This baseball play really annoys Stoney.
Transcript
00:00There was other baseball yesterday besides McGonagall-Palooza,
00:05which was pretty damn awesome.
00:08Kevin McGonagall's first game in the major leagues,
00:11first pitch, base hit, you know, whatever.
00:14He was great.
00:16Four for five, and no, it's not going to continue.
00:19He's going to go four for five every game,
00:20but it's nice to see a prospect that we've been hearing about
00:24for about two years look like he could be something special,
00:29but it's still just one game,
00:31so I'm not going to make my reservations for Cooperstown in 25 years.
00:36All right, but like I said, there was other baseball yesterday,
00:40and in the earliest game yesterday,
00:43the New York Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7.
00:45Big deal, you say.
00:47Well, Paul Skeens, who is probably the favorite
00:51to win the National League Cy Young Award again,
00:54he did not even make it through one inning.
00:5737 pitches, two walks, four hits, five runs, all earned.
01:06However, if you watch that inning,
01:10O'Neal Cruz, the Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder,
01:17misplayed one ball where he had an awful route that it's like,
01:20what are we, am I watching a little leaguer here?
01:22He doesn't know how to run a route,
01:24and then there was another one he kind of misjudged
01:26whether it was in the sun or whatever.
01:28Anyway, balls that I didn't think,
01:31under normal circumstances, would have been outs.
01:35So I have a little pet peeve,
01:37and it's with official scoring in baseball,
01:40and this one you knew was not going to be called an error
01:44because it never touched a glove, really.
01:46They have to change this.
01:48If a guy is under a ball and he loses it in the sun
01:54or he just makes a bad play,
01:57whether it touches his glove or not,
01:59that should be an error.
02:01It's not the pitcher's fault that the outfielder,
02:06or in some cases the infielder,
02:08don't touch the ball but botch a play
02:12that any regular major leaguer should make.
02:16It should be an error.
02:19It shouldn't be a hit.
02:20It's ridiculous.
02:22You go to these games,
02:24and there are games that you watch on TV,
02:26and there are even ones that are more heinous
02:29than the ones I'm talking about
02:30where they actually do touch glove and things like that.
02:34To me, if a ball's in the glove,
02:36it could be catchable.
02:37It's an error.
02:38I don't care how he got there.
02:40A lot of times,
02:41whoa, he ran for 100 yards
02:43and made a great, you know,
02:45his arms were outstretched,
02:46but the ball went to the webbing of his mitt,
02:49and he dropped it.
02:50Not an error.
02:51No, that's a freaking error.
02:54That ball touches the leather.
02:55That's an error.
02:57A routine pop-up that drops,
03:00that you don't touch,
03:03automatically an error.
03:06This world is getting so soft.
03:08Oh, we don't want to give them an error.
03:10And then they have these A-hole players
03:12who will call up to the press box,
03:14and one scoring plays changed to benefit them.
03:20Yeah, because of their contracts.
03:22I guess somebody has to take the brunt of it.
03:26I have that same gripe,
03:28but it's a different sport.
03:29However, it's when quarterback throws the ball
03:33to the receiver,
03:34receiver tips the ball up in the air,
03:37and it gets picked.
03:38Hit him in the hands.
03:39Yes.
03:40That's not the quarterback's fault.
03:42Quarterback gets an interception for that.
03:44Right.
03:44There has to be a new category
03:45that if a receiver tips the ball in the air,
03:48it goes against the receiver
03:49and not the QB,
03:51because you'll be like,
03:52oh, well, look at how many picks he's thrown.
03:54But when you actually go to look at the picks,
03:57that should have been a catch,
03:58that should have been a catch,
03:59and that should have been a catch.
04:00Yeah.
04:00Ended up being interceptions,
04:02and the quarterback gets punished for that.
04:04Correct.
04:05Because your receiver,
04:06you hit him in the worst spot.
04:07You hit him in the hands.
04:08Right.
04:09And then, look, there's a lot of times,
04:10which I understand why it's not over,
04:12or scored differently,
04:14when the receiver,
04:16or the miscommunication,
04:17the receiver runs the wrong route,
04:20it turns into an interception.
04:21I get it.
04:22But you've seen it where the receiver gets it,
04:25and he flips it way high in the air,
04:27and the safety's just like,
04:28thank you,
04:29and catches it.
04:30Right.
04:30And it's an interception on the quarterback.
04:33All quarterbacks fall.
04:35I don't count those.
04:36I don't care who the quarterback is,
04:38whether I like you or not.
04:39If you throw a pick like that,
04:41in my book,
04:43that's not your fault.
04:44Or one of those, like,
04:45Hail Marys at the end of the half or something.
04:47They shouldn't be interceptions either.
04:49Yeah, you're correct.
04:50Well, I mean,
04:51but on the flip side,
04:53if you catch the touchdown,
04:54you're going to get credit for the touchdown.
04:56So that's...
04:58See, then don't give them credit.
04:59Either way.
05:00Yes.
05:01Because that's like they changed the rule in the NBA,
05:03where the heave at the end of the game,
05:05or a half,
05:06is now counted,
05:07is not counted against your field goal percentage.
05:10Correct.
05:10I agree.
05:11It shouldn't be a touchdown at the end,
05:13or it shouldn't be an interception.
05:14It's just,
05:15if it happens,
05:15it happens.
05:17Like,
05:17Aaron Rodgers shouldn't have been credited
05:19with a touchdown on the Gainwell play
05:21against the Lions,
05:21right?
05:22Pitch back and forth type of thing.
05:25No,
05:25not that one.
05:26The game against the Steelers last year
05:27where Kenneth Gainwell
05:28made that amazing catch,
05:30and Anzalone
05:31forgot to, like,
05:32actually touch him.
05:34Yes.
05:35Well,
05:36you know,
05:36it is what it is.
05:37I know.
05:38It's part of the Lions history.
05:39One thing that annoys me is,
05:42and I hear it all the time,
05:43I heard it yesterday,
05:45oh,
05:45he hit it hard
05:46right at the defender.
05:47That was a hard hit,
05:49but it wasn't a hit.
05:51It was an out.
05:52You cannot say hard hit
05:54when,
05:55in fact,
05:55it wasn't a hit.
05:56The classic Spencer Torkelson metric.
05:58Yes.
05:59Oh,
05:59he hit the ball really hard
06:00right at the outfielder,
06:01but he hit the ball really hard.
06:03We got a couple of good at-bats.
06:05450-foot foul ball.
06:07No,
06:07it's just a foul ball.
06:10But the error thing
06:11really bothers me
06:12because they get away
06:14with these,
06:15these fielders get away
06:16with not being charged
06:17for errors
06:17when they should.
06:19When their routine plays,
06:22just because it doesn't
06:23touch the guy's,
06:24you know,
06:25glove,
06:25that it's not called an error.
06:27It's ridiculous.
06:29And the official scoring
06:31at baseball games
06:32and some of the guys
06:33who do it at Camarga Park,
06:34they,
06:34you know,
06:35they work hard at their
06:36craft,
06:37if we can even call it a craft,
06:38but they're too nice.
06:41They're too lenient.
06:43They are.
06:44And a lot of times
06:45the,
06:45the home players
06:47get the benefit
06:48of the doubt
06:48more than the other.
06:50And a lot of times
06:50it happens with like
06:51no hitters
06:51and things like that.
06:52I say,
06:52let a no hitter happen.
06:54It's an error.
06:55Not a hit.
06:56All right.
06:5797-1.
06:5997-1.
07:0197-1.
