00:04Alla prossima!
00:30What is that? Is that a baseball bat?
00:33That's a truncheon, a nightstick, there's a shotgun, a boomstick mate, there's a sniper rifle, there's a body armour, I've
00:47probably set some bad expectations up there because you can't have all those guns in the game yet.
00:52Ah, teasing the fans again mate.
00:54Yeah but we'll get there and there are guard lockers, this is a new room type so you can create
00:57an armoury and it needs to have weapons racks and it needs to have guard lockers.
01:02Right.
01:02And once you have these things you can deploy armed guards to your prison.
01:07Really?
01:08Yeah.
01:08And why would you want to deploy armed guards to your prison? Well let's put one in shall we?
01:12You want to blow shit up man!
01:14No, they don't blow shit up.
01:16Yeah, yeah.
01:16Here we go, here's our armed guard. Isn't he cool?
01:19Ah, he is cool.
01:21You can see that his weapon is stowed on his back.
01:25Let's send him into this canteen.
01:27Right.
01:30Now...
01:32Put in a few other...
01:33You might have noticed there that when the armed guards went into this canteen it was a bit rowdy when
01:37they went in.
01:37Yes, I thought I was wondering about that.
01:39It was a bit rowdy and then once the armed guards walked in everyone's gone quiet.
01:43Ah, funny that isn't it?
01:44No, just eating peacefully.
01:45Yeah.
01:46What's that one doing in the bottom right? He's just staring at Wolven.
01:50He's just staring at him.
01:52He's just staring him out.
01:53No one's causing any trouble now are they?
01:55You're eating your growl, Wolven!
01:57You're eating your growl!
02:00Yeah, so what's happening here then is that these armed guards, right, because they're armed
02:05and because prisoners know they're going to get their heads blown off if they play their cards wrongly,
02:09these guys have a tremendous intimidating effect on prisoners around them.
02:13Prisoners are scared by these guys.
02:16Okay.
02:17But, in the same breath as that, if two prisoners started fighting in here,
02:23it doesn't necessarily mean these armed guards are just going to suddenly go like,
02:26Yeah! Boom! Boom!
02:28Because that's just not how it works, right?
02:30The reality is that they create an intimidation effect but they will not shoot your prisoners dead
02:35unless you give them explicit permission to do so.
02:38Right, right.
02:39You, the player, have to handle a responsibility of when to use lethal force for your armed guards.
02:44Yeah, okay. That sounds good, man. That sounds good. Like rules of engagement.
02:47Yeah, rules of engagement.
02:48So, you know, a common use for them would be to create some armed patrols like this, for example.
02:53Yeah, yeah.
02:53And those two guards, you could assign them to an armed patrol and they will just walk around the yard
02:58looking mean.
03:00Okay, yeah. Looking badass!
03:03Yeah, exactly. And so, we have this thing called a suppression effect, right?
03:07Right.
03:08You get it, when a prisoner misbehaves and gets thrown in solitary, they get suppressed.
03:13They get kind of beaten down by the system, effectively.
03:16Yeah.
03:17And you don't get much of it because there aren't usually many prisoners in solitary.
03:21There's one, right?
03:22Yeah, yeah.
03:22You can see he's heavily suppressed.
03:24Yeah.
03:24Your armed guards create the suppression effect on every prisoner nearby.
03:28Okay.
03:28Right.
03:29So the prisoners that are constantly seeing armed guards all around them, they're just going to be suppressed all the
03:34time.
03:35Yeah.
03:36And they will, that has a corresponding effect on their morale.
03:39Right.
03:40They don't, now we don't, we're treading into ground here where we don't really, we haven't really finished the end
03:46game of the system yet.
03:47So there isn't really any concept of like reform in your prisoners yet.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Not in the game, only in our minds.
03:52Only in our minds.
03:53But if you built a prison that was, everyone was suppressed heavily and their armed guards everywhere and you ruled
03:57the place by hard force all the time, your prisoners would never really be amenable to education programs or reform
04:05programs of any kind.
04:06Yeah.
04:06It's like when you think back to that really strict teacher, you know, and you didn't learn things because you
04:10were so terrified.
04:11Yeah, exactly.
04:12You know, you're not learning anything, right?
04:14Exactly.
04:14Because you're scared that you're going to, you know, you've not written a correct entry in your homework diary or
04:19whatever it was at your school.
04:20Yeah, exactly that.
04:21And you'll get held for detention.
04:23Yeah.
04:25Um, but you know, they, they are, they are a very effective form of crowd control and especially after a
04:31major incident or something like that, you can deploy armed guards.
04:34Right.
04:34And, um, it really locks down the place.
04:36Like sometimes you get fights occur and then it looks like it's going to, it's going to lead into a
04:41full scale riot, you know?
04:42Okay.
04:42If you deploy some riot guards quickly, you can stop it.
04:45Yeah.
04:45The second most common use for them would be to deploy an armed guard all the way out here.
04:48By your entrance.
04:50Okay.
04:50Someone needs to open that door.
04:52Let's put some guards down there.
04:54What's that big weird shadow?
04:56Seems to be cast by that tree.
04:57It's a tree, isn't it?
04:59Is that tree?
04:59That tree appears to be casting a giant rectangular shadow over the area.
05:03Today's bug.
05:04So an armed guard outside your front door, for example, is a good idea because he will, you know, it
05:09stops anybody from escape.
05:10Yeah, yeah.
05:10It's like a last line of defense.
05:12It's like a base defense, you know?
05:13Yeah.
05:14And you could have him like this the whole time, I suppose.
05:19So he's weapons free now, so that means that if anyone comes into his sphere of influence, he's going to
05:25blow them away.
05:26If he sees a misbehaving prisoner, if he sees an escaping prisoner making a run for it, I've given him
05:31permission to shoot by clicking that button, right?
05:33Okay.
05:34If I unclick that button and I take away his permission to shoot, he'll stow his weapon and he'll do
05:40his best with fists.
05:42Okay.
05:42So can he only shoot like maximum security prisoners or will he just shoot anybody?
05:47He will shout warnings at prisoners if they are, like if they're smashing up their cell, he won't just walk
05:52in and blow their face off.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Okay.
05:54But on the front door?
05:55If they're escaping and if they're outside the jail, which is what this area is, he'll shoot.
06:00Okay.
06:01Because they're outside the jail, right?
06:02They're a few meters away from a full on escape.
06:05If you click the weapons free burn, he will shoot them at that point.
06:08Okay.
06:08But if you're inside the prison and a couple of prisoners start fighting, for example, he won't just go up
06:13and shoot the first and then reload and shoot the second.
06:16That wouldn't be right.
06:18No, that would be too extreme.
06:20He'll shout warnings at them.
06:21And if they attack him, he'll shoot.
06:23Yeah, that's fair enough.
06:24And if they attack staff members, he'll shoot.
06:26Okay.
06:26But the rest of the time, he'll shout warnings.
06:28What happens if staff members attack him?
06:30Well, staff members don't attack other staff members.
06:33Okay.
06:35Other than at the Christmas party.
06:37DLC, DLC.
06:39The Christmas party DLC.
06:40The Prison Architect Christmas party DLC the day after.
06:42Yeah.
06:43The armed guards all get drunk.
06:45Yeah.
06:47All right.
06:48So, shall we look at a scenario of armed guards in action?
06:51Let's turn it up to the max.
06:53Yeah.
06:53Can we turn it up to the max?
06:54The real extreme?
06:55Let's go to an extreme scenario.
07:01All right.
07:01Here we go.
07:02We have an extreme scenario here.
07:03Here's a ride underway.
07:0487 prisoners riding.
07:06We have 87 prisoners riding.
07:07More to the point, we have, these are maximum security prisoners, right?
07:10Right, right, right.
07:10You can see that they take no prisoners.
07:12Yeah.
07:12Poor guard.
07:13This is a slightly contrived riot scenario that we've created for testing purposes.
07:18Yeah.
07:18Okay.
07:19But you get the idea.
07:19These guys are not, they're not in the mood to talk.
07:23Yeah.
07:24Really.
07:25And normally you would just send your riot guards in here now, right?
07:28Riot guards is a very good way to suppress this crowd.
07:31Yeah.
07:31Okay.
07:32A very good way to stop the riot.
07:33But for the purposes of demonstrating our armed guards, I think that it's a good scenario.
07:38Well, now we've got another option, right?
07:40You can use your riot guards or you can use your armed guards.
07:43So let's send in some armed guards.
07:44Absolutely.
07:44Hoorah!
07:46Come back here.
07:47All right.
07:48So, a couple of armed guards.
07:49So let's see what happens.
07:50Let's send them in without giving them permission to fire.
07:52It's going to get messy, man.
07:53So I have not given them permission to fire.
07:55You haven't given them permission to fire.
07:57Because I want to see what happens if you don't.
07:59Thank you.
08:01So you can see that their weapons are still stowed and they're fighting with their fists.
08:05Yeah.
08:05They must be angry with you, man.
08:08I've got a shotgun on my back and I'm...
08:09Exactly.
08:10It's like, let me free, man.
08:11And now I'm unconscious.
08:12Let me free.
08:13I know.
08:13I'm injured.
08:14Give me the keys, man.
08:16Give me the keys.
08:18Oh.
08:19They're dying, man.
08:20Get them out of there.
08:21Oh.
08:22Now you may even...
08:23They did actually fire, didn't they, right?
08:25At the end there.
08:26Did they?
08:26When they feared for their lives, they got their shotguns out anyway.
08:29Even though I haven't taken the weapons free burn, if they think they're about to die, they will fire anyway.
08:35Mate, you've done an amazing thing.
08:37You've encoded human nature.
08:38I've encoded human nature.
08:39There's no point...
08:40You can't deploy an armed guard and seriously expect him not to shoot if his life's in danger.
08:45Ever, ever, ever.
08:45Yeah, yeah.
08:45So that was obviously...
08:47Well, that was a disaster.
08:49That was a catastrophe, really.
08:50And now there were shotguns in the riot.
08:54So what happens if you set them weapons free?
08:58Should we have a look?
08:59Yeah, let's have a look.
09:00Alright.
09:00This might go a little bit...
09:02Are there even any prisoners in there?
09:04Yeah.
09:05There's fog of ward out.
09:06You can't see inside.
09:07Oh, okay, okay.
09:08This might go a little bit natural born killers on us.
09:12Right, I've given them weapons free.
09:14Weapons free.
09:16Boom!
09:17There's no messing around now.
09:18Boom!
09:19Now, they still won't just shoot everyone.
09:22Oh, look at the shotgun blast in the walls.
09:24Yeah.
09:25That's wicked, man.
09:27Oh, there you go.
09:27That was a warning.
09:28He got a warning.
09:28Oh, and he didn't obey it.
09:30C%ZS is a warning, is it?
09:32That's a swear word.
09:33Okay.
09:34It's the same warning that other guards shout.
09:36Oh, see, now they're attacking the armed guards, so they're not going to get any warning.
09:40If they're attacking the armed guards, they don't get any warning.
09:42That's fair enough, I think.
09:44Yeah, absolutely.
09:45But if they're just smashing up some walls...
09:47See, the thing is, the armed guards are now just basically intimidating all the other prisoners
09:51to the extent where they've got no choice but to attack.
09:53I mean, every prisoner's attacking at this point.
09:55They're intimidating them to the point they attack?
09:57I used the wrong words there.
10:00They're angering the prisoners.
10:01Aggravating them.
10:02Aggravating them.
10:03Yeah, exactly.
10:04So this is quite an extreme scenario.
10:05It's a pretty extreme scenario.
10:07And we should make it clear, we're demonstrating the armed guards here,
10:10rather than suggesting this is a legitimate strategy.
10:14Yeah, yeah, okay.
10:14But it's probably quite good fun to play, right?
10:16It's a lot of fun to play, I've got to admit.
10:18Yeah.
10:18But this is not a good way to put down your riot.
10:21Yeah, yeah.
10:22You know this is a video where they're going to be showing and saying
10:24Prison Architect is dangerous and bad and rubbish.
10:27Yeah, exactly.
10:28This is going to be...
10:29This is what we're going to be defending.
10:30This is for our Daily Mail article, isn't it?
10:31Yeah, exactly.
10:32Exactly.
10:33Yeah.
10:33So I mean, it's a contrived extreme example with maximum security prisoners.
10:37And they did shout warnings at some of the first guys that were just smashing up their
10:41cells and things, but the warnings were not obeyed.
10:43So would I be right in thinking that if this was a minimum security ward, or wing rather,
10:49they would be more likely to comply with the warnings?
10:51Correct.
10:51And when they got the warnings, they would surrender and then they would be handcuffed.
10:55Okay, so there's a second fairly major downside to having armed guards in your prison.
11:03Right, eh?
11:05And this is what it is.
11:06Now here's a fairly ordinary prison in which we have decided to deploy armed guards.
11:11A standard prison in a neighbourhood near you.
11:13A standard test prison.
11:14What I'm going to do is I'm going to artificially spike their freedom need, which will drive
11:20them...
11:20You're going to poke them with a stick.
11:21Yeah, it will drive them up the wall.
11:25Now, while they decide to get all angry, let's talk about the armory, right?
11:31You have to have an armory on site if you want to have armed guards.
11:34I explained that earlier.
11:35You have to have weapons racks and you have to have guard lockers.
11:38What do you think the prisoners will do when there's a riot?
11:42I think they'll try and break into the armory.
11:45Here they come.
11:46Here they come.
11:46They're making a beeline for the armory.
11:48Yeah, so when there's a riot, some, not all, but your most violent, your most dangerous
11:52prisoners...
11:53Oh, that's not what you want.
11:54...will make a beeline for your armory.
11:55Oh mate, they've got through the first door.
11:57If you've secured it using a wussy green staff door...
12:00Oh no!
12:00...it won't take them very long to get in there.
12:02Oh no!
12:03And when they get in there...
12:04Oh no!
12:06Now you've got...
12:06Now you've got...
12:09Now you've got issues.
12:11Oh, that is not what you want to see.
12:13That's not what you want to see.
12:14Right.
12:15This is...
12:15We were talking about game others.
12:16Some of them have got sick shooters.
12:18Yeah, they can get shotguns, they can get pistols.
12:21Oh no!
12:22They're actually...
12:22Oh dear!
12:23They've killed that guard.
12:24So they're busting everyone out of solitary, aren't they?
12:28Yeah, yeah.
12:28Yeah, so I mean, they're still rioting, but they...
12:31During a riot or during a mass escape, the armory becomes a primary target.
12:35So anyone that's nearby, like they won't come all the way over the map for it,
12:38but anybody that's reasonably nearby the armory and is a particularly dangerous prisoner,
12:43he'll just go straight for the armory and try and break in.
12:45Shit man, so...
12:48Right, shall we look at some new other features?
12:50Yeah, that sounds good.
12:51So we've got some other things to have.
12:53We have a new room type called a forestry.
12:59Okay.
13:00And do you remember in Alpha 16, we put in the ability to chop down trees.
13:04I do remember that, yes.
13:05And then process them in your workshop.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Into planks of wood.
13:11Well now you can automate the process with the forestry.
13:14Okay.
13:14You create a forestry and you need to have gardeners.
13:16It's gardeners that do the work.
13:18Right.
13:18Eventually I am going to make it so that prisoners can work in the forestry as well.
13:22But you can see that what happens is the forestry will automatically generate a load of tree planting jobs.
13:30Okay.
13:31Like so.
13:32And a load of trees will be delivered, well tree saplings will be delivered to your jail.
13:36Yeah.
13:36And your gardeners will plant tree saplings for you.
13:39Okay.
13:39And it takes ages for tree saplings to grow now.
13:41In the last Alpha I just got it completely wrong and they grew in like a day and you could
13:44harvest millions of dollars worth of tree.
13:47Right.
13:47In like 40 hours of work.
13:49So I've changed that now.
13:51But once the trees have reached fully grown, once they've reached a fully grown age, they'll automatically be cut down.
13:58Okay.
13:59Yeah.
13:59And then the logs from the trees will be taken to your workshop and automatically processed into planks and more
14:09trees will be planted in the forestry.
14:10So it's like a sort of, it's like a, it's like a production zone basically.
14:14It's actually a very efficient way to make long-term income for your prisoner.
14:19Oh, I should mention that I've got it sped up a little bit at the moment.
14:23So that's why these are growing at a ridiculous rate.
14:27It's still growing quite quickly.
14:29Yeah.
14:29It takes five days for a tree to fully grow, but I've got it, I've got it hacked high at
14:33the moment for testing.
14:34Okay.
14:35And video making.
14:36And video making.
14:37Now we got to the point where our objects menu was getting a little bit ridiculous, right?
14:40This is the objects list for the game now.
14:43See this list?
14:44Yeah.
14:45That's just ridiculous.
14:46Yeah.
14:46And it's probably going to grow, isn't it?
14:48And it's just going to grow.
14:49And like for the, so for the armory, for example, I might not mentioned earlier that in order to have
14:53armed guards, I did mention, didn't I?
14:55That you need to have an armory with lockers and, and weapon racks.
15:00That's two more objects I had to the list.
15:02Yeah.
15:02So we did do the system whereby useful objects automatically highlight.
15:06Yeah.
15:06That already happens, but I've made another improvement, which is that the toolbar now filters based on what's useful.
15:11Okay.
15:13So this is what the objects menu looks like when it's filtered, right?
15:17Okay.
15:17So you can see as you scroll around the map, it actually changes what it shows you.
15:21Oh, wow, mate, that's good, isn't it?
15:22So here we're looking at the armory and you can see the weapons wrap and the guard locker are included.
15:26As we scroll away from the armory, they vanish and other objects highlight.
15:30Yeah.
15:30Okay.
15:31That's the shower block, here's the canteen, and it always highlights the objects that are, it always highlights and shows
15:37the objects that you need for that room type.
15:39Yeah, okay.
15:40See?
15:40So it's more like a dynamic toolbar.
15:42Yeah, that's good.
15:42Now, if you want to place an object that's not in the list, then you can just click on this
15:47little plus button and you get the full list.
15:49Okay, okay.
15:51See?
15:51That's good, mate.
15:52That's good.
15:52Nice user interface development.
15:53Yeah, nice bit of user interface.
15:55Yeah, lovely.
15:57That is pretty much all of our new features.
15:59Wow.
16:00Wow.
16:01Yep.
16:01So as always, we'd love to get your feedback on Twitter, on Facebook, on the forums, all the
16:06rest of it.
16:07Let us know what you think about this update.
16:08That was Prison Architect Alpha 17 update.
16:11If you're not already playing, you can head over to prison-architect.com and join in, or
16:16you can pick it up on Steam.
16:18Until next time, signing off.
16:26There's something like the worst armed assault ever on any building ever.
16:33Right, she didn't fire a single shot because it wasn't, they weren't shotgun shells, they
16:37were a knitted jumper like I said.
16:40And then they got beaten up.
16:42That didn't work even slightly, did it?
16:43And now their prisoners are armed now.
16:45So that's...
