00:00I'm gonna want to zoom in for this one I'm a makeup artist with about 20 years experience
00:05and this is how I do complexion as a makeup artist I just said that you'll find most makeup
00:10artists use a lot less foundation or concealer than what you might imagine skin prep just a
00:13little bit of moisturizer I actually keep skin prep very much to a minimum when I'm doing makeup
00:17because I typically don't like loads and loads of slippery stuff underneath my makeup like that is
00:22pretty much all I would use on myself on any given day and if I was having a day out
00:27and about
00:27in the sun I would skip this step entirely and just do SPF but when you're working on a subject
00:33depending on what they're doing the skin prep changes if they're out and about doing press
00:37in and out of cars in and out of studios in and out of photographic situations you just assess
00:43every situation as it comes just a little bit of something glidey on the skin I don't use primer
00:49hot take I think they're a bit pointless that said if you've got a primer that you live for
00:54don't change it for no one if you feel like you need that product in your routine stick it keep
00:59it keep it around I just don't find primers that necessary for me I've never used them on my clients
01:04it's never interfered with me the way makeup wears or sits I never use them on myself it never
01:09interferes with how my makeup wears or sits but everybody's different I do do on my skin is and
01:15daily is I wash my face thoroughly before I go to bed with with a face cloth and a cleansing
01:19balm or
01:19cleansing oil of sorts that face cloth and that little slight abrasion from the fibers of the
01:25towel are giving me just a gentle exfoliation every day and then a couple of times a week I
01:29use the REN Ready Steady Glow tonic it's in an orange it's an orange fluid use it at night ideally
01:35sometimes use it in the day I just make sure to tissue off the excess with a bit of water
01:38um another ingredient that I use and live by and swear by is SOS mist from Tower 28 I always
01:43have this
01:43on my desk um but as far as skin prep under makeup it's either SPF or a little bit of
01:48moisturizer
01:48so I'm not going to do any underpainting with bronzers or blush I'm just going to go straight
01:52with concealer and I'm going to do a very minimal amount because this is typically what I do on
01:56any of my clients or on any job um every now and again I might start with like a skin
02:03tint
02:03just to even out the complexion by 10% but typically I just go straight in with a concealer
02:08does every makeup artist do this probably not do a lot of makeup artists do this probably yes I take
02:12a brush like this this is the number eight from Spectrum and Me and I prime it into the brush
02:17this is
02:17something that I've been showing you guys for a long time and the amount of people that have
02:21dm'd me to say this tip changed their life I would be a zillionaire because it's literally almost all of
02:26you so then that brush if you watch that little red spot on my chin as soon as I hit
02:31that brush
02:31to my chin after I've rubbed in that product on the back of my hand it's it just disappears and
02:37goes
02:37away and then you just slowly start to stipple product around what you'll find that makeup artists do
02:42not do is cover the skin entirely I think you'll find makeup artists very specifically go in at
02:48certain parts of the face as opposed to over the whole surface of the face my friend Liv who I
02:54work
02:54with with one of my clients is like the way that you are the way that you dissect the face
02:59as a makeup
03:00artist is so interesting because I I don't look at the whole face and think oh yeah everything needs
03:05to go everywhere I think oh well there's a bit of redness there so let's hit that right there or
03:09there's a little bit of you know redness right there so let's hit that right there there's just
03:13sort of more of a nuanced approach when you do complexion like this and this could be in the form
03:18of a concealer or a foundation I just chose to use a concealer there are differences to both concealer
03:22and foundation depending on how a brand has formulated that product for their you know brand
03:30to me if I was to launch a complexion product tomorrow it would be a concealer hands down over a
03:36foundation because I just I think that there's been like I don't think that the industry has
03:40been lying to us and saying like we need a foundation and a concealer because like I said
03:44sometimes concealers and foundations do very different things sometimes a foundation is sheer
03:48and lightweight and radiant and your concealer that you might use to supplement that with is full
03:52coverage and matte those two things make complete sense together what doesn't make complete sense
03:56together in my opinion is a dewy radiant sheer skin tint and then a dewy radiant sheer concealer
04:02that that is pointless you want one to have a bit more coverage than the other for it to give
04:06you
04:06the benefits of a lot of options with how your complexion looks um that's why for me I would
04:13always go for a concealer not that all concealers are created equal and have coverage but most concealers
04:18do have more coverage and therefore um you know aside from like an a double wear foundation which is you
04:27know a very very full coverage long wearing foundation I personally don't like the look of a
04:32foundation across my entire surface of my face because I like seeing these little little bits
04:37of sun that have happened over the years or like I don't hate this little spot of melasma on my
04:42cheek
04:42or I don't hate this little spot of melasma on my cheek yes there's a time and a place where
04:45I might
04:45want to cover it but I feel like I'm digressing the point of this video is to say priming the
04:51product
04:51into the brush just getting the product into the brush and then maneuvering it around the face
04:56wherever you have redness and um hyperpigmentation if you therefore want to cover it or breakouts now
05:03this would be I think a good first pass for most people if you have heavier marks or more acne
05:12areas
05:13to cover I would simply go in again for a second pass and do exactly the same thing and I'm
05:19just going
05:19to use that little bit of redness on my cheek as an example like you just want to sort of
05:22stipple the
05:23concealer in and just like leave it alone I'm just going to get a little closer to you for a
05:28sec
05:28and just sort of let it chill for a moment and then essentially you I don't know whether you noticed
05:33but I didn't go heavily in here with concealer because that area for me always creases and I
05:39also don't mind that little bit of redness or that little bit of color in my eye but I can
05:43get pretty
05:44close because if you watch the brush is giving you a splay when the brush hits the face no matter
05:49what
05:49the size of the brush is it's gonna get bigger when it hits your face right so you're gonna have
05:53this you know imprint wherever your imprint is it's gonna get wider because of the brush
06:01anyway I don't know whether this is helpful at all I really hope it is uh because complexion I think
06:05is that one thing that if you I think master complexion for you and I remember when I was a
06:13you know training makeup artist I don't know I did that when I was a makeup artist in training I
06:19remember complexion being the thing that the makeup artist that I was working under would care the
06:24most about um and if the skin looked like skin and the same with photographers photographers care the
06:28most if the skin looks like skin they want the skin to look real healthy and not overly done um
06:33and so yeah that would be how I do complexion I hope that was helpful let me know if you
06:39have
06:39any questions in the chat below also if you ever if you feel like this is too much coverage for
06:43you
06:43you simply just use your fingertips and just pull a little bit of it down and let some of that
06:48color reveal back through like so another thing that I forgot to show you is makeup artists really
06:55like small brushes I was like I thought I was done but I'm not small brushes are really really handy
07:00I'm just going to go to that patch of complexion on the back of my hand you see the way
07:03it picked
07:03up some perfect amount of concealer for under the brow you never want to go under the brow
07:08with product direct from the wand because you're going to get so much product like if I do that
07:12I don't need all that I can blend it all away but then you're going to have a bit of
07:15a ridge
07:15underneath your eyebrow whereas if you just pick it up with a brush like that and just sort of
07:21you know clean up under there some of you might not be able to see a difference some of you
07:25will
07:26it's all perspective um the last thing I'll say is a lot of my videos are like this won't work
07:32on me
07:33because I've got this and this won't work on me because I've got that or your skin's already nice
07:36to begin with whatever I just want to say thank you if that was a cut if you do want
07:41to share those
07:42nice words about my skin looking nice but this tip can and will work for everyone you just
07:48supplement the amount in the area that you want to use it I'm not sort of trying to say um
07:53this is
07:54the only way of course it isn't uh but this is what I do on all of my clients all
07:59of the time and my
08:00clients don't have we all don't have the same skin my clients do have pretty good skin but if ever
08:05there's a breakout that's more visible on their face this technique works just as good as another
08:11anyway okay bye
