The Middle Ages believed rings to have magical properties and this one in particular has us diving deeper into that.

00:00Now, we all learned from Captain Planet that rings can have power, but it turns out people
00:04thought that even before the 1980s. A new story we published on PopMech shows that they thought
00:09that all the way back in the Middle Ages. Now, this story fascinated me because it involves a
00:14gold ring that was found in Norway's oldest city, and the writer uncovered something really
00:19interesting about this ring's potential properties. Now, this ring, which dates back to somewhere
00:23around the 9th to 11th century, had a blue sapphire gemstone in it, and this writer discovered that
00:29back then they thought the blue sapphire gemstone could have mystical properties. So, one example
00:35they cite is that some people thought the blue sapphire had divine power and could give the
00:41wearer the ability to heal, which reminds me of my days playing Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and
00:47Dragons, you know? Other people thought that it would cool inner heat and therefore preserve chastity,
00:54which, now that I think about it, also reminds me of how much time I spent playing Magic the Gathering.
