00:00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:51Two wins in their last six league games.
00:00:55Can Arsenal hold their nerve in the title race?
00:00:58Here's Rice.
00:01:00And Saka gets the opener.
00:01:02Perfect start for Arsenal.
00:01:04They just can't get out at the moment, Wolves.
00:01:07That's a lovely ball, Hincafie.
00:01:10Doubles Arsenal's advantage.
00:01:13It's Hugo Bueno.
00:01:14What a goal!
00:01:15The Wolves have just made this very interesting.
00:01:19Nervey moments for the Gunners.
00:01:22And Riot got himself in a medal!
00:01:25And it's in!
00:01:26Another agonising twist in the title race for Arsenal.
00:01:31Is it happening all over again?
00:01:36Yes, Arsenal pegged back during the week, so it's over to others tonight with five games
00:01:42on the way.
00:01:43One of the brightest footballers of his generation is alongside Wayne.
00:01:47So, he's written the script as Mica and on the running order, so we'll start by seeing
00:01:52if Manchester City could close the gap on Arsenal to two points with victory over Newcastle.
00:01:57Commentary from Guy Mowbray.
00:02:01After three wins in a row, trips away from Tyneside should no longer be worried about by Newcastle fans.
00:02:08But then there's this one.
00:02:10They've lost away to Manchester City 16 times in a row in the Premier League.
00:02:15In league terms, Pep Guardiola has made one change to his City team for today.
00:02:20With Omar Mahmouche starting instead of Phil Foden.
00:02:23Mahmouche scored twice when Newcastle were last here just two and a half weeks ago in the League Cup.
00:02:28And Eddie Howe has made one change to his team as well.
00:02:32That's from Wednesday's club record European win.
00:02:356-1 away to Carabac.
00:02:37Jacob Ramsey takes Harvey Barnes place in the Newcastle starting line-up.
00:02:42A win tonight and at least four tonight.
00:02:45Manchester City will be in touching distance of Arsenal.
00:02:50Mahmouche.
00:02:51O'Reilly to his right.
00:02:54Now to his left.
00:02:55And found by Omar Mahmouche.
00:02:57O'Reilly!
00:02:59What a wonderfully clean strike.
00:03:02From a wonderfully gifted player.
00:03:07It's his tenth goal for Manchester City.
00:03:10And they're starting to come more regularly.
00:03:13Now that he's getting regular game time in his favoured midfield role.
00:03:18Nick Pope will be very, very unhappy about the way that it went in past him.
00:03:24It's a lovely shot from O'Reilly but Pope having got a glove to it will think that he quite
00:03:30possibly maybe even probably should have tipped it around the post.
00:03:34Pep was firing it in himself.
00:03:39Eddie Howe's record in the Premier League against Manchester City.
00:03:421-1.
00:03:43Drawn two.
00:03:43Lost 16.
00:03:44Lost all ten with Bournemouth.
00:03:47One win in nine with Newcastle.
00:03:50Reuben Diaz.
00:03:53Bounces back here for Voltemada.
00:03:55Looking to set Gordon running.
00:03:56Gahey's going to have to run quickly.
00:03:58Gordon takes it really confidently.
00:04:01Difficult angle but a good use of the brakes.
00:04:03And Donnarumma has to save.
00:04:06Great running and intelligent play too from Anthony Gordon.
00:04:11Very quickly assessing what was on, what wouldn't be on and trying to make it work the best way he
00:04:16could.
00:04:18Only Kylian Mbappe has got more Champions League goals this season than Anthony Gordon.
00:04:26Now Newcastle had the chance to break.
00:04:28It's Willock.
00:04:29Being grabbed at by Marmouche.
00:04:32Advantage with Newcastle and Ilanga.
00:04:35Ilanga.
00:04:36Goes down.
00:04:38No suggestion of any sort of foul but it will be a Newcastle corner.
00:04:41I think it's reasonably clear what Ilanga's instructions have been.
00:04:45When he gets the ball he's been very quick to run at the full backs in front of him every
00:04:49time.
00:04:52Krippi, that's a good ball.
00:04:54And Donnarumma put a hand up and got something on it.
00:04:59There's Voltemada jumping, it's Malik Chao at the back.
00:05:02And it was just tipped over the top by Donnarumma.
00:05:06Malik Chao a real threat from any sort of balls into the box.
00:05:10To Nani.
00:05:12It's not away yet, here's Hall.
00:05:14Hall shot through the crowd and all the way in.
00:05:18Newcastle are level.
00:05:20Must have been a touch off somebody on its way through.
00:05:23But it is Lewis Hall who will celebrate the goal.
00:05:28Hall shot, did it come off Rodri?
00:05:31Oh, it takes at least two touches.
00:05:33I think it's Ait Nuri and then Ruben Diaz.
00:05:36No chance for Donnarumma.
00:05:38Was anybody offside in his line of vision?
00:05:42Don't think that's going to be a factor.
00:05:44And it will be Lewis Hall's goal.
00:05:46And there's something about Manchester he likes.
00:05:48Three goals for Newcastle United.
00:05:50Two have come at Old Trafford and now one at the Etihad.
00:05:55Oh dear, it's given time to think.
00:05:58Semenyo.
00:06:00Away from Valtomada.
00:06:02Lovely ball for Haaland.
00:06:04Haaland's delivery.
00:06:05O'Reilly's there!
00:06:072-1 City.
00:06:09Two for Nico O'Reilly.
00:06:13Normally you might think of that happening the other way around.
00:06:16Ball in for Haaland to head home.
00:06:20But he doesn't just score, he makes them as well.
00:06:22And it's Nico O'Reilly who's in great scoring form just at the moment.
00:06:29Trippier couldn't get into forward gear quickly enough to beat O'Reilly to the ball.
00:06:34O'Reilly wanted it.
00:06:37Super-headed finish.
00:06:38Newcastle weren't level for long.
00:06:41Manchester City 2, Newcastle 1.
00:06:45Rodri.
00:06:46O'Reilly.
00:06:51Per stays in front of Haaland crucially.
00:06:54Valtomada gets the ball away to Gordon.
00:06:56Gordon will certainly back himself against Ruben Diaz who brings him down.
00:07:00And Diaz, I think, will be getting a booking now.
00:07:03Knew he was in trouble the minute the race was on.
00:07:08Forcing Gordon to take the long way round.
00:07:11He was just intent on making sure there was no way round.
00:07:15To Nali.
00:07:16To take the Newcastle free kick.
00:07:22Put into a good area for Byrne to attack.
00:07:25And for Dan Byrne to score.
00:07:28But the flag is now raised.
00:07:34Eddie Howe with more of a grimace than a smile.
00:07:37He's seen it already.
00:07:38And I think he's accepted it.
00:07:40Just offside that Byrne.
00:07:45The biggest frustration that he has there is that when the jostling started before Tenali put it in, he was
00:07:52kind of forced off balance.
00:07:53Watch this.
00:07:55Ruben Diaz there with a hold, then a push.
00:07:58And that is actually what propelled Byrne into being offside.
00:08:04Radiola, along with many thousands of others inside this place, will want to see another home goal as soon as
00:08:11it could possibly happen to get a bit of breathing space.
00:08:15Semenyo.
00:08:16Powering away from Ramsey.
00:08:19Semenyo!
00:08:20Too much adrenaline coursing through his body.
00:08:25Look for a time as though we were going to see one of the special solo goals.
00:08:31Might have been a better bet to feed Marmouche, you know.
00:08:36Non-stop Newcastle noise.
00:08:39Some of the City chants over the last few minutes have been of the come on City nature.
00:08:43You usually hear that when the home crowd sense their team needs a bit of a lift.
00:08:47Might be the case.
00:08:53Harland, oh brilliant.
00:08:56Finds Shirky, he finds Semenyo, who only finds Nick Pope.
00:09:03Came off Lewis Hall's boot, took a lot of sting off the shot.
00:09:07Don't think it was Semenyo's finest anyway.
00:09:18Kaye, to Cherky.
00:09:20Ait Nuri was flying down the left all the time.
00:09:24Harland to his right and Ait Nuri thought about what to do next for far too long.
00:09:30Taken from him by Byrne.
00:09:32I think he wanted to do it by himself but he was also mindful of Harland's position.
00:09:37He didn't do either.
00:09:39He has a look towards goal, he never looks towards Harland and then he gets in a bit of a
00:09:43muddle.
00:09:44For his part, Dan Byrne did brilliantly.
00:09:55But Guardiola thinks that had to be.
00:10:01Free kick in the other half of the field.
00:10:03It was Ait Nuri involved again.
00:10:05A troublesome minute for him.
00:10:07Barely put a foot wrong before the last minute.
00:10:10He's given Newcastle a free kick and Byrne is up there for it, which means Harland is back there for
00:10:15it.
00:10:17Jacob Murphy to whip it in for Newcastle.
00:10:20He has done, he did exactly that but nobody able to put the finish on it.
00:10:29We are into the four minutes of added time.
00:10:35Gay.
00:10:38Steps past Murphy.
00:10:41Up to Harland.
00:10:42Harland takes it, takes on Byrne and Pope makes the save.
00:10:46Now it's Foden. Oh, what a touch!
00:10:48And a good save by Pope.
00:10:56City stepping it up towards the finish.
00:11:06What a takedown that was from Phil Foden.
00:11:08He thought that was his long run without a goal over but Nick Pope read what he was going to
00:11:13do with it next.
00:11:21Trippier does the launching.
00:11:22Down for Harvey Barnes!
00:11:24Was that saved?
00:11:26It was!
00:11:28Brilliantly by Donnarumma.
00:11:30That may have been sneaking in.
00:11:32Not the first time he's done that at the end of a game for City this season.
00:11:38Nick Pope goes forward for the corner.
00:11:40Well, this is it.
00:11:42This is Newcastle's moment.
00:11:45As Tonali puts in the swinger.
00:11:47Pope goes for it.
00:11:48Harland heads away.
00:11:51Here's Murphy.
00:11:54Has to go backwards to come forwards.
00:11:57Trippier.
00:11:58City fans want the whistle.
00:12:00Nick Pope is still up there for Newcastle.
00:12:03Bernardo Silva with the touch away.
00:12:06And that will do it!
00:12:08The noise at the end.
00:12:10The smiles and the hugs.
00:12:13The leaping on one another by the players tells you just what that means for Manchester City.
00:12:19Early Harland tells you just what sort of effort they've had to put in to make sure of their customary
00:12:26home win against Newcastle.
00:12:28And with it, they move two points behind Arsenal.
00:12:32Both having played 27 games.
00:12:36All eyes on North London tomorrow.
00:12:39Tonight, it's finished Manchester City 2, Newcastle United 1.
00:12:47Pep, tell us the best thing, the most pleasing thing about that win today.
00:12:52At the opening and how tough it is.
00:12:54We saw today until the end of the season, this is the level you have to play.
00:12:59So, we missed the last pass.
00:13:01We then found Erling.
00:13:02Erling today was...
00:13:04Without him it would not be possible.
00:13:06Always...
00:13:08We can...
00:13:09Expecting the goals and everything.
00:13:11But today, without him it would not be possible.
00:13:13So, we've been really good.
00:13:14All the guys.
00:13:16Considering everything that we've put into the last few weeks,
00:13:18it was a big effort.
00:13:19Physically, mentally.
00:13:20It was a good performance.
00:13:22It wasn't good enough.
00:13:23And, er...
00:13:24Yeah, Manchester City make it very difficult for you.
00:13:27But I thought we went toe-to-toe with them.
00:13:28I thought we were going strong at the end and can't fault the players.
00:13:31Very big win.
00:13:32We needed the win.
00:13:33Yeah, that's our aim every game now.
00:13:35Just three points, three points, three points.
00:13:38So, yeah, buzzing with today.
00:13:39The celebrations at the end.
00:13:41All the players, all the fans.
00:13:42The noise was right up there today.
00:13:45Does that tell you just the spirit?
00:13:46Yeah, the best vibe.
00:13:47So, we have five games left and we need...
00:13:50We need that vibe for our people.
00:13:51So, you know, they know that the guys can play good or bad
00:13:55but never disappointed for the effort.
00:13:57And today was the day, really, really day that we felt connected.
00:14:00We need them with us, us with them.
00:14:02And we need it.
00:14:04And...
00:14:04And now it's coming the best part of the season.
00:14:06So, it's one more week.
00:14:08The February is gone.
00:14:09The start of tomorrow is going to start the Champions League again.
00:14:12And the NFA Cubs, you know.
00:14:13And we know that every single game will be quite similar like today.
00:14:16So, we have to prepare and do it.
00:14:19Okay, let's start with that man you can see there, Nico O'Reilly.
00:14:22Who is fast becoming, you would have thought.
00:14:25One of the first names on the City team sheet, isn't he?
00:14:27Yeah, I think so.
00:14:28Because of his versatility, his energy.
00:14:31Just 20 years of age, what he's doing is just remarkable.
00:14:34And I love watching him play.
00:14:35Not only that, because of his football intelligence.
00:14:38When someone's played left back for the season.
00:14:40And now he's almost playing in that number 10 role.
00:14:44But you see here, he's a furthest man forward.
00:14:47And when you're in these positions here.
00:14:49And Mamouche was excellent today as well.
00:14:50You've got to make these driving runs here.
00:14:52Because these are the rewards that you get.
00:14:54Not only that, his football intelligence.
00:14:57We talk about pocket of space.
00:14:58This is absolutely brilliant.
00:15:00As a defender there.
00:15:01I don't know whether to go, to step.
00:15:04And then you've got Mamouche pushing it one way.
00:15:06And Haaland away.
00:15:07You've been in that position so many times.
00:15:09What's it like as a forward?
00:15:10I think for someone so young as he is.
00:15:13Only 20 years of age.
00:15:14To play that position.
00:15:15And he hasn't done it regular this season.
00:15:18To stand still is sometimes the hardest thing to do in football.
00:15:21And he's patient.
00:15:22He's waiting.
00:15:23He's stalking.
00:15:24He's here in Haaland.
00:15:25Make a great run.
00:15:26And then now.
00:15:27He gets in the box.
00:15:28He gets to the back post.
00:15:29Targets.
00:15:30And it's a fantastic ball.
00:15:32And a great header.
00:15:32And it carried on.
00:15:34Again.
00:15:34I thought Haaland was outstanding.
00:15:36And Wayne's going to have a little look at.
00:15:37But it was his willingness to run.
00:15:39And it's not only that.
00:15:40It's the timing of the runs as well.
00:15:42I mentioned Mamouche with his running in behind.
00:15:44And he could have a hat trick.
00:15:46In the first half.
00:15:47A good little ball across.
00:15:49And he just can't get the right connection.
00:15:51And to see someone coming through the academy.
00:15:53Getting this opportunity.
00:15:55And taking it.
00:15:56You know.
00:15:56He's an England international now.
00:15:58Who can play midfield.
00:16:00And left back.
00:16:01So that versatility is going to be good.
00:16:03For the country as well.
00:16:04This time.
00:16:05He's playing to Haaland.
00:16:06And I just thought his all round game today.
00:16:09Was excellent.
00:16:10For all the normally players in these positions.
00:16:12Can you receive the ball on the half turn?
00:16:15Yes.
00:16:15And then.
00:16:16Can you make that forward run.
00:16:18To open up space for other players.
00:16:20To get on the ball.
00:16:21And I just thought it was a perfect performance.
00:16:24For a player who's so young.
00:16:25Who's having to adapt.
00:16:27From left back.
00:16:27And now playing in the number 10.
00:16:29Do you give.
00:16:30Both give credit to the academy.
00:16:32There.
00:16:32And how they brought him through.
00:16:33That he has.
00:16:34I mean you obviously give credit to the player himself.
00:16:36But that versatility.
00:16:37How he's been schooled.
00:16:39Yeah.
00:16:39I think you give it to the academy.
00:16:40But also to Pep as well.
00:16:41Because.
00:16:42I think Pep's obviously seen something in him.
00:16:44I think he played midfield.
00:16:45In the academy.
00:16:45He's moved into left back.
00:16:46Now he's put him into a number 10 position.
00:16:49Pep's seen him every day in training.
00:16:50And he's realised.
00:16:51That he can actually play all over the pitch.
00:16:52But the academy have obviously gotten to that level.
00:16:54I mean you played as a 10.
00:16:56Could you have played left back?
00:16:58Probably.
00:17:00Let me try this.
00:17:01You played full back.
00:17:02Could you have played 10?
00:17:03Definitely not.
00:17:07Erling Haaland.
00:17:08Today.
00:17:08Looked like.
00:17:09A complete centre forward.
00:17:10Didn't he?
00:17:11I thought he was excellent.
00:17:12I thought he was.
00:17:13He was all over the pitch.
00:17:14He has a great battle with Dan Byrne.
00:17:16He didn't get his goal.
00:17:17But.
00:17:17We spoke about this a few weeks ago.
00:17:19He's.
00:17:19He's adapting his game slightly.
00:17:21And he's become more of a.
00:17:22All round centre forward.
00:17:24Rather than just a goal scorer.
00:17:25And you see here.
00:17:26With Dan Byrne.
00:17:27The start of the battle really.
00:17:28Dan Byrne gets an early yellow card.
00:17:30But again.
00:17:30He had this little pocket of space.
00:17:32It's a fantastic run.
00:17:33With his weak foot.
00:17:35Great crossing to the penalty area.
00:17:36And obviously.
00:17:36O'Reilly gets a.
00:17:37A great header.
00:17:38But.
00:17:39Newcastle were brave as well.
00:17:40Leaving Dan Byrne.
00:17:411v1.
00:17:41Against Aylen Haaland.
00:17:43But again.
00:17:43He shows his strength.
00:17:44Great centre forward play.
00:17:46Holds Dan Byrne off.
00:17:47Brings the ball down.
00:17:49And nice little lay off.
00:17:50Gets City on the attacker game.
00:17:52Now we see him here.
00:17:53Coming into the number 10 position.
00:17:54Picking the ball up.
00:17:56Good feet.
00:17:56Good feet work.
00:17:57Driving at players.
00:17:59And then unlucky with his weak foot.
00:18:01And then here.
00:18:02This is a clever little run.
00:18:03You see him on the.
00:18:04Back of the defender.
00:18:04He just gets himself.
00:18:06Back on side.
00:18:07Makes a great run.
00:18:08And now this is where you don't want to see Aylen Haaland.
00:18:10If you're a defender.
00:18:11He gets the ball.
00:18:12He's driving at you.
00:18:14Newcastle do well.
00:18:15Get defenders back.
00:18:15But then he comes out of there.
00:18:16Lays the ball off.
00:18:17And he's becoming more of a.
00:18:19A creator.
00:18:20Rather than just that goal.
00:18:21Player who scores goals.
00:18:22And then defensively.
00:18:23When you need him.
00:18:24Back in his own box.
00:18:25Strong.
00:18:26Powerful.
00:18:26Great header.
00:18:27Out of the penalty area.
00:18:28Here.
00:18:28He actually stayed in the back line for a long time.
00:18:31At times.
00:18:32But here again.
00:18:33Cover.
00:18:34Not letting the Newcastle players get through.
00:18:37Really unlucky.
00:18:38This is where you want to see him.
00:18:39On the shoulder.
00:18:40It's a good save.
00:18:41Unlucky not to get his goal.
00:18:42Which is all round performance deserved.
00:18:45And then last minute.
00:18:47Last kick of the game.
00:18:48Ball comes into the penalty area.
00:18:50He's there.
00:18:52Great header out.
00:18:53But his performance.
00:18:54I thought.
00:18:55Was outstanding.
00:18:56Today.
00:18:56And you see his heat map.
00:18:57That's a real contrast.
00:18:58To some.
00:18:59What we've seen.
00:19:00At times.
00:19:01During this city career.
00:19:02Normally with Earl Harland.
00:19:03You see his heat map.
00:19:04And it'd be.
00:19:05Central.
00:19:06Just in the.
00:19:06Round the penalty area.
00:19:07But here you see.
00:19:08He's everywhere.
00:19:09And he's favored that right hand side.
00:19:10So I think.
00:19:12He's finding.
00:19:13New things in his game.
00:19:14Which I think.
00:19:15That's a scary thought.
00:19:16Well.
00:19:16It's also a scary thought.
00:19:18Because he has so many other people.
00:19:19That can then play off him.
00:19:20Yeah.
00:19:20Exactly that.
00:19:21I think.
00:19:22He became.
00:19:23A little bit predictable.
00:19:24Harland.
00:19:25So.
00:19:25When I was watching his game.
00:19:26As a defender.
00:19:27I'm thinking.
00:19:27I know where he wants to run.
00:19:29I know where he wants to run.
00:19:29When the balls are one side.
00:19:30He's always going to go to the back post.
00:19:32But what Wayne showed there.
00:19:33He's got variety in his game now.
00:19:35And that's difficult.
00:19:36Because.
00:19:36A man who can score that many goals.
00:19:38And now.
00:19:39Introducing the other side of his game.
00:19:40He's going to be unstoppable.
00:19:41You've both.
00:19:42You've both been entitled racers.
00:19:44So what do you read into the reactions at the end.
00:19:48Tonight.
00:19:48I think.
00:19:50You just know you're in with a fight now.
00:19:53There's always defining moments in the season.
00:19:56And I think Man City's was against Liverpool away.
00:19:59When they come back.
00:20:00After that Sabozlai free kick.
00:20:02And then it just gives you that little bit of impetus.
00:20:05That momentum to say.
00:20:06We're in this.
00:20:07And now obviously.
00:20:08The Northland Derby is tomorrow.
00:20:10We don't know what's going to happen there.
00:20:12But as long as.
00:20:13I always said.
00:20:13As long as Man City can stay within.
00:20:15Two or three points in that game in April.
00:20:17At home at the Etihad.
00:20:19Then.
00:20:20They're in with a chance.
00:20:21And that's all you can.
00:20:22Expect at this part of the season.
00:20:23That's man games as well from Pep.
00:20:24Without actually saying anything.
00:20:25That's Pep.
00:20:26Showing Arsenal.
00:20:27They're up for this fight.
00:20:28And they're ready to.
00:20:29To take this fight on with Arsenal.
00:20:30And.
00:20:30Arsenal will be sitting there.
00:20:31Because that was a tough game today.
00:20:32Against Newcastle.
00:20:33But it's a fantastic win.
00:20:35The other thing as well.
00:20:36Is since the turn of the year.
00:20:38When they've been a full round of Premier League fixtures.
00:20:40If Arsenal have had to go after Manchester City.
00:20:43They haven't won.
00:20:44Yet.
00:20:45So it cranked.
00:20:46I know they played midweek.
00:20:47But that was a standalone game for Arsenal.
00:20:49So that cranks it up even more.
00:20:51Doesn't it?
00:20:51Yeah.
00:20:52It does.
00:20:52And obviously.
00:20:52Having a derby game against Tottenham.
00:20:54It's never an easy game.
00:20:55Tottenham with a new manager in.
00:20:57So.
00:20:57Yeah.
00:20:58They're going to be looking.
00:20:59I think.
00:20:59You know.
00:20:59City are coming.
00:21:00They know.
00:21:01It's in City's hands.
00:21:02So.
00:21:02Arsenal.
00:21:03The pressure's back on Arsenal tomorrow.
00:21:04North London derby.
00:21:06So.
00:21:06Yeah.
00:21:06Let's see what they've got.
00:21:07Right.
00:21:08Chelsea are unbeaten in the Premier League under Liam Rossini.
00:21:11Burnley travelled to Stamford Bridge on the back of an FA Cup defeat to Mansfield Town.
00:21:16Steve Wilson's your commentator.
00:21:18Scott Parker returns to Stamford Bridge where he had one season as a player fighting for
00:21:24his job.
00:21:25That dismal Cup defeat arguably more than undoing the good work of their win at Crystal Palace.
00:21:31Chelsea haven't actually beaten Burnley in either of their last two meetings here.
00:21:35Three changes today from the league draw with Leeds.
00:21:39Neto, James and Fofana come in.
00:21:41Esteval's out with a tight hamstring.
00:21:43Burnley made no changes from Salahs Park when they came from two down to win.
00:21:48Seven of the eight Premier League points they have ever won against Chelsea have been taken
00:21:53here at Stamford Bridge.
00:21:57It's Chelsea defending the shed end against a Burnley side who surely know where and how
00:22:05this season is going to end.
00:22:08It's a lovely ball.
00:22:10Caicedo for Pedro Neto.
00:22:12João Pedro.
00:22:141-0.
00:22:16Well that didn't take long.
00:22:18Just over three minutes played.
00:22:21João Pedro puts Chelsea in front.
00:22:24Come on!
00:22:28Caicedo played a brilliant spearing ball here.
00:22:31into the run of Pedro Neto who had a little glance up.
00:22:38And the ball is clearly over the line despite Dubravka's best efforts.
00:22:46Chelsea 1, Burnley 0.
00:22:55Hannibal.
00:22:56Hannibal with a good run.
00:22:57And he's fouled.
00:22:59Fofana.
00:22:59Yellow card I would thought.
00:23:01Yes it is.
00:23:02Fofana booked.
00:23:07It's a good job Chelsea had scored because they haven't done a lot else.
00:23:12Laurent being chased by Pedro Neto.
00:23:15He's nudged him has he?
00:23:16Yes he has.
00:23:19I can't help but feel that Chelsea are asking for trouble here.
00:23:25Five inside the Chelsea area.
00:23:27It's played back to Kyle Walker.
00:23:29Walker with a little bit of backspin on it.
00:23:33Joe Worrell's header is cleared away comfortably.
00:23:37And there's an error.
00:23:38And here's trouble for Burnley.
00:23:40Cole Palmer!
00:23:41And it's a very comfortable Dubravka save.
00:23:46I feared for Kyle Walker there.
00:23:48I thought he was going to try and grab Cole Palmer and pull him back.
00:23:52Which would have been a certain red card.
00:23:55And Kyle Walker thought better of it.
00:23:59Here's Edwards.
00:24:04Anthony and put behind by Rhys James with Zean Fleming sniffing around.
00:24:10Anthony's stretch couldn't quite make contact with it.
00:24:13The corner kick is played short.
00:24:15Anthony delivers.
00:24:18Hannibal.
00:24:19That's a good hit.
00:24:20Sanchez is there.
00:24:23And it's a straightforward save for Robert Sanchez at the end of it.
00:24:27But it's a good hit by Hannibal.
00:24:30It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in the dressing room at half time.
00:24:34They've got a great start.
00:24:35And it feels frankly as though they've been going through the motions ever since.
00:24:44Burnley will just sit there, very happy to be 1-0 down.
00:24:47And think that at some point in this second half, they may get a set piece or something that they
00:24:53can turn to their advantage.
00:24:54And make Chelsea pay for not finding a second goal.
00:25:00And Bashir Humphries has given the ball away here.
00:25:03Pounced on by João Pedro.
00:25:05And here's Palmer.
00:25:06Palmer.
00:25:08Well, Palmer is down.
00:25:11And Lewis Smith says this is a goal kick.
00:25:16The video assistant referee has looked at this.
00:25:20And confirmed the decision of on-pitch referee Lewis Smith.
00:25:27Here is Pedro Neto.
00:25:32Whipping the cross across Dubravka.
00:25:36And put behind by Lucas Pires for a Chelsea corner.
00:25:42Pedro Neto with this corner kick.
00:25:44And Dubravka just seemed to lose his footing a little bit as it came in.
00:25:50And they've got away with this Burnley.
00:25:52They might not have done.
00:25:52Just look at the Burnley keeper here, Dubravka.
00:25:59James Ward-Prowse for Lucas Pires.
00:26:04Spotted Cole Palmer just in time.
00:26:06Worrell had to stretch.
00:26:08And the referee's actually given Burnley a free kick for an earlier challenge on Ward-Prowse.
00:26:13And it's a red card for Fofana.
00:26:16It's a second yellow for the Chelsea defender.
00:26:20And he's stretched into a challenge on James Ward-Prowse here.
00:26:25And that is a second yellow for Fofana.
00:26:30And that could be a bit of a game changer.
00:26:41Humphreys.
00:26:42Fleming trying to run in behind.
00:26:45Did Tosin push him over?
00:26:46Fleming thought so.
00:26:50There are no other Chelsea defenders between them and Robert Sanchez.
00:26:57To say it's not a foul is surprising.
00:27:08Come on, Chelsea!
00:27:10Edwards.
00:27:13Free kick.
00:27:15And this is what Burnley will want, a set-piece within striking distance of Chelsea's goal.
00:27:25Set-pieces his speciality.
00:27:27In it goes!
00:27:28And over the top!
00:27:29Just!
00:27:30Just over the top from Ashley Barnes.
00:27:33It wouldn't have counted.
00:27:34Offside in the middle.
00:27:38Yeah, he is offside.
00:27:39I mean, Burnley might have argued he was only offside because he was pushed offside.
00:27:46Ward-Prowse.
00:27:49Chowna.
00:27:50Brun Larsson.
00:27:52Corner.
00:27:56Just exactly what Burnley want.
00:28:01Real pressure on Chelsea here.
00:28:04In it goes from Ward-Prowse!
00:28:06Fleming in!
00:28:071-1!
00:28:10Great header from Fleming.
00:28:13And Chelsea really only have themselves to blame.
00:28:17You know Ward-Prowse will deliver with quality.
00:28:21Yes, sir!
00:28:22And you know Fleming is great in the air.
00:28:24It's such a deft header.
00:28:27And Burnley are level.
00:28:31Well, there are still about 90 seconds of added time to play.
00:28:36Burnley, who came from 2-0 down to win in South London
00:28:39against Crystal Palace in their last Premier League game.
00:28:43Are they going to do it in West London?
00:28:45It's an opportunity for Edwards!
00:28:47Goodness me, what a chance!
00:28:49It's going to be a corner to Burnley.
00:28:52Didn't really get the shot off quickly enough, allowing Tosin to close it down.
00:28:58But here we go again with another Ward-Prowse corner kick from the right-hand side.
00:29:05In goes the corner kick.
00:29:06Oh, go the heads!
00:29:07And it's over the top!
00:29:09And that was so close!
00:29:13Brun Larsson, the opportunity to win the game for Burnley, flashes over the Sanchez crossbar.
00:29:23Liam De Lapp for Chelsea, finding Enzo Fernandes to Hato.
00:29:31Hato's ball.
00:29:33Little touch off, De Lapp!
00:29:34Oh dear!
00:29:36Miles off target.
00:29:38The final whistle goes and Chelsea have dropped yet more points from a winning position.
00:29:45It finishes Chelsea one, Burnley one.
00:29:49The best teams put the opposition to bed.
00:29:53The best teams are ruthless when they have the upper-hand in games.
00:29:57And if you're not ruthless, then what you have to do is make sure you keep a clean sheet.
00:30:01It's not enough clean sheets.
00:30:02And that's something we need to address for us to really maximise the potential of this club.
00:30:07Overall today, I can't be nothing but proud of the team.
00:30:10Brilliant result for us.
00:30:12And I think overall our general performance day was first class.
00:30:15Straight off the training ground in terms of how we free up that space.
00:30:19And obviously freed up Flem.
00:30:20It's a brilliant header.
00:30:21First class set play, you know, it's on the money every time with James.
00:30:25The situation is what it is.
00:30:26I think we've got 11 games left.
00:30:28It's not over and it's not over till it's over.
00:30:31And even though the gap is big, as long as it's possible, we go for this, I don't know,
00:30:38for this hopefully beautiful football story that everyone definitely in Burnley is going to remember.
00:30:44A good point for Burnley.
00:30:47Chelsea having real problems at Stamford Bridge this season.
00:30:50You can see the number of points there.
00:30:51They've dropped from winning positions.
00:30:5317.
00:30:53That's the whole season so far.
00:30:56Liam Rossini quite critical in our interviews.
00:30:58He was even more critical in his Sky interview, Micah.
00:31:01He said their defending was unacceptable.
00:31:04They didn't do enough basic values of defending set pieces.
00:31:08And there were players on the pitch who didn't do their jobs.
00:31:11Yeah, I think it's fair.
00:31:12It's hard.
00:31:13Yeah, it was.
00:31:15It was harsh.
00:31:16But it was truthful because on corners, it wasn't great at all.
00:31:22And the set up here, Chelsea have actually got ten versus five because Burnley leave three just on the edge
00:31:30of the box.
00:31:31So Warrell and Fleming, who were outstanding for Burnley, but James and Caicedo are supposed to be tracking their runs
00:31:39or at least blocking.
00:31:41All it takes is one simple movement.
00:31:44Now, there's a space there to go and attack the ball.
00:31:49That is too easy.
00:31:50That's after seven minutes in the game.
00:31:52And they got away with it.
00:31:53Ugoccu with the follow-up there.
00:31:56So here's a goal here.
00:31:58You see, we've got in their circle saying, no, don't go short to Ugoccu.
00:32:04Get it in the box.
00:32:06Chelsea are now down to ten men, but they still have the advantage nine versus five because the Burnley set
00:32:13up again outside.
00:32:14There's Fleming and there is Warrell.
00:32:17This time it's Santos and Caicedo.
00:32:19If you're not as strong and physical as someone, can you get a blocking?
00:32:24Can you stop the run?
00:32:25It only takes one movement to go round the back and here is where they concede the goal.
00:32:33Absolute fantastic header from Fleming.
00:32:36But that's simple, is it?
00:32:37But that is too simple because you've got the overload.
00:32:40People are going to say, OK, Chelsea was down to ten men.
00:32:42But just look at Santos' position here.
00:32:45They're pointing at each other.
00:32:47Look how easy this is for Burnley to get through.
00:32:51As we roll it on here, he's not even looking.
00:32:55He's not even looking.
00:32:57And he's cost his team a goal.
00:33:00A wonderful heading from Fleming.
00:33:01Let's not take anything away from Burnley.
00:33:04And then, they could have lost it.
00:33:06Again now, they go a little bit closer.
00:33:09They thought, OK, let's get closer to Warrell and Fleming.
00:33:11But now, Brun Larsson's got all this space in the middle of the field, which could cost them.
00:33:18And these are the things that could cost them in the Champions League.
00:33:21And why it's so frustrating to see this, Chapas, because all this takes is leadership, organisation.
00:33:28If Burnley would have broke Chelsea down and played and used the extra man, you could say, hands up, you
00:33:33know what I mean?
00:33:34It is what it is.
00:33:35But on a set piece, where you've got an overload and you're not doing the basics correctly, it's just not
00:33:41good enough.
00:33:41And look, it isn't just the defenders there who aren't doing the basics correctly.
00:33:45Mike highlighted Santos as a midfielder there.
00:33:48But he is constantly changing his back four in the Premier League.
00:33:52They haven't had the same back four in successive games.
00:33:55Surely that's where you start, isn't it?
00:33:57As a manager, as a coach, with a settled back four, if you can?
00:34:01Yeah, absolutely.
00:34:02And I think it's happened all season.
00:34:04This was happening with the previous manager.
00:34:06And I think Chelsea, they've got that many players.
00:34:08And to juggle the players around, you don't know if there's pressure coming from above to do that.
00:34:14But to be successful and to be challenging to win trophies, you need to have your back four in place.
00:34:19You're probably two midfielders and your forward and goalkeeper.
00:34:22If you don't have that in place, then it's very difficult to find that consistency to go and challenge or
00:34:26put yourself in a good position.
00:34:28Well, he's still trying to find his best back four, isn't he?
00:34:30And them words after the game were pretty harsh to the players, but he's being very direct and he knows
00:34:35he won't stand for that.
00:34:36You just don't know who's the leader in there, who's going to lead in that back four.
00:34:41Because you look at all the defenders, they're quite similar in how they play.
00:34:44And I don't see a standout leader.
00:34:46Important to say though, Burnley deserved their point.
00:34:49They've got four out of six now in their last two games, both away from home.
00:34:53And maybe away from home suits them a little bit better at the moment.
00:34:56Yeah, maybe. I thought in that first half, obviously, they rode a look a little bit.
00:35:01I thought Chelsea could have maybe scored at the second or the third.
00:35:04But once that didn't happen, then the red card come.
00:35:07And they had six crosses in that last sort of part of the game and created a lot of chances.
00:35:12So yeah, maybe unlucky not to win it in the end.
00:35:16Next, third place, Aston Villa against Leeds. Jonathan Pearce, watch this one.
00:35:22In Villa's first home, Premier League Saturday, three o'clock kickoff in just over a year.
00:35:27Unai Emery looks to become their quickest manager to reach 100 wins.
00:35:31Up against the Leeds side who haven't won away in ten league matches,
00:35:34the fifth worst run in the top four divisions.
00:35:37Having made seven changes for the FA Cup defeat by Newcastle,
00:35:40Villa return virtually to the team that beat Brighton here ten days ago.
00:35:44Although Matty Cash returns after missing the last two with a knee problem.
00:35:47And Leon Bailey is preferred to Jadon Sancho for his first league starts,
00:35:51returning from the loan spell at Roma.
00:35:53It's his 150th game for the club.
00:35:56Leeds make three changes from their league draw at Chelsea,
00:35:59with Pascal Streich and Anton Stack returning to the defence.
00:36:03And Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front for his 300th career league game.
00:36:10Konza's touch carries it into the path here on Stack.
00:36:17Here's the run of that.
00:36:18Calvert-Lewin took it brilliantly.
00:36:20Out comes Martinez.
00:36:22Referee has a look.
00:36:23Calvert-Lewin went tumbling forward.
00:36:25Don't think that's a penalty.
00:36:26Referee agrees.
00:36:28Lovely ball this.
00:36:30Bit of disguise on it.
00:36:31Calvert-Lewin's touch took it too far ahead of him really.
00:36:36Good Munson fine football leads.
00:36:38Here's Aronson.
00:36:38Carvert-Lewin goes near post.
00:36:41Not getting a second chance to get the crossing.
00:36:43Well dealt with defensively there by Konza.
00:36:47Good Munson.
00:36:50They can get a crossing there through Gruov.
00:36:52He uses Ampadu instead and he was clipped.
00:36:56Untidy challenge.
00:36:57For Molly Watkins.
00:37:00Free kick here then for Leeds and Stack prepares to take it.
00:37:06He's gone for goal and scores brilliantly.
00:37:10Anton Stack puts leads ahead.
00:37:12He caught Emi Martinez absolutely cold.
00:37:19Martinez looking away to his left.
00:37:22Stack hammers it to the goalkeeper's right.
00:37:24And beats him all hands up.
00:37:27Goalkeeper won't want to see that again.
00:37:30Leeds will love to.
00:37:31Time and time again.
00:37:32They lead at Villa Park by one goal to nil.
00:37:35Leeds again go long to Calvert-Lewin.
00:37:42Aronson's to his right-hand side.
00:37:44Lays it back.
00:37:45Another precision effort.
00:37:47But just flash wide.
00:37:49They're really creating chances now.
00:37:51Leeds United.
00:37:52Ilya Gruov with it.
00:37:54Goodness, that's close.
00:37:59Bayley.
00:38:00Bayley.
00:38:01Onana.
00:38:03Glanced away there.
00:38:05By Justin who's appealing for an offside.
00:38:08It's a corner to Aston Villa.
00:38:10And Leeds are not happy here.
00:38:13He certainly looked offside to me.
00:38:19Swept in.
00:38:21Looking for Watkins.
00:38:23One back by Cash.
00:38:27A little bit loose.
00:38:29Can they get the second cross in by Douglas-Louise?
00:38:32Mings has stayed forward.
00:38:34Watkins is in there.
00:38:35Mings touches it on.
00:38:36Good save.
00:38:37Watkins couldn't react to turn it in from Onana's effort.
00:38:41So close to an equaliser on the stroke of the half.
00:38:45Good flick on by Mings.
00:38:47Onana from close range.
00:38:49Goalkeeper spread himself and then Watkins couldn't readjust
00:38:52to get to the rebound.
00:38:55And there are boos ringing round Villa Park from Villa fans.
00:38:58Their side struggling at home again.
00:39:03Must be said that Aston Villa are playing with very little confidence.
00:39:10Need a strong second half here Aston Villa.
00:39:13Rogers with the touch on.
00:39:14Watkins with the set of Wendy.
00:39:17That's a good start to the second half for the home side.
00:39:22And his team found it very difficult to break down Brighton here in their last home game.
00:39:27It took a late home goal.
00:39:29And certainly finding it difficult against Leeds.
00:39:33Sancho to Wendia.
00:39:36And Barkley.
00:39:37Rogers wants it played to feet.
00:39:40Sancho.
00:39:41Cash.
00:39:42Low cross in.
00:39:43Mings.
00:39:43Brilliant block.
00:39:45Brilliant block for Leeds United.
00:39:48Stack save them there.
00:39:53Can Villa get back into the title race if still dark horses in that race?
00:40:02Good run.
00:40:04Purposeful.
00:40:05Breaks back to Barkley.
00:40:07Neat touch.
00:40:07Playing better now Aston Villa.
00:40:09Much better.
00:40:10Buendia.
00:40:11Gets the shot away.
00:40:13Off the post.
00:40:14Watkins.
00:40:15Offside.
00:40:19Aston Villa needed that goal desperately.
00:40:24He'd been in an offside position when the Buendia shot came in.
00:40:28And Emi Buendia was desperately unlucky.
00:40:40Bogle with the cross high.
00:40:41Brilliant diving header effort.
00:40:43Super effort for Leeds United.
00:40:45And the goalkeeper sprawls the save to Denain Mecha with his first touch having come off the bench.
00:40:53Stretching, stretching.
00:40:54Martinez did well.
00:40:56Victory today.
00:40:57Will take them very, very close to what I expect to be the survival mark.
00:41:04The fullest ambition of the season will nearly be achieved.
00:41:09Tommy Abraham.
00:41:11Back at Aston Villa.
00:41:12Had a loan spell here earlier on in his career.
00:41:15When he was a Chelsea player.
00:41:17Here's Calvert-Lewin.
00:41:18Pokes the shot.
00:41:20Martinez had to sprawl and get it away.
00:41:24Played very well, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
00:41:27The last England Cup came in July 2021.
00:41:30Who will deputise for Harry Kane in the summer?
00:41:33In the World Cup.
00:41:34Is he a candidate?
00:41:43Here's Rodgers.
00:41:45Rodgers.
00:41:46Abroham stabs it round the corner.
00:41:58Rodgers.
00:41:59Rodgers.
00:42:01Rodgers.
00:42:01Rodgers for Aston Villa.
00:42:02.
00:42:08Rodgers.
00:42:08Rodgers for Aston Villa.
00:42:10As we approach the last 90 seconds.
00:42:16Can Leeds hold on for a precious away win?
00:42:19It'll take them almost to safety.
00:42:22To the far post, Konza rose.
00:42:27Aston Villa have gone out of jail.
00:42:301-1, right at the death.
00:42:33Konza headed it down and Tammy Abraham flicked it home.
00:42:37The vital touch was by the Villa substitute.
00:42:42And it came off Abraham's knee and high above Dominic Carver-Lewitt.
00:42:47And that Premier League away win eludes Leeds again surely now.
00:42:57It was a dream to come back and a dream to play for this club again.
00:43:02You know, I'm happy to be here.
00:43:04I said, you know, we've been doing so well this season.
00:43:06I said, I'm just going to bring extra energy, bring my experience and help the team as much as possible.
00:43:11In the first moment after a game, when you concede that late and you had chances perhaps to score the
00:43:16second goal before
00:43:17and also the goal was avoidable, of course, you're a bit disappointed.
00:43:20But overall, you have to say properly, it's also the fair outcome of this game.
00:43:24It was a pretty equal game.
00:43:26And I have to say, I'm just proud of my Warriors today.
00:43:28Yeah, we've had a difficult away game here against the team in title race and we're so close to win
00:43:33all three points.
00:43:34It's a good, valuable point for us.
00:43:36And yeah, many compliments from my players.
00:43:38Before the free kick, I talked to my defenders to pass and to draw and they asked, yeah, maybe you
00:43:44go second post.
00:43:45Then I was like, yeah, I go second post.
00:43:47But then I saw that the goalkeeper is a bit lurking on the ball through the second post.
00:43:52And then I just tried it because why not?
00:43:54This match is very difficult.
00:43:56And this is the consistency we must keep in 38 matches.
00:44:01Today we played the day 27 against the Elite United.
00:44:05They were performing and competing fantastic.
00:44:07They deserve to draw.
00:44:09Even when we were the first half losing, I think we controlled better the match.
00:44:15The second half, we created chances, even more than then.
00:44:18But they had two and other good chances to score.
00:44:21The season set pieces has been, you know, one of the key factors in football.
00:44:24And, you know, we just had to be ready.
00:44:27You know, we were hungry.
00:44:28Well done to Esri for the first contact.
00:44:30And I, you know, I was there for the second contact.
00:44:32But, you know, I was talking about the support there.
00:44:34Week in, week out there.
00:44:35You know, one of the best supporters in the world.
00:44:38Well, for a chunk of that game, Leeds got it spot on tactically.
00:44:42Yeah, I thought they did.
00:44:42They were really organised, disciplined, but also brave as well.
00:44:46They were going man-to-man at times throughout the game.
00:44:48But also, they were in a block and they cut the space out in the middle of the pitch
00:44:53and forced Aston Villa wide.
00:44:55And if we see here, there's the shape.
00:44:58Really compact.
00:44:59And then Ampadu and Stark, who were brilliant, by the way, all game.
00:45:02Ampadu starts to press off.
00:45:04Calvert-Lewin then blocks the left centre-back off.
00:45:06It forces Aston Villa to come down there, right-hand side.
00:45:10And then all the Leeds players behind can get set if you look.
00:45:13There's no space.
00:45:14There's no one can get on the ball.
00:45:16It comes to the right-back.
00:45:17Great jump from the defender.
00:45:20Now, look at this.
00:45:21Five v2 players around the ball.
00:45:23There's nowhere, really, for Aston Villa to go.
00:45:25They do try and get out a little bit.
00:45:27But then they try and play in the middle of the pitch.
00:45:28Again, great pressure.
00:45:30Forcing Aston Villa into making passes into the middle of the pitch.
00:45:33And then great pressure.
00:45:34And they start to lead off on the attack.
00:45:35And here, this is the man-to-man.
00:45:37Very difficult for Aston Villa to play through.
00:45:39So forces Martinez to try a long ball.
00:45:43The brave to keep a high line.
00:45:45And catch Aston Villa offside.
00:45:46So I told you they were absolutely excellent and very well organised.
00:45:50And then here, Morgan Rodgers.
00:45:52Probably Aston Villa's best player at the minute.
00:45:54Time to get in the pocket.
00:45:55Time to get in the space.
00:45:58Nowhere for them to go.
00:45:59Again, the force.
00:46:01Aston Villa to play out wide.
00:46:02Middle of the pitch.
00:46:03No space to go.
00:46:04Matty Cash makes a run.
00:46:06But Leeds deal with it very well.
00:46:10Gunminton gets out of the ball.
00:46:11Doesn't let them take a touch.
00:46:13And it's very difficult for Villa to play again.
00:46:15But here, Morgan Rodgers.
00:46:18This is the one time he gets behind the Leeds United midfield.
00:46:24Stoke.
00:46:26Scanning.
00:46:27Now the ball comes out.
00:46:30Morgan Rodgers.
00:46:31Trying to get on the ball.
00:46:32Trying to get turned.
00:46:33Trying to be effective.
00:46:34And Stoke.
00:46:35Right on him on his touch.
00:46:36Gives him nowhere to go.
00:46:38And then Leeds were very unlucky not to come away from the team.
00:46:41You can see how they're all moving.
00:46:42They're all triggered by each other, can't you?
00:46:44When you see it like that.
00:46:45Yeah, they're compact.
00:46:46And they've been very good over the last few months.
00:46:47They're very difficult to play against.
00:46:49They know what they're doing.
00:46:49They're organised.
00:46:51And then in Cavaloon up front, they've got someone who's scored on goals.
00:46:53And for Villa now, they have an option if Oli Watkins isn't quite on it.
00:46:58There's going to be competition between Abraham and Watkins.
00:47:00There is.
00:47:01And I think Oli Watkins looks like he's lacking confidence.
00:47:04And he's obviously had a difficult season.
00:47:06And now with Tammy Abraham coming in and lurking behind him, maybe he's feeling a bit of pressure.
00:47:12But here, you'd expect Oli Watkins to do well.
00:47:14He snatches at it.
00:47:15It's not really a great effort from him.
00:47:17And this is what Oli Watkins does well.
00:47:19He makes good movements in behind.
00:47:21He's direct.
00:47:22He takes a touch.
00:47:23And this is a shot out of frustration, really.
00:47:25I don't think he had any chance of scoring.
00:47:27And when your confidence is low and you need that little bit of luck, he's marginally offside here.
00:47:32And the ball bounces back off the post.
00:47:34And he thinks he's got to tap him.
00:47:35But he's out of luck on that one.
00:47:38And then Tammy Abraham comes on.
00:47:39And this is actually a very good goal from Tammy Abraham.
00:47:43It's anticipation of the ball getting knocked back across the penalty box.
00:47:47But if you see here, Konza with a great head of the back.
00:47:50He just takes a little step in front of the defender, which doesn't allow the defender to get anywhere near
00:47:54the ball.
00:47:55And that finish off his thigh is excellent.
00:47:58Domna Calvert-Lewin is one of the best leaps in the Premier League.
00:48:01And he just gets it over his head.
00:48:04Aston Villa were very lucky to come away.
00:48:06And you'll want Ollie Watkins to respond to that competition, won't you?
00:48:08Not feel threatened by it.
00:48:10He has to.
00:48:11I think in football you have competition.
00:48:13Tammy Abraham's come in.
00:48:14He's scored goals for Aston Villa before.
00:48:16He looks like he's settling in very quickly.
00:48:19And he scored a couple of goals in his last two games.
00:48:21How do you deal with that, Wayne?
00:48:22That competition?
00:48:23You know, when someone's coming in.
00:48:25You know they're coming in for your plays.
00:48:27He struggled a little bit with Duran when you remember.
00:48:30Well, you have to.
00:48:31I think what we don't see now is clubs with many centre-forwards.
00:48:35And Ollie Watkins has rarely been the standout or the only forward.
00:48:38Now with Tammy Abraham coming in, that's the pressure which football brings.
00:48:41You have to deal with it.
00:48:42He has to respond.
00:48:43And certainly if he wants to go to the World Cup, then he needs to perform a little bit better,
00:48:46I think.
00:48:47Now we have four games on tomorrow's Match of the Day.
00:49:10You can hear commentary of all of those games on BBC Sounds tomorrow.
00:49:14Parts of Five Lives, Premier League Sunday from midday.
00:49:17Also on Sounds, hear more from Wayne on his podcast.
00:49:20The next episode will drop first thing Monday morning.
00:49:23The football interview with Michael Carrick is on BBC One after Match of the Day.
00:49:27You can watch that any time on the iPlayer.
00:49:28And there's highlights of the second legs of the Champions League playoff round on Wednesday night.
00:49:36Micah, stop it.
00:49:37You've got to fear the giggles.
00:49:38Stop it.
00:49:39Brentford are two points off the top six, having taken more points from their last ten than any other team
00:49:44in the Premier League.
00:49:45Brighton there.
00:49:45Visitors, James Field is your commentator.
00:49:49The contrasting numbers don't need the complex data models employed by these clubs to analyse.
00:49:54Brighton are at a crossroads in their season.
00:49:56Brentford have a first European campaign in their sights.
00:49:59For the hosts, Michael Payone misses out with a knock picked up in training.
00:50:03So Aaron Hickey starts at Ryback, while Jordan Henderson is recalled to replace Yehel Yamyuk, who's on the bench.
00:50:09Henderson and Igor Tiago are both fresh, having not been risked on the plastic at Macclesfield on Monday.
00:50:13It's a record-breaking day for 40-year-old James Milner, as he becomes the Premier League's record appearance maker.
00:50:20He features for the 654th time to knock former teammate Gareth Barry off top spot.
00:50:25He and Mats Weaver start for the first time since December, with Joel Veltman and Carlos Baleva dropped to the
00:50:30bench.
00:50:36Tiago uses his body well there.
00:50:39Bruggen gives his straight to Matthias Jensen, who goes for it!
00:50:43For Bruggen able to recover in time.
00:50:47Well, there are some fine technicians in this Brentford midfield.
00:50:51Brighton don't need to be giving them opportunities at openings like that.
00:50:55It's a tricky patch for Fabian Herzler.
00:50:58Three successive defeats, no goals scored in that time either.
00:51:02They have had a whole week on the training ground.
00:51:07Mitoma quickly into Jack Hinshelwoods, spilled by Kelleher.
00:51:1415,000 gasps in this stadium collectively there.
00:51:18Plenty thought that was going to end up in the back of the net.
00:51:21Milner.
00:51:30Milner.
00:51:31Lifting it over there for Hinshelwood and Mitoma going on.
00:51:34He took it brilliantly.
00:51:35And Kelleher did really well to stop it.
00:51:40Milner with that initial ball over and Mitoma then took the second ball in his stride.
00:51:45Both of his goals this season have been on Brighton's travels.
00:51:49It was nearly another there.
00:51:52Van Hecker.
00:51:53Went to Welbeck.
00:51:55Pulls off Ayer.
00:51:58Went by Hickey, who's forced to concede another corner.
00:52:10Gros.
00:52:11Went towards Dunk.
00:52:13Milner.
00:52:14Well, that would have been a story.
00:52:17Well, the Premier League appearance record had stood since February 2018.
00:52:21Milner made his debut in the top flight at Upton Park back in November 2002.
00:52:29Wattara.
00:52:32Puts it away.
00:52:35Brighton suddenly have numbers in good areas.
00:52:37Gros.
00:52:38Mitoma.
00:52:39That's two chances he's had now.
00:52:42Only two chances thoroughly wasted.
00:52:47Fabian Hur to the side looking much improved in this one, but not taking those chances.
00:52:52And Igor Thiago maybe should have taken his there as well.
00:52:5817 Premier League goals so far this season, but in his last five games he's only scored one penalty and
00:53:04that's it.
00:53:06He still has a few months to impress Carlo Ancelotti ahead of the World Cup.
00:53:14Mitoma.
00:53:22It's in eventually.
00:53:28And Brighton find a way through.
00:53:33First goal for them in four games.
00:53:37There haven't been too many smiles on those away fan faces in recent weeks.
00:53:42It was nearly a goal of the season contender.
00:53:46Down off the crossbar.
00:53:48And Gomez there to steer it home.
00:53:51That's the second for him in his last 17 appearances.
00:54:04Hinchelwood gets goal side of Henry.
00:54:06And the ball across looking for Welbeck who has a great chance.
00:54:09And how's that?
00:54:11For an opportunistic goal.
00:54:15Nathan Collins has only just come on, made a real mess of that.
00:54:20And as we head into added time at the end of the first half, Brighton have breathing space.
00:54:28And just 45 seconds after coming on, Nathan Collins couldn't sort his body shape out.
00:54:34And Danny Welbeck there to score a sixth in nine games against Brentford throughout his career.
00:54:44Looking to kick on in this second half.
00:54:48Brighton in this position of comfort will really make it hard for them.
00:54:52You can guarantee that.
00:54:55Yarmouyuk.
00:54:56You've got Thiago.
00:54:58A target, but maybe a sign of things to come for Brentford who've started this second half sharply.
00:55:04Thiago netted at the Amex in the reverse fixture.
00:55:07And missed a penalty four minutes into added time at the end of the game.
00:55:14Henry.
00:55:21Free kick.
00:55:22That's now full to the floor by Gomez.
00:55:25I've had a few free kicks in these kind of positions throughout the afternoon without really making the most of
00:55:30them.
00:55:33Notice Jensen.
00:55:34Around the back.
00:55:36You've got Thiago down.
00:55:37And Watara couldn't keep it beneath the crossbar.
00:55:41But it's been that kind of day.
00:55:43You've got Thiago making the contact he needed to.
00:55:47The acrobatics from Watara didn't work out.
00:55:57High ball towards Damsgaard who gets there.
00:55:59And for Brook and off his line.
00:56:02But Damsgaard puts the ball straight into his hands.
00:56:05And that surely had to go in for Brentford if they were thinking about getting back into this game.
00:56:09And had a look.
00:56:11And didn't get enough power.
00:56:16And the outside is Watara.
00:56:23Watara in towards Eagle Thiago.
00:56:25Oh, nearly an own goal.
00:56:27Stopped superbly by Verbruggen.
00:56:29Here's Donovan.
00:56:32Still Rommel Donovan.
00:56:33Full of pace and ideas.
00:56:36Pinball in the Brighton penalty area.
00:56:38And Hinshawatt eventually flops over to win the free kick.
00:56:43Veltman it was.
00:56:44The sub who nearly put it into his own net.
00:56:47Verbruggen there with great reflexes and agility to get down.
00:56:52Well, quite fitting on the day that James Milner has become the record appearance maker in the Premier League.
00:56:58He's put in such an assured, experienced and composed performance.
00:57:02And great respect being shown to Milner on all four sides of this stadium as well.
00:57:07And he's not done yet.
00:57:10You know, to pass the mark, it's obviously a big number.
00:57:13And it's, you know, it's not something that I've really concentrated on, to be honest.
00:57:18There's been a lot of talk around it.
00:57:19But for me, anyone who knows me, it's all about the team and wanting to push there.
00:57:23But, you know, it's a good opportunity to give a nod to everyone who's helped me get there.
00:57:27You know, obviously the family and the sacrifices there.
00:57:29They've made family friends and people who work with physios and sports scientists, things like that.
00:57:33So, you know, I'm surrounded by a lot of young lads in there.
00:57:36And, you know, I just want to contribute to their careers and hopefully push them and help them get from
00:57:39where they are now to their highest level as quick as possible.
00:57:43That's what I'm there to do.
00:57:44We played really good football in the first half.
00:57:47We controlled the game, we scored goals in the right moments, and we controlled the key moments quite well.
00:57:53We had a lot of experienced players on the pitch who know how to do this, who are able of
00:57:57doing this, and they showed it today.
00:57:59We showed a lot in the second half.
00:58:01We couldn't quite take the opportunity early enough that would really cause them more problems in the later stages.
00:58:08So, overall, it's a disappointing day.
00:58:11You've got to be really honest with that disappointment with the performance level, certainly in the first half.
00:58:15But, like I said, in the second half, I thought we performed a lot better.
00:58:18When you get older, things change quickly in football, and you never know what's around the corner.
00:58:23But I'll keep pushing, and let's see where that takes us.
00:58:26Big win for Brighton, but we have to talk about James Milne.
00:58:29You both know him.
00:58:30You've both played with him.
00:58:31He's the same age as you.
00:58:33He's older than you.
00:58:34I mean, it is a phenomenal achievement.
00:58:38Absolutely incredible.
00:58:40I mean, he's such a top guy, though, as well.
00:58:43See, it can't be nothing but happy for him.
00:58:46In terms of how he applied himself in training, always first in, last out.
00:58:53He always give 100%.
00:58:55And I think, in terms of his ability, it's not rated as high as it should be.
00:58:59See, people call him, he's got very good work rate, and he scored a few goals.
00:59:04But the transition to go from Leeds, where everyone talked about him, won the kid.
00:59:09Then he went to Newcastle, I played against him.
00:59:11I thought that might just be his level at the time.
00:59:14He was sort of playing on the wing.
00:59:15Then he goes to Villa, scores all them goals, gets his big move to Man City, where he's a Premier
00:59:19League winner.
00:59:20Then goes to Liverpool after that, and obviously now he's at Brighton.
00:59:24But he's just a perfect career, and to do it how he's done it, I've got nothing but admiration for
00:59:30him.
00:59:30And still an important part of that Brighton team, when he plays.
00:59:34I mean, he's still performing to a high level.
00:59:37He is, and I think what he's done today, firstly, that achievement is incredible, to keep playing.
00:59:43He started the same year I did as a 16-year-old, and to still be doing it at 40.
00:59:48But when you play with him, you get to know him.
00:59:50I expected him to go on and play until that long, because he's so professional.
00:59:54He does everything right, he works hard.
00:59:56And he had a big influence on the game today.
00:59:58I thought he was fantastic, and he's adapted his game.
01:00:01He's played off the left, he's played off the right, he's played at full-back.
01:00:04And today he played as a double pivot in midfield, and he was all over the pitch.
01:00:07So I think there's a few years left in him.
01:00:10Right, West Ham sit three points from safety.
01:00:13Bournemouth went there unbeaten in their last six.
01:00:15Tom Gale at this one.
01:00:18There's growing belief amongst the players on the pitch and fans in the stands
01:00:22that West Ham can drag themselves clear of trouble.
01:00:25Victory plus defeat for Forrest could see the hammers out of the bottom three come Monday morning.
01:00:30Crescensio Somerville, with six goals in seven, is enjoying the best goal-scoring form of his career.
01:00:36Bournemouth are targets in a third consecutive win on the road.
01:00:40Being out of the FA Cup means it's 11 days since they were last in action.
01:00:43Ray-Anne could become the Premier League's youngest ever player to either score or assist in each of his first
01:00:49four appearances.
01:00:52The last five league meetings between these two have all ended in a draw.
01:00:58I'm confident Bournemouth would take a point if offered it right now.
01:01:01Not so sure that's the case for West Ham.
01:01:05Castellanos, early corner.
01:01:14It's going to be the captain, Jared Bowen, to take.
01:01:17His first touch of the football.
01:01:19Decent one, off the line!
01:01:23Almost a perfect start here at the London Stadium for the home side.
01:01:29And it's Axel de Sassi gets contact on it and has a second bite.
01:01:34And he just can't keep it down.
01:01:37I know Espirito Santo certainly feels his side is showing plenty of character and they're up for the fight.
01:01:44Castellanos, Somerville's the target and he gets to him!
01:01:50Excellent delivery.
01:01:52Not a clean contact but another West Ham chance.
01:01:57Ruud van Nistelrooy, recently appointed as assistant coach to Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.
01:02:03Surely here to see Crescensio Somerville, who's yet to receive a senior international call-up.
01:02:13Another case here from Bournemouth.
01:02:16Scots!
01:02:17Straight at.
01:02:18Lance Hermanson.
01:02:21Yet to be seriously tested in this opening 45.
01:02:26Andoni Iriola watching on from the stands, serving as touchline ban.
01:02:31Following the third yellow card last time out at Everton.
01:02:35Sean Cooper and Tommy Elphick relaying.
01:02:39The head coach's instructions.
01:02:41There's a blistering start to the game with that chance inside the opening couple of minutes for the Hammers.
01:02:47But I'll be honest, it's been pretty meh ever since.
01:02:51There's never been a nil-nil between these two sides.
01:02:55Can't be many in here tonight who want to see that record broken.
01:03:01Forced to Juve.
01:03:05West Ham free kick.
01:03:15Fernandes.
01:03:18Met by Mabropanos.
01:03:19Helped on by Socek.
01:03:21Somerville couldn't bring it under control.
01:03:24Rayan, can he look to counter?
01:03:26He's away from Fernandes.
01:03:28Castellanos won't catch him.
01:03:30Rayan at full speed here.
01:03:32Rayan.
01:03:34Devastating!
01:03:36And that was about as close as it comes to nestling in the back of the West Ham net.
01:03:43He's had a quiet game, but this is all it takes.
01:03:47Inches away.
01:03:49And that would have been a wonder goal.
01:03:52And a gasp.
01:03:55Into Somerville.
01:03:57Skips away from Hill.
01:04:01Wants someone to make a run.
01:04:04Really very frustrated with his teammates, but they are coming forward here.
01:04:09Juve.
01:04:10Towards the near post of Wilson!
01:04:14Save from Petrovic.
01:04:15That may be Callum Wilson's first touch since coming on.
01:04:20And a near immediate impact from the former Cherry.
01:04:26And he's met by the palm of George Petrovic.
01:04:32Scott.
01:04:33Away from Wan-Bissaka.
01:04:36Alex Scott.
01:04:38To Rayan.
01:04:40Rayan into Kruppi.
01:04:42His layoff.
01:04:43Scott hits it!
01:04:44And Hermanson.
01:04:46Down low.
01:04:50Chances for both teams here.
01:04:53Both feel as though they can win it.
01:04:57Immediate touch for Tavernier.
01:05:00Gets it back.
01:05:01All alone, though.
01:05:03Needs help.
01:05:03Or does he?
01:05:06Marcus Tavernier.
01:05:07On as a sub.
01:05:08Looking to win it.
01:05:09Oh, what a ball across!
01:05:15Scott deflects into the midriff of Magassar.
01:05:19What an introduction here for Marcus Tavernier.
01:05:23No one in blue in sight.
01:05:24He says, well, go all alone then.
01:05:27No one is gambling for Bournemouth.
01:05:29Busting a gut to get into that six-yard box.
01:05:33The chance goes begging.
01:05:35Last time out here at the London Stadium.
01:05:38Manchester United scored a stoppage time.
01:05:40Equalise it.
01:05:43Still full of running.
01:05:45Priscensio Somerville.
01:05:47Bournemouth are retreating here.
01:05:48Is it going to fall for Bowen?
01:05:51It does!
01:05:53Who got the final touch?
01:05:55The referee says it was all Jared Bowen.
01:05:58So no corner.
01:06:01Bowen gets there first.
01:06:04The VAR have checked and don't see it as a reckless challenge.
01:06:10Well, for the sixth consecutive league meeting, it ends in a draw between these two sides.
01:06:15Full-time.
01:06:16West Ham 0-0.
01:06:17Bournemouth 0-0.
01:06:20We could have won.
01:06:21We could have won.
01:06:22I think we played a good game.
01:06:24We were compact and solid in defence.
01:06:26We created a lot of situations.
01:06:28We had good chances.
01:06:29We had good chances.
01:06:30So the feeling is that it's a good game that we perform.
01:06:34Unfortunately, we didn't achieve the result that we wanted and we need.
01:06:37But at the same time, when the team competes like that, we have to see that we have to keep
01:06:42believing and improving.
01:06:43I think especially second half, the game has been quite open.
01:06:46First half, I think we haven't been attacking well.
01:06:51We haven't had good individual performances from our offensive players.
01:06:55Second half, yes.
01:06:55The game opened, more spaces, more transition moments.
01:06:59And I think we've been more comfortable there.
01:07:01We haven't scored.
01:07:02We had our chances.
01:07:03But it could happen anything in the second half.
01:07:07At the end, it was sometimes a little bit crazy.
01:07:10The game is still 0-0.
01:07:12But I prefer the second half than the first one.
01:07:15They seem quite upbeat there, Nuno.
01:07:17Didn't they weigh in which, although they didn't win, I suppose if you look at the numbers, you can see
01:07:22why he's positive?
01:07:23Yeah, I think they were very unlucky not to win the game.
01:07:26And maybe if they're a little bit more clinical, they'd go on and win the game.
01:07:29But it wasn't a great game, to be honest.
01:07:31But I think West Ham probably deserved the win.
01:07:33I think the form over recent weeks has been really good.
01:07:36So it's encouraging for the manager.
01:07:39But these games, I think these are the games they have to go and win if they want to stay
01:07:43in the Premier League.
01:07:44But especially when you look at what they've got coming up, they don't have the greatest run coming their way.
01:07:50So when you're at home in those kind of games, you probably need to take full advantage, don't you?
01:07:55Yeah, you do.
01:07:55Especially when you're in the game like they were today.
01:07:57I mean, the huffed and the puffed.
01:07:59I mean, conceded possession.
01:08:00But in terms of when they were in the final third, they created some decent chances.
01:08:04But when you've got Liverpool next, it's just...
01:08:06Three of their next four in the league away.
01:08:08It's always going to be difficult.
01:08:10But, I mean, when you play like that, I think defensively there was a lot more solid.
01:08:14And that's a good platform for them.
01:08:16OK, let's take a look at the Premier League table before we go.
01:08:21Manchester City have now narrowed the gap on Arsenal to just two points with that win over Newcastle.
01:08:27Newcastle remain in tenth.
01:08:28Chelsea and Bournemouth both draw and go up to fourth and eighth, respectively.
01:08:33Villa stay in third.
01:08:35Two of the bottom three drew today, meaning West Ham are now just a couple of points behind Nottingham Forest.
01:08:42Burnley are eight adrift.
01:08:44Brighton's first win in seven sees them go up a couple of places to 12.
01:08:49Leeds remain in 15.
01:08:52Thank you to the two naughty schoolboys, Micah and Wayne.
01:08:56In particular, though, thanks to James Milner for showing that you're not past it once you hit your 40s.
01:09:02Before you say anything, I know I'm in my 50s.
01:09:04Good night.
01:09:05Good night.
