00:00:00The FA Challenge Cup, everyone wants the win.
00:00:02Crazy gang of feet in the Culture Club.
00:00:06Gerrard!
00:00:07Oh yes!
00:00:09Oh yes!
00:00:11What a goal!
00:00:13Back of the score!
00:00:15Steve's in trouble!
00:00:16Give it up!
00:00:17Give it up!
00:00:18This is the moment of joy that all professional footballers hope for.
00:00:22And Mo Manitrae for the first time, Crystal Palace are winners!
00:00:31The biggest day in the all-new Macclesfield FC's short history.
00:00:39Duffy puts it in.
00:00:41That doesn't look a bad ball.
00:00:42It's a great ball!
00:00:43It's a wonderful goal!
00:00:46Captain Dawson hits the Siltman in front.
00:00:50That was perfect for the non-league team.
00:00:55Palace just can't get it away.
00:00:57Buckley Ricketts touched it.
00:00:58But but he does!
00:01:00And it's two for Macclesfield!
00:01:03Now we're really in the realms of FA Cup fantasy.
00:01:10Macclesfield and National League North have knocked at the FA Cup holders.
00:01:16It's getting emotional to see me younger.
00:01:19But I achieved this.
00:01:21So proud of me.
00:01:22It is the biggest shock that the world's greatest cup competition has ever seen.
00:01:30Hello and welcome to highlights of Sunday's FA Cup third round ties.
00:01:35After arguably the greatest FA Cup shock of all time yesterday, how on earth do we follow that?
00:01:40Congratulations once again to everyone at Macclesfield FC and their manager John Rooney will actually be joining us in the
00:01:47studio later on.
00:01:48Now we've got eight ties to bring you before that.
00:01:50Who knows?
00:01:50Maybe this third round might still deliver us one more shock.
00:01:54And with me in the studio tonight are two veterans of FA Cup campaigns.
00:01:57Good and a few not so good.
00:01:59But both wear the scars of plenty of third round battles.
00:02:03Welcome to Deion Dublin and Phil Jones.
00:02:06Well Manchester United against Brighton stirs memories of the 1983 final between the two.
00:02:11When Seagull striker Gordon Smith was famously denied his moment of glory.
00:02:162004 Cup winner Darren Fletcher took interim charge of United for the very first time at Old Trafford.
00:02:21With Steve Bauer watching from the commentary box.
00:02:25Darren Fletcher says he's the proudest man in the world to have the honour to walk out and lead Manchester
00:02:31United here at Old Trafford for the first time.
00:02:34And the FA Cup holds a special part in his heart as well.
00:02:38It was the first of nine medals with the club.
00:02:41He makes three changes today as Mount, Yoro and Maynu all start.
00:02:46Maynu starting for just the second time all season.
00:02:49Casemiro and Heaven are on the bench.
00:02:51There's no Luke Shaw who's being rested.
00:02:54Fabian Herzler from his freshness and has made six Brighton changes.
00:02:58Including Danny Welbeck.
00:03:00He's the captain against his former club.
00:03:02Against whom he's scored seven times in 18 matches.
00:03:06Feltman, Coppola and Poscagli all come in to the back four.
00:03:15Cunha.
00:03:17Dallow have made an early run.
00:03:19Had he timed the run?
00:03:20Well, there's no flag at the moment.
00:03:22Dallow!
00:03:23Steele came out quickly and he was on sight.
00:03:27But two minutes in.
00:03:29Manchester United right back timed his run to perfection.
00:03:33Beautifully found by Cunha.
00:03:35The 35-year-old Jason Steele went to ground and made a crucial save.
00:03:42He's the 11th different man in the dugout to take charge of a Manchester United team since Alex Ferguson's retirement
00:03:4912 and a half years ago.
00:03:51And that will be another person again for the Manchester derby here in six days' time.
00:03:59Manchester United free kick.
00:04:05And it's another excellent save from Jason Steele.
00:04:12Who single-handedly has kept Brighton's clean sheet intact in the early stages.
00:04:18Steele at the full stretch.
00:04:22Hinslewood.
00:04:24Put it back from Gomez.
00:04:28Cariagli.
00:04:29The numbers forward here, Brighton.
00:04:33Wellbeck.
00:04:34Oh, he's done really well.
00:04:36Danny Wellbeck off the line and the follow-up's in from Gruda.
00:04:40The German has his third goal of the season.
00:04:43And Brighton, less than 12 minutes in, have the lead at Old Trafford.
00:04:48And after those two excellent opportunities at one end that weren't taken for United, Brighton accept theirs.
00:04:55And Danny Wellbeck was right at the heart of this lovely cross.
00:05:00Martinez cleared it off the line.
00:05:03But only as far as Gruda.
00:05:05Who swept it home to give Brighton the lead.
00:05:12He was the first phone call that Darren Fletcher made before accepting the role for two games.
00:05:24Oh, Lamont has given it away to Wellbeck!
00:05:28And somehow Manchester United survived.
00:05:31Rutter was offside anyway.
00:05:34Senna Lamont is the most relieved man inside Old Trafford.
00:05:42He will be the happier at the moment.
00:05:50Fernandes.
00:05:51For Kunja Torrante.
00:05:53Chesko is bursting into the penalty area.
00:05:56Kunja around Beltman!
00:05:59He went for the near post option.
00:06:02He'd have Steele scrambling.
00:06:05But it wasn't on target for Manchester United.
00:06:10Manchester United lost in the third round of the FA Cup in just two.
00:06:15Of their last 40 ties.
00:06:20God for that.
00:06:25Beltman into Gruda.
00:06:27Who's onside.
00:06:28And he's found Wellbeck!
00:06:30And it's 2-0 Brighton!
00:06:33And the former Manchester United man has come back to haunt them yet again.
00:06:41Eight goals in 19 games against the club where he won the Premier League title.
00:06:47And he has silenced Old Trafford.
00:06:49And he's doubled Brighton's lead.
00:06:52One touch out of his feet.
00:06:54And look at the second.
00:06:56It flew into the top corner.
00:06:58No chance for Lamont.
00:07:01He's got his team.
00:07:03To find it enough, he'll struggle from this kind of situation.
00:07:07No way through for Fernandes.
00:07:1118-year-old Shea Lacy.
00:07:14To get the cross into Chesko!
00:07:17He'll be disappointed.
00:07:19But he was much more positive.
00:07:25Fernandes looking for Casemiro.
00:07:26He's beaten to it by Coppola.
00:07:30And United get a corner.
00:07:34Maguire may be an added threat.
00:07:36If this can find him.
00:07:38It's towards him.
00:07:39And it is in!
00:07:42Well, there's one back.
00:07:44Six minutes of the 90 to go.
00:07:48Suddenly there's belief.
00:07:50Maguire and Shea's go jumping.
00:07:53And the Slovenian, just in front of Maguire,
00:07:57to squeeze it in past Jason Steele.
00:08:03He's seen this script as a player many times.
00:08:06Will he see it as interim head coach?
00:08:10Lacy.
00:08:14He's going to get a yellow card.
00:08:15Just a little over-exuberant there.
00:08:17The 18-year-old.
00:08:19Just over-ran it.
00:08:21And then caught Ayari.
00:08:24This side have actually won only one of their last eight games.
00:08:28Three defeats in that time.
00:08:29The only team they've beaten in that period were Burnley at home.
00:08:31Gruden.
00:08:38Cunha.
00:08:40Casemiro.
00:08:42He's going to look for Lacy.
00:08:50And that's gone Brighton's way.
00:08:53Oh, and Shea Lacy has thrown the ball away on a yellow card.
00:08:59And Simon Hooper is going to apply the letter of the law.
00:09:04And send the 18-year-old off on his Old Trafford debut.
00:09:09And that is a tough life lesson for the teenager.
00:09:18On a yellow card.
00:09:20And he throws the ball away.
00:09:24And he is devastated.
00:09:32Hinchelwood trying to see out the final few seconds now for a memorable cup win for Brighton.
00:09:40No Fletcher fairy tale.
00:09:42Well, Manchester United exit the FA Cup at the third round stage for just the third time in 41 ties.
00:09:50And it is Brighton who go through with their fourth win in their last five visits to Old Trafford.
00:09:59Manchester United 1-1, Brighton 2.
00:10:03I know you left here 11 years ago.
00:10:05But when you play them, you always seem to score.
00:10:07Yeah, I'm happy to score.
00:10:08I want to score every single game that I play.
00:10:11Hopefully today I've got another goal.
00:10:14And it sees us through to the next round.
00:10:16And that's my job.
00:10:17In terms of going behind, can you see the confidence levels drop?
00:10:20Are they a little bit fragile at the moment?
00:10:22Well, they are.
00:10:23But they've got to get away from it.
00:10:24You know, you can see that once they conceded the goal,
00:10:26it was difficult for them to respond.
00:10:28And it took them a while to get themselves back onto their feet.
00:10:30But that only changes with winning football matches and going on a run.
00:10:33And for me, you've got to dig deep to win football matches.
00:10:36To make six changes and play like that, what does it say about the ability of all your squad?
00:10:40Create togetherness.
00:10:41I think that's the main bit.
00:10:43It's not that I make changes to just change.
00:10:45For me, it's like the players, they deserve to play who won the pitch today.
00:10:50And therefore, it's great team performance.
00:10:52It's great togetherness.
00:10:53We can really rely on each other.
00:10:55How big a challenge is it now for whoever is going to lead this club between now and the end
00:10:59of the season?
00:11:00Managing leading Manchester United is one of the biggest challenges out there.
00:11:04I still think finishing top four or five, which are Champions League places, has got to be the objective.
00:11:09Definitely got the talent to do it.
00:11:10For me, the players have got to take responsibility for that as well.
00:11:12It's not on the manager.
00:11:13It's not on the club.
00:11:14It's on everyone together.
00:11:16They have to step up to the plate now.
00:11:17Find a way to win football matches and go on a run and build some confidence.
00:11:21We'll come on to just where this leaves Manchester United and their season in a moment.
00:11:25But Dion, a first ever FA Cup win for Brighton against Manchester United.
00:11:28Six changes today as well.
00:11:30We have to heap praise on them, don't we?
00:11:32Yeah, we do because a very, very brave side.
00:11:35And they had lots of good outfield players that were playing really good.
00:11:39But they also had their goalkeeper as well, who I think was absolutely outstanding.
00:11:44Made a couple of good saves early on.
00:11:46This one here, I'm actually thinking to myself, this is a goal.
00:11:49But Jason Steele gets out big, does that spider thing that Schmeichel started.
00:11:54And then he pulls out, you know, saves like that as well.
00:11:57And he also, you know, he started to play as well.
00:12:01Very calm keeper.
00:12:03Maybe put himself in the shop window as well.
00:12:05And he started off moves like this where Brighton were very comfortable to play through the thirds.
00:12:11And they commit players forward as well.
00:12:13This is a way at Old Trafford.
00:12:15In a very big game in the FA Cup.
00:12:17They've got five against four earlier on.
00:12:21There's your man.
00:12:21He's getting better with age.
00:12:23He's 35 years old.
00:12:24And he was just outstanding today.
00:12:27Yeah, I echo what you just said, Dion.
00:12:28I think he was terrific today.
00:12:30His distribution.
00:12:31See passes like this.
00:12:32Not afraid at Old Trafford, away from home.
00:12:34I think there's three passes here, up, back and through.
00:12:37And a bit of better execution.
00:12:39He ends up one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
00:12:41But I just think some of his 30-yard pings, some of his passes through the lines like here, you
00:12:46see.
00:12:46Not pushed, not rushed, not panicked.
00:12:49Finds a great ball in between the midfield players.
00:12:53Here, Dogu probably gets on the wrong side.
00:12:55He needs to be over on the other side.
00:12:57Force him down the line.
00:12:58Even if he does get there before Dogu, he's still in a position where he can make contact with the
00:13:02ball and make an impact and try and defend it.
00:13:05But as we wind it on, great touch, great ball, great little reverse pass.
00:13:09And maybe Agarte can cover around a little bit quicker.
00:13:13But this touch and finish from Danny Welbeck is absolutely outstanding.
00:13:16Honestly, I've been so impressed with the way he's played at Brighton.
00:13:20I'm going to let the viewers in on a little secret, and Dion will agree with me here.
00:13:23You're rather animated.
00:13:25When Danny Welbeck did score in this game, you kept saying people don't realise just how good he is.
00:13:30You saw it first-hand when you were at Manchester United.
00:13:32Look at these.
00:13:33The stats speak for themselves, but as a player and as a person as well, is he perhaps now getting
00:13:38the recognition that he deserves?
00:13:39Yeah, potentially.
00:13:40I just think he's so...
00:13:41I don't think people realise how good he is.
00:13:43And everything he brings to the team, his attributes, his all-round game, the balance he brings,
00:13:48he's a character, he's a presence, he's seen, he's leading his team now, he's taking on that role.
00:13:53He scores goals, his link-up play is excellent, he's strong, he's aggressive.
00:13:58I just think he's a terrific all-round player.
00:14:00And don't forget, he's had two really serious injuries as well, which he's come back from, which is not easy
00:14:04to do.
00:14:04So to still be playing at 35 years old, at the level he is for Brighton, scoring goals, having an
00:14:09influence like that in a team, terrific.
00:14:11Sorry, Kelly, I think he's found out that just stay in the middle.
00:14:15As you get older, you think, well, my legs can't take me out to the left.
00:14:18I've done the right anymore, which is what he was doing when he was younger.
00:14:21And now he's 35, he knows I'm a centre-forward, just serve me with chances.
00:14:25I will put them away.
00:14:27And like Jones has said there, he will score goals.
00:14:29And he's going to remain in the conversation, isn't he, for whether he should be in that England squad in
00:14:32the summer.
00:14:33With form like that, I'm sure.
00:14:34It was good to see Kobi Mainu starting today.
00:14:37He hasn't had too many starts.
00:14:38He came off on the 62nd minute and it was Shea Lacey was one of the players that came on
00:14:43at that point.
00:14:44Big opportunity for him.
00:14:45I know he's someone that, again, you've watched a lot of, Phil.
00:14:48He did get sent off a second yellow.
00:14:51Darren Fletcher said he thought the first yellow was potentially a little bit harsh.
00:14:55But regardless, this was a harsh learning curve for Shea Lacey today.
00:14:58Yeah, no, look, Shea Lacey is going to be a top, top player.
00:15:02He's got everything.
00:15:04He's almost got the Phil Foden-esque touch and the way he dribbles, the way he commits players.
00:15:08He's aggressive, he's direct.
00:15:10He only needs half a yard to get the ball in.
00:15:13But I was devastated for him when he got sent off.
00:15:16You can see here, even when he came on against Burnley, first thing he does, commits a player, hits the
00:15:20crossbar.
00:15:21Here, only needs half a yard.
00:15:24And he's just all-around game, he's very good.
00:15:26Every time he gets the ball, he looks like he's going to create something.
00:15:29He looks like he's going to make something happen.
00:15:32This one, he's over-run the ball slightly.
00:15:35Yes, it's a foul.
00:15:37Yes, it's probably a yellow card, just.
00:15:39It probably is a yellow card.
00:15:40I don't think he can have any complaints about that one.
00:15:44And then the second one, look, the letter of the law states that it is a second yellow card.
00:15:49I just think, in the manner of the game, Shea Lacey, his first appearance, I know you can't take that
00:15:55into context as a referee.
00:15:56I'd just like to see him maybe bide his time a little bit with that one and maybe give him
00:16:01a warning rather than another yellow card.
00:16:02I thought it was harsh, but the letter of the law states is a second yellow card.
00:16:05He probably would have got, Simon Hooper would have probably got more plaudits from all the footballing world if he'd
00:16:12have pulled him aside and said,
00:16:14listen, I should really send you off, but I'm not going to, this is your lesson.
00:16:18I mean, you can see what it means to him coming off.
00:16:20He looked like he was devastated, didn't he?
00:16:22We've been patiently waiting, haven't we, for news on the managerial situation at Manchester United.
00:16:27And this result will only kind of increase the desperation for there to be a solution.
00:16:31What are you expecting to happen next, Phil?
00:16:33Some stability.
00:16:35It's difficult.
00:16:36It's been difficult for a number of months now.
00:16:39Obviously, Ruben Aberin lost his job.
00:16:41Darren Fletcher's took the team now.
00:16:43I think that, you know, he's somebody who understands the club, understands what it takes to play for Man United.
00:16:49He's been there through the tough times and the good times.
00:16:52But now's the time to get some stability back in the football club.
00:16:55And whether it's Darren, and I still think if it is Darren, he's got more than enough qualities and the
00:16:59people around him to help him with that to the end of the season.
00:17:02But now's the time, some stability, some calmness and try and get some wins and try and get some momentum
00:17:08again.
00:17:09I mean, it's a word that we've used so often.
00:17:11It's always two steps forward, one step back.
00:17:13But whoever comes in, whoever takes charge for the rest of the season, it's got to be, you know, the
00:17:17aim has got to be to finish in those Europa League spaces or the Champions League.
00:17:21And of course, they're out of both of the Cups now as well.
00:17:23OK, well, Sheffield United have won seven of their last ten games as they've pulled away from trouble in the
00:17:28Championship.
00:17:29Today, they hosted mid-table League One side Mansfield Town, managed by the former Blades boss Nigel Clough.
00:17:35Commentary comes from Paul Walker.
00:17:39Over a decade since these two last crossed paths.
00:17:442014 feels distant now, but one figure bridges the gap.
00:17:48Nigel Clough, once in charge here, guiding Sheffield United through a different chapter.
00:17:53Now back in South Yorkshire at the helm of Mansfield.
00:17:56Sheffield United's FA Cup journey begins now.
00:18:01Mansfield looking to continue theirs, having navigated their way through rounds one and two.
00:18:11Mansfield Town in this first half, kicking towards what is today an empty cot, but still a sizable crowd here
00:18:19in the Steel City.
00:18:21It's Oates.
00:18:23He's done brilliantly and tested Davis.
00:18:26Terrific stuff from Mansfield and, more importantly, from Rhys Oates.
00:18:34All right, well, straight onto the head of Harmer.
00:18:37Here's Lewis Reid.
00:18:38Oh, stunner!
00:18:41What a hit from Lewis Reid.
00:18:44Back at the club, where his career began.
00:18:49And 5,000 who came to dream of Bramble Lane, now daring to believe.
00:18:59Harmer opens up for Harmer.
00:19:04Another belter at Bramble Lane, this time it's gone in the back of Mansfield's net.
00:19:09Another special from Gustavo Harmer.
00:19:13It has become his trademark.
00:19:16This has been a fabulous cup tie.
00:19:19Oops.
00:19:21Protecting it from Keanu Hoover.
00:19:23Never, ever gives anything up.
00:19:26And he's done really well again, Rhys Oates.
00:19:28Chong slides in, takes him down.
00:19:31It will be a free kick.
00:19:33Oh, he lunges in for the ball.
00:19:36And he doesn't get the ball.
00:19:39Lead it in.
00:19:41Helps on.
00:19:42And the last touch was a red and white one.
00:19:45It is going to be a Mansfield corner.
00:19:48Cry of yellows.
00:19:50From the travelling hordes.
00:19:55Plenty of air on that delivery.
00:19:57And there's Reid again.
00:19:59And he's scored again.
00:20:02Would you believe it?
00:20:06The former Blade having the time of his life back in the Steel City.
00:20:11Two fabulous finishes.
00:20:14Two goals he will never forget.
00:20:42And Mansfield Town are back in front.
00:20:48Stacks fans.
00:20:50Stacks fans pinching themselves.
00:20:53Sheffield United well and truly shaken by that.
00:20:59Oates.
00:21:00And he's scored.
00:21:00Oh, lovely touch.
00:21:01Who's away again?
00:21:01He's a way again.
00:21:02It's Rhys Oates.
00:21:03It's 4-1.
00:21:05oh this is fairy tale stuff for mansfield town scenes of unbridled joy and research
00:21:15who's been an absolute menace for a minute one gets his name in lights a truly extraordinary
00:21:25scoreline we have here get a load of this scoreline sheffield united one mansfield town four
00:21:34and that's four in three games now for reese oaks and the sheffield united are to get themselves
00:21:40back in this cup's eye something really needs to happen here bamford was being tugged at so sheffield
00:21:47united get themselves a free kick here this is a long way out for gustavo harma it is harma who
00:21:55goes for it it's a really good save from roberts got a firm hand on that
00:22:05harma lofting it high looking for mcguinness and bamford
00:22:10on from the bench to rekindle some hope for those in red and white on the day that he pens
00:22:17a new
00:22:18contract sheffield united are back in now with a sniff still lots to do and it's played two stacks four
00:22:31brooks sending the cross in oh it's an angle and just like that it's all becoming very nerdy again
00:22:41for mansfield whilst belief is growing for the blades well i hope you're keeping pace with this
00:22:48it is blades three mansfield four
00:22:53mansfield really needing to dig in now to keep the blades at bay
00:22:59burrows into bamford back for burrows who struck it and there's campbell what a block colossal from
00:23:05sweeney
00:23:09that was goal bound and ryan sweeney playing a real captain's role there
00:23:17mansfield on the cusp of something very special here lewis reed puts it into touch
00:23:26it is all over a fairy tale sunday afternoon for nigel clough and mansfield town who have knocked
00:23:35our championship sheffield united
00:23:40yeah when you fall one up we should have seen in the next five ten fifteen minutes out and we
00:23:43gave two poor goals away i thought you know when you look at the quality of the other goals and
00:23:48aimer's first goal as well that'd be anybody and any goalkeeper in the country uh but the other two
00:23:52were scrappy and avoidable and it obviously got them right back into it but then the other side
00:23:57of that i thought from that moment on in 65 minutes i thought we sort of didn't shrink we stepped
00:24:01up a
00:24:02little bit we defended brilliantly and we were a threat as well trying to get that fifth goal it
00:24:06wasn't all about sitting back i'm really disappointed disappointed that as i said as the game went on
00:24:12the manner of the goals are really are really poor and we've got to own it and they get the
00:24:18result
00:24:18that you know in the end they they deserve first time in the fourth round i think for 18 years
00:24:22or so something like that anybody in particular you'd like next not even thought about it hope
00:24:27it's kind in terms of you know you're not one of the big boys we were close to be i
00:24:31think last four
00:24:31balls of manu uh we were last out the bag which we've been a couple of times recently i think
00:24:36they
00:24:36forget about us you know they just leave the levers there in the bottom of the bag so we'll see
00:24:40who comes
00:24:41out this time well don't worry we are not going to forget about you because what a performance dion
00:24:47in front of five thousand fans and a brilliant performance for mansfield overall but particularly
00:24:53for lewis reed um who started his career at sheffield united he's not going to forget this
00:24:57afternoon the hurry is he no he'll want a copy of these goals by the way because he caught he
00:25:00scored
00:25:01two absolute screamers i mean i i don't know why sheff united haven't got anybody on on the edge of
00:25:07the box they've gone zonal they've gone man for man but these two players on the edge of the box
00:25:12i mean
00:25:12one of them being lewis reed you're asking for trouble lovely first touch bam have that top
00:25:18corner and i didn't learn their lesson no they didn't i mean it was quite brave from mansfield
00:25:22actually because they've let they've left um danny ing's 1v1 at the back um and two in the edge of
00:25:27the box but you know after the first goal surely they learned the lesson two on the edge of the
00:25:31box
00:25:31they do win the first contact on this header but again it falls straight to him great strike gets a
00:25:37good connection does get deflected fortunate a little bit but they didn't learn the lesson and it's
00:25:42two good strikes and uh it cost sheffield united today yeah it was a fascinating game wasn't it
00:25:46considering man's football 4-1 up at one point and then they got it back to 4-3 and that
00:25:52was on 65
00:25:53minutes um and i think that nigel clough summed it up really well there didn't he said they didn't
00:25:57shrink they had to hold on for 25 minutes and they were still a threat how impressed were you with
00:26:01their
00:26:01game management yeah really good i thought the um you know they showed a lot of character i thought
00:26:06they played better actually when it was 4-3 and then it was 4-1 um but you have to
00:26:10see the game out
00:26:10like you said you have to manage the game really well there's moments where your backs to the walls
00:26:13and you're defending and bodies in the box bodies on the line but i thought they were really really
00:26:18very good um and deserve to win yes we got our shock then didn't we well premier league leaders
00:26:22arsenal have been knocked out in this round in both of the last two seasons today they traveled to the
00:26:28south coast to face portsmouth fourth bottom of the championship jonathan pierce was at fratton park
00:26:34a great cup tight atmosphere this famous old ground the last time these two met the cup fifth round in
00:26:392020 arsenal won but michel arteta contracted covid and within days football have been shut down
00:26:45the bookies down here and his arsenal will catch as much as a cold here today portsmouth have not been
00:26:52passed this round since 2020 they make four changes from the crumpling 5-0 defeat at bristol city 10 days
00:26:59ago
00:26:59arsenal make 10 changes from their nil-nil draw with liverpool only gabriel stays in martinelli was
00:27:05badly injured here in the 2020 fa cup tie missed the rest of the season among 500 million pounds of
00:27:11talent on the bench defendant marley salmon who at 16 years and 135 days will be their youngest ever
00:27:18FA cup player should he come on
00:27:22arsenal have had third round hiccups in the last two seasons and gone out at this stage the last time
00:27:28they failed at round three three years in a row was uh back in the late 40s
00:27:36and white and hasn't played for arsenal since the end of december on they go
00:27:44blair chance good save by kepper hatu the rebounds in and portsmouth lead inside three minutes
00:27:52against the league leaders the top team in europe right now what a shock on a weekend of shocks
00:27:59arsenal appealing for a flag that didn't come what a start too much space on the edge of the penalty
00:28:06area
00:28:07chucked him with the initial shot carried by kepper should have done better because he pushed it
00:28:12straight out into the path of bishop and from there the goal gaped wide for him 1-0 to the
00:28:19championship
00:28:20side they have never beaten arsenal in the FA cup in four previous meetings they haven't beaten
00:28:25arsenal anywhere since march 1958 lewis skelly martinelli takes on his man gets across and it's dangerous
00:28:42arsenal seven for the first corner of the game
00:28:50as i say with the corner
00:28:52arsenal corner so deadly at the east with a flip on at the near post it's loose can they force
00:28:57it in
00:28:57they have done they're level they're all gonna think on the last touch and portsmouth run ahead for very
00:29:03long about four minutes another arsenal set piece goal really muddled defending goalkeepers boxed off
00:29:11doesn't get anywhere near it it might go in here off to zel that might be an own goal
00:29:18don't know whether he got the last touch no god's going to claim it but it might officially go down
00:29:22as an own goal by de zel there
00:29:28let's not forget portsmouth won this competition in 2008
00:29:32he carded the runners up two years later here's black shooting opportunity
00:29:37and the goalkeeper swirmed it away but didn't look comfortable
00:29:41sensible shot by harvey flair low across the greasy top surface
00:29:49today when you arrive with lots of preparation work old school on a4 sheets of paper
00:29:55and uncovered as we are day four sheets of paper turn to papier-mâché and become absolutely useless
00:30:04and there he with the run maduwek is in behind
00:30:07and he stumbled after the challenge was made it's just a corner
00:30:12that swanson went there all the way with him
00:30:14corner for arsenal he saw what they could do at corners the last time around and we've been seeing it
00:30:20all
00:30:20season three dark to the near post it's flicked on by martinelli arsenal it's a lovely glancing header
00:30:29portsmouth won arsenal two so many runs in there that beguile and bewitch and bamboozle defenders so much movement
00:30:39another set piece another arsenal goal
00:30:45there's a set piece man who punches up so much for arsenal
00:30:51is jesus lovely drop of the shoulder there and he's off and running and ben white is available
00:30:56this could be dangerous white low cross into the middle it's come to martinelli
00:31:01he's missed from there goodness me easier to score than the one he got
00:31:09deflected through to him and he's bobbled it against the woodwork
00:31:13tentative prod at the ball really no more than that maduwek
00:31:21always gone down it's a penalty defender wrong side to make the challenge swanson
00:31:28just before half time darts beyond him and swanson bumps him from behind
00:31:34and maduwek comes forward to check the penalty himself
00:31:38angled run for a left foot strike
00:31:44and puts it wide that's a bad miss your left footer with that sort of run up to reverse it
00:31:51and go that
00:31:52bottom corner you've got to be absolutely precise they'll let off them for portsmouth
00:31:59right
00:32:03and weke heavily done through the foul
00:32:08chopped off balance when he made the challenge quick release jesus into the box martinelli
00:32:13arsenal have a two goal buffer they took the free kick quickly portsmouth slow to react and martinelli
00:32:20gets his second of the game it's a lovely move and quick thinking by arsenal and they shouldn't be beaten
00:32:28for now speed of thought here
00:32:32lovely crossing by jesus perfect beautiful absolutely inch perfect
00:32:39closes in on double figures for another season martinelli
00:32:43so campbell watching on arsenal and promptly legend
00:32:52arsenal have just won 135 million pounds from the bench
00:32:58and here's madueke it's deflected it's a corner and he had three to his left hand side
00:33:04good block by reagan paul
00:33:07havoc's at the far post
00:33:10there's something if he can get a goal crosses into the near post area it's flicked it in
00:33:16and martinelli has a hat trick it's his first senior hat trick when he left here in pain
00:33:22in 2020 it was a different world it was pre-covid and comes back today and scores a hat trick
00:33:30and arsenal are 4-1 up
00:33:35arsenal are just about to make history i think because marley salmon born 16 years and 135 days ago
00:33:44will come on and become their youngest fa cup player
00:33:48up goes gabriel history is made
00:33:54that frightened bar and comes marley salmon
00:34:00is swift for portsmouth
00:34:04releases devlin can have a shot does have a shot stun kepper's fingers
00:34:10but they fall one down but they've been a credit to the club
00:34:13well they've got four martin only also hit the post been convincing for arsenal in the end
00:34:19i thought overall we were we're excellent for last parts of the game ultimately it was a
00:34:23bit too much for us from uh set plays and and also you know arsenal really put the squeezing us
00:34:27late on and but yeah you know overall very very positive i'd like to allow you for gabriel martinelli
00:34:32because the last time he was here he got a bad injury and was out for months yeah well uh
00:34:37that's
00:34:37football that changes i think he's shown a lot of personality as well with what he had to go through
00:34:42this week i think and um and yeah some very good news on kai as well coming back after so
00:34:47many months
00:34:48marley making his debut as well so uh yeah positive night
00:34:53well as arteta alluded to there a difficult week for gabriel martinelli after the conor
00:34:57bradley incident did end with us talking about a positive for him a first hat-trick of his career
00:35:04how good was he today he was he was pretty special there was a a couple of moments where
00:35:10you know he shouldn't really have been able to score goals and head the ball in the back of the
00:35:14net but
00:35:14he was lively and he made a difference for arsenal all day just for the patient the positions he takes
00:35:19up and how positive he is he always wants to go forward that's what we want to see from martinelli
00:35:24yeah given how the game ended it's kind of hard to remember that portsmouth actually did take the
00:35:28lead in this one but they let the game slip away phil and did you feel like some of the
00:35:32goals that they
00:35:33conceded were actually avoidable yeah look they made a great start to the game i thought they
00:35:37pressed arsenal really high won the ball back in a full-back position and got the goal from it
00:35:41um but i think if they're brutally honest and when they evaluate the the the game today i think
00:35:46you know to concede three corners concede three goals from corners is very disappointing if arsenal
00:35:52are going to break you down it's got to be from open play it's got to be from a nice
00:35:54little intricate
00:35:55little pass here you can see segacic there all he has to do is drop a couple of yards he's
00:36:00in the hole
00:36:01does neither lets the ball come in his job there is to get in front to win that ball to
00:36:06the near post again
00:36:07the same thing happens and thank you for arsenal um you can look you know what arsenal are going to
00:36:13do they've done it all season the three of the players the three of the main headers of the ball
00:36:17they'll directly run as soon as the ball is being taken and try and get the first contact and they've
00:36:22done it three times today but if you're a portsmouth point of view really poor really poor defending
00:36:26um they didn't learn a lesson um and didn't deal with it yeah it was happening again and again and
00:36:31as
00:36:32phil said then we know that arsenal is so strong from set pieces in particular corners yeah they are
00:36:37and i mean you cannot switch off as well i mean there's three ports of players you turn your back
00:36:44on the ball when the ball's still it's not rolling and you allow arsenal to take a quick one there
00:36:49i mean
00:36:49the ball in behind that back three is outstanding and um i just feel that they made it easy for
00:36:57arsenal
00:36:57arsenal are a better side they made it easy and they just kept getting it wrong i mean
00:37:02say that it's on the on the near post there it's not to take a little yard back phil yeah
00:37:06but even
00:37:07second it's i mean he's not the tallest of players so maybe they go with a different different man in
00:37:11the hole but it just didn't work everybody was getting first arsenal were getting first contact
00:37:15through every corner and i'm sure when he looks at it john massino tonight i'm sure he'd be disappointed
00:37:19to concede in the way he did well more arsenal set piece goals does mean that we get to check
00:37:23in
00:37:23once again on arsenal's set piece record and as it happens in case you hadn't noticed it is
00:37:28pretty good they have scored the most set piece goals in all competitions out of the top five
00:37:33european leagues and they are streets ahead it doesn't matter what competition who the opponents
00:37:39are they know how to score from set pieces yeah and you know what as good as the movement is
00:37:43and
00:37:44what phil's described there was absolutely spot on the delivery is the delivery is absolutely spot on
00:37:48all the time they get it right in that area but a quick nod to marley salmon coming on and
00:37:54playing
00:37:54for arsenal at 16 and 100 and odd years that's outstanding so good luck to that young lad yeah
00:38:00brilliant isn't it when we see um young players make their debuts in the fa cup okay well west ham
00:38:04haven't won any of the last 10 games so championship side queens park rangers might have fancied their
00:38:09chances at the london stadium today commentary comes from simon brotherton west ham make six changes as
00:38:16they look for their first win of the new year at the third time of asking among them there's a
00:38:21quick return to action after the africa cup of nations for aaron one visaka a first start for
00:38:26ezra mayers and an opportunity for mads hermanson in goal qpr sit three points off the playoffs in the
00:38:32championship and make four changes from their three-nil win over sheffield wednesday 20-year-old
00:38:37ryan collie replaces the injured ramon barell up front joe walsh starts in goal while the former
00:38:43newcastle midfielder isaac hayden and karamoko dembele also come into the side
00:38:55so far in this opening half enough nothing on target from either side could change now though
00:39:00here comes quesensio somerville looking for an opening very nearly finding it that's an excellent
00:39:05flying save from the qpr keeper joe walsh
00:39:11well familiar facial expressions among the faithful in this
00:39:15part of london pensive underwhelmed but still hopeful
00:39:25cook was trying to get in there quickly on castellanos pablo feeding it to magasso here's
00:39:31somerville here's a chance and a goal right on the straight of half time
00:39:36crescencio somerville and queens park rangers got to within seconds of half time on level terms
00:39:45but we're undone here good play by the new signing pablo the little flick into magasso
00:39:51magasso picking out somerville and somerville had the speed and the skill to get it out from under
00:39:58his feet and lash it home and under the current format of the competitions which is roughly 100 years
00:40:06qpr have been eliminated from the third round of the fa cup more than any other side 52 times
00:40:17here's bowen as tam looking to try and double their lead it's just out of reach for magasso
00:40:28collie making the run ahead now and collie in possession
00:40:32todibo's gone with it great play by ryan collie and still and todibo was stretched to the maximum there
00:40:42a run which almost carried him all the way in on goal excellent play from the 20 year old
00:40:52look at Mbengay go Dembele ahead of him here
00:40:58tracked by mayors he's going to take him on
00:41:08swung in by Mbengay it was a real stretch there for hermannson
00:41:12qpr knocking on the door really loudly here and the deflection carrying it behind
00:41:18to the roar of 9 000 traveling fans behind the goal
00:41:31and the shot from ryan collie cleared away
00:41:38encouragement though for julian stefan's team here
00:41:43but here's dembele decent one in there's a chance there's the equalizer
00:41:49it's cone for qpr it's 1-1 and they're alive in this fa cup tie
00:41:57it's an all too familiar theme for west ham this season
00:42:03but queens park rangers have been looking lively
00:42:07and kone got in there ahead of aaron one bisaka
00:42:11and the header beyond the despairing dive
00:42:15of max hermannson in the home goal game on in this london derby
00:42:24what a noise
00:42:29so check leads the charge aaron one bisaka will return the pass to him
00:42:35and west ham united will have a throw
00:42:49and it's a corner
00:42:51matson frustrated but he and his team with defending to do here now
00:42:59tricky one beaten away by walsh doesn't fall for somerville mayers
00:43:04hope for one back into the box castellanos big block by dunn goes for it again and another block by
00:43:10dunn
00:43:11that's what you call putting your body on the line for your team
00:43:17terrific defending
00:43:20pablo now continuing his run forward into somerville back with pablo
00:43:27castellanos looks for an opening still looks has a crack or good save and it needed to be
00:43:33it was a real finger stinger of a shot
00:43:37castellanos picked his moment and it certainly needed saving
00:43:43extra time is almost with us here
00:43:47it's in towards castellanos who stretches oh he was a whisker away from getting his toe on that one
00:43:57well it's turning into another long day for west ham
00:44:03west ham looking to try to avoid going out in the third round for the third season in a row
00:44:10and now with jared bowen up against sam field nicely done oh good save to deny so check
00:44:17well he's hardly played this season joe walsh you have to say he's performed very very well this afternoon
00:44:28bowen collecting picking out somerville alarm bells ringing for qpr here
00:44:34tell you what they're gonna have to come up with something good to get the ball past walsh again today
00:44:45scales
00:44:47into somerville oh brilliant
00:44:49superb from somerville what's the delivery like it's good it's brilliant tati castellanos with his first goal in the english
00:44:58game
00:45:02just what he needed just what the home crowd needed
00:45:06scars into somerville
00:45:09exquisite approach play from west ham's number seven the inch perfect delivery
00:45:16and castellanos gobbled up the chance west ham two queens park rangers one
00:45:23one of the best players in the world
00:45:25what did you like in particular that you saw from your players today
00:45:28i think the the fight the the way they they went
00:45:33about the duels i think we much improved on that aspect
00:45:37sometimes playing good football good combinations the goal is a good combination
00:45:42sometimes not so good some things i didn't like so much
00:45:45but um overall the desire and the courage and the spirit was there in the team that is important
00:45:53we pushed we gave everything today everything all the strength that we had on the pitch
00:45:58it was i think very good game in term of organization defensively in term of structure
00:46:04mindset of energy it was fantastic i want to congratulate as well our fans
00:46:09uh because it supports us a lot no no regrets i think the players gave uh everything and they did
00:46:16well today well a first win in 11 games for west ham we haven't seen nuno smiling for a very
00:46:23long time
00:46:24good to see him smiling today they really needed that didn't they yeah i'm delighted for him um he
00:46:28needed that he needed to win today uh needed a big performance you know his potential banana skin
00:46:33against qpr in the cup they've struggled in the league they're fighting for the lives at the bottom of
00:46:38the relegation zone in the premier league um i watched them a couple of games ago against forest
00:46:41in the league and i thought they were they were okay in the game and then unfortunately they
00:46:45conceded a penalty in the last minute but i'm pleased for nuno he needed that um and hopefully
00:46:49that can be the catalyst for them to try and gain a little bit of momentum and trying there but
00:46:53some
00:46:53of the games they've got coming up what spurs away sunderland chelsea it's not easy for them
00:46:57no it's not and they need all the points they can get in the premier league but going back to
00:47:01this game they'll be looking for all sorts of glimmers of hope what about somerville scored his first goal
00:47:05in 29 matches and was also involved in the other goal as well can he be a glimmer of hope
00:47:10well you
00:47:11hope so he's lively he's incredibly lively very very quick he's is an out and out winger all he
00:47:16wants to do is have the ball at his feet and turn and take on his defenders he did it
00:47:21all game i mean
00:47:22this is early early on by the way where he takes a little chop inside and he nearly starts the
00:47:27game
00:47:28with a goal and then he kept he puts himself into a situation where it's not coming to me wide
00:47:33i'm gonna
00:47:33have to step in just a little bit i mean his first touch wasn't great second touch was and the
00:47:38third
00:47:38touch is in the back of the net he was a real live wire and that's what west ham are
00:47:43gonna sort of
00:47:43hang their hat on players like that yeah i think you know look when you're down there when you're
00:47:48struggling when you're lacking of confidence you need somebody in your team who's got a little bit
00:47:51of something who can carry the ball who can take the ball and just shift it and stick one in
00:47:55the top
00:47:55corner whatever but i thought he was terrific today everything came through him he was a threat all day he
00:48:01was a
00:48:01constant threat in the attack every time he got the ball something looked like it was going to
00:48:04happen and you look at this piece of skill here he leaves the defender for dead um brilliant brilliant
00:48:10composure now and he executes his cross perfectly would have been easiest for him to to slash it or
00:48:14pick the wrong option but he picks the right option he dinks it to the back post perfectly executed
00:48:19and it's a great header it is so easy after doing that bit of skill to get excited yep and
00:48:25say shall i do
00:48:25some more just puts it in a great area really good play whilst west ham have maybe struggled for goals
00:48:30at time
00:48:30and there's been a bit of an over reliance some have said on jarrah bone at the other end of
00:48:34the
00:48:34pitch they've really struggled not to concede goals um nuno's been in charge now for 17 matches and
00:48:40still doesn't have a clean sheet to his name given the way nuno notoriously sets up his teams does that
00:48:45surprise you it does it does um but they look so fragile they look so fragile when they're out the
00:48:50possession um they're easy to play against at times um easy to score against conceding glorious chances
00:48:57against them um but it looks like there's such a lack of confidence and belief in the squad
00:49:01i feel for them it's difficult when you're down there it's tough for them but they've got to find
00:49:05a way to get out and players like some of them will have to step up and and play like
00:49:09he's played
00:49:09today yeah perhaps today it can be a catalyst for them okay then we're still to come we'll have
00:49:13highlights from four more ties plus the macclesfield manager john rooney is going to join us in the
00:49:18studio but if you've missed any of the weekend's cup action highlights of every game are on the
00:49:23bbc sport website and app you can catch the fourth round draw on radio five live and bbc sounds that's
00:49:28from 6 35 tomorrow evening and that's followed by live commentary of liverpool against barnesley
00:49:34and up next here on bbc one tonight it's the women's football show featuring highlights from
00:49:38the wsl's return after its winter break well it has been a sad week for all of those connected to
00:49:45leeds united after the passing of club legend terry urith their players wore black armbands for the game at
00:49:51derby county today martin fitcher was watching this one
00:49:56terry urith played for leeds the last time they reached the fa cup final back in 1973
00:50:02such a key figure in that fabulous era which featured a fierce rivalry with derby county
00:50:09today the championship side include fit again skipper lewis travis and danish under 21 international
00:50:16midfielder oscar fraulo who only signed days ago and is one of six changes leeds have made eight
00:50:23ampadu biol and gruev the trio that survived the goal karl dalo is in goal he conceded five on his
00:50:31last
00:50:31visit here with nottingham forest
00:50:39clark oh that's brilliant through the legs of tanaka japanese has got back at him though
00:50:45he's trying to get the free kick it's magnificent footwork
00:50:48by bobby clark so skillful with the ball at his feet
00:50:55forsyth takes it and it's a good one and it's just head and wide danny bart with the effort
00:51:02his last goal by the way came against leeds on new year's day 2025 he's not far away with that
00:51:09one is he
00:51:13you'll notice that uh both sets of players are wearing black armbands in tribute to terry yorath
00:51:18today derby county actually offered leeds the chance to have a minute's applause prior to kick-off
00:51:24today but uh leeds respectfully said no we'll wait until next week when we're at home to fulham and do
00:51:29it
00:51:29in front of our own supporters tanaka found a bit of space if you look left for mecha
00:51:38bark slides in it rolls towards peru who smashes his effort against the post
00:51:45tried to beat zeta's swim in his near post and very nearly did so and the post came to derby's
00:51:51rescue
00:51:54daniel farker has never lost in four visits to pride park beraton diaz giving it away again
00:52:03it's peru mecha ahead of him out comes zeta's swim caught the forward that could spell trouble
00:52:12it's a leeds penalty
00:52:15langas couldn't get to it zest some felt that he could and mecha tumbles over the sprawling leg of
00:52:21the goalkeeper and that is an obvious penalty as you're ever likely to see
00:52:28joel piru who moments earlier was denied by the right hand post of zetterstrom now has
00:52:36an opportunity from 12 yards it's saved by zetterstrom brilliant from the goalkeeper it stays at nil-nil
00:52:47and that will just perk up derby county and certainly their supporters who must have feared the worst there
00:53:00forward by full side blackett taylor on the side against born out only salverson in the middle at the
00:53:06moment for derby blackett taylor struggling to keep his feet here in goes brooch and diaz
00:53:12but derby county have the lead
00:53:17just moments after leeds failed to take the lead from the penalty spots derby go what up up the other
00:53:25end beraton diaz with it his third goal of the campaign but the architect cory blackett taylor
00:53:35there wasn't an awful lot for him to aim for here tried to go it alone could have died for
00:53:40the penalty
00:53:41but as the loose ball spilt out ben brereton diaz was on hand to crash it home beyond the helpless
00:53:51carl d'arlo
00:54:04gruev tonaka clever ball biel this looks promising piru letting it run it's
00:54:11not so it's one
00:54:16it's been all lead since the restarts and willie nanto rifles home his first goal since may
00:54:26it's a lovely move from leeds great dummy from piru nanto given a bit of space unleashed plenty of venom
00:54:34and zetterström given no chance to keep that out derby one leeds one
00:54:42the derby just haven't started in the second half
00:54:49he's just winning every 50 50
00:54:51peru now it's matcha ward across but hasn't stopped him now it's okafor
00:54:57peru great save from zetterström but tanaka is there to make it 2-1 and the flight stays down
00:55:05two goals in little more than three minutes and leeds united have turned this fa cup third round tie on
00:55:11its head
00:55:14just driving through the midfield with ease ward should have done better maybe
00:55:20okafor kept it alive piru denied by zetterström at full stretch but it bounces invitingly for the
00:55:27japanese international who couldn't fail to just push it home from a couple of yards out his third
00:55:33strike of the season and leeds now looking strong favorites to make it through to round four of the cup
00:55:45okafor turning away from langas nanto again in space far side for sythe reluctant to attack the ball
00:55:54nanto
00:55:55so here's the other goal scorer tanaka left for harrison third goal for leeds and surely it's all over
00:56:05another great save from zetterström how many has he produced today
00:56:10but for him this could be a much more comfortable score line for leeds
00:56:19just under two minutes of added time to play
00:56:23and one snap carries for leeds and it's off the four james justin is away on the far side galloping
00:56:29into the penalty area here he is and there it is goal number three for leeds united they finish with
00:56:38a flourish and james justin has his first goal in leeds united colors job done for daniel farker he can
00:56:47allow himself a wry smile as that one finds the back of the net
00:56:53assistant referee had actually flagged for a foul but good advantage by anthony taylor
00:56:58and then leeds really punished derby it's a good carry from mecha and despite his best attempts
00:57:06zetterström is beaten for a third time leeds well-deserved winners derby one leads three
00:57:15there's six six players there that you know we're always going to tire just after half of time just
00:57:19with the nature of where they are from a physical point of view um you know but to come off
00:57:25um off
00:57:26the pitch with with good minutes into players that are going to be needed in this tough championship
00:57:30season now um in the last 20 games was was really uh the main positive for me we needed 20
00:57:36minutes to
00:57:36come into this game but i think after that we created the unbelievable amount of chances sadly missed in the
00:57:41first half unbelievable amount and they scored out of their situations and always difficult but
00:57:45we kept the nerves we we stayed disciplined and cool and very mature really top performance of the
00:57:51lads who weren't worth today and we are all delighted well after an upturn of form in the league leeds
00:57:57united
00:57:57also through to the fourth round of the fa cup but daniel farker very happy dion but it could have
00:58:03been a
00:58:03very different story as we saw because derby were particularly impressive in that first half yeah did really
00:58:08good they went in half time one nil up deserved to as well could have been more than the one
00:58:12but um
00:58:13one player in particular corey blackett taylor was absolutely outstanding this is his first game back
00:58:19since the first game of the season so he's he's raw he's excited to be back he's showing all the
00:58:25energy
00:58:25and all the positivity that you want of a player that's been out for a long time i mean sebastian
00:58:31bornau
00:58:32must be delighted to see the back of him because he gave him an absolute nightmare his movement was
00:58:37good his end product was good and very very positive when he's got the ball at his feet
00:58:42always trying to create an a chance for himself or a chance for one of his teammates nice strength
00:58:48there as well and then he goes again and what he does here is he he weighs up his options
00:58:54he doesn't
00:58:55force it there's no pass on so he goes on his own doesn't work for him but he creates something
00:59:00for his
00:59:01teammate and i just believe that a player like that for derby is going to get lots of results
00:59:07lots of um goals for them as well they just couldn't keep that standard of game up in the
00:59:12second half and that's when the quality show yeah and of course leeds made changes at half time james
00:59:17justin came on just how much of a difference did hit quality makes the game into leeds yeah i thought
00:59:22it
00:59:22was a clever substitution um i thought obviously but now as dion said i had a really tough start to
00:59:26the
00:59:26game tough first half uh blackett taylor was really good against him he struggled but i thought james
00:59:31justin what it allowed them to do is he went into the right of the back three but what it's
00:59:35allowed
00:59:35them to do with in possession he could play in more advanced positions and be more of an influence
00:59:40further up the pitch they were only they were only pressing with one up top derby so it allowed them
00:59:44to
00:59:44to use james justin in a much more higher position i love this pass it changes the complete picture of
00:59:49game and then the the the the know-how where nanto is here from piero is it was excellent great
00:59:56contact
00:59:56great strike keeper probably couldn't do anything about it again these two in the middle of the
01:00:02park these two were terrific in the second half nanto takes up a great position again really threatening
01:00:08nearly gets on the end of it comes back to him and it's a great save from the keeper the
01:00:14keeper makes
01:00:15a great save but the defender switches off ever so slightly the back and then james justin as we
01:00:19spoke about just earlier rian brewster's got him there the play the break in the play bang he's
01:00:26off he sprints the full length of the pitch look at him trying to get back rian brewster's trying to
01:00:31get back now he sprints the full length of the pitch and he manages to get on the end of
01:00:35it and gets a
01:00:36great finish in the end but i thought it was a really clever substitution from daniel farke in the
01:00:39second half just it just allowed allowed leads to go three when they were in possession but two when they
01:00:46were out of possession when it comes to defenders because he's got more of a forward-thinking brain
01:00:50and he deserved his goal yeah as john used to study they alluded to then i think they probably really
01:00:55tied in the second half darwin it really showed they struggled to get about the pitch yeah leads
01:00:58now have only lost once since the start of december and that was of course that ridiculous game against
01:01:03newcastle that four three so they're certainly in an impressive position they're also in the
01:01:07relegation zone they're now eight points clear okay then let's see how three more ties played out
01:01:12today all between sides in the efl patrick geary rounds up the action starting with league two
01:01:16warsaw away and norwich norwich city's season has been the souffle that didn't rise delia smith
01:01:23doesn't do the catering anymore but philippe clement now does the coaching and perhaps there are signs
01:01:28he's finding the right mix mate urasek hadn't scored in his first year at norwich he took out his
01:01:34frustration on that finish warsaw are third in league two and might have posed a threat to norwich
01:01:39but they were overwhelmed jack stacy was just about kept out but jovan makama finished the job
01:01:45makama has been the standout performer for norwich signed from lincoln in august he's looked completely
01:01:52at home and emphatically made it three nil at the start of the second half manager clement said striker
01:01:58josh sargent requested not to play this game because of what he called transfer stuff a good time then for
01:02:04makama to do this it's a first canary's hat trick for man of the moment jovan makama warsaw have wobbled
01:02:14of
01:02:14late losing the last two they needed a lift step forward a young man playing his first season in league
01:02:20football courtney clark oh what a consolation that is quite some saddler's souvenir a goal of remarkable quality
01:02:31norwich were well ahead on quantity though they'd make it five late on tony springit's first canary's goal
01:02:37the icing on an expertly baked cake whole city have been going well in the championship and made
01:02:44only three changes for this tie but struggled to break blackburn down it took until extra time for
01:02:50them to go really close ollie mcburney's header save david akintola so unlucky mcburney offside
01:02:57out of form blackburn made eight changes it didn't click axel henriksen at least kept keeper dylan phillips
01:03:03honest true to form none of the first three penalties were scored either phillips saved blackburn's
01:03:10second kick from musa barraji the tigers took charge of the shootout from there akintola took
01:03:16the winning penalty and whole city are into the fourth round for the first time in six years
01:03:23new year new broom at west brom after ryan mason left they're in the hands of a caretaker james morrison
01:03:29has the keys but no one could find the lock in the first half until the game was stunned into
01:03:33life
01:03:34by swansea city's jisung om a superb strike but you get no extra marks for artistic impression
01:03:41and west brom was soon level from rather closer range josh madger reacted quicker than anyone around
01:03:47him won all into extra time a situation neither of these championship strugglers really wanted the
01:03:53baggies made the best of it jed wallace firing them in front but this time it would be swansea with
01:03:59the
01:03:59swift response zidane in usa's first goal for the swans sent the tide to penalties no separating them
01:04:06after six kicks each malik yalkuye had swansea's seventh so now it was over to 18 year old ollie
01:04:13bostock west brom a teenage kick from the fourth round a sweet finish in what have been sour times for
01:04:20the backers
01:04:23and this evening west brom have appointed former manchester united coach eric ramsey as their
01:04:28new head coach he joins from mls club minnesota united and replaces brian mason who was sacked on
01:04:33tuesday we are now delighted to be joined by john brooney manager of national league north club macclesfield
01:04:39fc in case you hadn't heard noctowl cup holders crystal palace yesterday well john have you kind of
01:04:46let it all sunk in yet what's it been like since no still feel surreal to be honest um you
01:04:51know
01:04:53something that hasn't been done for so long as a a non-league side not on a premier league side
01:04:58out of
01:04:58the competition you know and i was touched on in the press in the lead up to the game about
01:05:02it
01:05:03a little bit of hope but did i really believe it probably not and fair play to the lads because
01:05:08they
01:05:08went out there yesterday and i give everything i think from minute one i think it was the captain paul
01:05:13dawson who goes through that first there they didn't cut his head in the first minute but
01:05:16i think that set the tone for the game and you know focus on them they're the ones who go
01:05:21over
01:05:21that white liner and put that shift in or in the wildest dreams i didn't think we'd win the game
01:05:25they were immense weren't they phil they were terrific um paul dawson very terry butcher-esque
01:05:30with a bandage and bloody head around but no i thought they were terrific the way the way the
01:05:35we spoke off air before i think the way that they they played the manner of the game not just
01:05:40to win
01:05:40the game but the manner of the way they've won the game was terrific and um it's great to see
01:05:44it's great to
01:05:44see i mean sorry sorry i mean you look at these pictures now john and you think every part of
01:05:51that stadium is absolutely jam-packed were you expecting it to be you know the atmosphere that
01:05:57good yeah i'd expect the atmosphere because i know what our fans are about but to get the win
01:06:05made it that bit more special i think even if we were losing the game i know what the fans
01:06:09are about
01:06:09they get right behind because they know the context have you seen any of this have you seen any of
01:06:13this
01:06:13um yeah so when i got on last night i'm scrolling through my phone and actually after the second
01:06:19the second goal my little boys on the pitch with the players runs on the pitch so that's special as
01:06:24well but nowhere when you look back at the videos and you know you need to sit back and take
01:06:29it all
01:06:29in it's special did you we of course saw we had wayne as part of our tv coverage and i'm
01:06:33sure you've seen
01:06:34it by now he was he was pretty emotional said how proud he was of you did you have your
01:06:38family there as
01:06:38well and what was it like for them yeah it is a special day um for me the family and
01:06:44obviously
01:06:44wayne was doing the game with bbc but you know to have me my wife and kids there as well
01:06:50you know
01:06:50what a special day for the family of course it was an emotional occasion as well as well as being
01:06:55a
01:06:55really joyous one because of ethan mcleod's parents being there as well that must have made it more
01:07:00special and you saw them after the game didn't you yeah so ethan's dad dropped me a message the night
01:07:04before the game said good luck and saying ethan will be looking down on us and i did want to
01:07:10put
01:07:10that in the group to the lads the night before but i didn't know how they would have took it
01:07:15so i just
01:07:15decided to leave that because i knew they were coming to game and they get to see them after the
01:07:19game but when i went back in after the game it was um his parents were sitting in my office
01:07:24and you know
01:07:25that's a special moment for me to spend that little bit of time with them after the game especially
01:07:28after a result like that um but no ethan was a a top top lad and a lad who i
01:07:34brought in to the
01:07:35football club and give him that chance to come in and from day one i took a shine to him
01:07:41from day one
01:07:41and you know once we've got him in i had a special relationship with him and you know we'd give
01:07:46him
01:07:46little tips in training and he'd check you in the nighttime saying thank you and i've took everything
01:07:51you've told me on on board but no he was a special special boy with a special talent as well
01:07:56i'm sure he was watching down immensely proud cheering you all on is of course the draw tomorrow
01:08:01you're going to be at the draw is that right yeah yeah so um we're going to go with anfield
01:08:05so
01:08:05it's something we're looking forward to have who do you want who do you want that's what i want to
01:08:09know we want a big team away we want to play my league side of the way so you know
01:08:13maybe liverpool
01:08:14away arsenal away we've just seen man united to come out tonight i would have loved that one but
01:08:18you know i think any any of the premier league teams away would be unbelievable for the football
01:08:23club financially as well for teams at our level to go through this far into the fa club
01:08:27it means so much to the club everton are out there and i know you're an evertonian that must be
01:08:32disappointing yeah so when we got back and after celebrating on the pitch with the fans it was um
01:08:37the first result to look for was the everton one and once we've seen he got beat on penza was
01:08:42devastated but you know any any of the top teams away it'd be fantastic for the club well thank you
01:08:48so
01:08:49much for joining us that's actually all we've got time for tonight just to remind you the fourth
01:08:52round draw that we were talking about is live on bbc sounds and radio five live tomorrow at 6 35
01:08:56followed by commentary of liverpool against barnsley from anfield many thanks to dion to phil and of
01:09:01course john we didn't quite get another macclesfield but i'm pretty sure there'll be a decent stag party
