Bernie Rayno breaks down what to expect in the Southwest as a record-breaking heat wave continues to grip the region and when relief could arrive.
Transcript
00:00The record shattering heat wave continues in the southwest right in the Friday and the impacts of
00:06this heat wave are going to be far reaching. It increases the fire danger. It raises the cooling
00:12demand and health risks. The early snowmelt constrained the water supply later in the
00:18summer months. And believe it or not, for most, the heat is going to peak on Friday and all time
00:24March records have already been set. How about Phoenix on Wednesday? 102 degrees. That's
00:29the new all time record high for March and the earliest occurrence of 100 degrees we've
00:35ever seen in recorded history in Phoenix. That's a stunning stat. But what's even more
00:41stunning to me is this water vapor loop. You could see the strength of the high with the
00:46clockwise flow around it and all of the burnt orange underneath that high showing you intense
00:52downward motion that allows the heat to continue. So the question is, is when does that upper
00:58high leave? Well, it's going to start moving east Thursday night, Friday, and especially
01:04over the weekend. That's going to do two things. Number one, that's going to increase the onshore
01:10flow across California. That's where you'll see the cooling first on Saturday. Then on Sunday,
01:16as the high weakens across Texas, you're going to start seeing temperatures chipped away a little
01:21bit and coming on down in the Southwest. It stays warm, but the record heat will finally end.
