An organization run by citizen scientists in Wisconsin discovered a rumored sunken ship.
Transcript
00:00Citizen science is a really great way that people can contribute to the ongoing discovery of the
00:05world around them. One organization that's doing this is called the Wisconsin Underwater
00:09Archaeological Association, and recently they made a great discovery. About 139 years ago,
00:16a ship sank in Lake Michigan off of the coast of Wisconsin on a winter night. Now, when the
00:22captain abandoned ship, he thought he was in very deep water. But it turns out the Underwater
00:27Archaeological Association found evidence contradicting this claim. It came from a
00:32lighthouse keeper who had seen the vessel in much shallower water closer to shore.
00:36Well, lo and behold, when the citizen scientists went out with sodar on a boat, in about two hours
00:44they were able to detect the wreck that had gone undiscovered by previous searchers for about 50
00:49years. This wonderful discovery reveals a lot about how things happen and then are sort of
00:57misunderstood or misrepresented in history until someone clever enough comes along and
01:01takes a new look at the evidence.
