Will the Red Wings be able to build on their biggest win of the season?
Transcript
00:00For the record, I didn't write them off, and I've been, if I'm the source of hope, you know things
00:04are effed.
00:05But I've been here, and I may loathe watching them sometimes, because, man, it's tough.
00:10That was a huge win last night.
00:11Just so you know, the day they mathematically are in the playoffs, I'm going to wear the hat the entire
00:16show.
00:17Respect.
00:19248-539-9797.
00:20Let's get to the hockey elite.
00:22They are out in droves, and I'm here for it.
00:24I want to know, because they're damn near minus 300 to make it.
00:26You have to have an element of confidence based on the mathematics.
00:31And for people who go, oh, why do you give a damn what Vegas has to say?
00:34Guys, it's all algorithmic.
00:37Vegas is not emotional.
00:38It's on tens of thousands of data points, and it's not like an emotional thing or a discount thing.
00:45Minus 300 is pretty heady stuff.
00:47Vegas is just about balancing the money.
00:49That's it.
00:50To the people.
00:52Josh, 97.1.
00:53Josh, how you doing, buddy?
00:55Hey, what's going on, fellas?
00:56Happy Friday.
00:57Same to you, man.
00:57What's up?
00:59So, I think I'm kind of aligned with Kenny, but I think the game on Saturday, if we take
01:05down Boston, that's about all I need.
01:08I think there are some big differences between last year and this year.
01:13Two words.
01:14John Gibson.
01:15I was just going to say, Gibson's standing on his head.
01:17You know what I mean?
01:18So, as long as we got him in between the pipes, I think we really do got a chance.
01:22DeBrinckit played with a real edge last night.
01:25He wanted to win.
01:27And I think good things started in Calgary because, I mean, we just started getting pucks
01:31that were going in the net, right?
01:33And although, like, last night was a really tightly checked game and it felt like a playoff
01:38game, we still, I think, took advantage of the opportunity when it was there.
01:43So, I mean, as long as we, you know, like you said, mathematically, you know, we take
01:48care of Boston on Saturday.
01:49If Vegas likes it, I like it.
01:51And, again, I don't like us relying on Gibson playing as well as he is, but if the man's
01:58hot, you know, don't leave the table when you're on a heater, right?
02:00Well, he's playing arguably the best hockey of his career over an extended period of time.
02:04Now, Josh, here's the critical question because it's the more complicated one.
02:08Sir.
02:09Let's say they get in.
02:11What is your happiness versus frustration quotient?
02:15Like, man, I'm happy they're in, but damn it, why did it have to be this difficult in year
02:20seven?
02:21Um, the injuries play a big factor into that, right?
02:25Um, Larkin doesn't go down.
02:26Cop doesn't go down, you know, for, for that little bit of time that he was, you know, even
02:30Rasmussen, as much as people don't love him, you know what I mean?
02:33It's just, it is what it is.
02:34So it's hard for me to get really frustrated if we make it just because like you said,
02:39NHL, if, if you get in, you got a chance.
02:41So I'm just a happy fan, man.
02:43I've been a lifelong Red Wings fan.
02:44I can't get frustrated if we make the dance.
02:46Okay.
02:46No, Josh, you know why I'm asking and it's no, it's no judgment.
02:49I mean, it just, I, I want to know, and I, I wish I could be more like that.
02:54Maybe I would be, if I haven't done this for 25 years, I just, I do.
02:58I, I carry a frustration with my teams when it's like, man, you've, you've just, this
03:04has been a nightmare.
03:05Now what?
03:05You want me to give you a party hat and take a picture?
03:08Like, it's just, I wish I could be more like Josh.
03:11A little jaded.
03:12I get it.
03:13Very.
03:13It's okay.
03:14I'm getting there.
03:15That's why I look in the mirror.
03:16Herb Sendak.
03:17And I'm like, oh my God, I'm turning into Mike.
03:20No, Kyle, save yourself.
03:22You know how I'll, go ahead.
03:23Kyle, go ahead.
03:2497.
03:25One.
03:26Hey, thanks guys.
03:27Thanks for taking the call.
03:28Yes, sir.
03:29So I think it's going to take the next four games for me personally.
03:32Okay.
03:33Two of those games, two of those games are on Saturday and they're on national TV on ABC,
03:36which, you know, you get a whole national audience.
03:39So it's something to get excited for the team.
03:41They rally together knowing that the whole nation's going to be watching them.
03:45And also, you know, you got a chance to play Buffalo.
03:48You got a chance to play Ottawa.
03:49So you have some quality games and some quality TV times.
03:53And you're also going to be without Larkin, which could help make everybody feel more comfortable
03:59and make everybody believe more.
04:01And I want a few more games for the team to develop with the new guys we got at the
04:05trade deadline.
04:07You know, you look at some of them guys like Pran, they're playing their hearts out right now.
04:11They want to win.
04:11They came here to win.
04:12So then coming here to win is going to motivate guys like Dabrinkit and motivate these young guys like Finney
04:18to want to win and Sager to want to win.
04:20So I really think these next four games are really going to determine my belief and my, you know, positivity
04:28as if they're going to make it or not.
04:30All right.
04:30And your level, again, I'll ask you the same question I asked Josh, the happiness of finally getting it done
04:35versus the frustration of how long it took.
04:37If they get this done, I think there's going to be a lot of happiness, but, you know, not making
04:43excuses, but sports are a lot of excuses with injury and schedule.
04:46What not?
04:47We had, we had some injuries last couple of years towards the end, towards the end, which cost us a
04:51game or two, which ended up costing us the playoffs.
04:54So I see why things end up happening the way they did.
04:57We had some goaltendered issues, but I think it'll be a relief.
05:00I think it'll be finally like, okay, we're going in the right direction.
05:03That's a good word.
05:04We're teaching these young, we're teaching these right, these young guys what it's like to be a playoff team, what
05:08it's like to win.
05:09Like, I think like to, I think that's where I'd be at with like Michigan state football, where it's been
05:13like this wholly embarrassing experience, basically for seven, eight years.
05:17You had one blip of joy.
05:19Like if they were able to beat Michigan and let's say win eight or nine games, it wouldn't even be
05:24elation.
05:25It would be relief.
05:25Like, oh, so there is a pulse.
05:28Maybe we're headed back.
05:29Maybe we're getting somewhere.
05:32It's so, it's so tough to even find that relief for college football nowadays with, with the NLI that you
05:38may never get that relief anymore.
05:40There's going to be teams and there's going to be legacy and franchises that you might never make those.
05:45You know, what makes me sad is you're right.
05:47Thank you for that, Kyle.
05:49Because you're right.
05:50I know you're right.
05:51And it's, and it's part of Kyle is what we were talking about off the air.
05:55We haven't had a chance to do it on air because of what Herb Sendak did.
05:59And we're all collectively wearing his ball bag as a clown wig.
06:04It's a lot of these games are not good because these teams start over every year.
06:10There are very few teams where you keep continuity.
06:14Now state is one fine by and large.
06:17You're seeing it though.
06:18And like last night, case in point, Georgia quit.
06:22They quit because there's no buy-in.
06:24We're not going to be here next year.
06:26My agents already told me I got an offer from Houston.
06:29So it just.
06:30Or coaches already said, we're not bringing you back.
06:32Yeah.
06:33Like Will Wade.
06:33This is going to be the worst team we ever have.
06:36Uh, coach.
06:38What?
06:39I got rid of my boom box guy.
06:40I can get rid of you.
06:41Thank God.
06:44Or a con.
06:45How about get a job?
06:48He does have a job.
06:50Carrying a boom box.
06:51Yeah.
06:52Team bleephole.
06:53Let's go to Phil.
06:5497.1.
06:55Phil, how are you doing?
06:57I'm not too bad.
06:58What's going on, fellas?
06:59How are you doing?
06:59You tell me.
07:00What's the good word?
07:02Well, I mean, it's just nice that we're at March 20th and we're not talking in negative
07:09sense about, uh, you know, the, the streak of collapsing.
07:12It seems like we are going, like you're saying with Vegas, putting us at almost, uh, minus
07:18300, uh, borderline that for, uh, for the wings.
07:21It seems like the last couple of games that they've been playing, uh, inspired, uh, you
07:25know, being down a few guys.
07:27I'm not, and I'm not saying he's not good.
07:30Um, when it comes to Larkin, it's nice that some guys are stepping up and filling in for,
07:35uh, in his role, if you must.
07:37But, uh, I called, uh, I don't know, a week or so ago and I heard Stoney kind of laugh
07:42when I, uh, mentioned having Kane around in this, you know, maybe being like his, obviously
07:47his twilight years, but Kane's been, he's been on a tear the last week, week and a half.
07:51He's been contributing.
07:53Um, guys are stepping up, making plays.
07:55Obviously Gibson's playing lights out and I mean, big Mo Sider, that guy, I'm, I'm hoping
08:02he's one of those guys that's going to be around for quite some time in the wing wheel
08:05because he's, uh, he's a force back there.
08:07So it's, uh, the, the weather outside is suiting for, uh, my outlook for the rest of the season
08:13for the wings here.
08:14So let me ask you, same question, happiness versus relief.
08:20It's, uh, it's, it's relief.
08:23Um, I'm not expecting, I mean, any, like you guys said.
08:25Any team can get hot, you know, as playoffs go, uh, you might not have the best team
08:29on paper.
08:30You might not be the healthiest team, but when you got a guy like Gibson is playing his,
08:34uh, his best, you know, net mining, he's probably ever played in his career.
08:38I mean, you might, you might goalie somebody.
08:40How many times has that happened to wings over the last quarter of a century?
08:42You get goalied.
08:44Maybe you can goalie to goalie.
08:46I just feel it.
08:47It would be relief for me.
08:49It would not be happiness.
08:50It's your seven.
08:51It's taken too long.
08:52The pain of the last three years for me, it'd be relief.
08:55If, if you're happy, that's fine.
08:56I'm just, I'm trying to gauge it because it's been emotional warfare for the fans and
09:01this team.
09:02So just trying to figure it out.
09:06Yeah.
09:06You know, I just think we got, uh, we, we were spoiled, uh, you know, from the mid nineties
09:10into, uh, the 2010s with how competitive and our 25 years of consecutive making the playoffs.
09:16And then for it just to come to a screeching halt.
09:19And then we were like the basement teams.
09:21And, uh, that was a tough pill to swallow.
09:23So it's, uh, just nice to have some meaningful hockey, uh, some inspiring looking hockey.
09:28And it's, uh, that's the relief on it.
09:30I'm sure it's, I'm not a hundred percent satisfied because like you're saying, it did take substantially
09:37way too long for us to turn this around for the history of our team and what the organization,
09:42uh, is founded on.
09:43Um, obviously when owners, uh, when, when one passed away and it gets passed down to
09:49the, to the son or to the other family members that you see who, who was more serious about
09:54opening up the checkbook and bringing guys here to who's not.
09:57Well, see, hold on.
09:58There's a bit of a, and then Phil, look, there's a bit of a misnomer here.
10:01I mean, I hate to break it to you.
10:02I'm going to say it again.
10:03Don't put me in a position to defend ownership.
10:05It makes me feel dirty and we don't have a shower at work, but here we are.
10:09You know, no, you can put the blame on Steve Iserman.
10:11There's a salary cap.
10:13Yep.
10:13You spend money.
10:14He makes all the decisions.
10:15He wasn't taking the job without complete autonomy.
10:18He doesn't do some daily check-in.
10:20If you want to lay blame, you lay it right at the feet of laser beams.
10:24You don't need to invoke the owner or do this whole thing of, well, Mike Illich spent, yeah,
10:30there was no cap.
10:31Yeah.
10:31And I think it, but I think it's easier to blame the owner.
10:33I know, but I don't care about easy.
10:35It's also easy to, to follow when you're up three.
10:38There we go.
10:39Herb Sendak.
10:41I'd love to do an edit to his last name, but I'd get in trouble on a Friday.
10:46All I got to do is replace one easy letter and it would tell you what I think of that
10:49guy.
10:50Bendak?
10:50No, that's the wrong letter.
10:52Thank you, Vanna.
10:53Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97.
10:58We will get to the people.
11:00David on text communications.
11:01We'll have a tournament update for you in about 30 minutes.
11:03We got who said it lots to do on a Friday, 97 one.
