Small flakes of metal may reveal where the Lost Colony of Roanoke may have gone.
Transcript
00:00The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the biggest unsolved mysteries, maybe in history, but definitely in U.S.
00:06history.
00:07TLDR for the sake of time, a colony known as Roanoke was established.
00:13Three years after it was established, the people there completely disappeared.
00:17We don't really know what happened to them.
00:19The only evidence that they left behind was the word Croatoan carved in a tree, which was the name for
00:25the local native group.
00:27One of the major theories as to what happened to the colonists is that they functionally just assimilated into that
00:34local native group,
00:34and then they sort of went off together and weren't able to be found again.
00:38And that theory has recently gained an additional piece of evidence, thanks to an amateur archaeologist by the name of
00:45Scott Dawson.
00:46He found these little pieces of metal that are called a hammer scale, and they are a byproduct of iron
00:53forging.
00:54The nail in the coffin, as Dawson is claiming, is that the English would have had access to iron forging,
01:01but the natives would not.
01:03And the presence of this hammer scale in the location that the native tribe was known to spend a lot
01:07of time
01:08is an indication of significant cultural exchange between the English and the natives.
01:14Scott Dawson is certainly convinced of this.
01:18Whether or not everyone else is remains up for debate,
01:21and there will certainly be further research on the topic moving forward.
01:25So,
01:25you
