00:01Hi everybody and welcome to this extended let's play of Divinity Dragon Commander.
00:06We're going to be playing the beta today and we're going to do one turn in the single player campaign.
00:11Now before delving into the footage of that turn, I wanted to show you once again what Dragon Commander is
00:18all about
00:18and we'll do that by showing you a new version of a trailer which we released a couple of months
00:23ago.
00:30Welcome recruit to the Dragon Commander Academy.
00:34Sit down and listen up for you've a long way to go yet before you'll be worthy of your title.
00:40Now on your ship you'll be surrounded by princesses, politicians and other assorted parasites.
00:48Listen to their advice but don't let them manipulate you.
00:52You are the commander, not them.
00:54Don't forget your studies of the art of war and don't neglect the benefits of new technologies.
01:01Play your cards right and outsmart your enemies by moving your armies about with great military cunning.
01:08When in battle yourself, close coordination between your land, air and sea forces is imperative.
01:17You have at your disposal formidable forces, but screw up and we'll all end up as demons chewing toys.
01:25So think and strategize to win the day.
01:29Oh, and by the by, since you're a dragon after all, do use your arsenal of unique powers from time
01:36to time.
01:37Nothing like a barrage of searing fireballs to seal the deal.
01:41Well, and in case you need practice, and you will, you can always take on other dragon knights to hone
01:49your skills.
01:50You probably won't last much longer than the others.
01:53But perhaps you'll surprise us and lead us to victory.
01:58Give it a shot, why don't you?
02:02Larian Studios presents Divinity Dragon Commander.
02:11Hi, ladies and gentlemen.
02:13My name is Sven Linke.
02:15I am the founder and creative director of Larian Studios.
02:17And my job today is to take you through a turn of Divinity Dragon Commander.
02:22So I'm playing the single player campaign.
02:24I'm in turn five right now.
02:26I'm playing the beta version of the game.
02:28So it's not 100% finished yet.
02:30So you'll see some things which are unpolished or unfinished, but it should give you a good idea.
02:34So at the beginning of each turn, you see what the media thinks of you in the form of this
02:42paper, The Rivalent Times.
02:43And right now it's telling me that I'm moderately popular amongst the imps, undeads, and dwarves,
02:49but I'm not that popular among the elves and lizards.
02:53That has everything to do with the fact that I made certain political decisions which the elves and lizards didn't
02:58really like.
02:59Like, for instance, I voted for introducing conscription, which is meaning that I'm going to get extra manpower each turn,
03:09but by obliging every single man to join the army.
03:14Now, I also have a typical tabloid headline, which tells me that one of my generals told me to stuff
03:20it,
03:20which is actually true, and that also has to do with the decision which I took in the previous turn.
03:24But we'll see a couple of examples of that, so I won't explain what decision that was, actually.
03:30You can see that I've also gained a card from the previous turn.
03:33So cards are like a form of favors, and these favors can be used to your advantage in combat.
03:40In this particular case, I received a card which is going to weaken an enemy's shamans.
03:45And shamans are a kind of a medical unit, a healing unit,
03:48so I will be able to shoot the enemy's shamans faster when I play this card.
03:54And that's the only card that I received this turn.
03:56So here we have my general Edmund, who wants to talk to me, I think.
04:02But let me first explain where I am.
04:03I'm in the war room of the Raven.
04:05The Raven is my capital ship, and I use it to navigate over the world as I wage war on
04:12my siblings,
04:13because I am the dragon commander, I am a dragon knight who can turn myself into a dragon,
04:18and I have a rather formidable fleet at my disposal.
04:22So what do we see here?
04:24Here, well, this is the turn I'm in.
04:27Here we see the amount of gold that I'm gaining per turn,
04:31and how much gold I have in total.
04:34Here we're seeing how many research points I have,
04:37which will allow me to research new technology,
04:39and that's me, obviously.
04:41So at the bottom of the screen, I see a navigation bar,
04:44which allows me to go from room to room.
04:45Currently the four rooms are unlocked.
04:48So I can, for instance, go to the bar,
04:50I can go to the engineering bay,
04:52the royal chambers,
04:54and then the council room is closed for the moment,
04:58and this room will become my princess room,
05:01where I will get to go once I have a princess abortorship.
05:05But for that I need to become wealthier,
05:07more famous,
05:09and definitely more powerful.
05:11So let's have a look at what Edmund has to say.
05:13Are they not truly the lowliest of all the races?
05:15Were it not for the hint of demon cunning in their blood,
05:18we most probably wouldn't speak to them as much as...
05:20Okay, so Edmund,
05:22who is a bit of a racist,
05:24and thinks very highly of himself.
05:27He is telling me a story here.
05:33Yes, involves him having to participate in an impish ritual.
05:40Now, Edmund hates the other species explicitly,
05:44so he only thinks that lizards should be allowed to survive,
05:48so that obviously is going to be a painful thing for him.
05:54and my very reason for carrying your draconic benevolence at this hour.
05:58Obviously, in a movie like this you're going to see a couple of spoilers,
06:02but don't worry,
06:03there's really a lot of decisions like this in the game,
06:05so one spoiler more or less will not make a very big difference,
06:09because A, these situations are served to you randomly when you're playing the game,
06:14and B, there's really a lot of them.
06:16So, what am I going to tell him?
06:18Well, you know what, I'm going to give him a break, actually.
06:21I mean, let's see if Edmund likes me,
06:23because I'm a dragon,
06:24I'll lend him my Signet Ring,
06:27and that should help him out, I guess, right?
06:31The most salubrious solution, Commander.
06:33Well, it seems to momentarily please him,
06:35and we'll see how it works out in the next turn, undoubtedly.
06:39Okay, so let's have a look at what else we have here,
06:42so I can access the bar,
06:44where I have my other generals here,
06:47so I can, for instance, I can talk to Prospera here.
06:50A couple of my generals are actually missing,
06:52so I don't know where they are.
06:53They must be on a mission somewhere.
06:54Fie upon Edmund, Pride Commander.
06:56The Lizard Lords have granted him the honor of representing...
06:59Yeah, so she's talking about Edmund's issue.
07:04She would like him to go to the imp ceremony,
07:06so she's not going to be very happy about what I decided,
07:08but she doesn't know yet.
07:10Let's go to the engineering bay, where I have my friend Grimio.
07:13How's that jetpack working out for you, my lord?
07:16I knew he'd like it.
07:20So he's the guy who gave me all kind of technology.
07:23He gave me a jetpack, which works wonderfully well.
07:27He's one of the guys where I can spend all of my research points.
07:32So, for instance, here I have already researched Grenadiers, Troopers, Hunters,
07:40which are like a jeep unit, I guess.
07:43Transporters, which allow me to bring my troops overseas.
07:47And I upgraded my Troopers with Enhanced Engines,
07:50which allowed them to go at up to 160% of their original speed.
07:54So, and they're fairly fast, so that's a good idea.
07:57So now I have to decide what I'm going to spend my 10 research points on.
08:02And I can spend five.
08:03All of these things cost me five research points.
08:06And this is a higher tier of technology,
08:09for which I will be spending 10 research points.
08:11And then there's an even higher tier,
08:13with cool things like Bomber Balloons and Ironclads.
08:15and really very nice upgrades.
08:20And then there's an even higher tier,
08:23which cost me 20 research points.
08:25But even more stuff like teleportation for my Hunters, for instance.
08:29Unfortunately, I only have 10,
08:30so I'll have to look at the lower side of the technology tree.
08:34And I'm going to give my Grenadiers Imp Binoculars.
08:37And this will increase their attack range.
08:39And Grenadiers are like a Bazooka unit,
08:41so increased range will help me, protect me from attacks from the skies,
08:45and attacks from mechanized units with fairly cheap cannon fodder, actually.
08:53So I can select to start research, and that's going to cost me five research points.
08:58Or I can buy the research right away, which would cost me 10.
09:02But I'm just going to select the five.
09:04And then next turn I'm going to have my Binoculars.
09:08So I'm going to finish talking to Grumio and go to the Royal Chambers,
09:12where I have my trusted friend Maxos, who is kind of a wizard.
09:28So I'm going to ask him to research stuff for me.
09:32And I have five research points left, and I can spend them on my dragon skills.
09:37So I already acquired two skills, Breaching Fire and Aura of Restoration.
09:41The Aura of Restoration is pretty cool.
09:42If I float over units with my dragon, they get healed automatically.
09:47And this skill here is a skill that allows me to do more damage to dragons, medium and heavy units.
09:54So I don't use it when I'm dealing with troopers or Grenadiers,
09:57but I use it when I'm dealing with things like Hunters or Armors or Juggernauts or Ironclads and so forth.
10:03So what I'm going to do is I'm going to get myself the Aura of Annihilation on top of my
10:13Aura of Restoration.
10:15Because it's a permanent Aura, and my units are going to be doing more damage when I'm near them.
10:20So that's also going to be something that I'm going to get in the next turn.
10:23So eventually you finish talking to everybody, decide what technology you're going to research,
10:28what you're going to get for your dragon, and then you go to your strategy map,
10:34which basically introduce another face in the game.
10:38So this is the small island for which we're currently fighting.
10:43It's been a bit of a fight already, but I mean, I've only spent five turns.
10:49I started with this place here and already captured these three areas, and this is going to be my moment.
10:55I think that I'm going to hurt the AI here, who does have quite a lot of troops in these
11:01territories here,
11:02but there's a couple of neutral territories here, these two islands,
11:05and I'm going to make a go for at least this island, and on that island there's an armor,
11:10which is new technology, which I don't have yet, and I will be able to capture it.
11:15So what I'm going to do is I have my trooper here, which has its enhanced engines, as you can
11:19see,
11:20and I'm going to load it into its transporter, and I'm going to move this transporter to this island here,
11:27and I'm going to unload my unit here, and next turn this place is going to become mine,
11:34because the neutral units are not going to attack me, they're just going to become mine.
11:37So that's going to give me an extra island, with an extra building on top of it, and with two
11:43extra units.
11:44So units have move points, and this was a two-move point move, so I had my transporter went one,
11:50two,
11:51but guys like these, for instance, only have one transport, one move point,
11:55so if I'm going to move these troopers, I'm going to attack this area here, got six units,
12:02they are going to manage to go there, but they wouldn't be able to, for instance, go over here,
12:08because they only have one move point. So let's see, my chance to win currently is 34%,
12:15as you can see here on this country bar, and I'm going to try to increase my chance to win
12:21by adding more units.
12:23So I'm going to send these hunters here, into the country, which increases my chance to win to 43%, which
12:29is pretty good.
12:30And then these hunters, these hunters have two movement points also, so one, two, I can add them to my
12:36stack.
12:36So I got a 50% chance, so we even the odds, and the enemy has hunters, but they don't
12:42have any upgrades, so that's good.
12:43He has an equal amount of troops, but they don't have any upgrades either, and then he has grenadiers, which
12:50have enhanced explosives.
12:53That's not cool. So that's going to hurt, I mean, they're going to do extra area damage, and then there's
12:58also a transport here,
13:00which he used to bring those units to this country. And there's a factory here, so this is an interesting
13:05building,
13:06because where there is a factory, you can build extra units. So talking about building units, I can buy units,
13:13in my capital country, so I've got hunters, grenadiers, transporters, and troopers at my disposal.
13:20And as you research technology, you get more and more units, and each of these units become more versatile
13:26over the course of the campaign. We're here very early in chapter one of the main campaign.
13:33So I'm going to build, I guess I'm going to go for fast-moving units, hunters.
13:43So in the next turn I will be able to move them one, two, should I need to resupply, I
13:46will have to take care of this area here,
13:48because they'll most likely try to invade it with these guys, or he's going to reinforce it.
13:54I'm going to think he's going to reinforce it. So we know what I'm going to do, I'm going to
13:59move these guys into this transporter here,
14:02and I'm going to move this transporter over here, and then I'm going to unload it, and further increase my
14:09alts to 58%,
14:11but that's still not enough, but it's going to be sufficient for the moment.
14:16So once I finish doing all of my moves, I can end my turn, which is what I'm going to
14:21do now,
14:22and then you see a summary of my moves, and then you see what the enemy is moving, which is
14:27interesting,
14:28because I made some assumptions about his progress, or her progress for this matter.
14:34And then you see a battle overview, so there was no attack here, I expected one, or I was afraid
14:40of one,
14:41but actually the enemy decided to reinforce this area, and it's probably going to have an interesting battle here.
14:49my chance to win low, it went lower, from 53 to 51%, as a result of an enemy action, so
14:56yeah, well,
14:58I mean, we'll just have to go for it, so I'll go to battle, and so now I have a
15:02choice.
15:04I get asked who will lead the battle, so I can send one of my generals, like for instance our
15:08Edmund fellow here,
15:10he would make my chance to win 55%, but Henry would make it 58%, so this is clear,
15:16is a battle in which Henry would have a higher chance, and Scarlet would have 57%, and Catherine 51%.
15:23Now, I could also just leave it up to the army, which in this particular case would leave it at
15:2851%,
15:30but I can also go to battle in dragon form. Now, typically each turn in the main campaign gets you
15:39to fight on multiple fronts, and you can only be present as a dragon on one front, so you would
15:42have
15:43to select in which battle do I want to be a dragon, and then you would have to select where
15:46do I place
15:47my generals. So we're dealing with quite a lot of enemy activity, so maybe we want to use one of
15:52the
15:52favors that we gathered during the course of the game, and that's where the cards come to play.
15:59So, I have multiple combat cards, and these cards can give me bonuses for the duration of the fight.
16:05For instance, I can unlock the rejuvenation skill for my dragon, which is cool, and I can have a devastation,
16:14but I have it already, so I don't need to add it anymore, and then I get three warlock mercenaries.
16:18So, see how that changed my odds? I went up with a couple of percentage points, and oh, this is
16:25rude,
16:25this is a really, this is a really good card. I get, in Greece monkeys, it upgrades the production of
16:32my
16:32battle forces, which is a kind of barracks with 25%, so my units will go faster than the enemy,
16:37so I like that card. And what else do I have? His shamans will have 75% less hit points.
16:43Now,
16:44he doesn't have them here yet, but I'm pretty sure he's going to build them in combat, and I don't
16:48know what cards he's going to play, so I'm just going to play it just in case. So, I could
16:53still retreat
16:53at this point, but I'm obviously going to go into combat, and so the last decision I have to make
16:58before I go into combat is what skills am I going to take with me, and obviously I have the
17:02rejuvenation
17:03skill, and I can basically put it somewhere here on the skill bar, and the reason why you have to
17:07do
17:07that is because these skill buttons are immediately linked to your hotkeys, so if I press the one on my
17:13keyboard, then I'm going to activate reaching fire. So, let's start a battle and see what happens.
17:21So, I'm going to be playing on what looks to be an ice map.
17:29Alright, so, let's see. So, I'm navigating camera using my cursor keys and my middle mouse button.
17:37There's the enemy, and he's immediately making a rush for it. So, let's see what I have. I got a
17:42lot of
17:43hunters, so I'm going to send them against his hunters over here, protect myself there, and I don't have,
17:48these guys are not going to be very good against the hunters, but they're very fast because I upgraded
17:52them, they're faster than these guys. So, he's actually making a rush for these capture points
17:57here. So, I'm going to turn into a dragon, I'm going to assist my units. So, you see that I
18:04can launch
18:05fireballs at the enemy, so, and these are mechanized units, so I'm now activating my skill, which allows
18:10me to do more damage to mechanized units, and I don't have to worry about those infantries which are
18:15arriving. Although, I do have to worry about that bazooka, well, that grenadier shooting at me.
18:21My units are doing pretty well right now. Well, that was a big fight to start with actually.
18:28Okay, let me just kill those guys and turn back into a commander, because my grenadiers are doing an
18:35excellent job, and I'm going to send my grenadiers, sorry, my troopers over there, and I help my
18:42with my dragonfurter to get rid of those guys. Excellent. So, turn back into human form and send
18:49those hunters to that base, which is now going to become mine. So, that was a really excellent move.
18:56So, let's kill all of this. These are capture points, and once you've captured them, you can build
19:00on them. So, I'm going to do ground turrets here, and these guys are basically dead meat at this point.
19:06They should actually, oh, what's that? He is sending a transporter. Luckily, I left those warlocks there.
19:12He's going to try to, and he's doing an invasion in the back. Look at that, my little bugger. Okay,
19:18that transporter is dead meat, so I don't have to worry about that. I'm using my jetpack powers,
19:23and I'm going to immediately, well, no, I'm going to first build the base here. I'm going to build a
19:28battle forge. Remember that I have faster building of my units on the battle forge, and they're taking
19:34care of him. We're still working on the AI, so he's not that clever. And we're going to make sure
19:40nothing is coming out. This guy doesn't have access to his primary collection point for resources,
19:45which is this one, which is a recruitment citadel. So, in this game, your resources are recruits,
19:52which you use to train them into, for instance, troopers, or like I'm doing now, into grenadiers.
20:00At the top of the screen here, we have the balance of power. It's clearly moving in my direction.
20:05This is the amount of recruits that I've already recruited. This is the amount of population
20:08from which I can recruit. So, there is a limit to the amount of recruits that you can have.
20:12I think I actually have a fairly good force, so I'm going to immediately invade. And just in case,
20:17I'm going to put a wait point here, which is going to help me assault at third base.
20:22All right. So, this is an anti-air, which is not very handy for my dragon. So, I don't want
20:30to go
20:30as a dragon here. So, I'm going to send my troopers in here. Okay, I'm going to build a turret
20:36here.
20:37Anti-crowd turret, not an anti-air turret, because he doesn't have any air units yet. And it looks like
20:43this fight is going to be easily mine. So, these guys should get rid of the anti-air so I
20:50can join as a dragon.
20:51And really, the AI should be surrendering itself now. It has no chance in hell. Oh, look at that.
20:59It doesn't have any chance anymore. Okay, I think it's time for me to join as a dragon, help a
21:04little bit.
21:04I'm going to activate my penetrating rounds. So, make sure. Okay, so it looks like it's going pretty well.
21:11The transporter over there is gone. We won. So, all we have to worry about now are these buildings here,
21:21which will help blow up a little bit. I can actually control my units when I am a dragon.
21:27So, if I press my F2 button, I can select everybody and I can tell them where to attack. So,
21:33I just told them to attack this building or I could just tell them to go and attack.
21:42I can give them different targets. So, there you go. I just gave them the target.
21:50Well, that's not working 100% yet, but it's supposed to work. Oh, well, there's an anti-air. So,
21:55it allows me to introduce another mechanic. So, as you can see, I can slow down time in single
22:00player and this allows me to dodge bullets. Now, it's very easy to dodge a single bullet. It becomes a
22:04lot
22:04harder. There's a hundred bullets following you. So, you don't want to do it at home, basically.
22:11Well, you do, actually. But, I guess you know what I mean. So, I'm going to send my guys in.
22:16Still trying to build. Look at that. You really should give up at this point. You're going to die.
22:23You're so dead AI. All right. Still doesn't want to give up. Well, let's go and kill those turrets,
22:30then. As I said, we're still working on the game. So, victory conditions will be modified.
22:36So, this was a fairly small battle. It was also a very small map. It was a not such a
22:40big fight.
22:41I came in with forces. They were relatively overwhelming and indeed my chance to win was
22:48higher than his chance to win and obviously had the unique advantage of a dragon. So, I may think at
22:53this point that I'm overpowered with my dragon. But, if you play this game for a couple of turns,
22:59you will discover that the AI has a lot of technology at his disposal, which can counter
23:04my technology. So, life becomes interesting and you end up in this kind of cold war situation.
23:09Anyway, the result of the battle is that I lost a number of units because I wasn't as efficient as
23:15I
23:15should have been. But, he lost more units. So, all in all, it was a good battle. I've got two
23:21hunter squads left. I've got three trooper squads left and my transporter survived. So, the translation
23:27of units on the strategy map to units in combat is that, for instance, one trooper pawn here equates,
23:35I think, four troopers in combat. So, we're now in the next turn and Revellum time reports on events.
23:41It says that I gave my ring to the lizard and made a nice headline of it, out of it.
23:48They're reporting on the fact that I'm winning. Yeah, okay. And, yeah, well, I need to do something
23:55about my elves and lizards. So, I received from the end that a card, probably for a decision which I
24:04took in the previous turns. My Battleforge, another one of those Battleforge cards. Well, thank you.
24:09and it proves to be useful. Edmund is happy and he gave me a combat card. Thank you, Edmund.
24:15And, Maxwell is happy too. He gave me a card which will make the enemy's warlocks slower. So,
24:21I've got three cards which I add to my deck. So, let's see very rapidly what Edmund has to say.
24:27Here you go, Commander. I've been meaning to return your ring, though I admit I do so with a hint
24:32of
24:32reluctance. What little marvel it is this ruby said that, with the back of the hand emblazoned
24:38by your signet, I struck him firmly across the jaw, exclaiming, feel the sting of the dragon! Crawl
24:45back from whence you... I'll remember this episode fondly, Commander. Reminisce with the choice
24:50sherry as the sound of your ring-shattering impish jaw resounds in my memory. Well, if you're happy,
24:55Edmund, I'm happy. All right, let's have a look here. Ah, we didn't see the throne room yet. So,
25:01apparently the counselors came up with something. I am pleading here today on behalf of a dwarven
25:05miner who was cruelly left to his fate by his own kindred. An incident in the mines cost him his
25:12leg,
25:13and he is too poor to pay... So, they want me to make a vote of what equates health care.
25:18So,
25:18the game features a whole bunch of political decisions that need to be taken by you as a player,
25:23and they actually affect a whole number of stats in the game, like how well the countries are
25:30defending and supporting you, and what technology will be available, how much gold you're making.
25:35So, obviously this is one that's going to cost me money if I'm going to introduce health care.
25:41So, let's see what people have to say about it, actually. Let's listen to Yorick here, of the undead.
25:46Just like diseases, accidents are simply punishments from the gods.
25:51If this misbegotten dwarf lost a leg, he probably took the Seven's names in vain,
25:57or forgot to say a prayer before dinner.
25:59All right. So, he has his opinion. Well, I know what your opinion is.
26:04Why do you have to say Sir Falstaff?
26:06For each and every work accident, for every broken nail and broken leg, we'll be paying through the no...
26:13He's warning her the treasurerly will bleed. Let's see what she has to say of the lizards.
26:18If this miner suffered such a dreadful injury while working, then the mining corporation in charge
26:23should pay for his treatment. And if they won't, or...
26:26And let's see what our Trin'Killu Shortviews has to say.
26:30...then without among us imps comes with the territory, I suppose.
26:33All those volatile war machines. Most of our top inventors have more metal than meat.
26:37So now I need to make a decision. Will I vote for, or will I vote nay?
26:43Well, you guys will never know what I think about healthcare, because I'm not going to show you.
26:50These decisions have consequences, and I don't want to spoil too much for you.
26:55But it gives you an idea of what there is to do in the game.
26:59So, without any further ado, I'm going to finish my Let's Play, because I promised only one turn,
27:04and this is actually a turn in a little bit. And for sure, we're going to be showing you more
27:11things
27:11over the coming weeks as we approach the release of Divinity Dragon Commander.
27:16Thank you for listening, and until the next time. Bye-bye.
27:18...
