Why can't all stadiums have the same dimensions and why do we accept it?

00:01I feel like I'm working with Lynn Henning over here.
00:09Just saying.
00:15The crusade that Lynn Henning is on about baseball parks and their dimensions
00:21is one of the most committed crusades from a sports reporter I have ever seen.
00:25It really is.
00:26I mean, going back to when Comerica Park opened and probably, I mean,
00:31who knows if he was doing it before that, but Lynn Henning.
00:35I found a Briggs tweet from Lynn Henning.
00:36Right.
00:37I bet bangs the drum about ballpark dimensions and how much he hates them.
00:41And I had to get something out of the studio.
00:44I walked back in and Gator was talking to Costa about dimensions out in Arizona.
00:52By the way, bravo.
00:53That's a, you made me laugh compared me to Lynn and I should have a 10th as much baseball
01:00knowledge as Lynn does.
01:01I love him.
01:02No, Lynn's the best.
01:03However, Lynn's got one thing he's laser focused on and he bangs that drum like nobody.
01:08I, you know, there are, there are, there are usually a couple of columns a year that will
01:13mention something about the, uh, uh, about the dimensions specifically at Comerica Park.
01:19Uh, and now he's with this, uh, Tigers collective, which is kind of interesting that they're doing.
01:23Um, but he will tweet about dimensions and last night.
01:26Well, here's the, here's an example, uh, cause the Tigers had a, uh, a rally in the third inning
01:34kind of killed by the dimensions in Arizona last night.
01:38Uh, one of them was a ball hit deep to center where it's four, four 16.
01:42Is that what it is?
01:43And then they've got 415 feet to straight away.
01:46But it also has a yellow line that, that goes straight up and the Tigers hit two baseballs
01:55out there in one inning and didn't get rewarded for it.
01:58And Lynn Henning tweeted, Tigers hit back to back rockets to center field worth 800 feet
02:03fly out, double extreme ballparks, protect crummy pitchers and penalize good hitting Gator
02:08on a show sheet.
02:09I hate that center field area in Arizona's ballpark.
02:11I walk into the studio, he's bitching Acosta about the Arizona ballpark dimensions.
02:16Um, and so the, the first one was a dingler that hit it out there that got caught.
02:23I think it was dingler that drilled one out there that got caught.
02:25And then the next Cole Keith after Kerry Carpenter walk hit one that was up the wall, but beneath
02:35the yellow line and it landed on like the Gert, the eye beam of a balcony pop straight up in
02:40the air.
02:41It looked like it might be a home run, but it was, it was in fact, the double Kerry Carpenter
02:44probably should have scored.
02:46Um, but, but the, the dimensions got them a little bit last night.
02:50Both teams played the same dimensions.
02:52Let me, let me explain myself a little bit further here because I don't, it's, it's not
02:56so much the distances don't bother me.
02:58Really.
02:58It's not that it's, if you're going to build a new ballpark like they did, I'm not sure
03:04why you would build a ballpark that has this giant wall in center field.
03:11It just seems dumb.
03:14Um, if, if the wall, I just, I don't know.
03:17It, it, it seems really stupid.
03:19Like the ball is hit on my goal.
03:19Okay.
03:20It's going to hit against the wall and it's well above the padding.
03:22It's a home run.
03:23And then the, wait a minute.
03:24Oh, there's a yellow line.
03:25It's 20 feet straight up in the, why is there a yellow line up there?
03:29Oh, that's the home run line.
03:31And then there's like, there's, it doesn't make any sense.
03:33Like there's no Scott fan involvement there that makes it better for them.
03:37There was a hill in Houston.
03:39I, this is a berm, please.
03:41Yeah.
03:42I don't know if you heard about this, but they're putting a hole in the outfield in Vegas.
03:46Just a hole.
03:47They're going to put a hole out there.
03:48You can run into the hole.
03:50They're not doing that, but there's, it's one of the strangest things about sports.
03:57A moat.
03:58We accept that the field of play is different.
04:02Yeah.
04:04If you think about applying that concept to just about any other sport, hockey has it
04:10a little bit, although I guess Olympic size ice is going away, but there are some, I guess
04:16some minor differences in ranks, but at the end of the day, it is a bizarre thing that
04:21we accept as okay is ballpark dimensions.
04:28I want to get this correct.
04:29It's the tiger's intelligence report is what Lynn Henning writes in the sub stack.
04:33And he's great.
04:35Yeah.
04:36It's great.
04:36But Lynn bags a drum.
04:38And I, we, we've had these conversations before.
04:40King's asked me a number of times about, you know, the thing it's maybe one of King's
04:44pet peeves is why is every ballpark different?
04:46And I think that's kind of unique and makes it cool about each ballpark.
04:51I don't mind the dimensions.
04:52It's not, it's, it's doing something dumb, like putting a wall in straightaway center field
04:57that goes up that high in one of these newer ballparks.
05:00And it's not new, but I mean, you know, it's not like the diamondbacks have a rich history,
05:04you know?
05:05So I just, it struck me as like, that's just strange, really is strange.
05:10And yeah.
05:11Do I want Colt Keith to get off to a great start and have home runs?
05:14You betcha.
05:14You bet.
05:15I do.
05:16That kid's too big not to be hitting 25 home runs a year.
05:19And, and he's swung to bat.
05:21There's no wager behind this, is there?
05:22No, there's nothing at all.
05:23And he's, he's off to a good start through four games.
05:26He's hitting the ball well.
05:26He's seeing the ball well.
05:28And I liked that.
05:28And he goes to opposite field, does all these things.
05:30And then he clocked that one.
05:32And you know, it's a, it's a double.
05:34It is what it is.
05:34All right.
05:35I just, I just thought it was dumb in a snapshot of time last night, watching this.
05:39I'm like, how does that make sense?
05:41There's a yellow line and there's nobody around this yellow line.
05:44Like baseball should be for the fans, right?
05:47And the fans love to be participating, have a chance to catch a foul balls and home run
05:53balls and all this.
05:53And then they have no shot with it.
05:55That's just, there's just a massive wall that also serves as a batter's eye out there in
06:01center field in Arizona.
06:02And it might have something to do with the amount of room they had to build that ballpark.
06:05I've been to that ballpark.
06:06It's kind of a, it's a quirky place to say the least.
06:09I enjoyed it.
06:10But then again, I enjoyed it probably because I was sitting in the stands and I rarely get
06:14to sit in the stands and sitting in the stands is so much fun to me.
06:18And so anyway, long story short, it's, it's just a quick bitch for me from last night.
06:23Yeah, it's fine.
06:25It really didn't affect the outcome of the game.
06:27Well, maybe you can join the Tigers pretentious intelligence report.
06:32No, don't say pretentious.
06:33Don't do that.
06:34I mean, honestly, that name sounds like something you would crush.
06:38Jader's a part of the TPI.
06:40Normally I would, but I like Lynn.
06:42Lynn is seriously, I have a ton of respect for Lynn.
06:45Lynn is really, really good at what he does.
06:47Lynn is.
06:47I love Lynn.
06:48When I, when we first got the Tigers in like 2000 or whatever year it was, and I got sent
06:53down to spring training to cover it for a week or so, Lynn was one of the first guys
06:58to reach out and welcome me to the whole, you know, baseball community there and, you
07:03know, covering all those games for the first few years when I was doing the pregame shows
07:06from outside section 119 and all that.
07:09Lynn was great.
07:10There were a few guys are great.
07:12Lynn was great.
07:12Tom Gage, also great.
07:15Gene Guidi was great.
07:17So all the old timers were awesome to me and I always have a high regard for those.
07:22Okay.
07:24Since you bitched about something, I'll bitch about something.
07:26Here we go.
07:26All right.
07:27Are you ready?
07:27Is there anything worse than a 10, 10 start on a Monday night?
07:31I mean, on a Monday night, let's throw a game on a 10, 10.
07:36And, and, and, and, and Hey, look, I know, I get it.
07:39If you're a hardcore fan, you stayed up for the whole thing and got,
07:42God bless you.
07:43It started a little late too.
07:44Didn't it?
07:44It wasn't more like 10, 15.
07:45I don't know.
07:46Was it?
07:46I think so.
07:47Well, they had to make sure they had a year for them, right?
07:50Yeah.
07:50Cause we're at home.
07:51First game at home.
07:52Yeah.
07:53They had to authenticate the first pitch.
07:56Well, we, um, we, we didn't get great start times last night.
08:00Cause they, even like the, the Pistons are going my city game, 930.
08:04So I game ends around 1135, 1140 post game, blah, blah, blah.
08:09Fly back to Detroit.
08:10Eight o'clock start tonight.
08:12Yeah.
08:12What?
08:13Yeah.
08:13And I'm like, I'm not, I'm not like teams play back to backs in different
08:19venues.
08:19That does happen.
08:20I suppose.
08:21Give them the nine 30 start.
08:23Yeah.
08:23That's a, you go ahead, bitch away.
08:25I'm not going to stop you.
08:26I'm sorry.
08:26I didn't mean to interrupt.
08:27I feel like you might have a good rant.
08:29Come on.
08:29I don't, I'm not going to rant about it.
08:31I just, I'm not going to go all old guy, but seriously, 10, 10 on a Monday
08:35night, 10, 10.
08:37Do you hate the fans?
08:39Is that what it is?
08:40Well, the games tonight, the game tonight is at nine 40.
08:42See, we got a half hour difference.
08:44And that half hour can matter.
08:45And it's a Tuesday.
08:47Like seriously, every day of the week, we know how this works every day of
08:51the week.
08:51You get a little bit more enthusiastic.
08:52You start, you know, pre-week ending.
08:55And so staying up, if it's a 10, 10 on a Thursday, I'm in for the whole
08:59thing.
08:59In fact, I'm probably have a six pack by, you know, in the, in the, in the
09:03cooler next to the couch in the basement.
09:06I can't do that in the living room.
09:08I only control the basement.
09:11Which is fine.
09:12Oh God.
09:13It's like Kenny and his hot dog roller that he has used to have in the
09:17living room.
09:17Now it's in the kitchen sacrifices when you get, when you get married.
09:21But yeah, I mean, you give me a 10, 10 on a Thursday, buckle up.
09:25Let's go 10, 10 on a Monday.
09:28Get lost.
09:29I'm not doing that.
09:30I mean, are you kidding me?
09:31Yeah, it was no fun.
09:32There's no, and now that you mentioned it, cause the game tonight, the
09:34Pistons are home tonight against Toronto after playing an overtime game last
09:37night in Oklahoma city, a strange quirk in his schedule.
09:41Perhaps that is exactly why we, we did not see a host of players.
09:46Oh, in the Pistons game?
09:47Yeah, the Pistons game.
09:48Where the hell did everybody go?
09:50Who's playing?
09:51There were guys listed out with injuries, but I kind of, I kind of like what
09:55they're doing because, well, we'll get into it as the show goes on.
09:58It's going to be a long show.
09:59Hey, champion jumper posted.
10:01So go to our website, 9some1aticket.com to see who the champion jump on a
10:05weekend are.
10:05Look, we said it yesterday.
10:07The excitement level to watch Justin Verlander pitches a tiger.
10:10I put it at a nine expectation was at a five, a scale of one to 10.
10:17And last night was a reason why what went wrong is a correctable.
10:21What do we got in Justin Verlander?
10:23This 2.0 version.
10:25It's Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
