00:01Greetings, this is Lord British, and welcome to the Shroud of the Avatar Forsaken Virtue's six-month progress video.
00:08We're going to start our tour in Kingsport Village on the Isle of Lost Vale.
00:14Players here will find not only a picturesque waterfront village, but a place where they too can call home, both
00:21with lots on the seaside.
00:23You can see here, as we fly by, you can see some of those lots marked out with buoys, as
00:29well as plots they can build their village homes right here on the shore of this very picturesque village.
00:37And player property, player ownership, we think is one of the major features, major attractions of Shroud of the Avatar,
00:43but that also means that it needs to be one of the fairly early and important choices.
00:48There went by a for-sale sign on a couple of those lots there.
00:52We think that, you know, getting into the game early and finding the place that you wish to call home
00:58will be a particularly fun part of your visit to the game.
01:02And I think that here, Kingsport Village, will be a popular destination for our players.
01:09We're going to take you back now into the town of Owl's Head.
01:12You got a brief glimpse of this in our three-month video, but now we've built out the entire town.
01:18This is much larger than Kingsport, and you can see what we're doing here, too, is we're fading in and
01:24out all the player housing to give you a glimpse of what it might have looked like, you know, at
01:29the beginning of the game or later after players have come.
01:32We just flew over a minute ago that wooden outer wall, the barrier of the palisades, and we're into the
01:38merchant area.
01:39We'll come down to these major crafting areas that we'll revisit a bit later.
01:43There's Fire Lotus's Tavern we've just flown over.
01:46And here are these fortified walls of the inner city, which is not only where the seat of government is
01:52kept here in greater protection, but also these very large city lots.
01:56And here you can see fading in some of the city houses that people have either earned or could buy
02:02in game.
02:03And you can see, you know, not only is this much more fortress-like and fortified, but the kinds of
02:11homes and businesses you'll find here at the core of these bigger cities is much more elaborate than you might
02:17find in some of the outlying villages.
02:19So depending on what your preference is of city life or country life, you can choose either a place like
02:26Kingsport or a place like Owl's Head.
02:29But we'll get a chance to visit some of these homes now next.
02:32In fact, on our tour of homes, our first stop is the Eidelmann House.
02:36This is a one-story, one-room, one-story, plaster-and-wood-based, kind of Germanic-themed house that we
02:44actually especially made for our German backers a few months back.
02:49Our second stop is the Viking House.
02:52It has a very strong Nordic influence with a large, open wooden structure.
02:58And it also has, if you look around there, you can see that staircase that goes up to a second
03:02-floor loft.
03:03And in fact, this is also the first player house that you can find in our add-on store that
03:08you can purchase separately in addition to those that we've been giving out to the original backers of the game.
03:16Now we'll switch over and let's take a peek at the Wizard's Tower.
03:21Now the Wizard's Tower is a magically-themed player house.
03:25And in fact, you can see that even from here at the beginning, you can see the front steps are
03:29kind of floating up on their own.
03:31And when you step inside, you can see that it's clear that a magician has helped build this two-story
03:38tower, including a teleporting device to get up to the upper rooms.
03:43And so when you decide to leave and go upstairs here through this teleporter, when you arrive on the upper
03:49floor, you see three large rooms.
03:52In fact, on top of the tower, you not only have this big outer balcony, but side rooms that in
03:58this case the player has decorated like a small bedroom, and on the other side, a small office.
04:03By the way, it's worth noting that the doors have all been removed from these player houses for this demonstration
04:10purposes,
04:10just so we could more speedily and visually move through these scenes for this demonstration.
04:20Now after the Wizard's Tower, we're going to take you over to the Druid House.
04:24And what's cool about the Druid House is it's sort of like a stone building that has been overgrown and
04:30enveloped by a very large mystical tree.
04:34In this case, you can see you have a very large first-floor room built out of stone on the
04:38interior.
04:40And if we go back outside, instead of having a stairway case on the inside, on the outside, we have
04:46built a ramp area.
04:49So you can go up really through the tree itself to the upper floor.
04:54And in this case, you can see we really have quite a bit of space by building those exterior staircases.
05:00We have reserved, even in a relatively small home, quite a bit of space for you to decorate and make
05:07your own.
05:10Now we'll move on to the town tower, as we call it.
05:15This is actually the largest of the townhomes we currently offer.
05:18It not only has this large main grand entry floor, but a grand staircase as well
05:26that will take you up to the upper floor.
05:29And in addition to having these very tall ceilings and these very tall rooms,
05:35plenty of room here to decorate.
05:37But in this case, the townhomes also has an outer balcony
05:42where you can get a nice view over the village serfs who might live nearby.
05:49And in addition to the upper two floors of the townhomes tower,
05:54if we come back down here through the grand staircase,
05:57you may have noticed there's a staircase that actually goes downwards.
06:00And this takes you to a lower floor of this house,
06:04which in this case has been decorated as an alchemist lab.
06:08And you can also see that this player has recovered the throne of bones
06:12from a previous adventure that you may have seen
06:14that they've decorated with as well.
06:17Now we're going to see the Lord's House.
06:19This was a backer reward to our Lord and above backers.
06:23This fits on a...
06:24It is a very large home, actually, that fits on a town-sized lot.
06:28It's about two and a half stories.
06:30It's very large, has very high ceilings.
06:33As you can see, in this case on the main floor,
06:35we've got plenty of room to set this up as a living room, dining room.
06:39It has an outer balcony on this floor.
06:41One of my favorite parts of this one, though, is the roof.
06:44It's got a very open roof.
06:46In this case, we've got a cooking station up top.
06:50Now we are looking at the Lord of the Manor Keep.
06:54This is for our highest level of backers, the Lords of the Manor.
06:58This largest building is really, truly expansive.
07:03It completely fills a city-sized lot.
07:07There are numerous rooms, vast amounts of room to decorate.
07:13In fact, these are so large that the early houses that you saw in the game,
07:19such as that Eidelman house, would fit inside most of the rooms of this house.
07:25Not only that, but we think that this is likely one of,
07:29if not the largest player structure offered out to players as a personal homestead
07:38in a role-playing game.
07:40But in any case, I think that any Lord of the Manor should be pleased and proud
07:46to have a building or a homestead, a keep of this scale.
07:51You can see here on this floor, you know, in fact,
07:53that's large enough to have a private chapel that would seat 50 or 100 of your closest friends.
08:02And so I think that, again, the amount of space there would be bountiful.
08:09In addition to these larger lots and home sizes,
08:13players can expand their holdings by building down.
08:17This, what we're running into here, is one of the two-story basements.
08:21You'll, by the way, notice that we're running around for the first time here as our female avatar.
08:27This two-story stone basement comes as a reward for some of our backer levels.
08:33This one happens to be decked out.
08:34This floor is decked out as a crafting area.
08:36But, like I mentioned, it's a two-story basement,
08:39so we can go take a peek downstairs before we run off to another basement.
08:45This one is a large town-sized timber and stone basement.
08:52Here you can see, you know, a larder on this floor.
08:57As well as, if I go downstairs,
09:01you can see that it is kind of decked out as a tavern up top
09:05and a magical library down here on the lower floor.
09:09This one here is also a city-sized timber and stone-style basement.
09:16Its upper floor, in this case, is decked out as a library.
09:20You can see, again, with these larger lot sizes,
09:24the truly, you know, large amounts of space that is available.
09:30And so we think that players who want extra space in their homesteads
09:35will find these basements to be a great addition.
09:39We're going to go on to home decoration.
09:41We're back out in front of our knight's house in Owl's Head.
09:44You may remember from earlier demos.
09:46And, of course, you can not only decorate inside your house, but outdoors.
09:50You can see where you can sit in the chair outside by this crafting area that we have created.
09:55And we're going to sneak around the back of this house
09:57to an area you may have seen also in a previous video
10:00where we have some of the art created for one of our backers called the Harry Man.
10:05He made these great bedding rolls and such, the tents and things.
10:11This guillotine that, of course, we can pick up and take with us
10:15and perhaps take the town square and see if we can put it to use.
10:22As we head over to go inside, you know, if I want,
10:25you can begin to even take stacks of objects
10:27and, you know, not just set objects around, but start to build stacks of objects.
10:32You know, on the interior here of the home,
10:35lots of things I could interact with and move around,
10:38including the wall decoration.
10:40So, you know, like, can I adjust their position?
10:43But, for example, if I grab this picture on the wall,
10:46I can not only move it, but you can see that as I move it across the room,
10:50it tries to realign itself to match the surface.
10:56Additionally, here on the floor, of course, you know, I can move the carpet.
11:00But over in these bookcases, you'll notice that these books
11:03are actually individual books that have been set on those bookcases.
11:06And so I can actually move the full bookcase
11:09with all the books on the case itself.
11:12And they move as a unit in a parent-child type relationship,
11:16which also then means I can move the carpet under the bookcase
11:19and the bookcase will come with it.
11:21It means I can add the barrel on top of the carpet
11:24and now they all move as a unit.
11:26And yet, as you can see, they're all still individual pieces.
11:28I can drag a book off that bookcase that was in that stack.
11:31We think that the decorating system will provide a great deal of entertainment for our backers.
11:40Back on the streets of Owl's Head, let's wander around the town
11:44and see if we can find some people to talk to.
11:46In this case, you can see I've walked up to a guard.
11:50And as we've demonstrated before, we have a natural language conversation system.
11:55So instead of clicking on menu items or just speaking keywords,
12:00you can actually speak in full sentences
12:03and the game will pull out of your conversation and what you've typed.
12:09It'll search for things that the guard might be able to respond to
12:13even if typed in fairly complex sentences and even multiple sentences
12:18and make sure that the guard tries to keep up with,
12:21the guard in this case, tries to keep up with what you're talking about.
12:25And you can also see that we're beginning to see the storyline unfold
12:30as the guard is expressing some skepticism and concern about my claim
12:37to have come not from New Britannia, but in fact, a distant place called Earth
12:42as they've heard prophecies of bad things for people who make that type of representation.
12:49You can see also here we're going to chat with this little stable boy
12:52who's taking care of some of the animals down here
12:53and he, as you can see, might be a little bit of a simpleton
12:59and so it seems unlikely that I will get the kinds of information out of him
13:04that I will need to advance the plot particularly well
13:08although I too like bees and think Arabella is pretty.
13:13But let's move on now to this crafting area
13:17As you know, crafting is critical to Shroud of the Avatar
13:21We really want a vibrant player economy
13:24where most of the equipment in-game that you'll find will be player-created
13:30including not just combat equipment
13:32but even the tools and things required for crafting
13:34and the interconnection between those crafting disciplines
13:37we want to make as strong as possible too.
13:39And the crafting is broken up into really three phases
13:42gathering ingredients, refining those ingredients
13:44and then producing a final product
13:46In this case, we've just taken some iron ingots that we'd already smelted
13:53We used a sword blank to cast a sword for later blacksmithing
13:58We're now going to take two more iron ingots
14:01that iron bars that we had already smelted
14:03We're going to use a sheet mold
14:05and what we get out of that is an iron sheet
14:07which we can later use to make a breastplate
14:10So now I'll take my molds back
14:12I'll leave the smelting station
14:14and instead I'll move over to the blacksmith station
14:19And when we go over here to the blacksmith station
14:22one of the first things I'll pull out onto the table
14:25in addition to those blanks
14:26is the smithing hammer
14:28that I can use to kind of bang these things into shape
14:33I pulled out a hilt that I had made previously
14:35and now I can craft a sword out of that
14:38which I can immediately put to use as a player
14:42Additionally, I can still use the hammer
14:44a sheet of metal
14:47and some leather straps
14:49and I'm going to try to make a breastplate here to wear
14:51but you'll notice that since the breastplate requires
14:54leather straps to hold all the parts and pieces together
14:56I would have had to have acquired
14:59the leather strapping from a tanner
15:02to be able to put to use here in creating armor
15:06that now with my freshly made sword
15:08my freshly made armor
15:10I can go out and do something really heroic
15:11like kill off one of these chickens
15:14on the streets of the village
15:15I probably did not do too much for my virtue
15:18by doing that
15:19Now we've stepped out into a prison
15:22that can be found beneath Al's Head
15:25affectionately known as the clink
15:28and you can see I've dressed a bit like the guards
15:30to see if I might be able to sneak in here
15:31but as you can tell
15:34they saw through my disguise
15:35and still have allowed me to go and do some exploring
15:38here in the city prison
15:40You also might see the little glowing moat around me
15:43a little light spell that it's helping me see
15:45and I peek over this little vantage point
15:47down into the prison labor crafting area
15:50and off now into the warden's room
15:53where he has been
15:55obviously keeping an eye
15:57on the prisoners as well
15:58but looky there
15:59I snuck through a little illusory wall
16:01in the back of his office
16:02that was there to let him make a quick escape
16:06and or through another illusory wall here
16:08so we can get over into
16:09the prison area
16:13the prisoner holding areas
16:15and so now I'm sort of backstage
16:17you might say in the prison
16:19probably an area where I'm really not supposed to be
16:21in fact down here is the cell blocks
16:24and I can hear a bit of a commotion
16:25going on down the hall from me
16:29let's see if I can figure out what that is
16:33here's where that sounds coming from
16:34and sure enough
16:36this is a kobold
16:37that has apparently escaped from the prison
16:39the guards are here trying to subdue him
16:41and so I think if I help out these guards
16:43get on their good side
16:45and that might help me
16:48in the future quests I have
16:50and negotiations I have
16:51with these folks down here in the clink
16:54and the clink is one of the places
16:55where we're really trying to make sure
16:57that every time you come back
16:58it's a new experience down there
17:00in that little dungeon underneath the city
17:03now we're back outside
17:04in the surrounding forest
17:06and as you can see
17:07this is our first good view
17:09of this female avatar
17:12let's head out into the woods
17:13and see if we might find some
17:16be able to gather some meat
17:17or some hides for crafting
17:20and as I search out here in the woods
17:23this is one of the first old growth forests
17:25we've built
17:26and sure enough out here in the woods
17:27here's a pack of wolves
17:28you know that might
17:29a good wolf pelt might be something of value
17:32so let me first fire off a fireball
17:35and pull out a dagger here
17:36and again this is the first prototype of combat
17:39this will be refined greatly in the months to come
17:42but you can kind of see where we're heading there
17:44with the first combats
17:45in this case here is a bear
17:48I've used a little bit of lightning on this bear
17:50and a little bit of heavier weapon
17:51in this case a mace
17:52and see if I can't take down this bear
17:57and sure enough I still can
17:59and I've also heard that out in these woods
18:01that there are some satyrs
18:03who have been hunting in these forests too
18:06and harassing a lot of the humans
18:08that have been out here
18:10and sure enough there are some of these satyrs
18:12and since I've been sent on a quest
18:14to kind of either run them off
18:15or kind of see
18:17deal with the fact that they're here
18:19kind of encroaching on human lands
18:21I'll fire fireball this guy as well
18:23and as you can see
18:25he is upset with me
18:26not only fighting with me
18:27but kind of extolling
18:29the fact that they think
18:30these are their woods
18:32and that we're encroaching on them
18:33and so sure enough
18:35that may be a deeper story
18:37that I'll have to work on here
18:40in the months to come
18:45all right
18:45now we are down in a cavern
18:48that we found in that forest
18:49and this is the first example
18:51I think you've seen
18:52of things being built
18:53with our cavern set
18:56now in this particular
18:57set of caverns
18:59in addition to it
19:00being built with the natural cavern set
19:02you can see that
19:03this one has become inhabited
19:05and it looks like
19:06it's an inhabitation for kobolds
19:08and so since they are
19:10one of our biggest enemies
19:11here in this game
19:13you know here we are
19:15having a little bit of a combat
19:16with these kobolds
19:18but you can see
19:19that they have been setting up shop
19:21in here for quite some time
19:23again don't forget
19:24this is just early
19:25prototypical combat
19:27we'll see a great many refinements
19:29in that here over time
19:31yet you can see that
19:33you know down here in this cave
19:36you know in addition to the tunnel set
19:39and some of the natural lighting
19:41that torch sconces
19:43and you know other
19:45you know traditional habitation
19:48activities have begun
19:49to take place here in this cavern
19:52on the other hand
19:53you know here is another natural cave
19:55that you know
19:57while it is not
19:58currently inhabited by people
20:00you can see that it might have been
20:01in the past
20:01inhabited by some miners
20:03a few signs of
20:05previous
20:07inhabitation
20:08a few of the glowing mushrooms
20:10around
20:10and look
20:11lo and behold
20:12this cave is now
20:13occupied by bears
20:14and since bears are our mortal enemy
20:17apparently
20:18we better here
20:19dispatch this bear
20:20if we can
20:21and try to
20:23rid these caves
20:24of the plague of bears
20:26our final combat area
20:28to show you today
20:29is the dragon fields
20:30now out here in this open area
20:32not only is there a dragon
20:34to worry about
20:35who's causing these fires
20:36and shooting fireballs
20:37down at me
20:38but there's also
20:39this overturned kobold cart
20:41which could represent
20:42a great time
20:42a great opportunity
20:43for looting
20:44but I'll also have to defend myself
20:46against the kobolds here
20:48who are trying to protect
20:49the remaining
20:50parts of their spoils
20:52and so
20:53as you can see
20:54you know
20:55the dragon is
20:56both firing fireballs at me
20:57as well as the kobolds
20:59so this will be a pretty dangerous place
21:00if I want to
21:01deal with it
21:02so there you go
21:03there is our
21:04six month demonstration
21:05of Lord British's
21:06shroud of the avatar
21:08forsaken virtues
21:10now we couldn't end
21:11without showing off
21:13some of the results
21:14of the amazing
21:15scene jams
21:16that you all
21:17have been
21:18competing in
21:19and contributing to
21:20as all of you know
21:22we're not just
21:23developing this project
21:24on our own
21:26we're not just
21:27developing it with you
21:27as contributors
21:28to the project
21:29in advance
21:30of its release
21:32but many of you
21:33are contributing art
21:34directly into the game
21:35or now competing
21:36in these scene jams
21:37and these scene jams
21:39are allowing us
21:40to you know
21:40not only discover
21:41new techniques
21:42that many of you
21:43are experimenting with
21:44and showing us
21:46but a lot of the times
21:47you guys are creating levels
21:48that are you know
21:49almost immediately
21:52able to be dropped
21:53into the game
21:54as scenes
21:55as experiences
21:56for us to use
21:57you know
21:58almost as is
21:59and for us
22:01that's just exceptionally exciting
22:02to find that level
22:03of talent
22:04in the community
22:04and the winners
22:06of this scene jam
22:07and this was the second
22:08week scene jam
22:09the winners
22:10you know
22:11created this
22:11incredibly compelling
22:13environment
22:13where just moving
22:15through it
22:15and seeing how
22:16they use the props
22:17and the lighting
22:18and the objects
22:20really told a deep story
22:22and they built a lot
22:23of their own
22:23custom scripts
22:24and objects
22:26and it really
22:28feels a lot
22:29like we hoped
22:31that we would find
22:31and frankly
22:33it exceeded our hopes
22:34you know
22:35with the level
22:36of quality
22:37and sophistication
22:38and storytelling
22:39and mood
22:40that went into this scene
22:42so really
22:43our deep thanks
22:45and our deep gratitudes
22:47to those of you
22:48who built
22:50such amazing levels
22:51and contributed them
22:51into our week two
22:53scene jam
22:57now our week three
22:59scene jam
22:59was to make a village
23:01which could be
23:01a significant
23:02to the trickier challenge
23:04to make them good
23:06and again
23:09creating villages
23:10and
23:11and
23:11habitations
23:12with story
23:13was one of our
23:13big criteria
23:14having a sense
23:16of pace
23:17and flow
23:18and our winners
23:19in this case
23:20you know
23:20completely rocked it
23:22you know
23:23the fact that they
23:24you know
23:25created spaces
23:26that not only
23:27lived up to
23:28to our needs
23:29from a
23:30being able to make it
23:32occupiable
23:33by player housing
23:35the ability
23:36for there
23:37to be a sense
23:37of story
23:38like in this case
23:39you could really tell
23:40that this village
23:41had been
23:42had seen some trouble
23:44of late
23:44and had hastily built
23:45these fortifications
23:47to keep out
23:47the bad guys
23:48you know
23:49you could really
23:50see it
23:50and feel it
23:51as you move
23:52through the space
23:54and then
23:55you know
23:56on the interior
23:56of the space
23:57these
23:59these areas
24:00were
24:00very much
24:02like
24:03we would like
24:04to find
24:04in the towns
24:06that
24:06that we build
24:07and
24:08and then finally
24:09of course
24:09our winners
24:10again
24:11you know
24:11not only crafted
24:12an amazingly
24:12detailed
24:13environment
24:15but
24:15I know
24:16I'm sounding
24:17like I'm repeating
24:17myself
24:18but told a really
24:18great story
24:19visually
24:19and
24:22in this case
24:24you know
24:24we could
24:25travel around
24:27this town
24:29you could see
24:30the sense of story
24:31as you move up the hill
24:32move through the levels
24:33of fortifications
24:34to get into this town
24:36and one of the things
24:37we were most excited about
24:39was how not only
24:40did we have
24:40the daytime scene
24:42of this village
24:44but they actually
24:45transitioned
24:46into having
24:49both a day cycle
24:50and a nighttime cycle
24:52which provided
24:53a great opportunity
24:55for
24:55moodiness
24:57and
24:57special effects
24:58opportunities
24:59as we move
25:00through
25:01at night
25:02where they had
25:03you know
25:04not only
25:04the wind
25:05in the trees
25:07but the clouds
25:08and lightning
25:09and
25:10blowing dust
25:11and debris
25:12really added
25:13a sense
25:14of mood
25:15and story
25:16that we were
25:17you know
25:18extraordinarily
25:19impressed by
25:20learned a great deal
25:21ourselves from
25:22and again
25:23we're so thankful
25:25that we have
25:26such an amazingly
25:27talented community
25:28working with us
25:29here in the creation
25:30of Shroud of the Avatar
25:31I sure hope
25:33you've liked
25:34what you've seen
25:35we're pretty pleased
25:36with our progress
25:36so far
25:36we're exceptionally proud
25:38of the support
25:39we've been getting
25:40from our community
25:41so thank you very much
