00:00Oh, what a goal!
00:02Oh, look at that action!
00:04That was phenomenal!
00:05Rooney!
00:07Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:49Two games on tonight's Match of the Day.
00:52High-flying Aston Villa and their formidable home record face Everton,
00:56and Newcastle travel to bottom of the table Wolves.
00:58We'll also have all the goals from yesterday.
01:01Ellen White and Joe Hart are in the hot seats this evening
01:04and we're going to begin with the English top division's most played fixture.
01:09Martin Fisher was at Villa Park for the 216th league meeting
01:12between Aston Villa and Everton.
01:17The first of those meetings between these two famous clubs
01:21was in the very first month of the inaugural Football League season
01:25back in 1888.
01:27A few hundred watched that one up the road at Perry Bar.
01:31Over 40,000 at Villa Park today
01:33to see if Unai Emery's men can move up to second place in the Premier League.
01:39Emi Martinez has recovered from the knot that kept him out of last week's FA Cup win at Spurs.
01:45Uri Tillemans and Oli Watkins came off the bench in that one.
01:48The striker has scored five goals in ten games against Everton.
01:52David Moyes is still without Illiman and Jai and Idrissa Gueye as they try to win the African Cup of
01:59Nations with Senegal.
02:00Michael Keane is suspended but former Villa poster boy Jack Grealish returns from his one-match ban.
02:07Tieno Barry gets the nod over Beto in attack.
02:17A draw enough to lift Villa up to second but they will be going all out for victory.
02:22They have won their last eleven games here.
02:25Twelve would be a club record but a bright start here for Everton and against the post.
02:30Martinez was beaten and the post saves Villa early on.
02:35Roel so close to giving Everton a dream start.
02:40Villa-Park rocked.
02:42Less than 20 seconds on the clock as the German scuffs that shot towards goal.
02:48And what a lucky escape for Aston Villa.
02:5311 seconds on the clock when Everton struck the woodwork.
02:59Pau Torres.
03:01Neil got a touch but it rolls in fightingly for Buendia.
03:04Might go to loan here Buendia.
03:05Instead goes for Rodgers.
03:08And Rodgers lifts it way over the crossbar.
03:11I think Buendia was caught in two minds there.
03:14Rodgers free on the edge here.
03:17But on his 100th appearance for Aston Villa, unable to find the target.
03:22So chances at both ends in the opening five minutes.
03:27Grealish.
03:31Goes back towards his own goal by McGinn.
03:36They know all about each other's game, of course.
03:41McGinn has just gone down here.
03:43The right knee appears to be the problem.
03:47And it looks as though Villa are going to have to make an early change here.
03:51I hope this is nothing too serious.
03:52It looked pretty innocuous.
03:57Well, he'll be a big miss today for Villa.
04:00I just hope that it's nothing long term because he will be a huge miss.
04:04If he's out for any considerable length of time.
04:10Villa coming in for this one.
04:12Third in the table.
04:14At one point with second place Manchester City.
04:18Tillemans.
04:19Great run here by Gesser.
04:21Wonderful pass, but poor finish.
04:24Straight out Pickford from close range.
04:26Beautiful ball from Uri Tillemans.
04:29Who can see a pass and can execute it.
04:32And Gesser, under pressure from Mikilenko, just didn't get hold of it at all.
04:37Best chance Villa have fashioned for a considerable time.
04:46Great work for Ruhl.
04:47And a chance maybe to drive on here for Everton.
04:51Left for Mikilenko.
04:53Decent hit.
04:54Martinez got fingers to it.
04:56It will be another Everton corner.
04:59Terrific work from Merlin Ruhl to win it and then teared up for Mikilenko.
05:04Needed the save.
05:07Mikilenko's last goal in the Premier League was the back end of last season.
05:11The two lightly targets for this corner, but they go short.
05:16And it's in from Garner.
05:17And then they're up.
05:18And they scored.
05:20O'Brien.
05:21But the flag is up.
05:22It won't count.
05:26Steven Meredith, assistant referee, far side, flagged instantly.
05:31You can see there, as it's delivered by Garner.
05:36I think it was Armstrong who was in an offside position.
05:43Well, the word from Stockley Park is that the on-field decision stands.
05:48Harrison Armstrong in an offside position.
05:50And he did impact the defender's ability to clear that cross.
05:58Way to step it up, Aston Villa.
06:02So I'm trying to do something about that now.
06:04It's a great burst by the Dutchman.
06:06Good cutback, Rodgers!
06:08O'Brien in the way.
06:10He must have thought that was a goal when it left his left boot.
06:15Well, Matt Sonoma saying to his teammates,
06:16look, I'm fed up with this, I'm going to have a charge forward.
06:20Brilliant run.
06:22Terrific cutback.
06:23And Rodgers denied by O'Brien,
06:25who moments earlier thought he'd put Everton in front, up the other end.
06:32Watkins was on his heels, O'Brien's clearance drops to Tillemans, though,
06:36and now on to Buendia.
06:38Mattson across on that far side as well.
06:42Tillemans.
06:45Guess at that.
06:46Got up well against the bar.
06:48Pickford was beaten.
06:50Watkins keeps it alive.
06:51It's Mattson.
06:54Tillemans.
06:58Mattson against McNeil.
07:00And it's behind in front of the corner.
07:03Well, guess at that close for a second time.
07:07Attacking this strongly at the back post,
07:10able to get up above Michalenko.
07:11It's dropping, but not sufficiently.
07:14And we stay at 0-0.
07:20The way by Cash, good clearance, Rodgers.
07:23Can he get away from Garner?
07:24Garner has to be careful, having already been booked.
07:27Rodgers now carried it a long way.
07:30There's no push in the back there.
07:31Referee was right on top of it.
07:32He didn't see it.
07:34Most of Villa parked in.
07:36There's a big call here for Tony Harrington.
07:39Rodgers with a great run here,
07:40but Garner there surely pushes him in the back, doesn't he?
07:43I don't think it was ever going to be given as a penalty,
07:45but a free kick in that kind of position
07:48might have been valuable from an Aston Villa point of view.
08:02Oh, mistake by Paltarez, McNeil!
08:06Spilt by Martinez and Barry, scores!
08:11Everton take the lead!
08:14Tieno Barry!
08:16Well, momentary there, he looked a surprise.
08:19Has anybody else in the ground
08:20that he managed to find the back of the net?
08:22He has been scoring a few of late.
08:25That's his third and his last four in the Premier League.
08:28The error by Paltarez proves costly for Aston Villa.
08:34Martinez didn't cover himself in glory either.
08:39What a turn-up this is, but in the context of the game,
08:43no great surprise.
08:45Full marks to McNeil for trying to take it on from there.
08:48Martinez should have done better.
08:50It's a delicate finish from Tieno Barry.
08:53And Everton are in front at Villa Park,
08:56a ground where they rarely score,
08:58and a ground where they haven't won in the Premier League for ten years.
09:02Might that goal liven up Aston Villa?
09:07Tiedemann's available.
09:09He's looking for Cash, who's in behind Greenish.
09:12It might fall for Gessart.
09:14And blasted over the bar again by Rodgers.
09:18It's an opportunity of sorts for the England man,
09:21but again it's one that Villa cannot make the most of.
09:25Wild in the end and in amongst the whole ten.
09:29England coach Thomas Tuchel rushing from upstairs.
09:32I've been impressed with the quality of that finishing.
09:39Bogart, Cash still free to his right.
09:42Can he find a decent cross?
09:44Instead it's an opportunity for Tillemann.
09:46Slow ball in, all the way across,
09:48and then hoofed behind by Paterson.
09:52Several Villa players with their arms raised here appealing for a possible penalty.
09:57Tony Harrington in touch with today's VAR Paul Howard.
10:04Quickly checked and cleared.
10:08No touch off O'Brien's arm.
10:11He can get himself set for this latest corner.
10:15So Villa's first corner of the second half,
10:17and they've gone short to Buendia.
10:20Changed the angle of delivery.
10:23Tchaikovsky got up well.
10:25Clearly with a strong challenge.
10:27It's Rodgers!
10:28Oh, what a save!
10:29What a save by Jordan Pickford!
10:33England denies England in front of the England coach.
10:36That was magnificent.
10:39It's top corner from Rodgers,
10:41and Pickford able to stretch and push his arm up
10:45and get vital fingers to this.
10:48Top draw save from a top quality goalkeeper.
10:53He wants his ninth clean sheet of the season, Jordan Pickford.
10:59Glum faces amongst Villa supporters.
11:01Don't often see that at Villa Park.
11:03So used to seeing their team succeed here.
11:06But today, they have been very below park.
11:12This will be the last chance for Aston Villa.
11:15On my watch, we've got just over 60 seconds of added time remaining.
11:22Everton back in shape.
11:27Konza unhappy with the options available to him.
11:32He's found Tillemans, who drives it in.
11:35Headed goal was by Buendia!
11:36Pickford was leaping to his right, but wasn't required.
11:40And that is probably that at Villa Park.
11:45Flying header from Buendia.
11:47Pickford was concerned.
11:48Didn't need to be in the end.
11:51And there goes the final whistle.
11:53Rare failure at home for Unai Emery and Aston Villa.
11:57Their run of 11 straight wins here comes to an end.
12:00And with it, their chance to go second in the Premier League table.
12:04They came up against a typically resilient Everton side
12:07who pick up their first league win here since 2016,
12:11courtesy of Tieno Barry's second half strike.
12:15It finishes Aston Villa nil.
12:18Everton one.
12:20Incredibly satisfying.
12:22I think more to do with, you know, what we've not got at the moment.
12:25And that's not discrediting the boys who played because they've done so well today.
12:29But, you know, we couldn't just turn up here and try and get a result.
12:32We've sort of tried to prepare most of the week how we could try and get a result against them.
12:36We stuck at it. We never gave in. You know, we didn't give up anything easy.
12:39We didn't come here and completely shut up shop.
12:41I thought we tried to make opportunities when we could.
12:44It's a Premier League. Each match is very difficult to win.
12:46And more for us because we are not contended to be in the top four like we are now.
12:53But we are really doing a fantastic season.
12:56But not today because, of course, we can lose against Everton because they have very good players.
13:02They have very strong structure tactically as well.
13:05And the coach is a good coach. And today they compete fantastic and they deserve to win.
13:09You want to win every game, but obviously it's not going to happen.
13:14Every team in the Premier League is good.
13:17We knew that Everton's away record in the last five games was really good.
13:21So we knew it was going to be tough.
13:23But, look, games come thick and fast. We have to put this to bed and move on.
13:27You must feel as though you're on something of a roll at the moment.
13:29That's three goals in your last four games in the Premier League.
13:33You know, it's my job. I need to score. So I didn't score a lot, but I tried to score.
13:39And today I have just one chance and I put in, so I'm happy.
13:42What people have missed in Everton's performances away from home is the number of clean sheets you're keeping at the
13:47moment.
13:47I think that's five in the last six in the Premier League.
13:50We try to be solid. I don't know any good teams who are not good defensively.
13:54You know, I think if you're not good defensively, then you're going to have to be scoring loads and loads
13:58of goals.
13:59So we can't score loads and loads of goals.
14:01So we have to make sure that we're strong defensively and away from home.
14:05We've done that pretty well.
14:07And he was delighted with the result.
14:09David Moyes talked about the determination in terms of the performance.
14:13But what do you think that they did particularly well against the Villa side have won their last 11 at
14:18home in all competitions?
14:19Yeah, I feel like I want to highlight the midfield for Everton.
14:24Garner, Armstrong and also Roll.
14:26And they were the two, in particular, Armstrong, Roll, that had the highest distance covered.
14:31Armstrong is 19 tomorrow, Roll 23-year-old.
14:35Quite an inexperienced midfield.
14:37Their first choice maybe would be Dewsbury Hall and Adrissa Gueye, but they're not available.
14:41So they're in the game. They're starting.
14:44Two Premier League starts from now.
14:45And this is 11 seconds into the game, really highlighting their endeavour and intent, Roll hitting the post.
14:52And then I want to highlight their midfield here.
14:55They're well connected, but they're also cutting off the passing lanes for what Aston Villa normally want to do.
15:01Put their foot on the ball, but then where can I play?
15:03Can I play midfield? Can I play a little bit higher into McGinn?
15:07No. Roll's front-footed.
15:09He's putting them under pressure, really stopping their rhythm of play, showing their endeavour, their enthusiasm.
15:16Yes, they get a foul, but that's the intent they want from this midfield.
15:19And that was throughout the game.
15:21This is Roll's second Premier League start.
15:23And look at this for an unbelievable turn.
15:25Straight through that midfield of Aston Villa.
15:28And then causes Everton to have a shot on target as well.
15:31So this was just throughout the game and what I really liked.
15:34And then Garner giving that little bit of space.
15:36And look at that for a cross-field ball.
15:39And then really started them on the attack as well.
15:41But not just going forward, but then also in defence as well.
15:45Staying connected.
15:47And also they're blocking shots.
15:49That's what Aston Villa wanted to do.
15:50They wanted to have shots.
15:521-0 up in this position now.
15:54Wanting to get hold of that three points.
15:56Morgan Rodgers, huge player for Aston Villa.
15:58Not having it.
15:59So Garner.
16:00Slide and tackle.
16:02Straight away.
16:02On the front foot.
16:03Want to play forward.
16:04And then this is the goal.
16:06Pressure from Barry.
16:08Disappointing mistakes from Torres and Aston Villa.
16:12McNeil straight onto it.
16:13Curling finish.
16:14And then Martinez.
16:15He wants to catch it.
16:16He drops it.
16:17But who's there?
16:18Barry.
16:19Front footed.
16:20But what a finish that is.
16:21Cool, calm and collected.
16:23I'd be very happy if that was me to be honest.
16:25But he's straight on it.
16:26He just feels like so full of confidence at the moment as well.
16:31Third goal in four games.
16:32And look at this for a smile.
16:34Someone happy and delighted to be scoring goals for Everton.
16:37Yeah, giving everyone a little chuckle at the end with his thumbs up to his head.
16:40In terms of the game itself, in terms of that goal, it was a great finish from Tiano Barry.
16:44But again, it was a mistake from Aston Villa.
16:47And they weren't quite at the races today.
16:49We'll look at that shortly.
16:50But Everton's away form has been so impressive.
16:54In fact, since David Moyes has come in, they've won 10 games away from home, which is level only with
17:00Arsenal.
17:00That's been really impressive.
17:01And this result could have been even more impressive for them as well.
17:05But the goal was disallowed.
17:07And I know it was mentioned in commentary.
17:09Martin Fisher did mention it there.
17:10Just clear that up for us, Joe.
17:12Yeah, no problem.
17:13And as you mentioned, they've been excellent away from home.
17:15When they were knocking on the door, they were very resolute in the game.
17:19And we're going to look at the offside goal here.
17:22O'Brien's highlighted.
17:23Look, he scores the goal.
17:24It feels like a good goal.
17:26I understand why people will be disappointed.
17:28By the end of the day, Armstrong is in an offside position as that ball's crossed.
17:33And he makes a deliberate attempt at the ball, which affects the defending.
17:39It's given on field as offside, checked by VAR, and that's upheld because it's the right decision.
17:46And so while it may be frustrating for Everton, it was correct by the letter of the law.
17:52Aston Villa did have their chances in this game.
17:56But did it feel like they were just a bit off that team who've had that fantastic run, particularly at
18:01home?
18:01Yeah, I think it did.
18:02And I think, like I say, they've been excellent and they've been brilliant to get in the position that they
18:06are.
18:06But the Premier League, such fine margins.
18:09And we heard Konza talk about everyone's good in the Premier League.
18:12And Villa weren't bad today.
18:13Morgan Rodgers, who I'm going to talk about now, was not bad today.
18:16He was right up there in the running stats.
18:18But he's Villa's talisman this year.
18:20Top assists, top goalscorer.
18:22And Buendia, he knows he wants to find his man.
18:25Just leaning back a little bit.
18:26And he's really found his form recently.
18:28And with Villa winning games and scoring goals, this man is at the heart of it.
18:32A little one-two again getting into the area.
18:34But he just couldn't quite get his balance.
18:35We know in previous weeks he gets set and he pokes that in the corner.
18:39He's such an effective player and he's having such a good season after a bit of a slow start by
18:44his standards.
18:45Really good positions here.
18:46Mattson finds him.
18:48It's a good block.
18:49Everton, of course, they're resolute.
18:50They get bodies in there.
18:51Is this a little sneaky one from Austin McPhee?
18:54Who knows he always gets a bit of air time, doesn't he?
18:56But they spot him, edge of the box.
18:58That kind of wobbly technique I've talked about in previous weeks.
19:00Comfortable save there for Jordan Pickford.
19:03But those were probably best chances coming up here.
19:06Leaning back again.
19:07Just rushing it.
19:08Just not quite getting set.
19:09But this is the moment of the match, I think, from a Villa point of view.
19:13Just gets the curling shot off.
19:15And that's when you want your star man to step up for Everton.
19:19And he does.
19:19Brilliant feat from Jordan Pickford.
19:21Look, I think he actually makes that save look very easy.
19:24But that's not because it is easy, because he's so fast across his line.
19:27Springs.
19:28Absolutely huge moment for a goalkeeper.
19:30But absolutely devastating for Morgan Rodgers.
19:33Yeah.
19:33And to be honest, that was the most difficult chance of the game for him.
19:37And like you said, he usually would score those.
19:40He's not had more shots than that and not scored in a game in the league for Aston Villa.
19:44So we know that he would normally convert at least one of those chances.
19:47But it's a real missed opportunity.
19:49And that may be led to some of the frustration that we heard from Unai Emery in his post-match
19:54interview,
19:54where he was quite snippy at times with lots of interviewers.
19:58And you can understand the frustration from a position where they could have gone second.
20:04I knew he'd be fuming.
20:06I knew the moment for this game finished and the way Everton scored and they couldn't quite turn their chances.
20:11He would be raging because he understands what it takes.
20:14It's not just about the pretty stuff.
20:16It's about battling through when the game's tough, when your squad's bare, you know, losing people in the week.
20:22Obviously, McGinn going off is massive for Aston Villa.
20:24That would have hurt them.
20:25But he expects his team to find a way.
20:27And as he said, Everton have got a really good coach and strategically beat them today.
20:31Yeah, as Joe said there, there's other stuff going on in the background.
20:34Yes, John McGinn was injured today, but Marlon going off to Roma just, what, three days ago.
20:39The timing of which seems very strange.
20:42There are lots of issues that are leading up to the frustration for Emery.
20:47Yeah, definitely.
20:47And, you know, he can be disappointed, obviously, with the performance.
20:51Obviously, an amazing home record.
20:53Chance to obviously put a little bit of pressure on Arsenal.
20:56And obviously go ahead of Man City as well.
20:59And then, like you say, you know, losing Marlon.
21:03That impact off the bench, I felt, was missing today as well.
21:06Obviously injuries as well.
21:07I think it's just accumulation of a lot of things all at once.
21:10And he wants, obviously, the help from the board.
21:14Maybe there's, you know, someone coming in soon potentially to help with that.
21:17But you could really sense his frustration.
21:19Not with his players.
21:20No.
21:20From higher up within the club.
21:22To help him.
21:23Help them push for that title.
21:24And help his squad as well.
21:26Especially for impact off the bench.
21:29And after the Manchester derby.
21:30And Aston Villa losing today.
21:33Title very much, very firmly in Arsenal's hands.
21:36Yeah.
21:37And, you know, they deserve to be where they are.
21:39And they keep turning them out.
21:40Obviously, they would love to win yesterday.
21:42But just going back to Aston Villa.
21:44I noticed in the stadium today, it didn't feel like a stadium or a team that was chasing Arsenal.
21:49It felt like a stadium and a team that was kind of hopeful that they'd turn up and get a
21:53good result.
21:53And everyone needs to be on board.
21:55And like I say, that Unai Emery interview after just felt quite poignant.
22:00Now, Wolves are still rooted to the foot of the Premier League table.
22:04But they are unbeaten in four games in all competitions under Rob Edwards.
22:07They were at home to Newcastle, who've only won twice away this season.
22:11Steve Bauer watched this one.
22:14Whilst it's certainly a different looking fixture to a few weeks ago,
22:18Newcastle are in great need of extending their recent Premier League momentum
22:21as they search for their fourth win in a row.
22:24Recent signs for the host, though, have finally brought some positivity.
22:29Brazilian Andre also returns today in place of John Arias, who drops to the bench.
22:34Matthias Mane aims to become the fifth 18-year-old
22:38to score in three successive Premier League matches.
22:42Eddie Howe is able to welcome back the experience of Kieran Tripp here in defence.
22:47Tonali and Valtamada also return.
22:49While top scorer Harvey Barnes, who scored here last season,
22:52replaces the injured Jacob Murphy.
22:58Board's buoyed by the fact that at least they've put five points on the last nine on the board.
23:03Newcastle searching for just their third away win all season.
23:09Barnes.
23:11Almost left Tripp here short, in from Barnes.
23:14Valtamada!
23:16He's disappointed.
23:18And you can understand why.
23:20Because he got a good sight of this.
23:23Measured delivery from Barnes.
23:25He won't need telling.
23:29Krejci.
23:35A fall for a Wolves throw.
23:45Launched by Mosquera.
23:47Santiago Bueno got the flick.
23:49Then Hwang.
23:50And then Mane.
23:53Unfortunately for Wolves and the 18-year-old straight at Nick Pope.
23:57First touch was important.
23:59Nice bit of skill from the teenager.
24:07Hall.
24:11Just haven't got enough of those balls into the box in this first half, Newcastle.
24:16Can Lewis Hall do so here?
24:20And he's got Newcastle in another corner.
24:24A little over three minutes of the first half remaining.
24:31Can they threaten from here?
24:33It's a deeper one.
24:34It's an excellent delivery.
24:36It's an almighty scramble.
24:38The referee's whistle's gone in the end.
24:40Jose Sauer is delighted to get a hold of it.
24:44So many bodies in there at the back post.
24:46Chau and Botman initially jumping.
24:51Jay Linton swinging and in the end it was a Wolves free kick.
24:57Tonali.
25:00Hall had nobody behind him.
25:09Maracadaro with a header into João Gomes.
25:14Chachua.
25:19Mane.
25:21Just the one minute of time to add on at the end of this goalless first half.
25:31Maracadaro with a hold up.
25:32Chau Gomes, can he get his shot in?
25:36Santiago Bueno wants to cut inside.
25:39Does!
25:41And that wasn't quite dipping enough from the 23-year-old.
25:46Always wanted it on his left foot.
25:49Decent try.
25:58Gordon for Newcastle.
26:05Chau Gomes.
26:08Again like Andre.
26:11Not allowing Newcastle any time on the ball.
26:14Chau comfortable on it there.
26:21Barnes.
26:23Gimreich has the angle for the cross.
26:24Joe Linton came in.
26:27Lawson.
26:28A clean connection.
26:30And Chachua.
26:32Did well from Wolves point of view.
26:35He tied it well.
26:37Joe Linton just lost the play to the ball.
26:42Plenty.
26:43Being discussed.
26:48Bissat.
26:50Elanga waiting.
26:53Caired only as far as Barnes.
27:02Lovely from Gimreich.
27:04First time from Barnes.
27:07No Newcastle player.
27:10Close enough to the cross.
27:12Nothing wrong with the delivery.
27:16Frustration continues.
27:20Joe Linton.
27:23Space for Barnes to run into.
27:27Mosquera's challenge.
27:29And it's a yellow card for the Colombian.
27:33And a Newcastle free kick.
27:36A challenge from the side here.
27:38From Mosquera.
27:41Didn't hit the ball.
27:44How Newcastle can do with a moment of magic.
27:50And this stalemate.
27:53Trippier!
27:55That had Jose Saar scampering right across his goal.
28:00It wasn't bending and curling just enough.
28:05Still no shot on target for Newcastle.
28:08Last time they went a whole Premier League game without one.
28:13Almost a year ago against Liverpool.
28:16Barnes wants it.
28:18And receives it.
28:19Visser.
28:20Top defending again from Krejci.
28:28Strand-Larsen on Hall.
28:32Newcastle free kick.
28:35A little kick there.
28:43Inside the final six minutes.
28:45In from Trippier.
28:47Can it drop Newcastle's way?
28:49Gimaraish.
28:50Jose Saar away.
28:51And then he gathers the header from Joe Linton as well.
28:55And rolls it straight out to Mane.
29:00He's taking on Hall.
29:02And he does his job and he's then fouled.
29:06And finally Newcastle
29:08pulls Jose Saar into a save.
29:12And finally
29:14they have an effort on target.
29:17From their captain on the spin.
29:19A save you would expect
29:21Jose Saar to make.
29:22As was the second one from Joe Linton.
29:2585 minutes it's taken them
29:26to have an effort on target.
29:32Mane.
29:37Run back by Barnes.
29:40Elanga.
29:42Being chased by Krejci.
29:45The pull back towards Gimaraish.
29:47Who went down
29:49rather easily on first viewing.
29:59Joe Linton.
30:01Here's Gimaraish again.
30:10Back in for Malanga.
30:12Blocked.
30:13For Chachua.
30:18A little over 90 seconds of stoppage time to go.
30:24That's a Newcastle free kick.
30:27Andre yellow card.
30:30Challenge on his fellow Brazilian Gimaraish.
30:34For that.
30:39Last minute of stoppage time.
30:42Trippier.
30:44Giant header from Muscira.
30:48It's got to go back in from Kieran Trippier.
30:51He knows that at this stage.
30:54And it's dropped to Gimaraish!
30:57Well that was the chance.
31:00That was the one they've been waiting for.
31:03With 20 seconds of stoppage time remaining.
31:06And the captain completely miscued it.
31:10And that just about sums up Newcastle's day.
31:15I thought we controlled the game but didn't have the cutting edge today.
31:19Chance creation was a bit of an issue.
31:20I thought they defended well.
31:22They defended very low, very compact.
31:24It was difficult for us to find space on the pitch.
31:27But still saying that, we were looking for a moment to win us that game.
31:30A moment of magic from an individual or a set play.
31:33And I thought we had the opportunities the longer the game went on.
31:35But we didn't take them.
31:35When a new coach comes in, you need to see an upturn.
31:39An upturn in performance levels and in results.
31:42And we're getting both at the moment now.
31:44So we want to continue that.
31:45Like I said, we're not there yet.
31:47We're not explaining exactly how I want us to play.
31:48And we're having to find a way to be competitive.
31:53And we are being that.
31:54Home and away.
31:55So that's a positive.
31:56But their confidence levels are returning now.
31:59You know, it was really difficult when we first came in.
32:00It's been a long, long time since we've won a game.
32:02We've got points.
32:03So it's taken a little bit of time.
32:05But over the last month or six weeks,
32:08the lads are sort of gathering that again and believing in themselves more.
32:13Well, they are believing in themselves.
32:14And we'll talk about Wolves in just a second.
32:17Because there's something really interesting going on there.
32:19And interesting times for Newcastle as well.
32:22Although not necessarily in a positive sense.
32:24Because players who were scoring last season or even earlier this season
32:27are just not firing, Ellen.
32:29Yeah, we saw it particularly in this game.
32:31They wanted to get the ball wide, crossing areas.
32:34And then we felt like, you know, the connections weren't quite there.
32:38Were they thinking outside the box?
32:40And in particular, we'll point out, obviously,
32:43the starting three of Gordon, Voltemada and Barnes who are up top.
32:47And it's just those connections.
32:48But then also I feel like it's your endeavour, your enthusiasm,
32:52your movement to get on the end of a cross as well.
32:55And Voltemada, seven games without a goal.
32:57So he's a little bit lacking in confidence.
32:59Joel Linton, like this left-hand side, wanting to whip it in.
33:03But then I just think, as a striker, you're running through.
33:05You're putting everything on the line.
33:07You're throwing yourself at the ball.
33:09But then Barnes, I think, just take a breath.
33:11Who's around you?
33:13Tenali's there. Can you just whip that into him?
33:15He's potentially got a shot on goal.
33:16But no, he wants to get the ball in the box and cross as well.
33:19I think this is throughout the game.
33:21You know, they just wanted to get the ball in the box.
33:23But can they be a little bit cuter?
33:25Into Joel Linton, maybe Hall around the corner as well.
33:28But there's three in the box.
33:29They're whipping it into the box.
33:31But obviously Wolves defended well.
33:33But it's just getting on to the end of the pass as well.
33:36This one, I think, is really tricky for a centre-forward.
33:38You've got Trippier.
33:39Could he go out wide?
33:42Allow Newcastle forwards to get into the box.
33:44There's no pace on the ball.
33:47Voltemada's coming from a standing position as a striker.
33:49It's so hard to get any power onto a header there.
33:52And then again, for me, this is what I dreamed of as a striker.
33:55Look at this ball.
33:57Like, perfect.
33:58Where you want it.
33:59Six-yard box.
33:59But who's in there?
34:00Your two centre-halves who are like,
34:02guys, look, I think we're going to try it and get a goal here.
34:05I love that enthusiasm as well.
34:07But here's Bruno.
34:08The guy that you think for Newcastle,
34:10he's the one that scored the goals,
34:12got them out of a lot of trouble.
34:13And I think that summed it up their afternoon.
34:15And their away form has been a cause for concern all season.
34:19But I don't think necessarily for the reasons.
34:22I mean, obviously, it's because of the results.
34:23But in terms of the way that the games are panning out,
34:26I don't think it's for the reasons you'd expect.
34:27You'd normally expect these figures to be the other way around,
34:30that they would have, for example, more possession at home.
34:32But it feels like the more they have of the ball,
34:35the less they do with it.
34:36Yes, it feels like the more they have it,
34:38it's almost like they're out of ideas at times.
34:40They want to play that counter-attacking style football,
34:43attack down the width, use that power and enthusiasm
34:46and an attacking prowess.
34:48But then when they had the ball, they kind of run out of ideas.
34:50They kind of just got up, back through, cross it into the box.
34:53And I just think they lacked the clinical edge,
34:55but also the connections as well with the front line and midfield.
34:58Yeah, you feel that kind of energy at St James' Bark
35:01when the ball turns over and they're able to get on the front foot.
35:03Away from home, Wolves just sat in.
35:05Of course, they're going to sit in.
35:06They're not going to be the dominant side today
35:08and they just look like they ran out of ideas.
35:10Wolves, on the other hand, have improved so much under Rob Edwards.
35:14And he was saying himself, you know, people will look at the results
35:17and they'll say, that's when it changed.
35:20But he said the performances changed before the results came.
35:23Yeah, I think it was lacking.
35:24We saw an interview a few weeks ago from Matt Doherty
35:27when I actually had to reach out to him.
35:28Because he looked absolutely distraught.
35:30He looked done.
35:31He looked kicked in.
35:32He looked like he...
35:32The club, look, it looks like they're going to go down.
35:35I hate to say that, but it's factual.
35:37But how are you going to go down?
35:38Are you going to go down with fight?
35:39Are you going to go down with spirit?
35:40Are you going to build something for the future?
35:42Because it's not the end of the world if you do go down.
35:44And I just feel like they're starting to get that momentum,
35:46something that the crowd can get behind.
35:48And Rob Edwards can certainly be proud of.
35:51Look, obviously we criticised Newcastle there
35:53for not being clinical in the final third.
35:55Wolves don't have that.
35:56They don't at all.
35:57But they're showing endeavour.
35:58They're in-game.
35:59Xao Gomez on the front foot here.
36:01Turning the ball over.
36:02Getting numbers up behind him.
36:04And at least creating chances,
36:05which they weren't doing at the start of the season.
36:07They look a little bit more comfortable in the 3-5-2.
36:10Look, that's what he talked about.
36:12Confidence.
36:13Getting on the half turn.
36:14Mane, when he's coming,
36:15has been an absolute shining light for Wolves.
36:17An unexpected shining light.
36:19And puts in a dangerous ball there.
36:21This is absolutely brilliant.
36:22From a team that's shot of confidence to go from Jose Sarr.
36:27And if something is going to happen,
36:28you think it's going to be a Rocadare and Mane
36:31who are going to make it happen this season.
36:33Again, look, of course, it's not perfect.
36:35But the fact that they're able to strip Newcastle like that,
36:38there's going to be big moments in games.
36:40And this is what Rob Edwards needs to see.
36:42He needs to see ten players behind the ball,
36:44willing to put their bodies on the line.
36:46But what I did enjoy about this is when they did turn it over,
36:48they had a plan.
36:49They weren't just running headless chickens
36:51trying to score a goal straight away.
36:53They believe in each other.
36:54They believe in the system.
36:55And I think just as it builds up slowly,
36:58there's a moment.
36:59Here we see Bueno in a beautiful position.
37:01Now they can get on the front foot.
37:03Now they can create things.
37:04And that's something that a Molineux crowd can get behind.
37:07These sorts of moments of showing their team
37:09that they can build up and put some pressure on the opposition.
37:12And now, look, they've stayed in the fight for 80 minutes.
37:15As we talked about, they were getting beat early.
37:17The games were over.
37:19This is giving them an opportunity to be on the front foot
37:21with their shape, with their system
37:23and be creating trances later on
37:25when the score's nil-nil.
37:27That goes in.
37:27It's a massive three points to them.
37:29Look, it doesn't.
37:30But this is why Rob Edwards is getting around those balls.
37:32Not for the nil-nil.
37:33For the effort and the excitement that the team
37:35are doing at the moment.
37:36And like you said,
37:37the damage was done earlier in the season.
37:39But Wolves are choosing how they're going to finish this season.
37:42And that's how they've been getting on in the last four games.
37:46That draw against Manchester United has sparked
37:48this really good run of form for them.
37:51Now, if you've missed anything this weekend,
37:54Match of the Day and individual highlights
37:56of every Premier League game are available right now on iPlayer.
38:00Champions League Match of the Day returns on Wednesday night
38:03with highlights from every game.
38:05The Women's League Cup semi-finals are live on iPlayer on Wednesday night.
38:09You can choose between Manchester City-Chelsea
38:11or Arsenal against Man United from seven o'clock.
38:14And Chelsea-Arsenal in the WSL is live on BBC One
38:17next Saturday lunchtime.
38:21We are all massively influenced by our past.
38:23And the story is exceptional.
38:25To make it all the way,
38:27the odds back then in rural Egypt?
38:29Zero.
38:30Liverpool have completed the sign from a telethonist to Liverpool.
38:34The setbacks that he's faced
38:36could all have gone so differently.
38:37It's been a sad World Cup for him.
38:39And yet he managed to make it.
38:41Coming from Egypt, it's a lot of pressure.
38:43He'll forever be trying to prove people wrong.
38:46He's shown over and over again that he doesn't give up.
38:53Let's take a look now at all the goals from yesterday.
39:02Oh, what a ball that is. Bruno Fernandes has made the run.
39:05And Bruno Fernandes sidesteps on a rubber.
39:08And scores!
39:10And this time the flag stays down.
39:13Oh, no, it doesn't.
39:14Oh, no, it doesn't.
39:16That's good by Cherky.
39:18Maguire straight back into action.
39:20And Boomer with a lovely touch to Bruno Fernandes.
39:22Look at this.
39:23Three on two.
39:25Ahmad wants it.
39:26It's a bummer who gets it.
39:28And scores!
39:32Cunha.
39:33On it in.
39:34And Orgu is onto it.
39:35And makes it two.
39:39Manchester United might get a third.
39:41They ought to.
39:42It's Cunha who's in.
39:43A match there with him.
39:453-0.
39:49And in fact, it's going to stay at 2-0.
39:51Oh, Matthias Cunha.
39:53What offside.
39:54Final score.
39:55United 2.
39:56City 0.
39:58Jackson Rice.
40:00And Saka.
40:02Great save.
40:04Matt Salves with a wonderful save.
40:07Saka's had a look goal bound.
40:09And here's Eze who's just come on the pitch.
40:12Murillo with a touch.
40:13Wasn't sure where it was going.
40:16Well, hold on now.
40:17They're looking at this from Ola Aina.
40:19Off the shoulder there.
40:21Well.
40:22They've decided that that is a natural position.
40:25Bet your bottom doll and Mikel Arteta doesn't.
40:31It's poorly done by Brentford.
40:32Couldn't get it away.
40:331-0 Chelsea.
40:34Offside.
40:35Won't count.
40:37Should be a goal for me.
40:38And I think it's going to be given.
40:41It is given.
40:42And they got that right in my opinion.
40:46Oh, it's slipped away.
40:48It's cleared.
40:50But it's going to be a penalty.
40:52And Kanaka got in a right mess there.
40:57Chelsea lead by two goals to nil.
41:00And that surely is the game.
41:04The answer.
41:06And Padua.
41:08Decent cross.
41:09Orsa.
41:11Met by Metche.
41:19Gakpo.
41:22Florentino in his way.
41:24And the decision is penalty.
41:28And Shabashlai has crashed his effort against the frame of the goal.
41:33Eketike.
41:34He's got the better of Walker.
41:35And now Tuenzevi.
41:36Eketike, tremendous work.
41:39Jones is there after the ball came back off.
41:42Dubravkiewicz.
41:45An emphatic finish.
41:50Florentino.
41:51Marcus Edwards.
41:53Has equalized.
41:54And look what that goal means for Burnley.
42:01He's descended in.
42:03Roos is there.
42:04Just gets it up on it.
42:05Stab back towards goal and in.
42:07What a precise finish from Jeremy Pino.
42:13Lovely bit of play from Sunderland.
42:15Here's Mukiele.
42:17Probe will let it roll for the bay.
42:22Siddiqui.
42:23Trying to squeeze it through to Probe.
42:25And it will fall to him.
42:28And he's hurt himself in scoring that goal, Brian Probe.
42:32The punishing week gets worse for Crystal Palace.
42:39Somerville up against Poro.
42:42Somerville still going.
42:43It's opened up for Somerville.
42:45West Ham in front.
42:50Toro's first time ball in is vicious.
42:52Oh, one-one.
42:53A thumping header from Christian Romero.
42:59Toro's struggling.
43:01Could go anywhere.
43:02It's in.
43:03West Ham have won it.
43:05It's Callum Wilson.
43:07And Thomas Frank has to turn and face the music now.
43:12And it is being very widely reported that Thomas Frank is under significant internal scrutiny.
43:19The club considering calling time.
43:21He's been there for seven months.
43:22So a short space of time for him to kind of put his plan into action.
43:28But the reaction from the Tottenham fans was you're getting sacked in the morning.
43:33It was his own fans singing that at him.
43:35Which feels like a position that's very difficult to come back from, Ellen.
43:39Yeah, it's a really difficult position and really toxic to be in that environment.
43:44And, you know, for the fans, they've watched Tottenham lose six Premier League games at home.
43:49Two back-to-back.
43:50They've had two wins at home.
43:53They're not feeling what they obviously want to get from Thomas Frank.
43:56The performances, the wins, the enthusiasm, the endeavor.
43:59Yes, they've got injury woes as well.
44:01So it's a really tricky one.
44:03You know, what is going to happen?
44:05What are the board thinking?
44:06Is he able to have a little bit of time to get those players back?
44:10Are they going in the market again?
44:11They've lost Brennan Johnson.
44:14So it's going to be really interesting.
44:16Obviously got Connor Gallagher now.
44:17So it's a really hard one because, you know, the players will feel that energy as well in the stadium.
44:23You want that to be a fortress somewhere that you would love playing, that you enjoy playing.
44:28You want that enthusiasm from your fans.
44:30But when you hear that toxic environment, it's a really tricky one to play in, I can imagine as well.
44:35Yeah, difficult for the players to put on the performances that the fans want.
44:39And yet the fans are completely entitled to show their frustration with results and performances.
44:45Yeah, of course they are.
44:46You know, it felt like a difficult season last season, no doubt about it.
44:50But at the end of the day, won a European trophy, got themselves in the Champions League.
44:53They took on, you know, Thomas Frank there.
44:56Well, it was one of the top managers.
44:57It was a great coup to bring him into the club.
44:59It felt like stability was coming.
45:01It felt like a way of playing and something they could really get behind.
45:04And it's just not happening at the moment.
45:05And the results haven't followed.
45:05It's just the performances haven't been followed either from the players, from the management.
45:10Obviously, the crowd is starting to get really uncomfortable to lose six games at home in a Premier League season.
45:15It's going to get messy, especially at a team like Tottenham.
45:19Obviously, if results and performances improved, then he would end up keeping his job.
45:24But from here, can you see that happening?
45:27Can you see a way back for Thomas Frank in terms of that relationship with the fans?
45:32I've still got my players head on and my team players head on.
45:36And there's always a chance, right?
45:37There's those meetings that you can have.
45:39There's big conversations going on in that dressing room as a group, as a players, as a staff.
45:45They've all got to get on the same page because it's the only way out of these sorts of situations.
45:49The other group of fans who booed off there, whether it was the players or the manager,
45:55but there were boos at the final were Crystal Palace.
45:58And this has gone from the team that won the FA Cup last season, Oliver Glasner,
46:03widely lauded as one of the best managers in the Premier League.
46:07And yet he's now said that he feels abandoned at the club, that he feels he has no support from
46:12leadership at the club.
46:14And this feels like a pattern. It has been a pattern this season.
46:17We saw it with Mareska, we saw it with Amerim, that they come out and they talk very openly about
46:22issues that they've been having.
46:24Almost it feels as though they're trying to force the club's hand.
46:28Yeah, but he seems like a very honest man.
46:30He interviews very honestly all the time.
46:32You know, it was absolutely magical, wasn't it?
46:35Was it May to beat Manchester City?
46:36They felt so united as a club, had a chance to kick on.
46:40Earned a UEFA Europa League place, which they didn't get for whatever reason.
46:44It just feels like the divisions are getting really messy.
46:47The kind of Gahy situation in the summer, that didn't work out how they wanted it to work out and
46:52didn't work out how Glasner wanted it.
46:53He just wanted it to be clear. He looks like a very, he just wants factual information that he can
46:58work with and he's just not getting it.
47:00And he looks like he's getting really frustrated and he's starting to make himself known.
47:04And while he's talking about the owners and he's talking about the lack of support, the club are reportedly hoping
47:11to keep him until the end of the season.
47:14These feel like closed door conversations that we're privy to, that there seems to be a bit of jostling here,
47:19Ellen.
47:19Yeah, it does. And it feels interesting because he said that he obviously spoke to Steve Parrish about it in
47:24October, that he wanted to leave and seek different opportunities.
47:27And, you know, wonder when the players found out. Obviously, Brennan Johnson is coming in.
47:32You know, would he have come if he had known the manager was leaving at the end of the season?
47:35And it's interesting, all the drama. We're obviously very privy to it now.
47:39But yeah, it's interesting to see whether they will now keep him at the end of the season.
47:43Now he's been about a bit more outspoken. Obviously, Mark Gay, he is left leaving as well.
47:47So it'll be really interesting what happens.
47:49Yeah. And then the promises that are going to be made if they want to be able to keep hold
47:53of him.
47:54And he's already said that he won't be staying past the end of the season.
47:57And we're not sure when that was communicated to the to the players, because we know he said he told
48:02the owners that as far back as October.
48:05So we'll keep an eye on both of those situations.
48:07We're going to take a look now, though, at the Premier League table.
48:11And for the first time in 18 years, all of the top six have failed to win across a weekend
48:18set of fixtures.
48:19Everton, though, have moved up into the top half after they won their 10th away game since David Moyes return.
48:25That mini revival for Wolves continues six points in four matches, but they are still 14 from safety.
48:33Thank you very much to Joe and Ellen as the chasing pack failed to close the gap on Arsenal and
48:38Villa come unstuck against the Toffees.
48:47And we'll be right back.
