Should/Could Celtics maximize Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown's trade value end of season?
Transcript
00:00Uh, now he's doing it with Jason Tatum and I don't know.
00:04I mean, I feel like it's always been, at least from a fan perspective, uh, media perspective,
00:10it's been the two J's.
00:12So I don't, you know, I, I, I, I've never looked at it and said, Hey, this is Jason
00:18Tatum's team.
00:20It's, it's always kind of the two of them.
00:21So the fact that he has had that chip chip on his shoulder, if you would call it, that
00:27is interesting to me because I don't know that, that I have felt that.
00:31Yeah, it's, it's not, I mean, it's not shocking to me because we look at the, uh, two J's
00:40and we, we look at it from a bias perspective, like which one do we like better than the
00:45other?
00:46So that's kind of the way we look at it, but from being in that position and I understand
00:51him, what he's saying is like, all right, you get this opportunity to finally show what
00:57you can do, improve it, knowing you could do it the whole time.
01:00I felt the same way when I was in new England and you know, and I remember, you know, saying
01:05that like, I could put up the same type of numbers as guys like Tony Gonzalez and the
01:09rest of the guys in the NFL.
01:10If given that opportunity, I didn't get that from new England.
01:14But when I went to Minnesota and got that opportunity, I was then 90 on Madden.
01:18Oh yeah.
01:19I was the lead.
01:20I mean, did you put the numbers up?
01:22Yeah.
01:22I mean, I led the team in receptions.
01:24I, you know, I broke a few records in Minnesota.
01:26Yeah.
01:26Better than Moss.
01:27Yeah.
01:27You sat on them by accident.
01:29I did, right?
01:30Some of them, them, them 12 inch vinyls.
01:33Breakdance on a couple too.
01:34So when you hear a guy say like, oh, this is what I've always known I could do.
01:39I just needed the opportunity.
01:41That kind of, if that gives you an insight to how he's thinking, not how we're thinking,
01:47like you might be like, oh, it's fine.
01:48But that's, yeah, I mean, I granted, I would say it's regular season and he'll have Jason
01:52Tatum back come playoffs.
01:54And a part of what has been really, really good for this team is the two of them together,
02:00having that opportunity to have the two of them together.
02:03So, um, you know, my mind, if I were him, wouldn't immediately go to, which I understand
02:10why you're suggesting it, but, uh, this is it good done.
02:13I've proven it and now I need to go and, and, uh, run, run my own team without Jason
02:18Tatum.
02:19Like I, it has much more to do with him than it does with Jason Tatum.
02:23And I think that there's been this desire to throw this huge wedge between them and
02:27that many in the media are blamed for creating an issue that doesn't exist.
02:30They could be perfectly fine.
02:32Like, I don't think they're good friends.
02:34I don't think they despise one another, but these are the two of the most competitive
02:38people on the planet.
02:40And so when Jalen Brown hears his whole career about, you know, you're not Jason Tatum, it's
02:46Tatum's team.
02:46We're going to run the offense through Tatum.
02:48And he gets this opportunity with the team that was depleted compared to last year, far
02:52less talented.
02:53And he tweets out the side-by-side link.
02:56Yeah.
02:56He's doing that to say, look, I am the number one.
03:00I can be the number one and you can't have two number ones.
03:03So it's just to put all the other stuff with ownership and cost and everything else, like
03:09this is the time.
03:11If you're ever going to maximize the investment, you trade Jalen Brown at the conclusion of
03:15this team and you get the conclusion of the season.
03:19What did I say?
03:20To team team.
03:20So you're saying there's gin in this.
03:22So you're saying you would, you would, you'd go out and try to trade them at the end of
03:28this season.
03:29Absolutely.
03:30Even if, even if they do, they win the title.
03:32Oh, completely.
03:33Wow.
03:34I think even more so if they win the title.
03:36Of course.
03:36Wow.
03:36You would do the same thing.
03:37No, I don't know that I would.
03:39I would, I would even consider trading Tatum before Brown, the way Brown's played.
03:44Like, I don't know.
03:46We haven't seen Tatum without Brown reach this kind of level.
03:50Like Tatum is an all NBA player, but can he take it up another level?
03:54Like, is there, is there a way that if Brown is not on this team, that Tatum can step up
03:58This is blasphemy.
03:59No, I'm just asking the question.
04:00I'm simply posing the question, Greg.
04:02Because we've seen Jalen Brown now without Tatum, without other superstars, just guys
04:09like Derek White and Peyton Pritchard who are good players, but nothing, nothing amazing.
04:13Right.
04:13He has stepped it up to an MVP level.
04:16Right.
04:16Legitimate MVP level.
04:18Can Jason Tatum take that next step?
04:20Because if not, you have to consider training Tatum over training Jalen Brown.
04:24But the problem is you'll never know that because, you know, you knock on wood, you don't want
04:29to see Jalen, you know, get hurt and have to be out for a long period of time to do
04:34that.
04:34But see, this is why I asked, this is why my lead was, could they not put the differences
04:43aside, but could they say, okay, we both enjoy being, sharing the spotlight.
04:49But that's why it's, they have done that.
04:53Like they have put those differences aside.
04:55But they've never done it with one of them, with one of them knowing that they could be
04:57the equal to the other.
04:59Yes.
04:59That's the difference.
05:00And Jalen Brown has always been the one to sacrifice.
05:02Yeah.
05:02So now the question becomes, will Jason Tatum sacrifice?
05:05Because if Tatum is willing to...
05:07Creed rejoin?
05:09Yeah, please.
05:10If Tatum is willing to kind of give a little bit more to Jalen Brown, this balance could
05:15work.
05:16It could perfectly be fine.
05:17And they could last another seven years and maybe win multiple championships.
05:21But if Jason Tatum doesn't want to relinquish anything, then that clash becomes even more.
05:27And then it's really on Joe Mazzula to be like, because where you see it rear its ugly
05:33head is at the end of games.
05:34I mean, we saw it with, you know, when we watched the, I don't know if it was necessarily
05:39the last dance documentary, but when Phil Jackson said, okay, Tony Kukoc, you're going to take
05:45the last shot.
05:46And Scottie Pippen was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:48This is my team.
05:49You know what I mean?
05:49So Mazzula has to say in that situation, like, all right, we're down by one.
05:54Jalen, I want you taking the shot.
05:56And how does Jason react to that?
05:58Or, hey, we're down by one at the end of a big playoff game.
06:02Jason, I want you taking the shot.
06:03Or design and how does, how do they react to that?
06:06But so far, I don't get any of that kind of vibe from Jason Tatum.
06:11Like, no, no, no, but it's different though, Greg.
06:13We haven't, you, you, you keep saying you don't get the vibe and I understand that.
06:17But Jalen in the past was never given the opportunity.
06:21Like he said, to prove himself.
06:24He's been given that all season long and he's went, he's exceeded everybody's expectations.
06:29Except his own.
06:30He knew we could do that.
06:31Now, Jason is coming back off injury.
06:34So he's kind of like, all right, I'm still easing into it.
06:37When Jason is back to the Jason he thinks he could be, which I think is going to be the
06:41beginning of next season and you go through the season, then are they willing to be like,
06:46you know.
06:47But you've heard this season, Jason Tatum grapple with this publicly.
06:52Well, grapple with what it was going to be like when he came back.
06:54Yes.
06:55He didn't know if he could come back.
06:56That he thought he might be having an issue with the chemistry.
06:59Like, that is something of a guy that sees Jalen Brown take over a role that he didn't
07:04think he could.
07:04Yeah.
07:05All right.
