00:00Today we have a find that's part of a hundred year history of the scientific unraveling
00:05of a mistake.
00:06This object was found in Egypt in 1920, so a little over a hundred years ago, and scientists
00:13have recently realized that it wasn't what they originally thought.
00:15At first, because it's a small piece of metal, the researchers who found it thought that
00:20it was an awl, the sort of object you use to poke other objects when you're making tools
00:25or chipping ice.
00:26But in fact, it turns out that it's been re-examined recently by researchers from the University
00:31of Newcastle and from Vienna's Fine Arts Academy.
00:35And using x-rays, they've realized that it was more than met the eye.
00:40In fact, it's really a sort of drill, and they were able to deduce what kind of drill because
00:48it also had a very small leather strap that was quite eroded, but which the researchers
00:54found was used as part of a bow drill.
00:58And so it's a sort of drill that uses the strap to turn the drill so that it's actually a
01:03lot
01:03more powerful than an awl would have been.
01:07Interestingly, here's the big twist, it's also much older than researchers ever realized.
01:12In fact, it's 2,000 years older than any similar tool that's ever been found.
01:17So it sheds a lot of light about the transition in ancient Egypt from the Stone Age to the
01:23Age of Metal Tools.
01:24And that's where it may be made of также.
01:24It's one of the bestman has turned into in an easy way.
01:24So it's one of the bestman's precise ones.
01:24So let's see it.
