00:00Look at this, that's a bug.
00:02What?
00:03This guy tunneled out with a hacksaw
00:06and then stopped and put handcuffs on.
00:11Tweet it, tweet it!
00:12I don't need to tweet it, it's in the Alpha video.
00:21So, this is Prison Architect Alpha 13.
00:25Unlucky for some, but not unlucky for the Prison Architect fans
00:30because we've got some very cool stuff coming up, haven't we, mate?
00:33We've got some very cool stuff coming up.
00:35Shall I explain it to you?
00:37It's been a long time coming.
00:39It's been a whole month since our last update.
00:41Well, yeah, but some of this stuff,
00:42these are promises that you've been making for years.
00:45Yeah, yeah, there are.
00:47All right, let's get on with them.
00:49Yep.
00:49Do you see these guys here?
00:52Right.
00:52Sleeping?
00:53Yeah, these guys sleeping.
00:54Yeah.
00:54Right.
00:55They're not actually, they're sleeping.
00:57Oh!
00:58No, they're not.
00:59They're not sleeping.
01:00Well, we don't know where they are.
01:02They don't know where they are, because.
01:03We don't know for certain where they are.
01:05But I'm telling you that these guys are digging escape tunnels.
01:08Yeah.
01:09They are.
01:10Cheeky.
01:11During the daytime,
01:12they used Alpha 12's contraband system
01:15to steal tools from the workshop.
01:17Right.
01:17And to steal spoons from the canteen.
01:19Yeah.
01:19All that stuff that we're talking about.
01:21Yeah.
01:22And they sneak them back to their cells.
01:24Cheeky.
01:24And now it's night time.
01:26Yeah.
01:26And they are digging away.
01:28Yeah.
01:29In fact, I'm going to cheat,
01:31and I'm going to reveal what they're actually doing.
01:33Right.
01:34I'm going to click on this button here.
01:35Nope, that's the wrong button.
01:36I'm going to click on this button here.
01:38There we go.
01:39So you can see this dude here, for example.
01:43Duncan Forrester.
01:44He's under the wall already.
01:45He's out the wall.
01:46He's out.
01:48There he is.
01:48He's already made it out.
01:49Now, I should mention at this point,
01:51what should be obvious,
01:53which is that I've sped up the rate of digging
01:55for the purposes of this Alpha video.
01:57Yeah.
01:57They can't normally dig out in just an hour's work or so.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Right.
02:02That would make things a bit easier.
02:04It's like the great escape on Fast Forward.
02:06Yeah.
02:07And also, everybody's digging,
02:08because I've got this cheat mode enabled.
02:10Yeah.
02:11Just so that you can see what's going on.
02:12It's escaped.
02:12He's escaped.
02:13Yeah, this guy made it.
02:15There you go.
02:16There he is.
02:17Stacy, there's his little spoon that he was using.
02:20He's still on the spoon.
02:22Oh, there's another one.
02:24Oh, they're all coming out.
02:25Yeah.
02:26This is a lesson, right,
02:27that from this point forwards,
02:29maximum security cell blocks
02:30that are two squares away from the perimeter wall
02:32are not a good idea anymore.
02:33Okay?
02:34They're no longer a good idea.
02:35You can see here that these guys
02:36that are tunneling after the event,
02:38this guy here, Warren Simpson,
02:39he's cunningly realized that this escape tunnel already exists.
02:42Right, right.
02:43And it's then changed direction
02:44and gone through
02:45because the perimeter wall is costly to dig through.
02:47It takes a long time.
02:48These guys down here,
02:49this is a larger example,
02:51right, check that out.
02:53So what's happened there
02:53is that multiple prisoners are digging escape tunnels
02:55and as they dig,
02:56they're cooperating
02:57to form one continuous escape tunnel.
02:59You would have thought
03:00that prisoners would have cooperated.
03:01Yeah, I know.
03:02But once they dig escape tunnels,
03:03they become very cooperative.
03:04Common goal, my friend.
03:05Common goal.
03:06Yeah.
03:07And that, this,
03:08is what you, the prisoner, sees.
03:09So he's not really here,
03:11Duncan Forrest.
03:12Yeah.
03:13You know, he's,
03:14the game is lying.
03:17And in order for us to discover that,
03:20well, I think a good way to discover
03:21what's actually going on
03:22is probably to search him, right?
03:24Because if it says he's here
03:26and he's sleeping,
03:27Yeah.
03:27Well, how can he be there?
03:28He's not there, right?
03:30Yeah.
03:30So let's click on him
03:30and let's click,
03:31let's search him.
03:33Again, Alpha 12 features here.
03:35You can search individual prisoners.
03:37Somebody come and search him.
03:39Very well-motivated guards.
03:42What's that?
03:43Here we go.
03:44Oh, what's happened?
03:45Oh, look.
03:47Guards discovered the tunnel.
03:50There they are.
03:51Twist them out, wait.
03:53Oh, no.
03:53There's all the dudes
03:54that were tunneling.
03:55Look, they're all up
03:56where their dukes are at.
03:57Get them, get them.
03:59They're all escaping.
04:00This might be an appropriate point
04:01to put the prison in lockdown.
04:03Stop it, man.
04:04Don't let them go out.
04:05We've already had
04:05three escapes already.
04:07Oh, my God.
04:07These guards are so inept.
04:10It doesn't matter.
04:11I put the prison in lockdown.
04:12They're not going anywhere.
04:13Wait.
04:21All right.
04:21I think that's it.
04:22I can end the lockdown now.
04:24Yeah, so what happened there then?
04:26What did happen there?
04:29Well, what happened was
04:30we searched somebody
04:31that we thought was in his cell, right?
04:32Yeah.
04:33And it turned out
04:34that it wasn't in his cell.
04:35It turns out that actually
04:36what's in his cell
04:37is this thing here, right?
04:39It's a dummy.
04:40In this case,
04:41it's a basketball
04:41with a face painted on it.
04:42But it could be
04:43a paper mache dummy
04:44that they've made
04:44in the workshop.
04:46Yeah.
04:46Or it could be
04:47a pillow.
04:47Just a bundle of clothes.
04:49Yeah, a bundle of clothes.
04:51They've made up their bed
04:51to look like they're there
04:52and asleep,
04:53but they're not really.
04:53So everyone that busted out
04:56was all captured at once.
04:57And so you can hear
04:58a lot of whistling going on.
04:59It's because people
05:00are escaping
05:00at the edges of the map
05:01because I've got
05:01the cheat code turned on
05:03so high.
05:04Yeah.
05:05So for real,
05:06the tunnels will be
05:07a lot slower
05:08and a lot fewer.
05:09Well, for one thing,
05:10these guys don't actually
05:11need to have digging tools
05:12in order to dig
05:13escape tunnels right now
05:14for demonstration purposes.
05:16But in the real game,
05:17in Alpha 13,
05:18they actually need to have
05:19tunnels,
05:20tunneling tools,
05:21and they need to have
05:22lots of time.
05:23So you've got loads of time
05:24to discover them.
05:25Yeah.
05:25Once you've found a tunnel,
05:27once you've found a tunnel,
05:28you can,
05:29it just stays there.
05:31And obviously,
05:31these cells are a little bit,
05:32Yeah.
05:33Well, their warranty
05:34is invalid, really,
05:35isn't it?
05:36I mean, I'm not sure
05:36that they would be fit
05:37to secure prison cells
05:39at this juncture.
05:40Not given that there's
05:41a tunnel that runs
05:41all the way to the outside,
05:43no.
05:43Yeah.
05:43So there's a new
05:44removed tunnels material
05:45which you can use.
05:46And you can build
05:48over the escape tunnels
05:49that you've found.
05:50Look at that.
05:53The workmen will come along
05:54and we'll fill it
05:55with concrete
05:56and just gradually
05:57remove those tunnels.
05:59Tunnels always start
06:00from the toilets
06:01in somebody's cell.
06:04So what can you do
06:06about it?
06:07Because obviously,
06:09it's not entirely fair
06:10that prisoners
06:10can just dig escape tunnels.
06:14We've actually had
06:15the escape tunnel technology
06:16for a long time.
06:18I remember you showed me this.
06:20Yeah.
06:20This is the underlying
06:21escape tunnel technology.
06:23This is the dig map.
06:24What it shows you
06:25is it shows every prison
06:27in what direction
06:27to dig in.
06:28Yeah.
06:28So you can see that
06:29these guys here,
06:31for example,
06:31in this cell here,
06:33his best route out
06:34is to dig across
06:35and then up
06:36and then left
06:38and then out.
06:40And they try to avoid
06:42digging through buildings
06:43because that's expensive
06:43and slow.
06:44Yeah.
06:44And they'll try and dig
06:45around walls
06:46because that's expensive
06:46and slow.
06:47And you'll notice as well
06:48that they often dig
06:49along your pipes.
06:51Yeah.
06:52Your big fat pipes.
06:53So if you're going to put
06:54these enormous water pipes
06:55through your walls,
06:56it creates an incredible
06:57weak spot in your prison layout.
06:59It makes tunneling
07:00a lot quicker.
07:01Yeah.
07:02So that's worthy
07:03of consideration.
07:04And this is actually
07:04the cool feature
07:05of escape tunnels
07:06is it forces you
07:06to rethink
07:07all the security
07:08because all these cells here,
07:10all these max security cells here
07:12that were right on the edge
07:12of the prison,
07:13that's a terrible idea.
07:14And also,
07:15when we did rumble them,
07:17they popped out here
07:18and they made it
07:19all the way
07:20to the front gate
07:21before we were able
07:21to stop them
07:22just by running.
07:23So really,
07:23this whole prison
07:25needs to be
07:27segregated with fences.
07:29It needs to be
07:30subdivided into sections.
07:32Yeah.
07:32So that if any prisoner
07:33does manage to pop out
07:35of an escape tunnel,
07:36he's only going to get so far.
07:38Yeah.
07:39So I was talking about
07:40the fact that we've had
07:41escape tunnels
07:41working for ages,
07:43but we've waited until now
07:45to put them in the game
07:46because there's no point
07:48in putting escape tunnels
07:49in the game
07:49unless you,
07:50the player,
07:50can actually discover them,
07:51right?
07:51That's right.
07:52So what method do you think
07:53you would discover
07:53escape tunnels with?
07:55I like dogs.
07:56What?
07:57I like dogs.
07:59What?
08:00Have you seen Snatch?
08:02Oh, yeah.
08:04Is that meant to be
08:05an Irish accent?
08:06I like dogs.
08:07It's meant to be
08:07Brad Pitt and Snatch.
08:09Dogs, mate.
08:10Dogs.
08:10Yeah, dogs.
08:11And so,
08:14but there's bad news.
08:17The dogs aren't in yet.
08:18No, they're not in yet.
08:20I couldn't finish them in time.
08:21I'm sorry.
08:22I couldn't.
08:23I wanted to put them
08:23in Alpha 12
08:24because, you know,
08:25they're great for detecting
08:27contraband,
08:28sniffing drugs,
08:29and I wanted to put them
08:30in Alpha 13
08:31because they're great
08:31for detecting tunnels
08:32as well,
08:33but I just,
08:34I couldn't,
08:35I couldn't get them
08:36finished in time.
08:36You have been on holiday,
08:37mate, haven't you?
08:38I've been,
08:38I was on holiday
08:39for a week and a half.
08:40Which is not too much
08:41to ask for
08:41after a year's development,
08:42so I think,
08:43I think they'll forgive us.
08:44I got quite a lot done
08:45on holiday, though.
08:46I shouldn't say that,
08:47should I?
08:47You are a workaholic,
08:49my friend.
08:50So when dogs
08:51eventually make their way in.
08:52Dogs are going to be
08:52in the next Alpha.
08:54Oh, there's a promise,
08:55everybody.
08:56Yeah, there's a promise.
08:56I'm promising,
08:57I promise now.
08:58Dogs are going to be
08:59in the next Alpha
09:00so that you can track
09:01all this stuff down.
09:02There are other ways,
09:03though.
09:03There are other things
09:04that you can do.
09:04So we've got some
09:05new searching powers.
09:06Right, okay, good.
09:07So you can click on a prisoner
09:08if you suspect him
09:09of searching
09:11and you can search
09:12his entire cell
09:13with that button.
09:14You can click on any object
09:15in a cell like a bed
09:16and you can say
09:17search cell.
09:18That works too.
09:19Or alternatively,
09:20if you want to go nuts,
09:21you can click on a prisoner
09:22or any item
09:23and you can say
09:24search entire cell block.
09:25Oh, he's not going to be happy.
09:26See that?
09:27So the whole cell block
09:28gets searched
09:29as a result.
09:30There's another thing
09:31that you can do
09:31to stop it.
09:32There's a new feature
09:32called perimeter wall
09:33and you can drag this down
09:36and it's a very expensive
09:37and very slow
09:38to build wall.
09:41And I don't have
09:42any art for it yet.
09:43It's placeholder art.
09:44But the idea is
09:44that this is
09:45a very tall wall
09:46with barbed wire
09:47and also goes
09:48very, very deep.
09:49So, you know,
09:50that thing I was showing
09:51you earlier,
09:52the dig map
09:52shows what direction
09:53to dig.
09:54They'll always go around
09:55the perimeter wall
09:56if they can.
09:57They can tunnel
09:58through a perimeter wall
09:58but it'll take
09:59a very, very long time.
10:01So once you've got
10:01the money
10:02you can put
10:02perimeter walls
10:03up around
10:03key sections
10:05of your prison
10:05where you suspect
10:06there will be tunneling.
10:07On a completely
10:07unrelated note
10:09you can now
10:10control the punishments
10:11handed out
10:12to your prisoners.
10:13So you can go
10:14to bureaucracy
10:15Yes.
10:16And on bureaucracy
10:17you can unlock
10:18prison policy.
10:19Right.
10:20Your chief unlocks it
10:21and it gives you
10:21control over the
10:22punishment policy
10:23of your prison.
10:24Yeah.
10:25It's very important this.
10:26It's very important.
10:28I'm going to cheat
10:28and I'm going to
10:29accelerate time
10:30until I have that.
10:31And now as a result
10:32of that being unlocked
10:33I can now go to
10:34reports
10:34and I get a new
10:35report called
10:36policy.
10:37So before you
10:38explain that
10:39let's talk a little bit
10:39about the background
10:40of this
10:40because for us
10:42we've always been
10:43very keen
10:44to make a game
10:46which kind of
10:46simulates a prison
10:48in a relatively
10:50kind of fair way
10:51and doesn't allow
10:52us to put too much
10:54of our own opinion
10:55on it.
10:55So we want you
10:56to be able to build
10:56a kind of nice
10:58left-wing prison
10:58but also a right-wing
10:59hellhole
11:00if you want to
11:01and up to this
11:02point there's not
11:02really been too
11:03much of that.
11:04There's only kind of
11:05really been one
11:05sort of route
11:06through the game
11:06and I think this
11:08policy table
11:09actually is the
11:10first step
11:10to really allowing
11:11players to really
11:13experiment with how
11:14hard they want to be
11:15on the inmates
11:16and really turn it
11:17into a hellhole
11:18and see what happens.
11:19Yeah, quite right.
11:20I mean the previous
11:21way to win the game
11:22was to look at
11:23the needs report
11:24and to manage the
11:26needs of your prisoners
11:27which is a profoundly
11:27left-wing approach
11:28to prison building
11:29isn't it?
11:30And many people
11:31have rightly requested
11:32the ability to ignore
11:33the needs altogether.
11:34Yeah.
11:34Anything above the
11:35base needs of
11:36bladders and bowels
11:36and stuff.
11:37So the policy report
11:38is the answer.
11:39So now if you catch
11:40somebody during an
11:41escape attempt for
11:42example you might
11:43decide well lockdown
11:44isn't nearly sufficient
11:45I want solitary
11:46confinement for
11:47oh well there's no
11:49upper limit really
11:50we can just set this
11:50as ours you want
11:51there you go.
11:5112 hours in solitary
11:53for an escape attempt.
11:5612 hours for a
11:57complaint mate
11:57that would be...
11:58Well this is a new
11:59one right so
12:00prisoners complain
12:01all the time but
12:02nothing happens
12:03the guards don't do
12:04anything.
12:05Yeah.
12:05Well no more.
12:06You complain in this
12:07prison you can be
12:08locked in your cell
12:09for an hour.
12:10You'll miss visitation
12:11you'll miss the
12:11workshop you'll miss
12:12the canteen
12:13you'll just be locked
12:14in your cell
12:15give you a chance
12:15to cool down
12:16and stop your
12:17whinging.
12:19That's a choice
12:19right.
12:20By default there won't
12:21be any punishment
12:22for complaining
12:22because it's a bit
12:23harsh but if you
12:25want to build a
12:26really right wing
12:26prison remember
12:27that complaints
12:29are the first step
12:31of a full scale
12:32riot.
12:33That's right.
12:34And if you slap
12:34down the complaints
12:35early enough well
12:36you might get a
12:37bigger riot but you
12:38might get no riot.
12:39Well yeah because
12:40they might not have
12:41the kind of impetus
12:42because they're so
12:43afraid of the guards.
12:44Quite right.
12:45So I've broken down
12:46as well on the
12:46different types of
12:47contraband that can
12:48be caught with now
12:48and the different
12:49punishments that they
12:49can have for that.
12:50You might be happy
12:51to let them get
12:51high but not to
12:53have a weapon.
12:53Exactly.
12:54You might decide
12:54that having a weapon
12:55is far worse than
12:56having drugs for
12:57example.
12:57And as we know
12:58from Alpha 12
12:59once a prisoner has
13:00been in solitary
13:01confinement for a
13:02long time he becomes
13:04suppressed doesn't he?
13:06He does.
13:06He gets this idea
13:07that he doesn't want
13:07to misbehave any
13:08longer.
13:09So longer punishments
13:10take the person out
13:11of action and also
13:12stop them from doing
13:13anything for a long
13:14time.
13:14So I thoroughly expect
13:15prayers to be able to
13:16set this up in such a
13:17way that people are
13:18permanently suppressed
13:19within their prison.
13:20Did you just say
13:21prayers?
13:22No.
13:23You did.
13:23You said prayers
13:24because that's what
13:25you have to do when
13:25you play prison
13:26architect.
13:28You just have to
13:28pray that it will
13:29work out okay.
13:30You might be right.
13:31There's an additional
13:32nice feature about
13:33this policy table which
13:34is that you can now
13:34trigger automatic
13:35searches.
13:36So if for example
13:38you catch somebody
13:40say you catch somebody
13:42causing serious injury
13:43to somebody else.
13:44Yeah.
13:45That's a bad example.
13:45say they attack a
13:46prisoner.
13:47You can say whether
13:48you want to research
13:49him or to search
13:50his cell and it
13:51happens automatically.
13:53So as soon as
13:55they've been stopped
13:56from attacking another
13:56prisoner they'll be
13:57searched and their
13:58cell will be searched.
14:00And this makes sense
14:01because in the case
14:03of like if you find
14:04somebody with tools
14:05for example they're
14:07probably thinking about
14:08digging escape tools.
14:09So it makes a lot of
14:10sense to search their
14:11cell automatically.
14:12This just goes off
14:13automatically the jobs
14:14are generated and your
14:14guards will ultimately
14:15do it.
14:16I think that I think
14:17there is these are
14:18game-changing features
14:19escape tunnels force
14:20you to rethink the
14:21design of your prison
14:22and the policy table
14:24gives you all kinds
14:24of new options.
14:25It's just slightly
14:26disappointing that we
14:26weren't able to put in
14:27the detection method
14:29in time but you know
14:30next alpha.
14:31Something to look
14:32forward to.
14:32So that is it from us.
14:35If you haven't already
14:36got involved with the
14:37alpha you can do so now
14:38by buying prison
14:39architect on steam or
14:41at prison-architect.com
14:43if you're already in the
14:44alpha.
14:44we hope you enjoy the
14:45update for 13 and get in
14:47touch in the forums and
14:48things and let us know
14:49what you think.
