00:00Shell middens are a surprisingly interesting phenomenon.
00:03Around the world, indigenous peoples have always formed these sorts of piles of discarded shells near coastal areas.
00:12Naturally, of course, it happens in places where people use seafood in their diets.
00:17This is common in the southeast coast of America, for example,
00:20where you have shell middens that form islands in the coast of Florida.
00:24But recently, researchers have discovered a shell midden island just off of the coast of the northernmost island of Fiji,
00:31which is in the South Pacific.
00:32And it comes from about 1,200 years ago from the early Lapita people who settled there.
00:39And amazingly, this sort of island is built entirely of the remains of shells that were used for food.
00:45The food was eaten and the shells were discarded.
00:48And it creates an entirely new island. It's really something to check out.
