00:00We're all feeling a little Irish, whether we are or aren't.
00:03Let's get a lot of green.
00:06Andy, verdict on...
00:10I got a couple at the house, but I was going to grab a couple more
00:13because I'm anticipating a great evening.
00:17I've got a corned beef on the smoker in the yard right now.
00:21I'm going to go pick up a couple more stouts to go along with the WBC.
00:25Will you or will you not be enjoying a stout this evening?
00:29A nice, dry Irish stout.
00:31If that's a Guinness, I'm going to try a Guinness tonight.
00:33I'm not doing it with the boys because I got some plans previously.
00:36I did bring them a four-pack so that they can enjoy their Guinness.
00:40Thank you, Andy.
00:41After, after, you heard after the show.
00:45After the dry.
00:46No one told me that.
00:48No, Stiz might actually hit the right buttons more frequently if he knocks back one or two.
00:52Guinness makes the lubes up the space bar a little bit, gets that space bar nice and functional.
00:57Maybe that's a test.
00:58Maybe we should try that in the 5 o'clock hour.
01:01But, yes, it is St. Patrick's Day, so I think some of our rejoins will indicate that.
01:06I think Fitzy handled a lot of those.
01:07I do have one simple request.
01:08I would like to hear from Kermit at some point about how easy or not easy it is being green
01:13in this world that we live in.
01:15So we'll maybe get that in there.
01:17But I'll tell you, Jalen Brown seemed to fit in with all the green and the fun and the Southie
01:22and the Boston.
01:24And, I mean, I don't think he had any gallon jugs of alcohol with him because he is a professional
01:29athlete who was preparing for a game the next day.
01:32But he seemed to be right at home.
01:34And Jalen Brown talked last night about the trip to the parade and how he felt and the MVP chance.
01:41So let's hear about JB and his interaction that we touched on yesterday with the fans at the parade.
01:47It was fun.
01:48That was my first time going to St. Patrick's Day.
01:51I didn't know it was like a big thing.
01:53It was like, I felt like it was like a million people out there.
01:55It was a lot of people out there.
01:56And it was cold and it was early.
01:58But it felt like the whole city was drunk, you know.
02:00But, you know, I had a good time, you know, just to go out and say hello to the people
02:05of Boston and things like that in that manner.
02:08It's pretty cool.
02:09Also, I have some Irish in my blood as well.
02:12So it just made it more surreal.
02:14It's pretty cool.
02:15That's pretty cool.
02:16I'm not going to lie.
02:17It's pretty awesome, you know, to be at this point in my career and be able to get that love
02:21from the fans.
02:23It's pretty awesome.
02:24And it was pretty cool, too.
02:25I was on Southie last night or yesterday during that day.
02:28And I got some MVP chance as well on Southie.
02:31I think that might have been a little cooler.
02:35What was that experience?
02:36So that was Jalen Brown talking about Southie, the MVP chance, the fact that he's Irish.
02:41Yeah, Irish in his blood?
02:42Wait, wait, wait.
02:44Of course.
02:44What's wrong with that?
02:45We all do, Stanley.
02:47Yeah.
02:47He probably did the 23 and me or whatever and got the breakdown and the percentage.
02:51Yeah, Jalen O'Brown.
02:55Good old Jalen McBrown.
02:57He really is one of us.
02:59He really is one of us.
03:01And that was my point yesterday, that he's continuing to fit in.
03:03I saw The Athletic wrote a story about how the love between JB and Boston is growing and at a
03:09place that it's never been before.
03:11Now, obviously, that starts on the court, right?
03:14That love grows when you have 41 points and you win the game.
03:16Like, if he were going, if he were having one of your random Peyton Pritchard games, Fitzy, and he was
03:21like 0 for 4 from 3 with 0 points, I don't think the love he wouldn't be saying, oh, you
03:26know, I'm actually Irish and it's fun and everybody blah, blah, blah, blah.
03:28No, like, you wouldn't be getting that.
03:29No, you would not be feeling that.
03:31But that's, like, look, you could then say, okay, well, you know, Boston, did it really take you this long,
03:37like, almost a decade to fall in love with your guy who's been one of the better players in the
03:41NBA?
03:42Like, did he have to, like, take over as the number one option and be the alpha and be an
03:48all-NBA caliber MVP candidate player?
03:51To which I would say, well, it's actually sort of more been a little bit of the Jason Tatum show.
03:55You said Batman to the Robin earlier in the show.
03:57So, now that he's been the featured player, yeah, people, that's how it works.
04:02You know, people, there's also been no curious off-court politics, speeches, marches, engagements, lectures, holier-than-thou incidents with
04:15Jalen Brown.
04:15I think that whole, he's managed the whole thing of letting us know how smart he is and what he's
04:21got going on.
04:21And Boston has dropped all of their pretense.
04:24They're just having a really good functional relationship.
04:27And I love to see it because, you know, there's room in the Boston sports fan heart, Andy, for Jason
04:32Tatum and Jalen Brown at the same time.
04:33I would also argue that there's also room in the city of Boston for the different faces of what may
04:39be Jalen Brown.
04:40He can still go rub elbows at MIT and be a smart guy and help people with his, you know,
04:48thoughts and finances and all of that.
04:50And also, and I don't mean this to be disrespectful, maybe just slum it at a parade full of drunken
04:55Irishmen, right?
04:56Like the people that are either Irish or pretending to be Irish and using it as an excuse to, like,
05:00you can be both, right?
05:01Like, you can do up here and you can kind of take it down a couple notches.
05:05And we've accused him maybe at times of not being able to do that, always being the smartest man in
05:10the room or pseudo into like, OK, it's OK to just acknowledge that there were a lot of drunk people
05:15out there having fun and they like you.
05:17And it's also to acknowledge in the middle of it, you were probably trying to sell some hundred and twenty
05:22dollar hoodies and some sneakers and, you know, build your brand.
05:25It's America. I mean, can the man also not be an opportunist and a capitalist, a businessman and a merchandiser?
05:31Come on, nothing wrong with that.
05:33Absolutely. And the example I would use in this city is Robert Kraft, in a weird way, seems to find
05:39a way to fit in in a lot of levels, right?
05:41He can be in the billionaire boardroom level. He can party it up with, you know, rappers and all these
05:48like or he can just, you know, connect with a Fitzy and talk about how he used to sit on
05:54metal benches.
05:55And like, I think there's a talent to that. And the better you do that, the more you grow your
06:00fan base.
06:00And I think Jalen Brown is in the midst of that. But what I did want to bring up and
06:05maybe I was getting ahead of myself.
06:06Maybe the green had me super happy today. The JB jersey. Are we starting to have to maybe re-evaluate
06:14where this duo fits in the history of the NBA?
06:18And if they're on track for what people think they're on track for, to have a legitimate chance to win
06:24another title in what was supposed to be a gap year, a title that is absolutely built around them, right?
06:30This title is not going to be built around, you know, anyone other than them. There's no like Porzingis's or
06:36like this is going to be the JT and JB show no matter what.
06:40They didn't add talent this offseason. They subtracted talent. And if they do that, do we?
06:46Because Dan Ball sent me actually a blog item. They, you know, somebody put together the best duos in NBA
06:52history.
06:52They had these guys 17th because they only have one title, but there's guys ahead of them with one title.
06:57Hakeem and Drexler down in Houston. You know, some of those, I would even argue LeBron and Wade in Miami.
07:05I think those are some that you can pass when you enter that second ring.
07:10You're not going to get Scotty and Michael. That's that's a ways off in the horizon.
07:14No, Shaq and Kobe still a ways off in the horizon. And honestly, the McHale bird is what they have.
07:22Koozie Russell. Yeah, there's others. Well, I'm not saying you can't because as Terp, as Terp likes to point out,
07:29they're about at the age when Jordan and Kobe and those people won their first title and they already have
07:35one in their back pocket.
07:35So if they start adding to that at this age and stay together for a while here, are we seeing
07:42a potential top 10 duo of all time?
07:45Maybe more than that, depending on how many rings they can collect.
07:48Oh, my gosh. Was was everyone able to hang in there while they went to the playoffs every year?
07:52Multiple Eastern Conference finals and even brought you a bonus title before they entered their athletic and teammate prime
07:58and really started their run of dominance. Get him out of here.
08:02All they do is disappoint me every Memorial Day weekend. Come on.
08:05This is like they're they're now like like grasping at Andy, the the peak of their superpowers and they may
08:14be there for a while.
08:16They've been coming up to altitude, coming up to altitude, coming up to altitude.
08:20And now they may be cruising at an elite rate for years to come.
08:25If they can stay together, if they can surround them with talent, if Joe Missoula doesn't go crazy and, you
08:31know,
08:31end up getting tossed off the team because he judos somebody in the wrestle somebody too hard in the locker
08:38room or in the practice court.
08:39Yeah, they may just be able to do this for a long time to come.
08:43And I'll tell you, well, I don't think this would necessarily push them past, you know, the Twin Towers and
08:48the Olajuwon Drexler immediately.
08:51This would not only if they were able to, I would almost say making it to the finals this year
08:56would be as impressive as when they won the finals a couple of years ago.
08:59Oh, I think an argument can be made that making it to, you know, I know Stiz was playing a
09:05video of Chisholm earlier.
09:07Oh, good. I'm glad that's what it was.
09:08He yes. And he was like, wow, this guy's having fun.
09:11And I'm thinking, why shouldn't he be? He tore down his team.
09:14He saved himself 250 million dollars and they're competing for a title.
09:17He's like, this is perfect. Pay less, win more like this is a perfect scenario for him.
09:22I didn't even think of this, Andy. Now somewhere cut to Wick Grosbeck's dad.
09:26Damn it. I got out too early. Right. You don't have to spend a half a billion dollars.
09:30You didn't now. And the reason behind that is because of these two guys.
09:34And I agree that this could be a more impressive run in ways than being built to be a championship
09:41team, being expected to be a championship team.
09:44This was expected. And I know JB loves to throw this out there and others like this was supposed to
09:48be a gap year.
09:49We had to figure it out on the fly. We're still figuring it out on the fly because JT's back
09:53and all of those things.
09:54If you win there, this isn't Patriots ask because the Patriots this year was very much unexpected.
10:00But this is an unexpected title likely to be repeated.
10:04Oh, and Andy, look at this. Like the thing I was saying earlier about how other teams should look at
10:09this and kind of marvel and or be fearful of it.
10:13They're kind of showcasing that your model now for long term success in the NBA is you can afford two
10:19guys.
10:20Then you need one or two mid tier stars. That's where you've got your Derek White's and your, we'll say,
10:27Peyton Pritchard's.
10:27But even he's on such a discount deal. And then you just have to have a bunch of good like
10:32scrappy rookies and role players.
10:33And that's your that's your key to success because they they Derek White is getting what he makes 30 million
10:39a year.
10:39You got two 60s, a 30. Then you got Hauser and Pritchard somewhere near 10 and a couple of role
10:45players.
10:45And they're right there at the cap without having to pay an absurd amount of luxury tax.
10:50Well, this is like one of those things. And we'll get to you one sec real quick, Stiz.
10:53But, you know, those things that make the rounds on social media where it's like make an all time great
10:58team for fifteen dollars.
10:59Pick one guy from the or, you know, you can spend fifteen so you can have two fives.
11:03But then you only got five dollars left for the other three.
11:06You know, they're figuring it out on the fly here. Yes, Stiz.
11:08We're up against it right now. But I think that wasn't the end of our conversation when we were watching
11:13that Chisholm video.
11:14And I think maybe we should talk about that on the other side.
11:17OK, it was more to that conversation, Andrew.
11:20More. You get into teases. Yeah.
11:22Yeah. And I love teases that even have the host in full suspense, because I don't know what you're talking
11:27about.
11:27But we're going to talk about Stiz's tease and the conversation we had about the Celtics and Chisholm and much
11:32more on the other side with your phone call.
11:34617-779-7937 here on WEI Afternoons.
