
08:49They rotate in the Texans defensive ends, Daniel Hunter and Will Anderson don't play a hundred
08:54percent of the snaps.
08:55So it makes a lot of sense.
08:57It's just that this is a year where you're, there's probably not a huge separation between
09:02the guys that are available to him at 28 and the guys that will be available to him at
09:0738 or 59.
09:08Yep.
09:09That's right.
09:09Um, okay.
09:10Next nugget from, uh, Aaron Wilson, courtesy of Texans, Jacob, uh, looking for a punter competition
09:16with Kai Kroger and Jack Stonehouse being an option.
09:19I don't think we need to spend too much time on that.
09:21A couple of great names though.
09:22They are good names.
09:23That's a tough one.
09:24We're going to have to, uh, some slow day in June or July, let's decide who has the
09:28better name and we'll pull for that guy.
09:30Kai Kroger and Jack, Jack Stonehouse is like a rodeo cowboy name.
09:34You know, like when you go to the Houston livestock show and rodeo, those cowboys all have names
09:38where you're like, that guy was basically named to be a cowboy.
09:41Uh, now Jack Stonehouse more of a linebacker name, but that's pretty good.
09:44You know what I like about Kai Kroger?
09:46I didn't realize how many different supermarket chains are owned by Kroger.
09:51Oh yeah.
09:52And when I was out in, uh, one of the big chains out in the Pacific Northwest, I, I just,
09:58uh,
09:58I, I just on a flyer, I punched in my shopper code and it worked.
10:02I didn't even know for sure.
10:03I know from time.
10:05Safeway.
10:06Well, I know one is King Super.
10:08King Super is a big Denver chain.
10:10And I, I remember that was, uh, King Super is one of them might be Safeway.
10:14Um, all right.
10:15So, uh, we'll move on from the punter competition.
10:17All right, here we go.
10:18Supermarket discussion.
10:19Yeah.
10:20Yes.
10:21Um, okay.
10:22We like this just based on our audio.
10:24We played in the previous segment, Kristen Miller was quote, one of the good visits Houston
10:30has had so far.
10:31Kristen Miller, the defensive lineman from the university of Georgia.
10:35And you made the comparison, Seth, in the previous segment from a personality standpoint
10:40to Will Anderson Jr.
10:42Let's refresh everybody's memory about what D'Amico Ryans thought of Will Anderson Jr.'s
10:4830 visit.
10:48This is D'Amico from last week's owners meetings, reminding us that Will Anderson Jr.
10:54had the greatest 30 visit of all time.
10:56You talk about a leader and a guy who does everything the right way, everything you want,
11:00everything I've asked of him.
11:01And, you know, just being in this draft, um, this draft, this draft time, I just remember
11:07back, you know, speaking with Will, he was our first 30 visit, first guy we had in on
11:11a 30 visit.
11:12And that, that meeting is still the best 30 visit I've ever seen.
11:16Like, he's just that type of guy.
11:18And, you know, he's a leader in all respects.
11:22Uh, so I, I love having Will, love what he can provide to our organization.
11:26I think he's, he's shown that in three years that he's been here.
11:29All right, so Will Anderson Jr., great 30 visit, according to Aaron Wilson and what
11:33he's hearing, Kristen Miller, to very little surprise, I would imagine.
11:36Great 30 visit with the Texans.
11:38So let's fire up the Kristen Miller jukebox, Seth.
11:41Let's hear, let's hear from the kid.
11:42This was, uh, this one, there was one key part.
11:45See if you can pick out the part in this quote from Kristen Miller.
11:48He was on with, uh, I think it was CBS Sports, um, at the Combine doing, or no, it was
11:54NBC
11:54Sports doing an interview at the Combine.
11:56And they asked him about, hey, why did you decide to go back to school instead of entering
12:01the draft last year?
12:03It, it honestly, it felt difficult from the outside perception.
12:06But for me, it was like, it was an easy decision.
12:08Like, as a man that want to be better, as a man that want to be great, you got to
12:13hold
12:13your own self to a certain standard.
12:15You got to hold your own self to a certain amount of accountability.
12:18And I told myself, like, Chris, are you ready to be an NFL player?
12:21You're not.
12:22And I didn't want to leave an unfinished product.
12:25I didn't want to leave without a degree.
12:26I don't want to leave not a team captain.
12:28And I want to get another national championship, which you came short of.
12:31But, like, that was my whole mindset.
12:32And I told myself, like, Chris, um, you get to go back another year.
12:38Uh, you get to be a team captain, graduate, and then get a little, get a little NIL, a
12:44little money.
12:45Get a little, get a little money while you're doing it.
12:48So, Joshua, it was mad at him.
12:50I love that he, I love, I know he was doing it.
12:52It sounded like a little tongue in cheek, the NIL.
12:54I love that he acknowledged that, that, that, that's a big, that's a, that's a huge factor
12:58that allows you to make that type of decision.
13:01Yeah, that is.
13:01Remember when we were speculating whether guys would stay in the draft because, uh, stayed in
13:06college another year, uh, because of the NIL money, it makes it easier too.
13:10And yeah, we've heard time after time.
13:11The part that caught my ear there was that twice he mentioned being a team captain, you
13:17know, and that's something that's important to the Texans.
13:19And they, if a guy isn't a captain, but he's one of the best players on the team, they're,
13:23they're, they're going to wonder why exactly wasn't he a captain.
13:26Um, so I think the fact that he wanted to be a captain, wanted to win a national championship,
13:30all of that, it sounds a lot like a Kamari Lasseter type of guy at Georgia.
13:34You know, uh, Kamari Lasseter refused to sit out of the playoffs after he dabbled in it
13:40for what?
13:40About 36 hours.
13:42It was, it was a bowl game.
13:43It was, it wasn't even a playoff game, not the playoffs.
13:45Yeah.
13:46It was just the bowl game.
13:46Yeah.
13:47So obviously he wouldn't have set out the playoffs.
13:49Right.
13:49Um, but yeah, it was just the bowl game, similar to the story we heard about Will Anderson,
13:53you know, wanting to play in the bowl game, his senior year.
13:56And I feel like Kristen Miller is, seems to be wired that same way.
14:01And also went to Georgia, which the Texans coaches and executives just really respect
14:06the work that Georgia does developmentally on those guys.
14:09Let's play one more from Kristen Miller.
14:11Let's skip down just for time's sake, because we haven't played this one yet, Ben.
14:14Let's, let's play the one where we played it before, but not recently.
14:18The one on Kamari Lasseter.
14:21I'm not going to lie.
14:22Kamari Lasseter, he, he got a deep tackle heart.
14:25Like, man, he a man amongst men.
14:26And just like, I was just on the phone with Kamari yesterday.
14:29He just, one thing about him, he never changed.
14:32He's always the same.
14:32Everywhere you go, he got a mindset that's, that's, that's, that won't be stopped.
14:36And, um, just being in Athens with Kamari, he always held me accountable.
14:39And that's my brother.
14:41I love him.
14:41Got a lot of love for him.
14:42And I might be on his team.
14:43You never know.
14:44Okay.
14:44I just like hearing, I like hearing kind words about Kamari Lasseter.
14:47I like hearing him say that he's got a D-line mentality.
14:49I like that, too.
14:50That's something a lot of other people have said independently.
14:52Like, yeah, he just, he plays like he's a deep, he thinks he's a defensive end, I think.
14:55Uh, Kamari?
14:57Yeah.
14:57He plays like he thinks he does set the edge nicely in the run game.
15:00Yeah, he does.
15:01Yeah.
15:02He wishes he could have been a defensive end.
15:04He might.
15:04He might.
15:04Last bullet point here, or nugget from, uh, Aaron Wilson, courtesy of Texans, Jacob.
15:09Uh, Caden McDonald and Lee Hunter have both met with the Texans, quote, extensively.
15:14So I don't know what exactly extensively means.
15:16If it means they met.
15:17Caden McDonald and who?
15:18Oh, and Lee Hunter.
15:19Lee Hunter from Texas Tech.
15:20Yeah.
15:21Caden McDonald, I think that he's, he's an interesting one that could very easily go in the first round.
15:25Cause I think people see him as potentially more of a pass rusher than he really was able
15:29to show in college.
15:30Lee Hunter is a guy that is intriguing cause he's really big and strong and physical, but
15:38it's harder to envision him being a good pass rusher.
15:41But I like, I think that the Texans might look him at as a guy, as a guy though, that
15:46does
15:46make a lot of sense and would fit in, in terms of mindset and potential.
15:50But, uh, yeah, I like both those guys, but I think Caden McDonald is the guy that I really,
15:55really like good nuggets there.
15:56I enjoyed that.
15:57That was, uh, that was nice.
15:59And any chance to play more Christian Miller audio is always a good thing.
