Should Jaylen Brown win NBA MVP?
Transcript
00:00And happy St. Paddy's Day to everybody out there, especially all my Irish brethren.
00:05Last night, watching the Celtics game might make me feel like maybe I could be wrong or hoping that I'm
00:12wrong.
00:13Because in the world of basketball, it's the egos are so big and we've seen it before because there's only
00:18one ball.
00:19And it's about that guy with the ball who dominates a game and who's the best player on the team.
00:23But if Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum can find that common ground of being able and willing to share the
00:33spotlight and not have some of the subliminal stuff that we always, maybe we might create some of the narrative.
00:41These guys could potentially play together for the rest of their career and really do some damage.
00:48Because watching Jalen Brown last night and what he was able to do and obviously watching him against Oklahoma City
00:53and then knowing what Jason Tatum is, you could have two of the top five players in the NBA on
01:05your team going after championships every single year until the wheels kind of fall off those guys.
01:14Because they're basically almost the same age where you could be looking at something that they could really do something
01:20special for this Celtics organization when it comes to winning championships.
01:25As long as they're willing in the world of basketball to kind of set aside the egos and not worry
01:30about, you know, MVP chance, who's the guy, whose team it is.
01:35I don't think you'll know probably until next season because I feel like, and I give Jason Tatum a lot
01:41of credit.
01:41Like, I feel like he has come back and had his, he was nervous about what his role was going
01:47to be, what the chemistry was going to be.
01:49He, it feels to me like he said, I'm going to come back and whatever I need to do, whatever
01:54my role is, I'm going to accept it.
01:57You look at last night, like, like Jalen Brown was clearly the alpha on that basketball team.
02:04You know, Jason Tatum is in there last five minutes, Jalen Brown on that, on that steel, that, that steel
02:12that he had, got the ball from Booker, gave it up to, to Jason for, for the, for the layup.
02:19They, they, they work together really, really, really well.
02:23Uh, or at least they did last night and have small sample size since, since his, his return.
02:30So if, but you like, it's, it's a really good point.
02:34If they're willing to be that way, the yin and the yang, right.
02:38Uh, if they're willing to be that way, then there's no reason to ever, uh, have them part.
02:44Right.
02:44And the thing I look at, and there was a couple of times in last night's game where you hardly
02:49ever see Jason Tatum being wide open because after, you know, the ball goes in or a driving dish and
02:57he gets a good look at it.
02:58And that's about the attention going towards Jalen Brown.
03:02Yeah.
03:02And so if you can kind of, like you said, you know, yeah, maybe we manufacture some of it in
03:08the media, but because I believe a lot of it is because of the subliminals you get a, give us.
03:14It's like when I listen to a rap song and I start to hear things and I'm like, wait a
03:17second, is he talking about this person until you tell me who you really talk about?
03:21My mind's going to be thinking about you talking about this person.
03:23You go, you go right to the beef.
03:25Oh yeah.
03:25Who has, who has beef with whom?
03:28But, but I think like you, you talk about, uh, Jason.
03:32Tatum being open, like Jalen Brown is the one who is doubled, like in that game last night, uh, end
03:40of that game, it was, it was, it was Jalen.
03:42So I, I, I think you, you make a really good point.
03:45Well, it'd be interesting to see moving forward if they can, you know, coexist in that world.
03:51You know, we, you know, uh, I heard MVP chance for Jalen at the free throw line.
03:56Well, yeah, let me, I'll get to my lead, which is just that those, uh, rightly so the chants were
04:02loud.
04:02Last night and Jalen Brown was asked about it post game.
04:06And here's what he said.
04:06That's pretty cool.
04:07I'm not gonna lie.
04:08Um, it's pretty awesome.
04:10You know, to be at my, at this point in my career and be able to get that love from
04:13the fans.
04:14Um, it's pretty awesome.
04:15And, uh, it was pretty cool too.
04:17I was on Southie last night or yesterday during that day.
04:20And I got some MVP chance as well on Southie.
04:22I think that might've been a little cooler, but, um, it's, he, he should be the MVP.
04:30We've gone back.
04:31It's like, this is like Drake May versus Cam Newton all over again, but, um, you really can't argue.
04:38There's no, there's no, uh, easy schedule argument that can be deployed against, uh, Jalen Brown.
04:43Um, um, what he has done with those that are around him in the absence of Jason Tatum is MVP
04:53worthy.
04:54I mean, the team was, uh, what was the 41 wins was the, was the over under on this basketball
05:00team going into the season.
05:01I think, and they're at, I think they're at 45 this morning.
05:04They are, um, they're the best defensive team in the NBA, right?
05:09Number one defensive team in the NBA right now.
05:12And they were mid, you know, a couple months ago.
05:16Right.
05:16Yeah.
05:1641 and a half, Greg.
05:17Good job.
05:1841 and a half.
05:19See, the only, the only issue is, is like, and I think it's going to be the national, you know,
05:24voters or the people who, who vote are gonna, I don't know.
05:28In the NBA, it kind of gets to like, we got to lean towards one guy and give it to
05:33him multiple times.
05:35Like they did it with the Joker and it was like, well, other guys are doing good, but for whatever
05:39reason, the Joker was doing something that we'd never seen before, which is, you know, averaging a triple double.
05:45And it was like, he's, he's in rare form.
05:47Now you're saying that SGA is that person.
05:50Well, yeah, because the thing that they talk about now, and he's the only guy I believe in NBA history
05:55to do it.
05:55He just beat Wilk Chamberlain's record.
05:57And he's at like 129 straight games of 20 points or more.
06:02And so, and their team is very good.
06:05Their team has the, I want to say they have the best record in the NBA.
06:09And that's what I think people, if he didn't have that record of, you know, 28 or 29 straight 20
06:16plus games, maybe they may give Jalen a little bit more juice or a little bit more credit.
06:22But because of that record, they're going to be like, oh man.
06:25And if he's, and if you watch him play, but who knows when this streak is going to end.
06:30So by the time that they're getting ready to vote, he might have done it for them.
06:34I don't know, 140.
06:35I mean, how many games left in the season?
06:37What is there like 15 games?
06:39There's a month of the season.
06:40Right.
06:40So what is that?
06:41Over 140 games straight of 20 plus points or more.
06:45I mean, that's, I mean, that's impressive.
06:47But I think that will be the deciding factor why they'll give, maybe give it to SGA.
06:52I have a question about the future of the Celtics.
06:55Do you think there is a chance, that there is any chance it would ever occur that Brad Stevens would
07:00want to go back to Indiana?
07:02Is there anything that would get him?
07:04That's like, what do you mean?
07:05Like a coach or.
07:05Well, Butler, Thad Mata just left.
07:07He's announced his retirement from Butler.
07:09Okay.
07:10Which he took to the final four.
07:11You mean back to coaching college basketball?
07:13Is there any part of him that was raised, born, reared as a coach that would bring him back to
07:20coaching in any capacity and away from the Celtics?
07:23I would say bring him back to coaching.
07:24I could see that door being open because he is a coach.
07:27I don't think he'd go NBA coaching.
07:29I don't know where he'd go, but I'm just saying he probably is going to get that itch to coach
07:32again.
07:33Do you think he'd leave this level of success, though?
07:35Like, he is crushing it as the GM.
07:37And this team is good year after year.
07:39I don't know why you would ever leave that.
07:40Because if your itch is to be a coach and you love being a coach, some guys just love that
07:45more than anything.
07:46You know what I mean?
07:47Yeah, I guess.
07:47I just, I feel like the security he has right now with how well he's doing and the team is
07:52doing, I don't know, maybe you put the financial wealth ahead of that first.
07:56You make your money.
07:58You stay the Boston GM.
07:59And then maybe later in your career, when you're kind of settling down, that's when you go back to coaching.
08:03I mean, financially, I think he's very, he looks like he doesn't live up to what he makes.
08:08And he's probably going to make good money going wherever he is as a coach.
08:12So it's like the financial element is not going to be the biggest thing.
08:16It's whether or not he's a young guy.
08:18If the coaching itch is greater than just being the GM who sits back there, he makes some deals.
08:24But what have you seen that says that he has a coaching itch?
08:28Like, I think he's phenomenal.
08:29No, no.
08:30He's been phenomenal in this role.
08:32Right, he has been.
08:33And I'm not saying he has, but to Curtis's point that he's bringing up, it's just some guys, when they
08:37come up as a coach and they love coaching and they want to be out there, maybe that's just something
08:42that itch gets very itchy and he says, you know what, I want to go back to coaching.
08:47I don't know.
08:48He's won a championship here.
08:50He's won a couple.
08:50If he goes to Butler and wins a championship there, that's something he hadn't accomplished before.
08:55I don't know.
08:55I mean, if you make a half a million in Butler, Indiana, you can probably buy half the town.
08:58Yeah, and he's going to make more than that, I would bet.
09:01All right, we are at the Dubliner.
