In a shocking murder case from Lucknow’s Mahanagar area, a 36-year-old woman and her lover have been arrested for allegedly killing her 69-year-old mother-in-law, who opposed their relationship.

The deceased, Nirmala Devi, was found dead at her residence in Nishatganj Gali No. 3 on Saturday afternoon. According to police, her hands and feet were tied with rope, and she was strangled to death.

The accused have been identified as Ranjana Verma and her lover Rajan Sharma (21), an Ola taxi driver who had been living as a tenant in the same house. Police said the two were in a relationship for nearly four years, which had led to frequent disputes within the family.

How the Crime Unfolded
Investigations revealed that the accused deliberately switched off the CCTV cameras inside the house between 2 pm and 4 pm to avoid suspicion. During this time, they allegedly tied up Nirmala Devi and strangled her, reportedly using a saree. They also attempted to mislead investigators by later turning the CCTV back on remotely using a mobile phone and fleeing the scene.

Around 4 pm, the victim’s grandson, Aditya (18), returned home and found his grandmother lying unconscious with her hands and legs bound. He raised an alarm and informed his father and mother. Fearing suspicion, Ranjana and Rajan returned home and staged a robbery narrative.

Ranjana reportedly began crying and claimed that unknown persons had entered the house, robbed valuables, and killed her mother-in-law.

Police Investigation and Arrests
However, inconsistencies emerged during the investigation. CCTV footage from outside the house showed Ranjana leaving with Rajan during the crucial period. A sniffer dog also reportedly led police towards Rajan, raising further suspicion.

Upon interrogation, Rajan allegedly confessed to the crime, stating that they planned the murder as Nirmala Devi opposed their relationship and had recently argued with Ranjana.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s son, Tridesh Verma, police registered an FIR against both accused. They were arrested and sent to jail on Sunday.

SHO Metropolitan Akhilesh Mishra confirmed that the murder was premeditated, and further investigation is underway. Police have also recovered evidence and are probing additional aspects, including the alleged theft of ornaments.

The incident has sent shockwaves in the locality, with residents expressing concern over the brutality of the crime.
