01:28And what prompted you to write a book like this?
01:36Well, I spent 22 years as a police officer with the Pima County Sheriff's Department in Tucson, Arizona
01:45And there were
01:46I was very blessed
01:48I had a great career
01:49I was a detective and detective sergeant most of the time
01:54I had wonderful assignments
01:56A lot of interesting assignments
01:59And at the end of it
02:02I started to reflect on that 22 years
02:06And it occurred to me that there were things that had occurred that were troubling me about the criminal justice
02:15system
02:16And at that time, I wanted to write fiction
02:21And try to put some of my observations into that book
02:27The problems that arose from my perspective as a detective
02:33That's crazy
02:34You know that, right?
02:35Like, a detective gets into things that most police officers
02:39Regular police officers don't get into
02:41Like the crime scene
02:42And the research
02:44And all of the clues
02:46It's like
02:48What was that like?
02:50I mean, to write the book
02:51Did it take you back to those days
02:53Where you were doing a specific crime?
02:56Oh yes, absolutely
02:58Particularly the homicide assignments
03:02To me, that must have been
03:07I don't know
03:08Don't let me dictate what this is to you
03:11But to me
03:12If I had to go through that
03:14It would be traumatizing to see someone
03:16Whose life had been cut short
03:18Because of a homicide
03:22So
03:22How did that affect you?
03:24And then how did that affect your writing?
03:27Well, it does affect the officer
03:31The detective
03:33And one of the things that I noticed
03:36It's loosely kind of based on my own experiences
03:40And there was a time when I was a rookie
03:44And I was very eager
03:45At getting into the job
03:48Then there was a time after many years
03:50Of many bodies
03:51And a lot of tragedy
03:54That it was taking its toll
03:56And one of the common things
03:58That happens with detectives
04:00Is failed marriages
04:02And substance abuse
04:04Particularly alcoholism
04:06And I wanted to make sure
04:10In this book
04:11That I put that aspect
04:13Of what it was like
04:15To be a police officer
04:16And to deal with this on a daily basis
04:19And what toll it takes on
04:21The officer
04:22And his family
