00:00So, just before we go, I need to make a bit of a confession, mate.
00:06Oh?
00:08Yeah, I feel as if I need to sort of unburden myself.
00:13Okay.
00:14Confess away. Confess your sins.
00:16I have been really enjoying dire straits recently.
00:22Okay, right.
00:24Is that okay?
00:25I don't know where you're going with this, but...
00:26I don't know where. I'm just checking with you, because I look to you for sort of, you know...
00:31Dire straits, you see, I would never admit to that in public.
00:37But you're a dad now twice over, right?
00:40Yeah, yeah. So you're saying it's acceptable to like dad rock?
00:44Well, I'm just asking. Is this it now that we've come to this point?
00:49Well, when I was a young stud at university...
00:53You were never a stud.
00:54I liked Pink Floyd, mate, which was music from the 1970s.
00:58Pink Floyd's awesome.
01:00So, you know, in my mind, it doesn't make any difference whether Dire Straits is an old dad rock band
01:06or something else, you know.
01:09I guess the issue is that Pink Floyd are kind of, well, always way cooler than Dire Straits.
01:14Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
01:16Dire Straits are just... there's no cool there, is there?
01:20No.
01:20Money for nothing and your chicks for free.
01:23Ow!
01:24Check out the tar George, he got all the cords.
01:32So, it's looking really good.
01:35It's looking really good, isn't it?
01:37You've done something, haven't you? I'm just seeing immediately that it's just... there's something about it.
01:42You know me, I can never tell what's changed, but...
01:44Well...
01:44It's just looking a lot richer.
01:46Uh-huh.
01:47Has Ryan been...
01:48What's happened is, this is not a map that I made, this is one of the community maps.
01:52Right.
01:52It's one of the biggest community maps we've got, with 214 prisoners on site.
01:57Right.
01:58And 103 staff.
01:59Right, so there's over 300 entities walking around on this map.
02:03It's absolutely ginormous.
02:05And it's...
02:05Look at the size of it!
02:06Look at the size of that thing!
02:09That's no moon!
02:13And it's running really, really well.
02:15What's happened is, two months ago, when we wrapped up the previous alpha, and I said to Johnny,
02:21Johnny, I'm going away for two months to have a baby.
02:24I want you to solve our performance problem.
02:27Right?
02:27And Johnny just went...
02:30And did his Johnny thing.
02:31Did what he does.
02:32Yeah, he did what he does best.
02:33And he solved...
02:34Well, I'm not going to say that.
02:35He massively increased the performance of the game.
02:39Brilliant.
02:39I mean, yeah.
02:40It's an incredible speed-up, especially on PC.
02:44He really focused on the fact that we had some really bad performance glitches on PC.
02:48How did he do it, then?
02:49Well, there were some things that we were doing.
02:51He used some profilers.
02:52He used some very cool profilers on the Mac and found a lot of problems there.
02:56Right.
02:57And then he switched to PC and used...
02:58I think he used VTune and found a whole load of issues where we were copying large chunks
03:03of memory when we didn't need to.
03:05And the Mac didn't mind, right?
03:08Steve Jobs is like, yeah, sure.
03:09Copy memory.
03:10You know, your app.
03:12Whereas, you know, Bill Gates is like, no.
03:14You can't copy memory if you want your performance.
03:17You choose one or the other.
03:18All right.
03:20And so he optimized all that away.
03:22And I'm going to show you, in a break from tradition, I'm going to switch away from prison
03:26architect and I'm going to prove it with data.
03:29No way.
03:30Grass.
03:30Here's our graph of the frame rate of our test map.
03:34Now, our test map is the slowest map that we had.
03:37And this is all the raw data from it.
03:38And you can see here, it's running at about five frames a second.
03:41Yeah.
03:42That was in June.
03:43Right.
03:43And this is my gradual optimization work, poking it up to eight frames a second and then
03:4910 frames a second, right?
03:50So this here is 12th of the 9th.
03:52That's just the end of August, isn't it?
03:55Right.
03:55That's the end of August there, running at 11 frames a second.
03:58That's pretty much when Johnny took over.
04:00Right.
04:01And this is the graph now that Johnny has been on board.
04:03Oh, mate.
04:04That was so Apple.
04:05Woo!
04:06Yeah!
04:07Woo!
04:08Yeah!
04:08Woo!
04:09Look at that.
04:10Yeah.
04:10So here we were down, languishing in 11 frames a second land.
04:13Johnny's done his thing and brought it up to nearly 40 and then an even more optimization.
04:17And now it's, well, it's almost 40 frames a second.
04:20He is just a genius, isn't he?
04:22He's a genius.
04:23He is.
04:23He has some special skills and this is definitely one of them.
04:26Right.
04:26Okay.
04:27Moving on then.
04:28So that's performance.
04:29So we've got some new game features.
04:30All right.
04:31So you remember in the last update, we had guard dogs, didn't we?
04:34And those guard dogs.
04:34Who let the dogs out?
04:36Yeah.
04:36That.
04:37And those guard dogs, they had to, they got tired, didn't they?
04:40And they needed to rest.
04:41Yeah.
04:41Well, now we've extended that logic to all of your staff across the board.
04:46So your staff will now get knackered and run out of energy and slow right down.
04:51Right.
04:51And if you don't do anything about it, they'll just sit down on the spot with a cup of tea,
04:56basically, and they won't get up again until they've recovered.
04:59Right.
04:59Unless you decide to build a staff room.
05:02Yeah.
05:02So I'm going to decide that this common room here is far too, far too pansy-faced and liberal
05:09and all that.
05:11And I'm going to remove this staff room.
05:12I was watching Family Guy the other day.
05:13Sorry, this common room.
05:14And I'm going to replace it.
05:16Sorry, mate.
05:16I was watching Family Guy the other day and Stewie called Brian a libtard.
05:22A libtard.
05:24So we'll remove the common room that some crazy libtard has put in the middle of our prison.
05:28Yeah, some crazy idiot decided that all these maximum security murderers deserved a common
05:31room with some televisions in.
05:32Yeah.
05:33Well, no.
05:34Right.
05:34We're going to build a staff room instead.
05:35We need to have some sofas.
05:37So I'll arrange.
05:39I'll come up with a pleasing arrangement of sofas.
05:41I think.
05:42Like this.
05:44And there's large sofas and small sofas.
05:47And all the staff will use it as well.
05:48The administrators will use it.
05:50Doctors will use it.
05:51The workmen will use it.
05:52Okay.
05:52You can even put some drinks machines in.
05:54Really?
05:55Check those out.
05:56Oh, they're brilliant.
05:57Little drinks machines.
05:58And while we wait for that to finish, I'm going to use one of the other much requested
06:02gameplay features.
06:04You've been able to speed up time for a while to double speed.
06:08Yeah.
06:08Now you can go to ultra speed.
06:11Ultra speed.
06:13Ultra speed.
06:14And ultra speed speeds up the game by five times.
06:16Ludicrous speed.
06:18Ludicrous speed speeds up the game by five times.
06:20Did you watch Spaceballs?
06:22Let's not even go there.
06:23All right.
06:24All right.
06:25Sorry.
06:25You speed up the game five times.
06:27Yeah.
06:27So it makes a lot of difference right at the start of a prism when you're just waiting
06:29for a long time.
06:31Yeah.
06:31For things to happen.
06:32Yeah, yeah.
06:32It speeds things up a lot.
06:33Anyway, so I've skipped over some things there.
06:35You can see there that we had a guard here who's tired.
06:36So he's got a little green tired mark underneath him.
06:41Oh, okay.
06:41So that black bar is his overall energy level.
06:45Yeah.
06:45And when he gets tired, you get just a little green spot in the middle.
06:50Exactly.
06:50Well, that makes sense, doesn't it?
06:51And once they're tired, it makes more sense once you see them hanging out in the staff room
06:55because they charge back up again.
06:57And you also get a little note over here in the top left.
07:00See, it says staff exhausted.
07:02Oh, yeah.
07:03Four staffers are exhausted.
07:06And so what they'll do is they'll make their way to the staff room.
07:09And I think there was some there earlier while I was gabbing about other things.
07:13They'll make their way to the staff room and chill out, chillax, and regain their energy.
07:18Yeah, just have a little recoup from the stresses of running a prison.
07:21Exactly.
07:22So we've got staff rooms.
07:23We've got the very fast button that I've currently clicked on.
07:28And we've got, oh, yes, we've got some screen edge scrolling, right?
07:31So if you go to the edge of the screen, the screen scrolls.
07:35No way.
07:36You wouldn't believe it took us until alpha 14, would you?
07:39Sorry, it's alpha 15 now, isn't it?
07:41You've forgotten.
07:42You've forgotten.
07:42It took us until 15.
07:44It's been 15 months and we finally put screen edge scrolling in.
07:48There we go.
07:49Yeah, there we go.
07:49Keep up wanting more.
07:50There's a dude who's resting.
07:52We get our priorities right.
07:53We put guard dogs in.
07:54That's probably more important.
07:56Yeah, I agree.
07:58Another much requested feature.
07:59Here's your prisoners.
08:00So we've got a mixture of high-risk and low-risk prisoners here.
08:05You now get a different grant for your different prisoners.
08:10Okay, okay, good.
08:11So your minsec prisoners, I think, get you $50 per day each.
08:16Your standard prisoners get you $100 per day each.
08:19And your max security prisoners get you $150 per day each.
08:22How in the big money?
08:24Yeah.
08:24So you can now, if you're able to take more maximum security prisoners,
08:30you can make a more profitable prison.
08:33Yeah, I think that's how it should be.
08:35Good.
08:36All right.
08:37Yeah.
08:38Contraband screen.
08:40All right.
08:40So I've made a small update to the contraband screen.
08:42But wait.
08:43This is the screen that shows you...
08:44But wait.
08:45There's more.
08:47This is the screen that shows you where all your contraband comes from.
08:50Yeah.
08:50You can now show in filter the last 24 hours' worth of found contraband.
08:55This is similar to what we had before.
08:56So you can click on anything like this fork, and it will tell you where it came from.
09:00Yeah.
09:00But you can also go longer, and you can say, here's the last seven days' worth of contraband.
09:04Right, right.
09:04Colour-coded.
09:05So red means that they're predominantly a weapon.
09:07Yeah.
09:08Blue means predominantly an escape tool.
09:09Green means predominantly narcotics.
09:12Yeah.
09:12Cigarettes and things.
09:15Do cigarettes count as narcotics?
09:16Yeah, I think so.
09:17Yeah.
09:17Smuggled in through visitation.
09:18Kind of.
09:19Kind of.
09:20It's kind of up to you, isn't it?
09:21They're contraband, aren't they?
09:22Yeah.
09:23Yeah.
09:23And then you can look, if you really want to have a laugh, you can look at all contraband
09:27discovered over all time in your prison, and you can see the groupings of where most
09:31of your contraband has been stolen from.
09:32What's that in the bottom right?
09:34I don't know what that is.
09:35What is that?
09:35What room is that?
09:37Is it a spoon production wing?
09:39It's a canteen.
09:40Is it a canteen?
09:42It's a holding cell, isn't it?
09:44It's where people are getting caught in the holding cell.
09:46Ah, yeah.
09:46People are normally automatically searched when they arrive in the prison.
09:49Yeah.
09:49I mean, this is an enormous prison that someone's made.
09:51This is day 163.
09:53Right.
09:53So there's a lot of contraband that's been found in this prison.
09:56Right.
09:56All right.
09:57That's enough of all that.
09:59All right.
10:00Bit of a wild card now.
10:02All right.
10:02In the main menu, we've moved some things into the extras menu now because it was getting
10:07a little bit full of stuff.
10:09Yeah.
10:09In the extras menu, we've put the names in the game.
10:11We've put the time lapse.
10:12And if this was the Steam version, you would have the Steam Workshop in here.
10:15Yeah.
10:15And a new feature called mods.
10:19Here we go.
10:21So this is the mod screen.
10:22So what this is, we've decided that we would like to support the modding community a little
10:27bit better.
10:29Yeah.
10:29Yeah.
10:30And so previously, they had to kind of hack their mods into the game.
10:34But now you can make mods and put them into a mods folder in your save file, in your save
10:39directory.
10:39And they'll show up in this list of available mods.
10:42So for example, now we didn't make any of these mods.
10:44I'm just going to say that straight away.
10:45But we did take some mods from the wiki and repackage them into our mod system just for
10:50testing purposes.
10:51Okay.
10:51So I've got here, for example, a language mod, which I might turn on.
10:55And then maybe a people mod.
10:59This is a people mod.
11:00This is a graphical mod.
11:01Why are these things on the right?
11:03Why is it Johnny?
11:04Oh, well, I'll show you.
11:06That's a thumbnail, right?
11:07Every mod can come with a thumbnail.
11:08Okay.
11:09So we've just got a picture of Johnny in as a test.
11:11Okay.
11:12So I'm going to activate this graphical mod that replaces the sprites for people.
11:16Okay.
11:16And I'm going to activate the language mod, which I think is a translation into French.
11:25Okay.
11:26So there's two mods running now, right?
11:28So you can see that the sprites for the guards have all been changed.
11:31Right.
11:31So you can see they've all gone like a weird color, right?
11:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:34I didn't say it was a good mod.
11:35This is just a test mod.
11:36There you go.
11:36You see, we've color-coded all the chefs bright red just so we can tell that it worked.
11:41And if you look down here at some of these tooltips, what does this say?
11:55That's brilliant.
11:58Okay.
11:58So some of the games...
12:00So it's French, right?
12:01So we've translated...
12:02So, yeah.
12:02So, I mean, on our wiki, for people that don't know, we've got translations, community-led
12:07translations into about seven or eight languages now.
12:10And are you going to go through each of those seven or eight languages and offend them in
12:13the same way that you just offended our French cousins?
12:16Well, I could do.
12:17Do you want me to?
12:17So that's rendering.
12:19Yeah, this is the German translation.
12:23Yeah, you're going to my prison.
12:25You must form line.
12:27Form line.
12:27Form line.
12:27Form line.
12:28Form line.
12:29Form line.
12:29Form line.
12:30That's really bad.
12:32Oh, dear.
12:33Oh, dear.
12:34In our international community.
12:36Yeah.
12:36So if there's any European people who made those translations are still listening at this
12:42point, we'd like to encourage them to repackage the language mod such that it works with a
12:47new mod system.
12:47It's generally the same as how it was, except now you have to put your mods into a certain
12:51folder.
12:52Right.
12:52You just have to have things in a certain place.
12:55So I'll then deactivate them.
12:57I mean, a very common, a very, very useful type of mod is a grants mod, right?
13:02So you know how I'm basically lazy and I wrote the grant system and there's only three grants
13:07in the whole game, right?
13:09So there's not nearly enough grants.
13:11Yes.
13:12So the community have filled that gap by making new grants mods.
13:15Right.
13:16And this is one such mod.
13:17Right.
13:18So by activating that mod in the grants list, you can now see there's a whole list of community
13:22made mods.
13:23Right.
13:24That give you all kinds of features that we never came up with.
13:27So this is the best one.
13:28Add some nature to your prison.
13:31Prisoners with access to fresh air, trees and grass have an increased chance of rehabilitation.
13:36Oh, that's nice, isn't it?
13:37So you have to plant some trees and have some outdoor areas.
13:40Yeah.
13:40Yeah, and there's the global financial crisis mod that also adds a lot of new grants in.
13:45Really quite clever ones, actually, that let you do things like you can lease part of
13:49your land away as a garbage dump right in the middle of your prison in order to raise
13:56some extra money, which I think is an interesting trade-off.
13:58I think it's brilliant.
13:59I think that's exactly the sort of thing that we need to be playing.
14:02Yeah, that's fantastic.
14:04Yeah, exactly.
14:05So let's do it for that.
14:06So what else can you do?
14:07Well, the ultimate type of mod is a scenario mod.
14:11Right.
14:12A scenario mod is basically akin to our introduction chapter.
14:16Okay.
14:16So if I activate this scenario mod, this is a test mod that Leander made.
14:22And what it basically does is it works exactly the same as Death Row, right?
14:27The Death Row intro.
14:28It loads a map and it plays some music.
14:30Right.
14:31And the CEO gives you some objectives.
14:33Right.
14:33Here we go.
14:36and it cuts away and it plays a cutscene on another map and it does all the things that
14:40we basically do in our introduction.
14:42Right, right.
14:42So all these features are now available to the modding community.
14:46So they could make, I don't know what they could make, but they could make their own scenarios,
14:49their own stories.
14:50They could make a prison in a forest, didn't they?
14:52Yeah, I don't really know why it cuts to a forest.
14:54This is some sort of Leander Hamley sense of humour.
14:56Zelda's about to walk in.
14:58Link's about to pop up from the bottom.
15:01Exactly.
15:02What's this?
15:03Who's stolen my ocarina?
15:06So while that's working, I'll show you how it works here.
15:10So this is the prison asset save folder, right, in your app data location.
15:14So there's now a mod save folder and this is where you dump your mod.
15:17So when you're downloading a mod, you just copy it into here and it'll automatically show
15:20up in the list.
15:21Brilliant.
15:22So the scenario mod, so every mod now has a data folder, which is the files that you're
15:27overriding in the game.
15:28Yeah, okay.
15:29And it has the text file that specifies those details that were in the main menu, like who
15:34made it and what date it was made and the description.
15:37So this information shows up in the modding screen.
15:39Yeah, nice.
15:40And this thumbnail, that's the image that you were saying, why the heck's Johnny invisible?
15:44Yeah, yeah, okay.
15:44You can put an optional thumbnail there.
15:46They're just placeholders.
15:47Yeah, exactly.
15:48So if you'd got your face in a game, you might use your place in a game sprite.
15:53Or you could use any graphic you like.
15:54And then in the data folder, you have the necessary files.
15:57So in this case, because it's a scenario mod, there's a script file in campaign called
16:03start.lua with a function called begin.
16:06And that's all you have to have.
16:08You have to have a begin function and that's your entry point.
16:10And so for all those people that love messing around in Lua and writing scenes and things,
16:15this is Leander's test script to run that introduction.
16:18Oh, brilliant.
16:19So people have got a little place to have a look to start off with.
16:22So I think what we'll do is we'll actually ship this mod with Alpha 15.
16:27Ship it!
16:27Yeah, because it's a good tutorial on how to make mods for those that are interested.
16:33And for everyone else that doesn't want to make mods but would love to play some mods,
16:36you'll just have to wait a little while until some decent mods appear.
16:40Yeah, exactly.
16:41Exactly.
16:42All right.
16:44That's everything.
16:46That's all of our new features.
16:47I'm astonished.
16:48Are you?
16:49And you should have babies more often.
16:54No, I don't think I should actually.
16:56Yeah.
16:57I think two's enough.
16:58Let's delve underneath here and look at who did the work.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Johnny's done a great job and Leander's done a great job.
17:03That's basically the long shot.
17:04And here you are taking all the glory.
17:07Yeah.
17:07And we should probably mention as well that I didn't even do the staff room work.
17:10Gary did the staff room work.
17:11Gary did the staff room work.
17:12But that's okay.
17:14I oversaw the work.
17:15Yes, yes.
17:16I had Babe in one hand and I had Skype in the other.
17:20Is that even possible?
17:20I had a phone in the other.
17:22Yeah.
17:22And through nefarious acts of control, I directed people to do my bidding.
17:28I think you're a creative leader.
17:31Showed strong creative leadership, mate.
17:34Yes, there you go.
17:34That's Alpha 15.
17:35It is Alpha 15, isn't it?
17:37It is Alpha 15.
17:38It is Alpha 15.
17:39So we hope you all enjoyed Alpha 15 after that short break.
