00:00:00What a free throw!
00:00:01Oh my God! Oh look at that!
00:00:04Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:06Rooney Oco!
00:00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:50Evening, four matches for you on tonight's Match of the Day, including Luda's Arsenal at home to Manchester United, plus
00:00:56all of yesterday's goals from the Premier League.
00:00:59And it's all in the company of Danny Murphy and Wayne Rooney.
00:01:02And we're going to begin in North London, where Arsenal started the day four points clear at the top of
00:01:07the table.
00:01:08But could new Manchester United boss Michael Carrick make it two wins from two?
00:01:13Jonathan Pearce was at the Emirates to find out.
00:01:16A fixture echoing with legendary deeds.
00:01:20Arsenal hearts ache with title dreams and hope.
00:01:23Manchester United hope to dream again under Michael Carrick with a lot less heartache.
00:01:28Mikel Arteta chasing a 200th winner's Arsenal manager.
00:01:32Makes four changes from the Champions League win at Inter Milan.
00:01:36Incaffier is back after six weeks out with a groin injury.
00:01:39Gabriele Odegaard and Rice also return.
00:01:41Shea Seuss keeps his place up front after scoring two at San Siro.
00:01:45Michael Carrick names an unchanged side for the Manchester City victory, noting real positivity in midweek training.
00:01:52Dallow makes his 300th career appearance.
00:01:55They're without a win in six Premier League meetings with Arsenal.
00:01:58They've never gone seven without a victory.
00:02:02It is a fixture that has settled titles and turned mere mortals into legends.
00:02:08It could be settled today, you know, by set pieces.
00:02:11Manchester United have scored from 13, only bettered by Arsenal's 14.
00:02:18He'll switch to Saka if he can keep it in play.
00:02:21And he does.
00:02:23And Dogu was wrong-footed.
00:02:31And he was well placed to get the block in there.
00:02:34How on earth was he left out for so long this season?
00:02:37Saka taking on Dogu, got the beating of him.
00:02:40It's going to be a corner for Arsenal.
00:02:43I just wonder whether he was clipped as he made this run against Dogu.
00:02:47He bumped there.
00:02:49And he stayed on his feet.
00:02:51That was a foul tackle.
00:02:53Well done, Saka.
00:02:55Two in on the goalkeeper.
00:02:58Went in rather flat.
00:03:00Headed down, not away.
00:03:01And then toss out up and over.
00:03:05Scores Michael goals for them.
00:03:07That's half a dozen this season.
00:03:09And he has beaten Arsenal as a Manchester United manager of sorts.
00:03:153-2.
00:03:16December the 21st, it was.
00:03:18Back in his previous spell as caretaker manager in 2021.
00:03:27Chase has played it into timber.
00:03:29It's come away.
00:03:29Here's Dogu.
00:03:30Roll on back by Odegaard.
00:03:32Now Saka.
00:03:36Didn't get a shout at the Dogu was coming, but he clipped his heels.
00:03:40Didn't need to make the challenge like that.
00:03:42Reached for the ball.
00:03:44Struck for it.
00:03:45Needlessly, really, because the covering defender was there.
00:03:49Free kick to Arsenal in a dangerous position.
00:03:5117 minutes gone.
00:03:53Manchester United with everyone back in or around their own penalty area.
00:03:58Weiss plays it in.
00:04:00Keeper thought about coming.
00:04:01Didn't, but then makes a brilliant save.
00:04:04Superstop by Samuel Amets.
00:04:07Supermendi up in the mix.
00:04:10Rose the highest.
00:04:12Just might have glanced off Casemiro as well.
00:04:15Good save.
00:04:17Arsenal have squandered recent chances to extend their lead at the top.
00:04:22Home draw here against Liverpool.
00:04:23For the 0-0 away at Forest.
00:04:26Now in Capier.
00:04:30Deep cross looking for Saka.
00:04:32Dogu got it away.
00:04:33Only to the England winger.
00:04:36Oh, he did really well Odegaard.
00:04:37Swanson in.
00:04:38He's gone in.
00:04:39Arsenal lead.
00:04:42May well have gone in off Martinez.
00:04:46Timber is in there to take the acclaim.
00:04:49Arsenal deservedly ahead.
00:04:52I think from the sheepish look on the face of
00:04:55Isandra Martinez,
00:04:56who may well have gone off him,
00:04:57but we'll wait and see.
00:04:59Lovely little dink ball by Saka involved in this.
00:05:03That's delightful.
00:05:05Slanted on by Odegaard.
00:05:08He goes off the back of his heel.
00:05:10Martinez.
00:05:11You can see it from that slow-mo.
00:05:13And Arsenal lead.
00:05:17Here's Timber.
00:05:23Fernandes.
00:05:24And all of a sudden,
00:05:25Manchester United are breaking away and countering.
00:05:27They're looking for the equaliser.
00:05:29And Boomer checks back.
00:05:30When a Fernandes arrives.
00:05:32Powerful drive away.
00:05:33That's their first effort.
00:05:36Did well initially in Boomer.
00:05:39Saliba defended excellently against him.
00:05:41I'm happy the chance was given in the first place though,
00:05:45the manager.
00:05:47They say the Arsenal-Manchester United fixture
00:05:50doesn't carry the meaning of yesteryear.
00:05:52Try telling it to those players and everyone inside this ground.
00:05:55It is still an historic rivalry.
00:05:59That's a chance for Manchester United to the other.
00:06:02And Fernandes.
00:06:02And a brilliant, brilliant challenge by Saliba.
00:06:05And a goal kick is given to the constellation of Bruno Fernandes.
00:06:10Saliba touches it onto his boot.
00:06:12And that's wide by Fernandes.
00:06:15He's had two opportunities now.
00:06:18From similar range.
00:06:21The pressure on Saliba.
00:06:23Zubimendi's given it away.
00:06:24Here's in Boomer.
00:06:25Around the keeper.
00:06:271-1.
00:06:28And Arsenal gifted Manchester United the equaliser.
00:06:32A horror moment for Martin Zubimendi.
00:06:36And then Boomer accepted the gift.
00:06:39It wasn't the best of all Zinter Saliba in the first place.
00:06:41His return was really misplaced.
00:06:44But that's horrible from Zubimendi.
00:06:46You can't excuse his back pass.
00:06:48And in went and Boomer.
00:06:50Really well taken by the summer signing from Brentford for his ninth of the campaign.
00:06:56No sign of unbridled joy on the face of Michael Carrick.
00:07:02Too many unforced errors from Arsenal at the moment.
00:07:05And Boomer goes for the lob.
00:07:07It's really clever.
00:07:09And he wasn't far away.
00:07:11Fine, fine effort from Brian and Boomer.
00:07:17Great roars from the Manchester United fans in the far corner of the ground.
00:07:21I like what they're saying about this Manchester United side.
00:07:24On the back of that tremendous win last week.
00:07:28Dorgu.
00:07:29Well played Manchester United this.
00:07:31Bruno Fernandes.
00:07:32Back to Dorgu.
00:07:33Shooting chance.
00:07:34Brilliant goal.
00:07:35Manchester United lead at the league leaders.
00:07:38That is a brilliant goal by Dorgu.
00:07:41That is a brilliant goal by Dorgu.
00:07:42Not just the finish but the build up as well.
00:07:45And Manchester United have turned this game on its head.
00:07:48They're checking for a possible hand ball in the build up.
00:07:52His left arm low by his side.
00:07:55Did he push the ball on with his arm?
00:07:58It's a brilliant strike mind you.
00:07:59Dorgu.
00:08:00Veering away from Ryan who had no chance.
00:08:03The goal is going to be given I think.
00:08:05VAR has said it's inconclusive whether the ball hit his arm or his hip.
00:08:09Manchester United lead at Arsenal 2-1.
00:08:12This is a picture that has settled the league title in the past.
00:08:16Won't settle this one but it will be a huge dent in Arsenal's title aspirations.
00:08:24Here's Dorgu again.
00:08:27And he crapped the shot away.
00:08:29He's got a turn of pace.
00:08:31And even if you've got the best defence in the land.
00:08:34Pace will trouble you.
00:08:37And it's troubling Arsenal right now.
00:08:44Here's Saka.
00:08:45Is he being pulled back by Shaw?
00:08:48If I thought so.
00:08:50He finds Rice with the hit.
00:08:54There were short odds on favourites to win this one today.
00:08:58Manchester United were generous outsiders with the bookies.
00:09:06Dorgu battling.
00:09:08Rice gives it the big welly.
00:09:13Jokeres gets beyond Martinez.
00:09:15Strength paid off there.
00:09:17Headed out by Maguire.
00:09:19Saka to Eze.
00:09:20The set-up.
00:09:21Mourinho went to pace it.
00:09:22Deflected.
00:09:22Arsenal won a penalty for Handball.
00:09:25Maguire immediately waved away the...
00:09:28The appeals.
00:09:30Well, his hand certainly made contact with the ball.
00:09:34But he was dropping.
00:09:36It is a supporting hand according to VAR playoff.
00:09:39Thierry Henry.
00:09:41Looks flummoxed up there.
00:09:43Ian Wright.
00:09:45Looking Worry.
00:09:48Here's Saka with the cross.
00:09:49Oh, it's a delightful one.
00:09:50Met in the air by Jokeres but over.
00:09:54Arsenal won the corner.
00:09:56From the loop of the ball it looked likely.
00:10:00Came off his shoulder though.
00:10:02That's why it looped up.
00:10:03It wasn't a good header.
00:10:05It's the long and short of it.
00:10:06Oh!
00:10:10By Saliba to Saka.
00:10:13Goes for the near post.
00:10:16Cunning effort.
00:10:18Tried to catch the goalkeeper out but he's had a fine game, Lammans.
00:10:23Good goalkeeping.
00:10:25Made sure he pushed it round the corner.
00:10:28Saka with the corner kick.
00:10:30Lammans comes again.
00:10:31Doesn't get there.
00:10:32It's up the line.
00:10:33It's surely in.
00:10:34Arsenal think it's in.
00:10:35And the referee agrees.
00:10:38Mourinho I think got the last shot.
00:10:422-2.
00:10:44Lammans has been a hero for Manchester United but he flattened this.
00:10:48Lammans under pressure.
00:10:50Kane couldn't get.
00:10:52And Mourinho poked it in.
00:10:53He was clearly over the line before Szczesko got it out.
00:10:57It's 2-2.
00:10:59And an Arsenal set piece finally pays off.
00:11:01And Mourinho's sixth of this campaign.
00:11:05Makes it.
00:11:06Arsenal 2.
00:11:07Manchester United 2.
00:11:08It has been a terrific game.
00:11:10We remember the battle in the Highbury Tunnel on Pete Sergate and...
00:11:15Britt van Nistelrooy and Martin Keown and...
00:11:18We remember Arsenal winning the title at Old Trafford and we remember Manchester United.
00:11:24The FA Cup semi-final sensational Ryan Giggs goal.
00:11:28So much history between these two sides.
00:11:33Here's Bruno Fernandes.
00:11:36Mourinho helped it on.
00:11:37Can they get the winner here now?
00:11:38It's a shot from Rennes.
00:11:40It's a shot from Rennes!
00:11:40Oh my goodness me!
00:11:42That is a sensational goal by Matthias Cunha!
00:11:48And Manchester United a 3-2 up!
00:11:53Outrageous!
00:11:56Seconds after Arsenal are back into it!
00:11:58And Manchester United are ahead again.
00:12:01Manchester United surely have got the winner here.
00:12:05They've had three shots on target on making in the game and they've scored for all of them.
00:12:10That's some goal.
00:12:11When he picks it up there surely he's not going to shoot.
00:12:13Yes he is!
00:12:15Well that is a goal worthy of winning any occasion let alone an Arsenal Manchester United game.
00:12:21Well they say they're not going to go down the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer route again.
00:12:26And if Michael Carrick continues to rejuvenate Manchester United like this he has to be in the mix.
00:12:32You've got seconds of the seven minutes of stoppage time to go.
00:12:35Oh!
00:12:37Moreno battles.
00:12:38Jokeres with the pressure on the defender.
00:12:40Can he turn it square?
00:12:41It's too high!
00:12:43Free kick against him anyway.
00:12:45And that surely is the last attack of the game.
00:12:48Battled hard to get there.
00:12:50There was a little push though.
00:12:51On Martinez.
00:12:56Manchester United have come to the league leaders.
00:12:58And have won the game by three goals for two famously.
00:13:02It's two victories in two for Michael Carrick.
00:13:05A real blow here for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.
00:13:09They'll stay top of the table.
00:13:11The real winners in the league title chase Manchester City.
00:13:14The winners at the Emirates here tonight.
00:13:16Manchester United.
00:13:18Famously by three goals for two.
00:13:21Sensational.
00:13:22Credit to the boys.
00:13:23So proud of them.
00:13:25We had to sustain some attacks especially earlier on.
00:13:29We grew into the game.
00:13:30Had a setback.
00:13:31Come back strong.
00:13:32Had a setback towards the end.
00:13:33Come back strong.
00:13:35Someone yelling to the game that were good.
00:13:37You know, we're so fresh with it.
00:13:40It's ten days into games and it's never going to be perfect at this stage.
00:13:43Especially coming against a team like Arsenal.
00:13:46The boys have been fantastic, you know, in terms of taking everything on and wanting to do it and being
00:13:50invested into it.
00:13:51And we can see what it means to them at the end.
00:13:53First of all, we have to give credit to Manchester United.
00:13:56Obviously, we give them a goal, which is unusual and painful.
00:14:00And then they have two brilliant moments when they have incredible strikes from DH.
00:14:06And when we lose a game, I take the responsibility and we have to protect the players.
00:14:10We had a lot of giveaways that gave them the momentum to run and then we know the quality they
00:14:15have to do that.
00:14:16That was probably their game plan as well, to do that.
00:14:19And we let them do that a bit too easily at times.
00:14:21When you picked the ball up on that far side, what were you thinking?
00:14:26What did you think?
00:14:27I think I need to score.
00:14:29What has Michael Carrick and the coaching team done?
00:14:31It seems you've got a weight lifted off your shoulders and it seems the whole team believes now.
00:14:36He knows the feeling for United.
00:14:38He knows what the fans need to feel.
00:14:41So, he tried to show us every single moment.
00:14:44He tried to talk with us to understand the moments and then say everyone is against us.
00:14:49So, I think we feel more together and then we come for every single game to win the games.
00:14:53Does this start two wins in two against big, big opponents?
00:14:57Change your views on the job more permanently?
00:15:01Nothing has changed.
00:15:02You know, I've been here less than two weeks and I'm just desperate to do well and improve the team
00:15:05and finish as high as we can.
00:15:07And having days like this and last week is something you get greedy for and you want a little bit
00:15:13more and we need to keep building on this in the weeks that come.
00:15:15The margins are very small. We made them even smaller today in the manner that we did certain things against
00:15:20Man Utd.
00:15:22And now it's time to react. Now we have to see what we are made of and react and the
00:15:26first game is in the Champions League.
00:15:29Well, it was a really enjoyable game at the Emirates for pretty much everybody except Arsenal fans.
00:15:34Manchester United definitely played their part in that and we will talk about them shortly.
00:15:38But it's just two points in the last nine now for Arsenal.
00:15:41If Arsenal fans are starting to get nervous, how concerned should they be, Wayne?
00:15:46Yeah, I think they should be concerned because I think over the last few seasons, Arsenal have been in some
00:15:51really good positions and the fans, they've seen this happen before.
00:15:56So, you know, these bad memories are coming back and I think over the last three games, picking up two
00:16:00points will be a concern for not just the fans, but the players and the manager.
00:16:05I actually think it will give them a jolt, a gentle reminder they're not going to have it all their
00:16:09own way.
00:16:11I don't fear for them as much as Wayne may be and I have to say, they came up against
00:16:16the Manchester United team today.
00:16:18Brilliant performance, their top players all played well, although it pains me to say it, they did.
00:16:23They played really, really well.
00:16:25And sometimes if you're not quite out and you come up against a side who are banging form, you lose
00:16:29and they can't win every week.
00:16:30They're going to have to have these little blips along the way, but I think they'll bounce back.
00:16:34They did start really well though, Arsenal, so what changed, Wayne?
00:16:37Yeah, Arsenal started the game really well and I think from there they may be a little bit complacent.
00:16:42So, if we take a look here, this is after they went 1-0 up and you look at Gabriel
00:16:47and Saliba who've been brilliant all season,
00:16:48but the distance between them is way too big.
00:16:51It's a great pass from Bruno, but the distance is too big.
00:16:53And then Gabriel does something which I don't think I've seen him do this season or do many times.
00:16:57He steps forward trying to play offside and Bruno goes through, he has a great opportunity.
00:17:01Similar to his goal last week, he should shoot, he doesn't, but that was a warning time for Arsenal after
00:17:06they went 1-0 up.
00:17:07And then here you can see the frustration.
00:17:09And then if we look here, Cobie Maynou, Odegaard's with Maynou.
00:17:13Man United in controlled possession, Odegaard goes and presses, but no one comes with him.
00:17:17The back line drop off, the midfield drop off, and that allows Cobie Maynou to be in acres of space
00:17:21to do what he wants with the ball.
00:17:23Embumo's in a good position, and Gabriel should go tight. That's what he's known for, that's what he does.
00:17:29He doesn't, he drops off, plays a through ball, and then Saliba doesn't know anyone's behind him.
00:17:35So the lack of communication is there. And then here, this is a big worry. Saliba's got the ball.
00:17:40There's no movement in front of him whatsoever. You see him with his arms out, he's asking for movement.
00:17:44Zubin Mendy then gives him a little bit of movement, but it's slow. It's not moving Man United around.
00:17:48Declan Rice comes to get on the ball. Now Declan Rice wants the ball playing in the space.
00:17:53But Zubin Mendy doesn't give him it. He plays safe. He goes back to Saliba.
00:17:57Odegaard then should come to show for the ball and get on it, but he doesn't. He stays away from
00:18:01the ball.
00:18:01Saliba then has to go back into Zubin Mendy, who plays a terrible pass, big mistake.
00:18:06And Bumont gets the ball, and he gets Man United back into the game.
00:18:09So I think after they went 1-0 up, they went safe. They didn't really then go and attack Man
00:18:15United
00:18:16and allowed them back in the game, and ultimately they've lost the game because of it.
00:18:20That safety plan from Arsenal, is that sort of playing into the fact that they aren't getting these goals from
00:18:27open play, Danny?
00:18:28Because when Arsenal do well, we praise them for how effective they are from set pieces.
00:18:33When they don't do so well, we look at the fact that they can't really score from open play.
00:18:37They're as low down as 17th in terms of the percentage of goals that come from open play.
00:18:43Is that a worry for you, do you think?
00:18:45It's becoming more of a concern.
00:18:46Even though they're second for goals scored overall in the Premier League?
00:18:49Yeah, but they're so heavily relying on set plays.
00:18:51I don't think Wayne or I realise they were 17th in open play.
00:18:55And they've spent a lot of money on players to supplement what's already a good forward line.
00:18:59Nobody's won the Premier League with a goalscorer who hasn't got 13 goals.
00:19:04I think it was Man City and Chelsea, Gundogan and Lampard in years gone by.
00:19:08They've got Jocarez and Trossard with five.
00:19:12Now, they might break this rule because they are so good at set plays.
00:19:15Probably the best we've ever seen. They might.
00:19:17But it must be a concern for Arteta that he's got this abundance of talent in forward areas and can't
00:19:23seem to get the creative element to them to score the goals.
00:19:26It's becoming no goals against Forest, no goals against Liverpool.
00:19:30They had an own goal today in a set play.
00:19:32It's got to get better.
00:19:33Arsenal then looking to improve as they push for that Premier League title.
00:19:38For Manchester United, it's just a second game under Michael Carrick.
00:19:42And yet we're starting to see some kind of shoots of recovery from them.
00:19:46And Bruno Fernandes right at the front of that, Danny.
00:19:49Well, he's a phenomenal player, but he wasn't the only one.
00:19:51Senior players like Maguire, Casemiro, and Bruno has led the line twice now beautifully.
00:19:56You know, done really well, like really comfortable with it.
00:19:59Martinez is back in there. The keeper's settled in.
00:20:02But they look happier. Their body language is good.
00:20:05They all want the ball.
00:20:06They're all trusting each other with the ball more, more confidence.
00:20:11Bruno is brilliant wherever he plays technically.
00:20:13Defensively, when he plays deeper, he can be found out.
00:20:16But in this role in the last two games, back as a ten,
00:20:19you can see him scanning there just before he gets the ball.
00:20:22He's got the pictures.
00:20:23His awareness of where players are.
00:20:25His fitness is tremendous.
00:20:27He's always moving to try and make space.
00:20:29And I like the variation in his game.
00:20:31He's brave with his passes when he needs to be.
00:20:33He'll try and make that.
00:20:34That's just a superb play.
00:20:35Gets United on another attack.
00:20:37But he's also good at dictating.
00:20:39He knows when to slow it down.
00:20:41But he's brave.
00:20:41And I think he's probably one of the best in Europe, actually,
00:20:45at making chances and being brave with his passing.
00:20:48He doesn't care about making mistakes.
00:20:52This little give and go is always in the right place.
00:20:55OK, it's a brilliant finish,
00:20:57but he doesn't get that ball back if it isn't Bruno.
00:21:00That awareness again.
00:21:01And this is probably my favourite clip.
00:21:03It's calm.
00:21:06Composed.
00:21:08Keeping his team on the ball.
00:21:09Frustrating Arsenal.
00:21:10Probing.
00:21:11Just dictating the tempo of it and the pace of it.
00:21:14And that's the experience and the know-how of a player like Bruno.
00:21:18And also, he's come back from an injury just recently
00:21:20and just hit the ground running again.
00:21:22Clever passes like that.
00:21:23Under pressure.
00:21:24We'll flip it in behind because they're pressing us high.
00:21:28And then this here.
00:21:29Most players here in behind.
00:21:31Be safe.
00:21:31You're going to get this.
00:21:32Players closing you down.
00:21:33You're going to lose it.
00:21:33The extra touch he took there into Mainu.
00:21:36Then ends up with Cunha.
00:21:38Another brilliant finish.
00:21:39But I could have picked a few players today to do a piece on,
00:21:42but I think he deserves the plaudits
00:21:45because he's just that little bit above in terms of his levels
00:21:47and his game management.
00:21:49Superb.
00:21:49The other person who's getting a lot of plaudits is Michael Carrick.
00:21:52Players are always going to praise a new manager
00:21:54because they want to get on the right side of him.
00:21:57But Mateus Cunha absolutely glowing in his praise of Carrick.
00:22:01Lissandra Martinez has already posted on social media
00:22:03talking about the work that Carrick and his backroom team do as well.
00:22:08You know him.
00:22:09What's he been doing to get this performance out of Manchester United?
00:22:13I think a level of calmness, I think,
00:22:17which hasn't been there, I think, for quite a while now.
00:22:20I think when you look at Michael Carrick,
00:22:22you think, oh, he's a quiet lad.
00:22:24He studied the game, he understands the game,
00:22:26and he's gone into that job and knowing it's a difficult job to do.
00:22:30But what he's done, he's brought the basics back to Manchester United
00:22:32and players working hard, players getting behind the ball,
00:22:36the running for each other, the working together for each other,
00:22:39and they're more confident.
00:22:40Certainly after the last weekend's win, they're more confident.
00:22:43I actually seen him on Saturday morning
00:22:46and he said to me he had to stop training,
00:22:48the training was that good.
00:22:49He wanted to tie and bottle it up
00:22:52and make sure they had that performance for the game the following day,
00:22:54which obviously we see and we did.
00:22:56But I think he's done superb,
00:22:58and I'm absolutely delighted for him.
00:23:00I think one part of that, though, must be,
00:23:01and you can tell me better,
00:23:03but he must be communicating with the players better
00:23:05in terms of freeing them up.
00:23:06Because when I talk about body language,
00:23:08players being more confident on the ball,
00:23:10that comes from your leader giving you that freedom.
00:23:13And maybe before it was more rigid in the hammering system.
00:23:16We don't know.
00:23:17But is he a good communicator in that respect?
00:23:20Unbelievable communicator.
00:23:21And I think for the best managers,
00:23:23what you need to do is make sure every player,
00:23:26as you said about Cunha,
00:23:27every player is happy and wants to play for you.
00:23:29And I think the last two weeks have really shown that,
00:23:32and Cunha's come off the bench twice,
00:23:33and he's had the impact of his assist for Mason Mount,
00:23:36and obviously is winning goal today.
00:23:37So his communication will be spot on.
00:23:40Because the question about Manchester United has always been,
00:23:42how good is this squad?
00:23:44How good are the players that Manchester United have at their disposal?
00:23:47And you can see the difference that those sort of intangible things
00:23:51like confidence, like belief, can do to a squad.
00:23:55And that's almost the hardest job for a manager.
00:23:58And you can go in and you can work on set pieces,
00:24:01or you can work on certain tactics or shape,
00:24:03but confidence seems to be the hardest one.
00:24:05Yeah, confidence.
00:24:06But he's given belief into that group of players, I think.
00:24:10Sometimes with young coaches,
00:24:11and I think with Rupert Amman, when he was at the time,
00:24:15sometimes coaches are guilty of over-complicating things.
00:24:18Yeah, too much information.
00:24:18Sometimes give the players too much information.
00:24:21I think what Michael's done, he's gone in,
00:24:22he's given them not so much information,
00:24:24but actually just reminded them of the basics,
00:24:26what I spoke of before, of making sure you do that right.
00:24:29And then they have got good players in there who can win games.
00:24:31Dawg is the best example of that.
00:24:33The last two games, he's been absolutely amazing.
00:24:36It looks like he's just playing freedom.
00:24:38He's all over the place.
00:24:39Scoring goals, making things happen, enjoying himself.
00:24:42That's football, it's a crazy season at the moment.
00:24:45And the ups and downs of teams, especially Man United,
00:24:48is making our job more interesting, I suppose.
00:24:51The other thing that's making it more interesting is speculation
00:24:53about what happens at the end of the season with Manchester United.
00:24:56And the club were very careful not to give, I'm not, listen.
00:25:00Wait till you've heard the question first.
00:25:02The club have been very careful not to make him like the interim
00:25:04or the caretaker manager.
00:25:06They said, he's got the job till the end of the season.
00:25:09After that, there will be a longer term manager in place.
00:25:12If it carries on like that, do you think that he, if he continues like this,
00:25:18could he be the right man for the job?
00:25:20Of course he can.
00:25:21I think, listen, Michael Carrick's got an opportunity to show everyone,
00:25:27to show Manchester United that he's capable of doing that job.
00:25:30And what we've seen in the last two weeks, of course,
00:25:33he has to have a consistency about his results and performances.
00:25:36But what we've seen is he's very capable of doing it.
00:25:39And if it carries on like this, there will be a massive pressure
00:25:42on Manchester United board to put him in at the end of the season.
00:25:45I know they've been there with Oli before,
00:25:48but I think this feels a little bit different.
00:25:51You never know.
00:25:52You never know. You never know.
00:25:54Watch this space.
00:25:55It is 18 games since Newcastle last lost at home in the league
00:25:59to Aston Villa, who are without a goal in two matches.
00:26:03Commentary comes from Alistair Mann.
00:26:06Newcastle had three players sent off on the day Aston Villa last won a league game here.
00:26:12But today the hosts are blighted by injury,
00:26:14with Bruno Guimaraes a notable absentee,
00:26:17particularly given Newcastle haven't won a single league match
00:26:21that he's missed since he signed four years ago.
00:26:24Villa are also depleted with John McGinn, a latest casualty,
00:26:28opportunity knocks for Jadon Sancho, who starts only his third league game for the club,
00:26:34fresh from having registered his first Villa goal in the Europa League on Thursday.
00:26:41Two sides who advance their European ambitions in midweek,
00:26:46are now looking to improve on disappointing results domestically last weekend.
00:26:52Barnes towards Joe Linton, breaks for him.
00:26:55A little bit of space for Tonali, and he tries to exploit it, and he almost does!
00:27:00And it's just saved, and I mean just, by Martinez.
00:27:05A brilliant start for Tonali.
00:27:08And Martinez, just for a moment, you weren't sure where it was going after he made the block.
00:27:17Here's Gordon.
00:27:22Villa winning it back, Sancho's pass, and it is going to find its way through,
00:27:27and Watkins is denied by the legs of Nick Pope.
00:27:32It was a nice ball from Sancho, and Tiao just couldn't get a telling enough touch on it.
00:27:41Here is Rodgers.
00:27:44Tonali with a foot in.
00:27:46Matson.
00:27:48Watkins.
00:27:49Buendia.
00:27:51Great ball.
00:27:52Kashkin advance here.
00:27:54To be fair, Gordon tracked him on Arna.
00:27:58Tielemans.
00:27:59Rodgers.
00:28:00Buendia.
00:28:01It's a great effort.
00:28:02It's a sweet, sweet goal from Emi Buendia.
00:28:06Well, you just knew there was a goal coming.
00:28:08This game has been full of chances.
00:28:10So far, the goalkeepers have been on top until now.
00:28:15And Emi Buendia, at the end in which the Villa fans are congregated in the top tier,
00:28:21and Emi Buendia are celebrating.
00:28:24Fabulous goal from Emi Buendia.
00:28:31Tonali, Joe Linton.
00:28:35Difficult man to dispossess, but Onana did so.
00:28:39And then, well, there are two Aston Villa players who've gone down.
00:28:43Both Onana and Kash as Watkins comes forward.
00:28:46Can't control the ball.
00:28:48And at the moment, Villa are down to ninth.
00:28:52Both Onana and Kash have stayed down in a heap on the floor.
00:28:58Joe Linton's going to get carded for the challenge, I think.
00:29:03This is the first one on Onana.
00:29:07There.
00:29:09And the second one on Kash seems all right.
00:29:15Joe Linton is a man on a mission whenever he plays for Newcastle.
00:29:23Tonali brings in Anthony Gordon towards Whissa.
00:29:30Reaches Barnes.
00:29:33Trippier.
00:29:35Miley.
00:29:36Tonali leaves it.
00:29:38Joe Linton closed off by Tielemans.
00:29:41Bottman wins it back.
00:29:44Now Gordon.
00:29:49Towards Miley.
00:29:50Brilliant save.
00:29:52Outstanding save from Emi Martinez.
00:29:58And Miley's header.
00:30:00Looked destined for the top corner.
00:30:04Well, Newcastle have scored at least two goals in each of their last eight Premier League games here at St.
00:30:11James' Park.
00:30:14Good ball.
00:30:15Whissa.
00:30:16He's got beyond Onana.
00:30:18And then Onana held him up.
00:30:24Here's Hall.
00:30:29Barnes.
00:30:31Deflection.
00:30:32And it dips over the bar.
00:30:36Well, Martinez has made some great saves in the game.
00:30:39I don't think he could have got near this.
00:30:45To Nali.
00:30:49Miley.
00:30:50It's a Super Bowl.
00:30:52Barnes.
00:30:53Right across the face of the goal.
00:30:56And Gordon puts it wide.
00:30:58It was a terrific break.
00:31:01Gordon at the far.
00:31:03Maybe Barnes would have been the better one.
00:31:08Bottman.
00:31:09We're inside the last five minutes now.
00:31:15Miley.
00:31:16Hall.
00:31:19Oh, it's gone straight to Watkins.
00:31:21Sloppy from Hall.
00:31:23And Watkins.
00:31:24Oh, it's a super save by Pope.
00:31:27Brilliant hit by Watkins.
00:31:30And Pope with a firm palm to his right-hand side.
00:31:35Managing to help it over the bar.
00:31:39Lucadine with the corner.
00:31:43Hedder away by Trippier.
00:31:48Rogers.
00:31:49It's a good ball.
00:31:51Dean.
00:31:52Oh, it must be this time.
00:31:54It is from Watkins.
00:31:56And the game is over now.
00:31:59Well, he only moments ago was denied by a brilliant save by Nick Pope.
00:32:05But now both he and Unai Emre can genuinely celebrate.
00:32:10There are very few teams who've come to this fortress and emerge victorious this season.
00:32:18And Watkins, who was denied by a fantastic save by Pope, then scores from the resulting corner.
00:32:28Newcastle 0-0.
00:32:29Aston Villa 2.
00:32:32We performed fantastic as well in the final match on Thursday in the Europe League.
00:32:37And today in the league, keep demanding ourselves.
00:32:40And we did it this week after the match we lost against Everton.
00:32:44We did it.
00:32:44And the players respond fantastic in every work we prepared.
00:32:47And then on the field, they are protagonists and they show their qualities, their attitude.
00:32:54Through this attitude and commitment overall with the stutu we have, we are building, every player did it.
00:33:03Bright start, Sandro goes through and that was a top save.
00:33:07Then I think Gaston Villa were probably the better team in that first half and had a number of long
00:33:12shots.
00:33:12They scored from one and then we're chasing the game.
00:33:14I thought we chased it really well second half and we're disappointed with ourselves that we've lost that game.
00:33:19We know it's a tough schedule for us, but it's what we want to do.
00:33:25We want to play European competitions.
00:33:26We want to fight for these places in Premier League.
00:33:29So we have to adapt, we have to fight, we have to play and reset and recover and go again.
00:33:35So I think I'm really proud of this team.
00:33:39Well, that win for Aston Villa coupled with the defeat for Arsenal means that they, along with Manchester City, are
00:33:45just four points off the league leaders.
00:33:47It's been a couple of games where they haven't scored, but did that front four look a bit more like
00:33:53their old selves?
00:33:54They really did and the way he sets up the team, the system he plays relies heavily on that front
00:34:00four playing well.
00:34:02The wide men coming in, into those little pockets to support Morgan Rodgers and Buendia and Sancho did really well
00:34:09today.
00:34:09Newcastle struggled with it.
00:34:11Here we can see Rodgers on the ball.
00:34:12Buendia is tucked in off the left, getting close to him.
00:34:15Sancho's there as well.
00:34:16And when Buendia gets, he tries one early, this is early in the game, just a little warning.
00:34:21They overload that middle of the pitch.
00:34:23It's really hard for Newcastle's midfield to pick them up.
00:34:25You can see Sancho now on the ball in the middle.
00:34:28Buendia is near him.
00:34:29Watkins playing off the back of shoulder, on the people's shoulders, gets in behind.
00:34:33Brilliant save from Pope.
00:34:35And they grew in confidence.
00:34:36Buendia especially.
00:34:37Rodgers is always superb, we know that.
00:34:39He loves getting in these positions.
00:34:40Great athlete, runs, travels with the ball well.
00:34:43He's got great awareness.
00:34:44Watkins as well.
00:34:45He's a willing runner, non-stop.
00:34:47But as he gets to the side here, and he does his bit of skill, you can see that Buendia
00:34:51and Sancho are really central in great areas.
00:34:53Maybe they should be attacking the ball a little bit more, as you can see there.
00:34:56But never stuck out wide.
00:34:58Never doing nothing.
00:35:00And that's the manager coaching and working on it time and time again.
00:35:03Watkins' little rotation of position, running the channels down the left.
00:35:06Buendia pops up in that little position again, on another attack.
00:35:10And this first half was relentless for a period.
00:35:12And when the ball comes in, the midfield, I think it's Tonali there.
00:35:15He's got Rodgers on his right shoulder and Buendia on his left.
00:35:18It's so hard to mark.
00:35:20You've got to be really disciplined.
00:35:22And again, Buendia picking up the ball.
00:35:24Tonali's had to come across.
00:35:26He's on his own.
00:35:26Rodgers in the space where Tonali had to leave to come and pick up Buendia.
00:35:31And by the time he gets to Buendia again, he should do better and really be testing Pope better than
00:35:35that.
00:35:36But it was a really good first half performance.
00:35:39Now, second half was more about Watkins.
00:35:41Left a bit more isolated because Newcastle were pushing on.
00:35:44He looks fit.
00:35:45He looks confident.
00:35:47He's obviously playing for his World Cup place and he got his just rewards for his performance today.
00:35:53It falls out.
00:35:54There's Rodgers again.
00:35:55The awareness I'm talking about.
00:35:56Super little ball out to Dean.
00:35:59And then, although, poor defender from Newcastle ball watching.
00:36:01But look at Watkins on the back post.
00:36:03Still willing to get in there.
00:36:04Get his goal.
00:36:06And, yeah, good reaction from Villa after last week.
00:36:10Where, even in the Everton game, we did well against them.
00:36:12They did create chances.
00:36:13But that front four, although Sancho's come in from McGinn,
00:36:17they're a handful to play against.
00:36:19Really, really well coached.
00:36:20And it was difficult for Newcastle because there was no Bruno Guimaraes in the starting line-up.
00:36:26And in the nine games that he's missed since he signed for Newcastle,
00:36:30they haven't won a single one of them.
00:36:32You can see the stark contrast between the games that he takes part in
00:36:36and the games that he doesn't take part in.
00:36:38But that's not the whole story to this defeat, Wayne.
00:36:42No, I think Newcastle were a little bit flat today.
00:36:44As Danny said, Aston Villa are a good team.
00:36:46They're hard to play against.
00:36:47But, you know, and of course, they'll miss Bruno.
00:36:49He's a fantastic player.
00:36:50But it's an opportunity for other players to come in and, you know,
00:36:53and go and show the managers that they want to play
00:36:54and they deserve to play in the team.
00:36:55So, I think this season, Newcastle have been a little bit different
00:36:58to what they have the last couple of seasons.
00:37:00And they seem like they're going a little bit flat,
00:37:03which is very rare to say about Newcastle with that fan base behind them.
00:37:06And actually, as well, I mean, we could look at the European campaign
00:37:09and see is that affecting them.
00:37:11But they've got the best squad they've had in the last few years
00:37:13in terms of strength and depth.
00:37:15So, you expect a bit more from them.
00:37:16Yeah, it's a disappointing performance from them today.
00:37:19Now, the focus was on the two managers at Selhurst Park,
00:37:22where despite his comments last week,
00:37:25Oliver Glasner is still in charge at Crystal Palace,
00:37:27whilst Liam Ross Sr. was looking for back-to-back league wins with Chelsea.
00:37:31Your commentator is Guy Mowbray.
00:37:35One boss, who we know is close to the end of his tenure,
00:37:39with many surprised he's still in charge today.
00:37:41The other only just acting out his first scenes
00:37:44in the never-ending Premier League management drama.
00:37:48Break a leg, Liam, so to speak.
00:37:50Palace have the much-miss Daniel Munoz back
00:37:53for his first appearance since early December,
00:37:55and Ismail Assar returns from African Nations success with Senegal.
00:37:59And Jean-Philippe Matata plays,
00:38:01having this week stated his desire to leave the club.
00:38:05For Chelsea, six changes from Wednesday's win against Paphos,
00:38:09two at the top end of things,
00:38:11as João Pedro comes back in,
00:38:12and Estevão is in to start as well.
00:38:15Both made their Chelsea Premier League debuts
00:38:17when these sides met for a goalless draw
00:38:19at Stamford Bridge in August.
00:38:23So, Chelsea looking to build on their Champions League win in the week
00:38:28and the 2-0 victory against Brentford in the Premier League last weekend.
00:38:32And all that against the Crystal Palace team,
00:38:35who just need a win.
00:38:37They've gone ten games without one anywhere.
00:38:40And his shield, caught.
00:38:42Sar won it.
00:38:43Mateta takes it on.
00:38:45And Mateta plays it straight against the boot of Sanchez.
00:38:48This big opportunity really ought to have been taken.
00:38:52You don't get gifts like that against Chelsea too often.
00:38:56Sar did his bit.
00:38:57Mateta then never seemed quite in top gear.
00:39:02It's all a bit sluggish.
00:39:03He doesn't really catch the shot at all.
00:39:08No Cole Palmer today for Chelsea.
00:39:10Not even on the bench.
00:39:14Well, the Glasner still fully engaged.
00:39:16Of course he is.
00:39:17Look at those angry words.
00:39:19Following the defeat at Sundern last weekend.
00:39:24Wharton caught late by Caicedo.
00:39:27Yellow cart coming out for the first time.
00:39:32Caicedo gets that pretty badly wrong.
00:39:36A lot going on for Steve Parish.
00:39:38He's got to be looking for a new manager for Crystal Palace.
00:39:42To start at the end of the season or before.
00:39:46He's also sitting in the 101-year-old main stand
00:39:49that will soon be transformed.
00:39:54Caicedo is maybe fortunate now to avoid a second yellow.
00:39:59It's just a foul on Sar.
00:40:01And I think it was.
00:40:03Leto was quite fortunate too.
00:40:09Johnson.
00:40:13Chalabar out.
00:40:21Oh, that's risky.
00:40:22Estevão is in front of Mitchell.
00:40:24And Estevão has a free run here.
00:40:26If he can keep in front of Mitchell.
00:40:28He does!
00:40:29What a wonderful finish!
00:40:36Palace present the first goal to Chelsea.
00:40:39Well, if not on a plate.
00:40:41Certainly close to being that.
00:40:43J.D. Cambo's error.
00:40:44But Estevão still had quite some ground to cover.
00:40:50Estevão scores what is only his second goal in the Premier League.
00:40:53It's his sixth for Chelsea all told.
00:40:56And it's Palace nil, Chelsea one.
00:41:02Mitchell.
00:41:05Support behind from Richards.
00:41:08Now it will be swung over.
00:41:09But it wasn't done properly.
00:41:11And Fernandes heads out to Estevão.
00:41:13Can he go again?
00:41:14He's got to come in all the way from the touchline.
00:41:16He's got help from João Pedro.
00:41:19Estevão puts the burners on.
00:41:20And he nearly put in another one.
00:41:22Henderson did the right thing in going for the far post.
00:41:25And Henderson did the right thing in just taking his hand away.
00:41:31The usual raucous and lively and buoyant Sellers Park atmosphere is somewhat dim this afternoon.
00:41:39Might be the weather.
00:41:40Might be the time of year.
00:41:41Might just be a simple case of look how Palace are doing right now.
00:41:46There's not a lot to be buoyant about.
00:41:49João Pedro now to Estevão.
00:41:52And João Pedro with Henderson having to scamper back to his goal line.
00:41:56And João Pedro is in now.
00:41:58And he scores.
00:41:59Chelsea's second.
00:42:01Slamming the ball past Henderson.
00:42:05Scored against Brentford last weekend.
00:42:08Scores at Palace this.
00:42:09And Chelsea have daylight.
00:42:13And he was onside.
00:42:16All too easy the way that he sold Adam Wharton.
00:42:19And then he hit it as hard as he could.
00:42:21Kept it low.
00:42:22Through Henderson.
00:42:23Crystal Palace, 0-0 Chelsea, 2-0.
00:42:27Crystal Palace, 0-0 Chelsea, 2-0.
00:42:28Crystal Palace, 0-0 Chelsea, 2-0.
00:42:30Calcedo to João Pedro.
00:42:35Neto.
00:42:38Estevão.
00:42:39James on the advance.
00:42:42Fernandes will find him.
00:42:45Estvão.
00:42:46Estvão.
00:42:46Estvão.
00:42:47Has a go.
00:42:47And Henderson needed to save it.
00:42:49Kukureya.
00:42:50And he needed to catch that.
00:42:52But it was easy enough.
00:42:53Good try from the bouncing and bubbly Estvão.
00:42:59Neto.
00:43:02Estvão.
00:43:02Caicedo to Fernandes.
00:43:05James.
00:43:08Estevão.
00:43:09Estvão.
00:43:09Estvão is coming from the left.
00:43:11And wanders towards Estevão as James clips it into the box.
00:43:14Henderson struggling.
00:43:16The shot is blocked.
00:43:17João Pedro says it was with the hands by Canvo.
00:43:22An instant ask for a penalty from João Pedro.
00:43:28Definitely caught the arm or hit the arm of Canvo.
00:43:33And Darren England has been invited or instructed,
00:43:37however you like it, to stop the game and go and have a look for himself.
00:43:42Video assistant referee Matt Donoghue is saying the ball strikes the arm.
00:43:46It's accidental but the ball is going into the goal.
00:43:49I don't think Darren England wants to give this.
00:43:52VAR are digging in.
00:43:54After review.
00:43:56The ball hits.
00:43:58Crystal Palace 23.
00:44:00It is an accidental handball.
00:44:02Not a deliberate.
00:44:03It's an accidental handball.
00:44:05Therefore it is a penalty kick.
00:44:07However, because it's accidental.
00:44:08It is only a yellow card.
00:44:10Only a yellow card.
00:44:12I don't think the only a yellow card is going to appease Palace fans.
00:44:16When he said accidental, there was cheering from home supporters.
00:44:21One for debate.
00:44:27Ends up Fernandes.
00:44:293-0 Chelsea.
00:44:32Rolled in with such a surety.
00:44:37Henderson didn't have time to guess.
00:44:40The goalkeeper left flat footed.
00:44:42And Chelsea are on their way to taking three points home from the Palace.
00:44:49They are being sucked into a relegation fight.
00:44:52There is all that uncertainty.
00:44:53The manager is going to leave at the end of the season.
00:44:55Do they cut ties now?
00:44:57Do they try and get somebody else in?
00:44:59There is a lot for Palace to think about.
00:45:03Something for Wharton to think about now because he is on a yellow card.
00:45:08Caught Caicedo late.
00:45:14Sanchez.
00:45:17Fernandes gives it away.
00:45:18That's a rarity.
00:45:19Pino waters through a couple of challenges.
00:45:22It won't reach Wharton there though.
00:45:23Wharton couldn't help himself and he is going to get the same yellow card.
00:45:27Palace's afternoon is in ruins now.
00:45:31The season is falling apart.
00:45:36Adam Wharton dismissed.
00:45:393-0 down.
00:45:40A player down.
00:45:43Two yellows in the space of five minutes for their England hopeful midfielder.
00:45:50When you think it can't get any worse, it does.
00:45:55Sosa.
00:46:00Richards will give chase.
00:46:03Palace have the throw in.
00:46:06They only have four minutes plus a little bit extra to get a consolation goal.
00:46:11That will surely be all it is if it comes.
00:46:15Hipped on by Lacroix.
00:46:18Lacroix brings it down.
00:46:19Turns and fires but straight at Sanchez.
00:46:22It needed stopping though.
00:46:24There's still a bit of fight left in the Eagles.
00:46:26Just a bit.
00:46:28Will Hughes then on corner duty.
00:46:31Lerma's attacking it.
00:46:33Off the line.
00:46:35Now it's in.
00:46:37Palace have one back.
00:46:40Initially kept out by Sanchez from Lerma's great leap.
00:46:44And Richards reacts just in front of the goal line.
00:46:48His 100th appearance for Palace.
00:46:50He gets a goal to mark it.
00:46:53But that's all Palace will get.
00:46:55Crystal Palace won.
00:46:57Chelsea through it.
00:46:59You know when you're losing 3-1 and you haven't won for 11 games.
00:47:03It looks like right now.
00:47:06It's just fact and the truth.
00:47:09And what we have to accept is right now, let's say we are not good enough to win the game.
00:47:14I felt in terms of the game plan, the organisation, what the players gave for the last two days I
00:47:19thought was outstanding.
00:47:21Frustrating not to have a clean sheet in the last ten minutes and we'll work on that.
00:47:25But a lot of really, really pleasing signs.
00:47:27It's been a really strong start by the new head coach.
00:47:30What's changed for the players?
00:47:31He's a different guy.
00:47:33He wants us to play more intensity.
00:47:36And I think that's why we start to win more games.
00:47:41Because in the Premier League, if you play with intensity the whole game, I think it will be difficult for
00:47:45the other team to breathe.
00:47:48And if we recover the ball on the top of the pitch, you'll have more chance to score.
00:47:52Everybody knows your situation, that you'll be leaving at the end of the season.
00:47:55Do you think that's having any impact at all or is it a lot more complicated than that?
00:47:59No, I don't think so because nobody knew and we started to lose.
00:48:03I think, again, there are more reasons without looking for excuses.
00:48:08I think there are many puzzle pieces that led to this.
00:48:11And now it's for us to get these puzzle pieces and to find them again and create a nice picture
00:48:19and that's what we will do.
00:48:22We will come on to that very shortly.
00:48:24But first, I want to ask you about Esteval because you know what it's like to be 18 years old
00:48:28and make that big move.
00:48:30How impressed are you with the way that he's handling it all?
00:48:32I've been really impressed.
00:48:33I think he is a real superstar in the making and his performance today I thought was outstanding.
00:48:39And what he'd done, he caused Crystal Palace problems all game.
00:48:42And we see here he stays out wide and for someone so young to have that patience to hold your
00:48:47wit and, you know,
00:48:49sometimes you're not in the game at times when you hold that wit but he held and he caused Palace
00:48:53problems, big problems.
00:48:54You see here he comes in off the line now and then it's a nice little pass and that was
00:48:58the start of things to come for him during this game.
00:49:02And then here, I really like this anticipation.
00:49:04You see Mitchell here.
00:49:05He now, so Esteval knows the ball's going to go back.
00:49:09He anticipates it going back.
00:49:10Palace line is so high, it's incredible.
00:49:13But then Esteval now, he shows the speed.
00:49:15Mitchell's not slow.
00:49:16Real good composure in front of goal and a great finish to put Chelsea 1-0 up.
00:49:21And again here, similar to the last clip, his anticipation again.
00:49:24Palace didn't learn from the first one.
00:49:26Chelsea cleared the ball and now he's clean to one goal again.
00:49:30Being direct shows how quick he is once again.
00:49:33And he makes the right decision but it doesn't come off.
00:49:37And now here, showing that he can create as well.
00:49:40Coming off the line, plays a lovely ball through to Jao Pedro, got him clean to one goal.
00:49:44A lovely chop from Jao Pedro and then a great finish.
00:49:49He's got great belief in himself, hasn't he, as well?
00:49:51Yeah, he's got great belief.
00:49:53And again here, now you can see him.
00:49:55He's telling his teammates where he wants the ball to go.
00:49:58Now he comes into a lovely position again, just inside the penalty box.
00:50:01Gets a shot off and a good save.
00:50:03But I thought he was outstanding today.
00:50:05Everything went through him today.
00:50:06And then there's a lucky Chelsea fan here about to get his young man's shirt.
00:50:10I saw him live against Arsenal in the semi-final League Cup
00:50:13and he'd come up against Timber who was playing on the left.
00:50:15And I've not seen anyone give Timber that many problems.
00:50:19So direct, so strong, goes both ways.
00:50:22I agree, I think he's a superstar in the making.
00:50:24There was a couple of moments of controversy, but one in particular in this game
00:50:29which involved a penalty decision for handball.
00:50:34So we thought we'd explain what we're looking for before we see what we're about to see.
00:50:38Go on.
00:50:39But it's slightly more complicated than it needs to be.
00:50:41So this is the one that would apply in this situation.
00:50:44It's a player touching the ball with a hand or arm when it's made their body unnaturally bigger.
00:50:48So that's what we're looking for is the position of their arm.
00:50:51So it's not a consequence of or justifiable by a player's body movement for that specific situation.
00:50:56So we're looking to see here if Canvo does make himself unnaturally bigger by the movement of his arm.
00:51:04Now, Darren England initially thinks not.
00:51:07And then the VAR takes a look at it and says, we think you should go look at the screen
00:51:10for this.
00:51:11And then, as Guy said, there was some encouragement that Darren England should change his decision.
00:51:17What do you think? Is this making himself unnaturally bigger?
00:51:21It's not that difficult. He's not in an unnatural position. You can see that. It's right by the side of
00:51:27him.
00:51:28And when the law is broken down as well as you've just done it there, it's an easy decision.
00:51:33I don't really know why VAR is getting involved because they've ended up making the wrong decision.
00:51:38Whether they're confused, whether they've misinterpreted the law, we don't know.
00:51:41We'll have to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they've made a mistake.
00:51:43Yeah, and they've made many mistakes. They've made many mistakes this season.
00:51:46I think that's why everyone's getting fed up with it because, you know, it's there to get the decisions right.
00:51:52And we're seeing it time and time again where they're making the wrong decisions.
00:51:54So, for me, get rid of it.
00:51:56The other thing that Darren England did was explain why it was a yellow card and not a red card.
00:52:01Having awarded the handball and the penalty, it was because it was, while it was a handball offence in his
00:52:07eyes,
00:52:08it wasn't deliberate handball, it was accidental handball.
00:52:11Just to make sure that we've underlined that.
00:52:13But you didn't think it was handball in the first instance?
00:52:16Not in the first, no.
00:52:16So then none of that would be, yeah, not a handball offence rather in the first instance.
00:52:20So then that wouldn't be relevant.
00:52:22We need to ask about Oliver Glasner because the obvious thing to say is that Christopalis is struggling
00:52:28because Oliver Glasner has announced publicly that he's leaving and there is unrest at the club.
00:52:34He said it's more complicated than that, that there are more pieces to the puzzle.
00:52:37But does there come a point where Christopalis have to bite the bullet and sack their manager in order to
00:52:43restore calmness?
00:52:46Yeah, I think it's been a tough couple of weeks, I think, for Christopalis, obviously losing the captain as well.
00:52:51And then the manager saying he wants to leave, then Mateta saying he's leaving, then Mateta saying he wants to
00:52:57leave.
00:52:58And then what starts to happen is you see things like Adam Morton getting sent off and players getting frustrated
00:53:02because there's no continuity amongst the team.
00:53:05So Glasner said he's going to stay till the end of the season and I think the board are calling
00:53:12us bluff.
00:53:13I think his body language isn't good and the way he's talking doesn't fill me with, you know, any positivity.
00:53:21And I think the players feed off that, start feeling sorry for themselves a bit and a little bit despondent.
00:53:25I'd be amazed if he lasts a season.
00:53:29Right, plenty more sport for you across the BBC this week.
00:53:33Mark Chapman and guests will have the last word on the weekend on the Monday nightclub from 7 tomorrow on
00:53:385 Live, BBC Sounds, iPlayer and YouTube.
00:53:42It's the final round of group games in the Champions League in midweek.
00:53:46Commentaries across 5 Live and BBC Sounds and then highlights are from 10.40 on Wednesday here on BBC One.
00:53:53If you'd like even more Wayne, then The Wayne Rooney Show is available right now on iPlayer.
00:53:57There's a new episode from 6 a.m. tomorrow.
00:54:00Wayne will be up on time to listen to that and catch up with everything from these past two days.
00:54:04Match of the day and individual highlights of every Premier League game are available right now on iPlayer.
00:54:11We're off to West London now, which is where Brentford's heart has been this season.
00:54:15Only the top three in the table have taken more points at their home grounds.
00:54:19Nottingham Forest with the visitors today, watched by Mark Scott.
00:54:23Brentford's opening day defeat at the city ground feels a long, long time ago.
00:54:28Back then, Forest were full of cheer under Nuno.
00:54:31While Keith Andrews' first season as a head coach was widely predicted to be a struggle,
00:54:36both clubs have certainly gone on to confound expectations.
00:54:40Given Brentford were a bit hard done by to lose at Chelsea,
00:54:44it's no surprise to see Andrews go with the same side today.
00:54:47And having made changes for the Europa League loss at Braga,
00:54:51Sean Dyche goes back to the team which started the draw with Arsenal.
00:54:58Here's Collins.
00:55:04Shada, brushing off Ola Aina, there's no foul there.
00:55:08Shada, good ball, should be 1-0.
00:55:12And given the form that Igor Thiago has been in, it really should be.
00:55:16Brentford in front early on.
00:55:18Excellent stuff from Shada.
00:55:19Aina's just not strong enough there.
00:55:21And Igor Thiago will know that he has been gobbling up chances like that all season.
00:55:31Lurillo.
00:55:35Pretty shoddy.
00:55:42Sankare taking too long.
00:55:45Damsgarth could be in.
00:55:47Selsa's enough for now.
00:55:55Aina.
00:55:56Hudson-Odoi.
00:56:01Ola Aina.
00:56:09Trying to counter a corner out of it.
00:56:11It's Igor Jesus, it's 1-0.
00:56:15Igor Jesus for Nottingham Forest.
00:56:19Only his second Premier League goal.
00:56:22And how Nottingham Forest needed it.
00:56:25Aina looked like he'd missed the opportunity to get the ball in here.
00:56:29But get the ball in he did.
00:56:30And then have a look at this.
00:56:33Strength.
00:56:34Technique.
00:56:34And power on the finish.
00:56:36And it's Brentford 0.
00:56:38Nottingham Forest 1.
00:56:43The mood has completely altered since Shades versus his opener.
00:56:49Sankare.
00:56:53Still Sankare!
00:56:56Big chance to double the lead.
00:56:59And doesn't he know it?
00:57:00Sits the goal.
00:57:01It has been all Forest.
00:57:03And it could easily be 2-0.
00:57:09Jensen.
00:57:12Jarmuluk.
00:57:15Out of play by Anderson.
00:57:19Jarmuluk.
00:57:20Brentford look a bit lost at the moment as to how to approach things.
00:57:27Sels has come.
00:57:28Dealt with it to an extent.
00:57:30And then it's blasted back in.
00:57:32And still bouncing around.
00:57:35Free kick has been awarded Forest Sway for a high boot.
00:57:40Long throw caused pandemonium in the penalty area here.
00:57:43Sels fell as he went to get to it.
00:57:46But then Gibbs-White was caught by the flailing boots of Damscott.
00:57:55Malenkovich.
00:57:57Malenkovich.
00:57:57Jose Suess nearly rolled Collins.
00:58:01Shader.
00:58:05That's good.
00:58:06Jensen.
00:58:09Threading through nicely here.
00:58:11Watara!
00:58:12Big save from Sels.
00:58:17Janelt.
00:58:22But this is a golden chance to draw Brentford level.
00:58:25Although credit to Sels for making himself big.
00:58:30In front.
00:58:31And good value for it so far.
00:58:32His side.
00:58:37Jarmuluk.
00:58:38All dangerous themselves.
00:58:41Had to pat it over the top.
00:58:44Got a meaty touch off Anderson here.
00:58:46Which made it really tricky.
00:58:53Rico Henry.
00:58:54Off Aina.
00:58:56Not sure they'll have time to take this throw.
00:58:59Need to be quick if they are.
00:59:05Coyote's throw.
00:59:06All the headers wide.
00:59:09Brentford nearly level with the last action of the half.
00:59:12Set Van den Berg on the end of the long hurl.
00:59:15Into the area from Coyote.
00:59:16Coyote.
00:59:21That's an intelligent header for Jensen to chase.
00:59:24Shrugging off Aina.
00:59:25Shader.
00:59:27Good defending.
00:59:30And he gets the congratulations from his keeper and fellow centre-half.
00:59:36Just used his body to get between Shader and the ball.
00:59:42Not a great deal to talk about in the second half so far.
00:59:49Watara.
00:59:51It's broken for Jarmuluk.
00:59:53Anderson stepping in.
00:59:55And tripping.
00:59:56The Jarmuluk.
01:00:01Into the last quarter of an hour.
01:00:03Brentford have scored 13 goals from this part onwards in the league this season.
01:00:08More than anyone else.
01:00:09And nobody's led in more than Forest have in the final 15.
01:00:14Sal stays.
01:00:16He's come all the way through.
01:00:18And it should be one each.
01:00:20And it's Igor Thiago again.
01:00:24Well, their informed Brazilian has had an off-colour day.
01:00:31Forest just grinding their way to a precious victory.
01:00:38Shader.
01:00:41Up against Aina.
01:00:43Inside of him.
01:00:44But not away from Milenkovic.
01:00:45Who's managed to get it forwards to Gibbs White.
01:00:47Early one forwards for Tywa Awonyi.
01:00:50The only Forest player in the Brentford half.
01:00:53And he's done brilliantly.
01:00:54Tywa Awonyi.
01:00:55Angle against him.
01:00:56Still Awonyi.
01:00:57Wonderful goal.
01:00:58And Forest have won it.
01:01:00Tywa Awonyi with a superb individual strike.
01:01:07Gibbs White bent it forwards.
01:01:09Look at Awonyi here.
01:01:10The only Forest player in Brentford territory.
01:01:13Up against Vandenberg.
01:01:14Absolutely did him.
01:01:16But Enstil had plenty of work left to do.
01:01:21That is a supreme piece of finishing.
01:01:26And this is a very good win for Nottingham Forest.
01:01:31I think the resilience and the mentality were key.
01:01:34Along with some good play, of course.
01:01:35You know, different kinds of goals.
01:01:36A very good one from Igor.
01:01:37Buzzing for him.
01:01:38He worked very hard.
01:01:39Takes it superbly.
01:01:40And then Tee coming on.
01:01:42He's been terrific inside the camp.
01:01:44And he's broke through and stayed calm.
01:01:46And slotted it forward.
01:01:46So very pleased for them too.
01:01:48And the team, of course, as well.
01:01:49It was a good team effort.
01:01:51Defending low blocks.
01:01:52And a very good ball for Morgan.
01:01:54And when I get the ball, I just know.
01:01:56One-on-one against the defender.
01:01:57My focus is just to go forward.
01:01:59And at the end, I pass the ball into the net.
01:02:01Started the game pretty well.
01:02:03There was transitions for both teams.
01:02:06Conceded a goal we shouldn't have if we're being really honest and self-critical.
01:02:10We weren't clinical enough and taking our opportunities.
01:02:13I felt we got into good areas.
01:02:14The reality is they've had two shots on target.
01:02:16And they've come away with three points.
01:02:18How much did you enjoy the performance from your two centre-halves?
01:02:20Because there was some proper, shall we say, old-school defending in there.
01:02:23Nothing wrong with old-school defending.
01:02:25Trust me, I'd speak to all the managers.
01:02:26They love old-school defenders because they're getting harder to find.
01:02:30Well, you'd never know that Sean Dyche loves an old-school defender.
01:02:34But after a couple of difficult games in cup competitions,
01:02:37Nottingham Forest League form has actually been really good.
01:02:40And they look much more like themselves.
01:02:42Absolutely, yeah.
01:02:43He had his first choice back four, if you like.
01:02:46And well-organised, disciplined, concentrated.
01:02:51Very much a Forest performance of last season in many ways, if you like.
01:02:55And Sean Dyche, you know he drills them well.
01:02:57They've got that back four.
01:02:58They work on it a lot.
01:02:59They're all good players.
01:03:02And with those two protecting them in front as well.
01:03:05It's a difficult unit to break down.
01:03:07Arsenal couldn't do it.
01:03:08Brentford huffed and puffed a little bit today.
01:03:10But you can see the distances are good.
01:03:12They've got a good understanding of two centre-halves.
01:03:14Played together for a while now.
01:03:17And the full-backs are both quick.
01:03:19Recovery runs.
01:03:19Williams I really like.
01:03:20He's comfortable on the left.
01:03:22Especially considering he played a lot of his early career on the right.
01:03:28Brentford actually only had, there's the two in front.
01:03:30Sangara and Anderson, who worked tirelessly.
01:03:33We know that.
01:03:33Two wide men as well, tucking in to do the work.
01:03:36And if you look at the bodies and the amount of numbers around the board.
01:03:39Very difficult for Brentford.
01:03:41Who, by the way, have been exceptional at home and cause teams.
01:03:43Lots of problems.
01:03:44Got some terrific front players.
01:03:46They only had today one shot on target.
01:03:49And when that did happen, Watara came on off the bench.
01:03:52This was his first chance, actually.
01:03:54Sells makes a terrific save.
01:03:55And that was the real opportunity for Brentford.
01:03:58But other than that, they nullified them, Forrest.
01:04:00And managed the game really well after they got the lead.
01:04:04With West Ham winning, it was a massive performance from them.
01:04:07And a massive result.
01:04:08Malenkovic again there using his pace.
01:04:11And I like this one as well.
01:04:13Because Murillo, who...
01:04:14He's a powerful lad and he reads the danger well.
01:04:16Look at the strength here.
01:04:18You see the fans applauding in the corner.
01:04:20Yeah, really impressive performance.
01:04:22And give them that breathing space again with the pressure that West Ham had put on.
01:04:26Yeah, not a great performance from Brentford.
01:04:28Who have been good at times this season.
01:04:30We know that they have that really strong home record as well.
01:04:33Yeah, so that makes it even more of a brilliant result for Forrest.
01:04:38And Brentford have been brilliant this season.
01:04:40I actually tipped them for relegation to do so.
01:04:43How wrong was I?
01:04:44So this is your official apology?
01:04:46Yeah.
01:04:46I've already apologised for you.
01:04:47Yeah, twice.
01:04:48Oh, so this is backtracking now.
01:04:49Yeah, so no.
01:04:50They've been great all season.
01:04:51But I think they'll be disappointed with this result today.
01:04:53Because I think, although Forrest were good, Brentford could have been a lot better today.
01:04:57Yeah, but as you say, really important win for Nottingham Forrest.
01:05:00It is time now to catch up with all of Saturday's goals.
01:05:08There's he.
01:05:10Pressure on Van Dijk.
01:05:11Here's a chance.
01:05:11Kevin Ilse for the third home match in a row.
01:05:16It's a decent looking ball.
01:05:18And a chance.
01:05:18And a second goal by Alex Jimenez.
01:05:25Virgil van Dijk.
01:05:26Never pulled out right back in the game.
01:05:28It's time to Dominic.
01:05:30Subozla.
01:05:30And it's brilliantly taken.
01:05:35And he'll stroke.
01:05:37Little fixed header on.
01:05:38It's a real fumble.
01:05:39It's on the lane.
01:05:40It's over the lane.
01:05:41Forrest have won the game.
01:05:45Bowen getting half a yard to deliver the quads.
01:05:48And it's thundered in by Somerville.
01:05:51It's Gerard Bowen.
01:05:53And he's tucked that nicely into the corner.
01:05:56Castellanos.
01:05:57Blocked by Ballard.
01:06:00Oh, what a fantastic goal from Mateus Fernandes.
01:06:06Good ball.
01:06:08And Sunderland do have a way back in.
01:06:10Robbie's headed home.
01:06:14In from Spence.
01:06:16Off the head of a step.
01:06:18Back from Romero.
01:06:20Van der Ven.
01:06:21To give Spurs the lead.
01:06:24Kyle Walker.
01:06:25It's brilliant.
01:06:26And it's 1-1.
01:06:28Axel Twanzebys.
01:06:30Very first Premier League goal.
01:06:34Oh, he's done Van der Ven.
01:06:36Foster.
01:06:37And second time.
01:06:40Lyle Foster for Burnley.
01:06:44I would have had his delivery.
01:06:45Oh, what a finish.
01:06:47Christian Romero.
01:06:51Yasin Ayari.
01:06:52Might take on the shot.
01:06:53He did.
01:06:54Oh, I say.
01:06:56Yasin Ayari.
01:06:57Belts Brighton in front.
01:07:02Tester for Boskalian.
01:07:03He's missed it.
01:07:04And here is Chukwesi.
01:07:07He scores.
01:07:09It's Wilson.
01:07:10Well hit.
01:07:11Oh, brilliant.
01:07:13The Welsh wizard.
01:07:14Then it's Harry Wilson.
01:07:17Continues to do this.
01:07:18Taking on Hugo Guaido.
01:07:19Brilliant delivery.
01:07:20And what about that for a finish.
01:07:22By Omar Mamosh.
01:07:26Now Semenyo.
01:07:28Great touch.
01:07:28It was perfect.
01:07:30And that's all about the first touch.
01:07:36Right, let's take a look at how the Premier League table looks with 15 games still to go.
01:07:42Arsenal's third match without a win means that their lead is four points.
01:07:47Aston Villa getting back to winning ways means that they are back in the title race.
01:07:51Manchester United's resurgence under Michael Carrick means that they are into the top four now.
01:07:56Chelsea are also now above Liverpool who drop out of potential Champions League places.
01:08:03Nottingham Forest win at Brentford means that their five point buffer has been restored above the relegation places.
01:08:10And then that eighth successive game without a win for Crystal Palace means that Oliver Glasner's side are looking quite
01:08:16nervously now over their shoulders.
01:08:20Thank you very much to Wayne and to Danny for your company this evening as the title race takes a
01:08:26twist.
01:08:26And Manchester United are finding that sometimes it's better the Red Devil you know.
01:08:31Bye-bye.
01:08:33.
