00:00Thank you, Jeremy Otto.
00:03It is a Friday on the Valenti Show with Rico.
00:07He is Rico Beard.
00:09He is Kenny Cott.
00:10He is the Hatchet Man, and I am Mike Stone.
00:15Mike Valenti will be back on Monday.
00:18What's up, Rico?
00:19Big day, big night, a lot of big stuff going on.
00:23Yeah, you'd hope that you get some exciting games
00:26like half of the games were last night.
00:28Yes, not so much, but you know what?
00:32I like it.
00:33I'm not the one who's like, oh, I was up too late.
00:35I don't care.
00:37It's the NCAA tournament.
00:38You've been doing this for years.
00:39Well, plus, you don't have to get up early for this shift.
00:43That's true as well.
00:44Yeah, yeah.
00:45Like tonight, 945.
00:48Okay, it's a weekend.
00:49Most people don't have to work,
00:50but me and Kenny Cott tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m.
00:53So we'll have to fight not to fall asleep.
00:57I don't think I will be falling asleep
00:59because it's the Michigan State game that's second,
01:01and me and my Spartan alum daughter will be watching.
01:07Well, you and Kenny got to get up early.
01:09I know.
01:10What?
01:10Well, just stating facts.
01:12That's all.
01:13No big deal.
01:15You guys will do it fine.
01:17It's part of the deal.
01:19So yesterday, after our shortened show,
01:23and we thanked the Detroit Tigers for that,
01:26we got to go see an opening day that was,
01:31I wouldn't call it one for the ages,
01:32but it was pretty damn close.
01:35I mean.
01:37Everything you wanted to see pretty much happened.
01:39Yeah.
01:40Except the only drawback, it didn't happen here on a nice day.
01:44That's true.
01:45And it wasn't even a nice day here.
01:47Because, like, halfway through the game,
01:49I'm looking outside and say,
01:50oh, my God, it's pouring outside.
01:52I'm glad they were playing in San Diego.
01:55That's for damn sure.
01:57Yeah, but it was like everything that you could have wanted
01:59to happen for the Tigers, especially McGonagall.
02:02Let's face it.
02:02Yes.
02:03Everybody wanted to see what happened.
02:05First pitch, wow.
02:06All right, next at bat.
02:07Wow.
02:07Okay, he legged one out.
02:10Okay.
02:11The down, he didn't go five for five.
02:14So, if you got a nitpick.
02:16But other than that.
02:17No, I mean, if you got a nitpick.
02:21And you shouldn't.
02:22No, because baseball is a game of, you know, failure, basically.
02:26So, yeah, you're going to have guys who go 0 for it.
02:29You know, Carpenter was 0 for 5.
02:31Green was 0 for 4.
02:33But that happens in baseball.
02:35Uh, scoobal, six innings, three hits, one run, and it was unearned.
02:43Six strikeouts, no walks, 74 pitches.
02:47That's the way you want your Cy Young Award winner to start the season.
02:51Yeah.
02:51Don't tax him too much.
02:53Yeah, give him a big lead so he can leave after six innings.
02:57Right.
02:5774 pitches.
02:58Now, I heard this morning, you know, that I got some intel that a lot of fans were unhappy
03:04with Tarek Scuble because he only pitched 74 pitches.
03:08All right.
03:08Look, I am with you on what happened last year in Seattle.
03:12I thought it was weak that he didn't pitch the next inning.
03:15Okay?
03:16It's over with right now.
03:18Let it go.
03:20And if anybody's pissed off that he only threw 74 pitches yesterday, please tell me why.
03:27That's all I got to say.
03:29The reason why, Stoney, is people are still angry and they're upset.
03:33You got to let some stuff go.
03:34Last year was last year.
03:35That was a different season.
03:37I think they just want to see some type of, I think a lot of fans feel like Scuble owes
03:43them.
03:44You owe us an inning.
03:45You owe us to go out there and give us a complete game, give us something, give us a no
03:51-hitter,
03:51and we'll forgive you for this.
03:54Other than that, for some, no matter what you do, we're going to hold this against you.
03:59We'll never forget it.
04:00Plus, you didn't sign a long-term deal to boot.
04:04So, what was the point?
04:06You're not really a Detroiter.
04:08You don't really want to be here.
04:09That's where I think some fans are.
04:12If you were ever going to sit a pitcher down early, it was a game like that.
04:16He's up.
04:17Eight to nothing.
04:18Right.
04:18It's like, there's no point of him being in the game anymore.
04:22You got this.
04:24Yeah.
04:24If your bull print blows this, you got bigger issues.
04:27That's right.
04:28So, we'll get back to Scuble later in the show, probably around 3 o'clock.
04:32But I do want to mention, you know, it was an almost perfect game by the Detroit Tigers.
04:37And, you know, I was only joking and nitpicking on the guys that didn't get any hits because
04:41that happens in baseball.
04:42So, the only thing you might want to nitpick is Drew Anderson didn't look really good in
04:48his Tiger debut.
04:49I mean, but it's one outing.
04:50I'm not going to, you know, crucify the guy for one bad outing.
04:53You know, one and a third, two hits, and an earned run, two walks.
04:58I mean, because the positives outweighed the negatives.
05:02I mean, hell.
05:03Javi, one for three, and hold on for a second.
05:06He drew a walk.
05:08I mean, he did strike out of one pitch that was way out of the strike zone, but he did
05:13draw a walk.
05:14That's positive, right?
05:16Parker Meadows, he got a hit and drove in two runs.
05:21Dingler, home run on his two hits.
05:25Tork had a hit.
05:26I mean, Colt Keith had two hits.
05:30Gleyber Torres, he had a hit.
05:31So, I mean, it was, they kicked their ass.
05:34I know.
05:34Trust me.
05:35Trust me.
05:36I know it's one of 162.
05:39I'm not putting up any magic numbers right now.
05:41It's a long-ass season.
05:43So, we didn't get our championship ring yesterday?
05:46No, we didn't.
05:47Wow.
05:47We didn't.
05:48And, you know, there's no guarantee they're going to even win this series.
05:52Oh, yeah.
05:52I like their chances with Valdez going today, but, you know, Michael King's a pretty good
05:55pitcher for the San Diego Padres.
05:58248-539-9797.
06:02Was it everything and more that you hoped for the opening day?
06:07We understand it doesn't mean that they're going to win the division or win the World
06:13Series based upon opening day.
06:16We've seen bad Tiger teams in the past win opening days.
06:20We've seen good Tiger teams lose an opening day.
06:25It's, like we said, one out of 162, and that's the way it is.
06:31But there was some, you know, excellent signs.
06:34I mean, I think one of the biggest ones got lost.
06:38First inning, Riley Green.
06:40Walks.
06:41Yeah.
06:41This man, like some 200-some strikeout, he took a walk.
06:45He did strikeout.
06:46Plague discipline.
06:47Yeah, but it was like a six-pit bat on one of his strikeouts.
06:51So, yeah.
06:52Look, I'm not going to sit here and micromanage every game the rest of the way, but we, you
06:58know, when you have a good team, you do focus a lot on individual games more than, I don't
07:04know, 2015 through last year, basically, or two years ago.
07:09That's just the way it is.
07:10I mean, when this, you know, the Ron Gardenhire era, we weren't sitting there saying, oh,
07:16my God, they lost the opening day or they won opening day.
07:19No, we know that the Tigers are really good, especially in this division where I think,
07:25you know, Kansas City, who didn't play yesterday, they're the, that's the team you have to worry
07:30about, and I'll always still worry about Cleveland, because they're Cleveland, and they always
07:35do what they do.
07:36They're a pain in the ass, but they're always, you know, well-managed, and they had a lot
07:40of pitching.
07:412-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
07:44Here, I'll give you my takeaways from opening day.
07:46Kerry Carpenter sucks.
07:47Riley Green is awful.
07:48Kevin McGonigal is in the MVP conversation with Otani and Aaron Judge.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Those are my takeaways from opening day, guys.
07:55We're going to the World Series.
07:56We're going to win it all.
07:57No.
07:57Wait, wait, wait.
07:58Hold on a second.
07:59Hold on, David.
08:00And the MVP category with Aaron Judge.
08:03Aaron Judge took it 0 for his first game.
08:06Kevin McGonigal is much better than Aaron Judge.
08:08There you go.
08:09No, I'm being funny here.
08:10I know.
08:11Because a lot of people, I feel, are going a little bit too far, especially with the
08:16Kevin McGonigal love.
08:17I'm excited about it.
08:18Yeah.
08:19I love it.
08:194-4-5.
08:20I enjoyed every bit of it.
08:21I sat here and celebrated every hit that he got.
08:26But it's one game.
08:28Yes, exactly.
08:29We have a long season ahead of us.
08:32And there will be times where he struggles this season.
08:35There will be times when Riley Green looks great.
08:37He won't go 0 for 4.
08:38Kerry Carpenter won't go 0 for 5.
08:40It's baseball.
08:41Yes.
08:41David, a lot happens, especially for McGonigal.
08:45I look for, if there's going to be a fall off, probably around the late May, June, when
08:51it's the second go around.
08:52Because the first time around, everybody's kind of looking.
08:56This is all new.
08:57By the second time he sees the teams again, that's when they're going to say, you know
09:02what?
09:02Don't throw him a first pitch fastball.
09:04Don't do this.
09:05Don't do that.
09:06Make him reach for this.
09:08Throw him this kind of pitch.
09:10And that's when we'll see, okay, if there's going to be a fall off.
09:13But right now, it's new.
09:14And it was, I loved it.
09:17It was just like, dude, you out there living your best life right now.
09:20Like, if your season, if your career ended, you had a hell of a game.
09:24You had a hell of a day.
09:25And you got some great stories to tell.
09:28I mean, look, everybody all off season was salivating to see this kid play.
09:34You know, hoping that he'd make the team.
09:37And he was good enough in spring training to make the team where A.J.
09:41Hinch and Scott Harris and company said, you know what?
09:43The hell with service time.
09:45If we want to get better, like we said, offensively, we have to do it from within.
09:50And he's going to make us better.
09:52And he's versatile.
09:54He can play many positions.
09:55And, you know, his first game was terrific.
09:57And hopefully that'll keep up.
10:01Kenny Cotty, you're a big Tiger fan.
10:02Were you geeked, so to speak?
10:05I mean, I was happy.
10:07It was very encouraging to see it.
10:08But it's, I mean, how many times have we seen a prospect, I mean, speaking specifically about
10:13McGonagall, come up and have one to a good week, a good two weeks, a good month.
10:17I mean, it's still, it's encouraging.
10:20I'm glad it started this way.
10:21But I'm not ready to jump out of my chair just yet.
10:24You don't have the McGonagall jersey like you have with the most side of it.
10:28Well, you know what?
10:29If you're going to buy that jersey, right about now is the time to get it because he'd look
10:33pretty good and nobody's going to laugh at you.
10:352, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 9, 7, 9, 7.
10:38What'd you take away from opening day?
10:40What did you take away?
10:43Because David has him going to the World Series.
10:45He's got everybody winning everything from Cy Young, the MVP.
10:49Oh, and I'm his rookie of the year.
10:50Dingler has to be in the MVP race as well.
10:52I forgot about him.
10:53McGonagall for not only rookie of the year, but for MVP as well.
10:56But no, seriously, what did you take away from this game?
10:59Because one of the things I took away was I liked the fact they looked really good.
11:04Stoney, I don't know if people remember last year they lost to the Dodgers.
11:08Right.
11:08But I was like, that's a competitive team.
11:10Yes.
11:11And the Dodgers were having their ring ceremony.
11:13They wanted to win that game.
11:14The Tigers lost.
11:17But that day, I'm like, this may be a team that can do something in the playoffs.
11:21Yeah, they lost, what, the first three games, if I'm not mistaken.
11:24They did.
11:24But in all the games, it was like, you got swept, but there's no moral victories, but
11:30damn, you looked good in LA.
11:32Absolutely.
11:33All right.
11:332, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
11:36This is 97.
11:361.
