00:03Hi, I'm David Fenner, Creative Director of The Signifier.
00:08Welcome to the Laboratory, where Frederick Russell and his team
00:11develop the controversial technology that allows one to explore virtual recreations
00:16of recorded senses and unconscious realms of the mind of a subject,
00:19using the Dreamwalker machine.
00:21In The Signifier, you take on the role of Frederick Russell,
00:25an expert in AI and psychology,
00:27and the main researcher behind an experimental deep brain scanner called the Dreamwalker.
00:32He now finds himself thrust into a web of intrigue and powerful interests
00:37in hopes of preserving his work.
00:39The game starts when you're asked by a government agency
00:42to investigate the memories of Joanna Kast,
00:45the vice president of the world's biggest tech company,
00:48who turned up dead in her apartment under mysterious circumstances.
00:54Your investigation begins in the real world,
00:57where you visit locations, search for clues,
00:59talk to characters, gather information, and make decisions.
01:04And then, there's your exploration of Joanna's sensory and unconscious realms
01:09from the brain scan taken right after her death.
01:15That's Evie, the AI that powers the virtual recreations of the Dreamwalker machine
01:20by synthesizing the data from the deep brain scan.
01:23As you ask her to find the specific memories that might help with the case,
01:27Evie is able to create a timeline for the events that can be explored in the virtual space.
01:32Inside each scan, you find different events that have been reconstructed for exploration.
01:38For most, Evie is able to create two versions.
01:41The objective version creates a virtual world
01:44from only the sight and hearing sensory data of the subject.
01:47Here, you must rely on your observation skills
01:50to interpret and make sense of the scene
01:52without the clatter of any subconscious responses the subject may have had.
01:57Where possible, Evie also creates a subjective version of the event
02:02that attempts to interpret how the memory was felt.
02:05This creates a more fluid environment.
02:09Investigating the subjective state is not simple.
02:12Reconstructed memories are based on fuzzy sounds and images of the rain,
02:16and if you add subjective data,
02:18the subjective state becomes a place that is hard to interpret.
02:22Here, you may have to deal with perspective and time errors that need to be fixed,
02:26raw data, avatars, subjective entities,
02:30and sometimes, subjective data might be even blocked
02:34by the subject's subconscious mechanisms themselves.
02:38You can freely move between memory and events as you discover them,
02:42and begin to piece together a more complete version of events,
02:46and try to find the truth in them.
02:49Both reality and mind complement each other.
02:52What you find in the mind might be useful in reality, and vice versa.
02:57The Signifier is a first-person techno-art mystery adventure
03:00that blends investigation, experimental psychology, and artificial intelligence.
