00:00Doug Karsh, Scott Anderson, 97.1.
00:04All right, so story circulating today with some quotes from Rod Wood.
00:10It's interesting.
00:10He does say he thinks he made a mistake at his introductory press conference
00:14by saying what he said, which was paraphrasing,
00:16this is the only organization that would hire me.
00:19But what he meant was, I'm tight with the Ford family.
00:23They trust me.
00:24And he says, I wish I would have worded that differently.
00:27Secondly, regarding the edge rusher opposite of Hutch, I get it.
00:34The cap side, as I said, is easier to manipulate than your cash budget,
00:37but eventually the bill comes due.
00:40I know, and everybody else thinks we need to have a partner to Hutch.
00:44It reminds me so much of everybody said we need to have another receiver
00:47opposite of Calvin.
00:48When you have one of those guys trying to get another one, it's really hard.
00:52How many teams have two?
00:53It would almost be like if you had a great starting quarterback as a backup,
00:57because there aren't enough guys to go around, then you'll pay one like we did
01:01with Aiden, and you try and pay another one.
01:03Let's say you did.
01:04Let's say you now have 75 or 80 million of your cap tied up with pass rushers.
01:09You're giving up something else.
01:11So would we love to have another great pass rusher?
01:14Yeah, but we'll probably have to find him in the draft versus we go out and pay
01:18top dollar for him.
01:20So a couple things about that statement.
01:22I didn't love that statement because I don't think you can compare having two guys
01:28around the field at the same time to a quarterback and a backup quarterback.
01:31That's not fair.
01:32And as far as the Calvin stuff that we want another receiver to go with Calvin,
01:36yeah, we did.
01:37And you need, again, receivers around the field.
01:41I think we all understand if the Lions had made a move to acquire Max Crosby or gone
01:46and made a bid on Trey Hendrickson that, yeah, it's going to cost you something or could cost
01:50you something in the future.
01:52And maybe it's one of these 2023 guys.
01:55If that's the case, so be it.
01:57I mean, there are hard decisions you have to make.
01:58And when I think about the here and now with this team, let's just say that you made the
02:06decision to sign Trey Hendrickson, all right?
02:08You've got the four-year deal that he signed.
02:11You bring in Trey Hendrickson to be the other edge rusher.
02:14And the casualty is, say, it's Brian Branch.
02:18Well, Brian Branch isn't likely to play until maybe halfway through the season.
02:22So it really is a go-for-it-for-this-upcoming-year move because I'm not displacing him yet.
02:29Um, after this year, I could let Brian Branch go if that's what I choose to do because I
02:34had already made my bed to, to, uh, to, to sign Trey Hendrickson.
02:37Then I'll have to deal with that afterwards, but I might already be looking for the replacement
02:42at safety this year in a draft anyway, because both safeties, who knows?
02:46Yeah.
02:47So it's the same thing.
02:48It's either, either I, I, I sign the edge rusher and go with a draft pick with a safety
02:54or, or, or what?
02:55I go with the draft pick of the edge rusher.
02:57And I, and I, and I, and I sign the same true accessibility to max cross because I
03:01have no interest in Hendrickson.
03:02I think Hendrickson is another injury waiting to happen, but he goes on to add this.
03:05The priority he said was to quote, keep our sustainability at a good level and not be
03:10a one and done type team would said the concept of sustainability doesn't mean the lines aren't
03:14pushing hard for a championship.
03:15Now quote, I can see why that would be interpreted that way.
03:19But to me, sustainability means we're going to be able to compete for championships over a
03:23long period of time.
03:25Not that we aren't, not that we're going to try and be pretty good for a long period of
03:28time.
03:28So I think when we talk about sustainability, it's not to go nine and eight, nine and eight.
03:32It's to be able to compete for championships with the core of guys that we drafted.
03:37So, and they're going to value their first round picks and all their picks, because that's
03:41how you are able to afford the older players.
03:43The guys you resign is by replenishing the rest of the roster with talented draft picks.
03:48You better get the draft, right?
03:49You better crush the draft and keep crushing the draft.
03:53And you know, he has for the most part in those past two drafts have gotten more scrutiny.
03:58I think it's way early to judge the most recent draft, but it's interesting insight from
04:02Rob Wood.
04:03So it is.
04:03And I, I appreciate Dave Burkett sitting out and getting a chance to talk from for nearly
04:07an hour at these, I don't know the owner's meetings or whatever meetings are at, but
04:12Rod Wood is, was there.
04:14And so check out the free press and look at that.
04:17Cause there's, there was a lot to digest there.
04:18I think there's like two or three different articles there, but very insightful.
04:22Let's get back to your open line calls.
04:24We got a Brett in Rochester.
04:25Hi Brett.
04:27Hey guys.
04:30So, champ, I'm going to pivot now.
04:33Oh boy, Brett, you're in a bad cell.
04:35Are you there?
04:36Can you hear me?
04:37Yeah, better.
04:38Go ahead.
04:38Can you hear me?
04:39Can you hear me?
04:39That's way better.
04:40Go ahead.
04:42Okay.
04:42All right.
04:42Yeah.
04:42Champ is going to be my grandpa, Tom Winkle, who passed away on Saturday and he had season
04:50tickets to the Lions that dated back to 1952 and was responsible for starting a tailgate
04:56group that's now on to its third generation of existence.
05:00I'm going to, I've got two chumps.
05:02I'm going to chump the Detroit Lions for not winning a Superbowl in his lifetime and he made
05:07it to 92 years old, so when I, Rod Wood, talk about strategic, I just want him to know
05:13he ran out of time.
05:14He had 92 years to get it done.
05:16Well, Brett, he did see a couple of NFL championships.
05:20Yeah.
05:21Right.
05:21They just weren't Superbowls.
05:23Really neat.
05:25And then my other chump is going to be Brandon Langenboo.
05:29Was that his last name?
05:30Hangenboo?
05:31It was Hangenboo.
05:32It was Hangenboo.
05:33Hangenboo.
05:34Hangenboo for giving up a toe-pick fallout on a three-man, you just, you can't do it.
05:39Oh, Hangenboo.
05:40Get it together, Hangenboo.
05:43He I don't feel sorry for.
05:46No?
05:49Let's go to Wally and Wyandotte.
05:50You're next.
05:51What's up, Wally?
05:52Hey.
05:53Hey.
05:54I feel, I'm angry at myself because Gator, I've been wanting to use it, so just call me
05:59Pete because I was going to go with Pete Mitchell to force Gator to try to figure out
06:03what movie it was from.
06:04But anyway, two things.
06:06It's Top Gun.
06:07Go ahead.
06:08Yeah, I know.
06:09You would have known it.
06:09I was going to give you some gimme's to start.
06:11What are you talking about?
06:12What are you talking about, though?
06:14Oh, I want to talk about, first off, my champ is Dusty May.
06:19I think what he's done with that team is incredible to take those kids, and they always make the
06:25extra pass, and just watching them is just poetry in motion.
06:30They share the ball so well.
06:32Yeah, and that's taught to them.
06:36My chump is the Red Wing players, not the coach, because I think they're well coached,
06:43and I think they're just not implementing what he's put in place.
06:48He seems so frustrated after the game.
06:50What I really called for was a little Tiger love in that he had zero alcohol in his system.
06:58He had zero.
06:59Tiger Woods.
07:00And if any of you have ever...
07:02Yeah, Tiger Woods.
07:03If any of you have had bad backs and things like that, I'm going to give him the benefit
07:08of the doubt and think, yeah, he probably took prescription drugs.
07:11And my guess is, when he got in the car, he wasn't like he was after he was driving.
07:18And, you know, you're not going to pull over and get a Uber.
07:21You're going to try to get home.
07:22Or you just have somebody to drive you, period.
07:25And, I mean, I don't know.
07:26There's an excuse trying to speed and get past somebody.
07:28I mean, if all of a sudden your body is different because you've taken some medication, this
07:33isn't the first time he's taking medication.
07:36This isn't the first time he's gotten in an accident.
07:40I love Tiger Woods, but I think we're done making excuses for him.
07:46Well, I'm just saying your body will react at different times to the same medication.
07:50I just want people to be cognizant of that.
07:53Well, there's a possibility that there's something here that isn't as bad as it looks, Wally.
07:56And you're right.
07:57There is a possibility.
08:00And we should let this whole thing play out.
08:04It feels like a bit of a stretch, but we do our best to try to be fair to people
08:09and
08:09not try and convict them in the court of public opinion.
08:11But when somebody is a second driving under the influence of one thing or another, whether
08:16it be prescription drugs or alcohol, it feels like there's a high probability that he was
08:21pretty irresponsible.
08:23Well, I think it's interesting that he has yet to release a statement.
08:29And here it is Monday afternoon.
08:31That's something that happened on Friday afternoon.
08:34And all weekend to do something.
08:37Um, and now here's Monday at nearly one 30.
08:40We haven't heard anything.
08:41Uh, Chris is next on 97 one.
08:43Hi, Chris.
08:45Hey, how are we doing?
08:46Okay.
08:48Uh, my champ.
08:49I don't know if people know the background of Gary Woodland and all he's had to go through.
08:54Yeah.
08:55He won the golf tournament this weekend.
08:57Yeah.
08:57The Houston opened and, uh, he's gone through some PTSD after having a lesion removed from his
09:03brain a few years ago and after that, he he's had thoughts that he's, he's going to die and
09:09he's had horrible PTSD with that.
09:12He's had to walk off or run off the course at times because he just broke down in tears.
09:16And, um, the fact that he won that golf tournament yesterday going away and he could see his emotion
09:22afterwards and his speech after he won on the, on the 18th green there and talking about
09:27anybody who's struggling, it was, uh, it was really a nice moment for him.
09:31And, uh, you know, if you, if you're having, uh, if you're, if you are struggling, get help
09:36and don't be afraid to go out and reach out and get help.
09:39Chris, who's your chump?
09:41Uh, Tiger Woods.
09:42And you can figure that as the opposite of what we just talked about.
09:46Yeah.
09:47Tiger's, um, you know, I'll be interested to see, like you said, what his statement is going
09:52to be because, you know, that story is, it's weird and, um, I don't want this to end tragically
10:00for him or for anyone, but it, it, you really have to start wondering.
10:06And this guy was on top of the world, on top of the world, two, four, eight, five, three,
10:12nine, 97, 97.
10:13It's Carson Anderson, 97 one.
