Have you ever wondered who is behind the face of those people we consider successful?

Maybe you have thought about becoming one of those successful people?

Or maybe you feel that success is only for a chosen few and not for you?

In this inspirational and motivational book, author Edward Rohs proves by example that when you are determined to succeed, regardless of the obstacles thrown in your path,

you will find success. This story of personal growth is a must read for anyone with a heartbeat.

Here you will read about people from all walks of life who, regardless of their political affiliations or family origins, have found a way to work towards their chosen profession

or realized their life's calling. Beginning with Rohs' own personal narrative the reader will be introduced to the ideals behind the steps to success.

Meet some of the ordinary people who found a way to work through their hardships to become extraordinary role models to all who wish to succeed. Share in their trials and tribulations and celebrate with them of their successes.

Determined to succeed, they all found away.

01:21Thank you so much for joining us
01:23Mr. Edward Rose
01:24Thank you
01:25You are welcome
01:26You are very welcome
01:26In fact, I want to thank you
01:28From the bottom of my heart
01:29For giving me this opportunity
01:31Because the reality is
01:32I don't think it's no accident
01:34I think God works in mysterious ways
01:36He brought us together
01:37The other day when we were supposed to be on the air
01:39We had mechanical difficulties
01:41Technical difficulties
01:42And you and I got to know each other for one hour
01:44And it was amazing
01:45What a small world
01:46You were from the Bronx, New York
01:48Where I spent volunteering 17 years
01:50With the sporting basketball team
01:51And you were from two or three blocks away
01:54By the Botanical Gardens
01:57And the Botanical Gardens
01:58And the Bronx Zoo
02:00What a small, small, small world
02:02This is no accident
02:03We got together today
02:04And I want to thank you
02:05I really appreciate you having me on your show
02:08Oh, the pleasure is mine
02:09I mean, it wouldn't be a show without you here
02:11Just, you know
02:16The biggest thing I want
02:17I know that you wrote a book prior to this book
02:20So you're a proficient author, I call it
02:22Once you pass the first book
02:23I mean, you're an author, obviously
02:26If you write one book
02:27But you become a serial author
02:29Which is an offense in some cases
02:31I'm just kidding
02:34When you write a second one
02:35Tell me about the first book
02:37And what drove you to write the second
02:39Okay, my first book was called
02:41Raised by the Church
02:43Grown up in New York City
02:45Catholic Orphanages
02:46I spent 19 years
02:48From six months of age
02:49To 19 years of age
02:50In Catholic orphanages
02:52From one borough to another borough
02:53From Brooklyn, Queens
02:55And Long Island, etc
02:57What happened was
02:58My mother and father
02:59Had me out of wedlock
03:00They weren't married
03:01They worked in a factory together
03:02And my father was married to someone else
03:05A person named Linda
03:06And the three of us used to go out
03:08Every Friday out
03:09And socialize
03:10Every Friday night
03:11And then at the same
03:12Then what happened was
03:13My reality is
03:15My father started cheating
03:17And went out with my mother
03:18So they had me
03:20And then when they had me
03:21I was in St. John's Hospital
03:23In Queens
03:24For two or three weeks
03:26Because they didn't know
03:26What to do with me
03:27They wanted an abortion
03:28But they couldn't afford an abortion
03:30So they were stuck in a hospital
03:31And the hospital said to them
03:33Listen, your son's been here
03:35For two weeks
03:36He's got to get out of here
03:37We can't just keep him here forever
03:39So they gave me to a maternal aunt
03:41For six months
03:42In a rooming house
03:43In Brooklyn
03:44Downtown Brooklyn
03:46By the
03:46With the Nets play
03:49Basketball
03:50In downtown Brooklyn
03:51And what happened was
03:52She was in a rooming house
03:54A furnished room by herself
03:56And she was taking care of him
03:58And she couldn't take it
03:59She kept begging him
03:59You've got to get rid of him
04:00I'm going to be thrown out
04:01I'm going to be thrown out
04:02You have to get rid of him
04:03I'm sorry, I mean, I mean, you're so cool
04:05But I can't take care of him
04:07And so
04:09They brought me to my first orphanage
04:11On the steps
04:12It's an angel guardian home
04:13In Brooklyn
04:14And for the first 12 years of my life
04:16The sisters of Murrayson
04:17Took care of me
04:19For 32 years
04:20From I was two years old
04:21To five years old
04:22There was one institution
04:24And from four years old
04:26To six years old
04:26And the second institution
04:27In downtown Brooklyn
04:28By the Brooklyn Navy Yard
04:30Or Brooklyn Bridge
04:32Then we went from there
04:33I went to Long Island
04:34To a place in Saigasa, Long Island
04:37And I lived in dormitories
04:39For, well, really for 19 years
04:40Between 18 boys
04:42And 72 boys in one room
04:46The shelters remind me
04:47Of the way I was raised
04:49Later on in life
04:51I oversaw contracts
04:52Mental health contracts
04:53And I used to get very upset
04:54When I went to these shelters
04:55And they said, what's your problem?
04:57I said, well, this reminds me
04:58Of the way I was raised
04:59They said, what?
05:00I said, for 19 years
05:01I lived in places like this
05:03In one room
05:04For 19 years
05:05Between 18 and 72 kids
05:07And they were shocked
05:09They were shocked
05:10That my upbringing was
05:12But they did the best they could
05:13I'm not criticizing
05:15I'm very proactive
05:16I believe that the nuns
05:18And the brothers
05:19And the ladies
05:19They did the best they could
05:20In fact, the last place
05:22I was at
05:22The institution
05:24The jail was right across the street
05:27Brooklyn Civic Center
05:28Right downtown Brooklyn
05:30And the counselor said
05:31That's Ed Roseman
05:33You leave it
05:33That's where you're going
05:33Right across the street
05:34To the jail
05:35And I said
05:37But you don't answer back
05:38As a child
05:38You always kept your mouth shut
05:40But my brother said to you
05:41You're wrong
05:42I'm going to make it
05:43I'm going to make it
05:44I don't care what happened
05:44So at 19 years ago
05:45I was discharged
05:47And I was in the outside world
05:48By my side
05:48I had no family
05:49No nothing
05:50And they gave me a furniture room
05:51And a job
05:52I knew a stock room
05:53And from there
05:54I was on my own
05:55That gives you background
05:56And then I went
05:58Because of education
06:00Because what happened
06:00Was when I went
06:01From the 8th grade
06:01To the 9th grade
06:03I intentionally got let back
06:05Because I was afraid
06:06To go from Rockaway, Queens, New York
06:08To downtown Brooklyn
06:10Because the kids would come back
06:11And say
06:11Hey, when you go downtown
06:12It's all
06:13You get mugged
06:14Right across the street
06:14You'll get mugged
06:15It's right across the street
06:16To the jail
06:16Drug addicts, etc
06:17On Lentic Avenue
06:18To downtown Brooklyn
06:19So I was afraid
06:20So I came up with a plan
06:24And because I was
06:25I was always in a class
06:26For the gifted
06:26I was always in
06:27Small classes
06:28With the Mariners brothers
06:30Who ran schools
06:31Across the country
06:32And across the main campus
06:33Was the University of Dayton
06:35And I intentionally
06:37Failed all my subjects
06:38Oh my gosh
06:39And the principal
06:40Called me in
06:41And says
06:41Ed Rose
06:42You're failing your subject
06:43You're in the other class
06:45You're in the gifted
06:46What's going on
06:47What's going on
06:47I didn't have the heart
06:48To tell him
06:49That I'm doing it
06:50On purpose
06:50Because I was afraid
06:51To go to Brooklyn
06:53And so
06:54So in the spring
06:56He calls me
06:56And says
06:57I have bad news
06:57For you Ed Rose
06:58I have to hold you back
07:00I made believe
07:01I was upset
07:01I said
07:02I'm sorry
07:03When I walked out
07:04Of his office
07:04I said
07:05Yay
07:07But then
07:09Later on
07:10I learned
07:10To hurt myself
07:12Because when I
07:13Picked my high school
07:13In Brooklyn
07:15I was always
07:15With boys
07:16For 14 years
07:17I was boys
07:18Boys
07:18Boys
07:18So I wanted
07:19To be with girls
07:20So I only picked
07:21The high school
07:22De'Anche High School
07:23In Brooklyn
07:24To be with girls
07:25Not for academics
07:26Not the smarts
07:27Not to learn
07:28Oh my gosh
07:29To be with girls
07:30But that hurt
07:31But that hurt me
07:33And the reason
07:33What it hurt me
07:34Is they gave me
07:35The general diploma
07:36And I never studied
07:38I didn't have to study
07:39It was easy
07:40There was no challenge
07:41So I went
07:43So when I left
07:43They discharged me
07:44At 19 years of age
07:45Into a furnished room
07:47With
07:47With
07:48With
07:48Old
07:49Men
07:4965 years
07:50And older
07:50So 19 years old
07:51I'm in a room
07:52In a room
07:53In house
07:53With these old men
07:55On my own
07:56For the first time
07:56In my life
07:56They were good
07:57They used to
07:58They found me a job
08:00In a stock room
08:00In downtown Brooklyn
08:01And they gave me
08:02A furnished room
08:03And the rest
08:04I was only
08:04I didn't have to cook
08:06I didn't have to shop
08:07I never went to
08:07I never went to a supermarket
08:08In my life
08:09Until I was 19
08:1020 years of age
08:11Oh wow
08:12Everything was brought
08:13To the institution
08:14So I had no idea
08:15How to go shopping
08:16How to check an account
08:17Electric bills
08:18Gas bill
08:19Et cetera
08:19So I was just
08:21Walk
08:22Just walked
08:22Walk
08:23And I decided
08:25To go to community
08:25College first
08:26To get my grades up
08:28Because I had no
08:28High school
08:29I went
08:30First year
08:31Of high school
08:31I went to
08:32Community college
08:32In downtown Brooklyn
08:33And then I went
08:34To St. Francis college
08:35In downtown Brooklyn
08:37And then I wanted
08:38To go to
08:38Fordham University
08:39Judgment school
08:39So then I
08:41Went to
08:42My junior CEO
08:43I went to
08:43Fordham University
08:44In the Lincoln
08:44Center campus
08:46And then I graduated
08:47And then I worked
08:48I worked at an institution
08:49With kids
08:50I coached
08:50With kids
08:51I did mental health
08:53I did all kinds of stuff
08:54And then
08:54I got my master's degree
08:56In social work
08:56Administration
08:57Wow
08:57And then
08:58Fordham University
08:59I was on
09:00Board of the
09:01Alumni Association
09:03Of the School
09:04Of Social Service
09:05And I
09:08Became president
09:09Of the association
09:11And the dean
09:12Of the school
09:13Dr. Peter Bond
09:15Was beautiful
09:16He goes
09:16Ed
09:18You don't realize
09:19It
09:19Look where you came
09:20From
09:21And you had a president
09:21Of one of the largest
09:22Social work schools
09:23In the country
09:24I said
09:24Well
09:24No big thing
09:25Because that's why
09:26You're good
09:26And you're humble
09:27That's why
09:27You're good
09:28You're humble
09:28Yeah
09:29Because as soon
09:30As soon as
09:30You stepped down
09:31They were fighting
09:32Like vultures
09:33To become president
09:34Oh my gosh
09:36But it didn't faze me
09:38And even today
09:39I work with kids now
09:40I work with kids
09:41In Florida now
09:42They try to beat
09:43Shores
09:43At the Basilica
09:44St. Paul
09:44Middle school
09:47Basketball
09:47I coach middle school
09:48Basketball
09:50And I won five
09:51I've been in the
09:52Championship game
09:52For the last six
09:53Years in a row
09:55But before that
09:56For the University
09:56I was the volunteer
09:57Strength coach
09:58For 70 years
09:59From 1982
10:00To 1999
10:01Wow
10:02That's when
10:03For the University
10:04Press said
10:04We gotta
10:05Do your story
10:06And so
10:07For the University
10:08I had
10:09Judith Despin
10:09My co-author
10:10I made me co-author
10:12Because she was
10:13My editor
10:13She took my manuscript
10:15And turned it into gold
10:16Wow
10:16She goes
10:17You're very nice
10:18Making me co-author
10:18She goes
10:19You're very nice
10:20You go with it
10:21I says
10:22You
10:22Look
10:23I have no
10:24I have no
10:24No status
10:25You're
10:27Just like this book
10:28In the second book
10:28Donna Grabowski
10:29She
10:30She was a teacher
10:32And principal
10:32And I know
10:33For 30 years
10:33I made her
10:34The editor
10:35I says
10:36Again
10:36You turn my manuscript
10:37Into gold
10:39And so
10:40And here's why
10:40I did this
10:41The second book
10:41And it
10:42Makes that question
10:43At Fort University
10:44It was the
10:45Dean of the law school
10:47John Ferrick
10:48He's 19 years of age now
10:4910 years ago
10:50I met him
10:51When I was on the board
10:52Of the school
10:52Of social work
10:53And he was
10:54The alumni association
10:55The dean
10:55Of the law school
10:57Right
10:58And he wrote a book
10:59And his upbringing
11:01Right now
11:01Today
11:02Everybody's against immigrants
11:03Immigrants
11:03Immigrants
11:04It's a bad time
11:05To be an immigrant
11:06But the reality is
11:08Immigrants made this country
11:09Yes
11:10And so what happened
11:11Was
11:11Him
11:12An Irish gentleman
11:13His father came
11:15From the island
11:15To the South Bronx
11:16The South Bronx
11:18With five kids
11:19All he had was his hands
11:21He was a laborer
11:22So he couldn't afford
11:23See
11:23They lived in the South Bronx
11:24And he was raised
11:25In the South Bronx
11:25He went to grammar school
11:27Then he went to
11:28Fordham University
11:29Up where you
11:30Well you know
11:31That campus
11:31Yeah
11:32He never lived
11:33The South Bronx
11:34He stayed in the South Bronx
11:35He was turning to Spanish
11:36It didn't phase him
11:37One bit
11:38He went from the South Bronx
11:40To the North Bronx school
11:41By train and bus
11:43Then he's
11:44Then when he went to law school
11:45He went from the
11:46South Bronx
11:47Stayed in the South Bronx
11:49And went down through Harlem
11:50All down to Harlem
11:51The law school downtown
11:52Never was afraid of blacks
11:54Never was afraid of Spanish
11:55Never was afraid of people
11:56I says
11:57John
11:58Unbelievable
11:59He goes
11:59Ed
12:00We were all God's people
12:01We're all God's people
12:02It never fazed him one bit
12:04And right now
12:05He gives to
12:05His first church
12:07In the South Bronx
12:08It's a very congressional district
12:09It's the poorest congressional district
12:11In the country
12:12Wow
12:12And he still goes there
12:15He gives and votes his time
12:16So when he wrote that book
12:18When he wrote that book
12:18I said
12:19I'm writing
12:20You just inspired me
12:21I said
12:21You just inspired me
12:23To write my second book
12:24Oh wow
12:25Wow
12:26That's how I did
12:27The second book
12:27Wow
12:28That is
12:29Wow
12:30I'm sorry
12:30Talk fast
12:31I apologize
12:32No
12:32You're fine
12:33You're fine
12:33I understood everything
12:34I understood everything
12:36You know
12:36It's so beautiful
12:38To see that you
12:39Are sharing your story
12:40Not only that
12:41What you went through
12:42And your family
12:44Is not a traditional family
12:46It's what you make of it
12:48I absolutely love that though
12:50Because it shows that
12:52No matter where you come from
12:53You know
12:55You can find your way
12:58That's why
13:00Well guess how I came
13:01With the title
13:02Guess how I came
13:02With the title
13:03You'll love this
13:03I'm thinking of the title
13:04And I'm telling
13:06The pastor
13:07At my Basilica
13:08Of St. Paul's church
13:09In Daytona Beach
13:11I'm telling the story
13:12I'm very competitive
13:13I don't like losing
13:15And he says
13:16Why not
13:17I said
13:17I'm sorry
13:18I don't
13:19I said
13:19I like that title
13:20Why not
13:20And so because of him
13:21That's why I called it
13:22Why not find a way
13:24Even though he's a pastor
13:25He's a priest
13:26He's competitive too
13:27He coached basketball too
13:28He ran track
13:29At the University of Florida
13:30So he's an athlete
13:32So you know
13:32He had this dance competition
13:33Even though he's a priest now
13:35Yeah
13:36You gotta find a way
13:37To get it done
13:38There's no
13:39The only time there's excuses
13:41Is if you have a mental disability
13:43Then
13:45Otherwise there's no excuse
13:46If you're pure
13:48Abused
13:48I was abused
13:49Abandoned
13:50And neglected
13:51And I still made something of myself
13:53So that's why
13:54I tell people
13:56There's no excuse
13:58Prejudice
13:59Yes
13:59Discrimination
14:00Yes
14:00Poverty
14:01Yes
14:01Drugs
14:02Yes
14:02Domestic
14:03For example
14:03I always feel like
14:04Forster care
14:06People always blame
14:06Forster care system
14:07It's not the
14:08Forster care system
14:10The forster care system
14:11Is made up of all
14:12The ills of society
14:13The forster care
14:14Represents the ills of society
14:15You look at the
14:16Forster care system
14:17That's our society
14:18If you look
14:18Reflect back on that
14:19You'll see
14:20It's not their fault
14:21It's the system
14:23Give people the resources
14:25Keep them
14:25Don't put them in force
14:26To get
14:26Keep them at home
14:27And give them the resources
14:28Give them the resources
14:29Keep them intact
14:30With their family
14:31That's my belief
14:33Wow
14:33I'm sorry
14:34No, no, no
14:36It's fine
14:36You know
14:37You've gone through
14:38So many ups and downs
14:39Right
14:40I was sexually abused too
14:45And that's why
14:46I'm not married today
14:47Because I've tried
14:48Relationships
14:48Girls
14:49Every time I went out
14:50When studying
14:50It always fell through
14:52And I realize now
14:53I should have went to therapy
14:55In my time
14:56I played football
14:57It's never too late
14:59Well, it was mancho
15:00I was mancho
15:03But now I realize
15:04Now I should have went to therapy
15:05I should have went to therapy
15:07Because I was abused
15:07I kept it quiet for years
15:09I even tell the Fordham place
15:11I never told anybody
15:12I was in institutions
15:13They were shocked
15:14Because
15:15I didn't want sympathy
15:16I don't like people
15:17Feeling sorry for me
15:19And so I kept it a secret
15:20And so one day
15:21I said
15:22You know what
15:22You've got to help
15:23You've got to tell your story
15:24To help people
15:25You've got to help people
15:26Tell your story
15:26And the kids on the team
15:28Were shocked
15:28For 70
15:29They all went
15:30What?
15:31You were
15:31What?
15:32Yeah
15:32How come you didn't tell us?
15:34Because I don't want no sympathy
15:36Sympathy
15:36We would have worked harder for you
15:38Wow
15:38We would have worked harder for you
15:40So I mean
15:41I didn't
15:42I kept it a secret
15:42Now I'm telling you
15:44You allowed me this opportunity
15:46To spread my message
15:48You can do it
15:49If I can do it
15:50You can do it
15:51Definitely
15:51Definitely
15:52Wow
15:52Wow
15:53We're going to take a second
15:54And go to a break
15:56But we'll be right back
15:57Don't you guys go anywhere
15:58My gosh
16:04Well I hope you're enjoying this show
16:06Oh my gosh
16:07I am so so very excited
16:08To have you here
16:094% of you
16:11The 96% that have watched over and over again
16:16And tuned into a lot of my shows
16:18Have not subscribed
16:20I have over 41,000 people here
16:23And that would overfill a stadium
16:25Which is amazing
16:26I never thought I could ever fill a stadium
16:28But for YouTube that's kind of a little 4%
16:33So if the 96% of you
16:36Oh my gosh
16:36There's so many people
16:37Would please take a moment
16:39And click the subscribe button
16:41I would be so grateful
16:42And back to the show
16:44Thank you
16:47I'm telling you
16:48Wow
16:49And I will do that
16:50To your show
16:51Thank you
16:52Thank you
16:53Thank you
16:54So I mean
16:54That is crazy
16:55Because I mean
16:56You know
16:56I don't
16:58And not to
16:59Not to say anything
17:00Evil or bad
17:02Or even like
17:03False
17:04I don't know
17:06Of any woman
17:07In my life
17:08That has not been
17:09Either raped
17:11Or molested
17:11Or both
17:13See
17:14See
17:14I don't know
17:16All of my friends
17:18All of them
17:19All of them
17:20They
17:21One or the other
17:22Or both
17:24Yeah
17:24It's
17:26It's sad
17:27Isn't it
17:27But there's services
17:29Out there for them
17:29I didn't realize
17:30That there are services
17:31Out there for them
17:32Yeah
17:32There are services
17:33Yeah
17:33And they need help
17:34To go to get
17:35People say
17:36Well go get service
17:36It's not easy
17:37To go get service
17:38They need help
17:39To go get the service
17:40Yeah
17:40They need to be motivated
17:42To go get the service
17:43Yeah
17:43Yeah
17:44Because it's hard
17:45It's not easy
17:46To admit that
17:47They're victims
17:48They're victims
17:48For example
17:49Many years
17:50I didn't realize
17:52I was blaming myself
17:53And people said
17:53No you were
17:54At 12 years old
17:55You were a victim
17:57I was ashamed
17:58And they said
17:59You shouldn't be ashamed
17:59It's not your fault
18:01An adult
18:02Befriended you
18:03And took you
18:04And abused you
18:05Oh my gosh
18:06That's terrible
18:07Well that's why
18:08Even the Catholic Church
18:10I left the church
18:11For 30 years
18:11And then one day
18:12I realized
18:13The church
18:14In fact
18:15They were my support
18:16The Catholic Church
18:17Was my support
18:17For 19 years
18:18They did a fantastic job
18:20And I left
18:21Then I realized
18:22It was an individual
18:23That snuck into the system
18:25He beat the system
18:26And snuck into the system
18:28So I couldn't blame
18:29So now I'm very heavily
18:30Involved with the church
18:30Because I realized
18:31The church didn't do it
18:32It was the individual
18:33People that do the abuse
18:35The pedophies
18:35They don't want
18:36It was not
18:36Not the church
18:37Any church
18:38You can't blame any church
18:39Whether it's Jewish
18:40Protestant
18:40Muslim
18:41You can't blame any church
18:43It's the individual people
18:44That make
18:45Do those terrible acts
18:46Yeah
18:47Yeah
18:48If you could do it today
18:50If you could go to therapy
18:51Have you gone to therapy since?
18:53No
18:53If you could go to therapy today
18:56What would you be looking for?
18:59Like for what?
19:01What is the residual
19:02Of what you went through
19:04That still remains today?
19:05Well what remains is that
19:07I have problems
19:08With relationships
19:10Intimacy
19:12Because I'm afraid of rejection
19:14That's the biggest fear
19:15I've been rejected all my life
19:17And that's what it is
19:18For 19 years
19:19That's what we never got
19:20For example
19:21A priest
19:21At the last place I was in
19:24Father Harris
19:25When he had a problem
19:26When I was in
19:27I was in
19:28A supervisor unit director
19:29He always came to me
19:30When he wanted to evaluate staff
19:31I just
19:32Father
19:32Why do you always come to me?
19:35He goes
19:35Well you made it realize
19:36Is that
19:37Because you were balanced
19:38From place to place to place
19:39From
19:40For 19 years
19:41You never build any relationship
19:43Long term relationship
19:44With anybody
19:44Yeah
19:45You have safety net
19:47You've got it
19:48And therefore
19:49You're very good
19:50In judging people
19:51And very perceptive
19:53In judging people
19:53That's why
19:54That's why when I met you
19:55Two days ago
19:56We connected right away
19:58Yeah
19:59Because my gut
20:00I'm not trying to
20:01Win points here
20:02But we
20:03We hit it off
20:04Yeah we did
20:06I felt
20:06I'm not even nervous
20:08Look I'm talking to
20:09How many thousands of people
20:10I'm not even nervous
20:11Because of you
20:12Because of you
20:13Aw thank you
20:14You have that ability
20:15To connect
20:16Mm-hmm
20:17Well I think that you have
20:19That ability as well
20:20And I just think that
20:21It's a little bit easier
20:23For you
20:23When you connect
20:24With someone
20:24Because you have
20:25Something in common
20:26With
20:26Also someone who's
20:28Patient
20:29And understanding
20:30You know what I mean
20:31We all need that
20:33And rejection
20:34Hmm
20:35Rejection is not
20:37I always say that
20:38Rejection
20:39Literally isn't
20:40The rejection
20:41Of me
20:42If someone was
20:43To reject me
20:43I can't say you
20:44Okay
20:45But if I was
20:46In a situation
20:46And someone
20:47Rejected me
20:48It wasn't me
20:50They're rejecting
20:50It's an aspect
20:51Of myself
20:52That they lack
20:53That they're
20:54Either jealous of
20:55Or
20:56It's I'm not
20:58Really needed
20:59In their life
21:00At that moment
21:01In time
21:01So it's not
21:02A rejection
21:03Of me as a person
21:04It's a rejection
21:05Of me as
21:06The entity
21:07By which
21:08I represent
21:09That they don't
21:10Need at the moment
21:11Well it's
21:12So
21:12Well it's what you
21:14Said
21:14It's funny
21:15You say that
21:16It's funny
21:16You say it
21:16Because
21:17When I graduated
21:18From the school
21:18Of social work
21:19I got my state
21:20I got my state
21:21Licensed in
21:21Clinical
21:22Clinical social work
21:23And so I was
21:24A psychotherapist
21:25For five years
21:26And I worked
21:27In eastern
21:27New York
21:28Brooklyn
21:29A predominantly
21:29Black community
21:30To provide
21:31Mental health
21:31Services
21:32And I found
21:33Out
21:33Just what you
21:34Just said
21:34A lot of them
21:35Once I started
21:36Working
21:36Doing therapy
21:37With them
21:37They had a hard
21:38Time opening up
21:39Yeah
21:41Because one time
21:42Before the 60s
21:43Only the wealthy
21:44People went
21:44Seeing psychotherapists
21:46It was the
21:46You go to Manhattan
21:48They brag about
21:49Their therapist
21:50They walk all day
21:50About their therapist
21:51But in a lot of
21:53Communities
21:53They see it as a
21:54Weakness
21:54Yeah
21:56And I'm just
21:57A guilty
21:58I swear it's a
21:58Weakness
21:59So I used to
21:59Tell the patients
22:01The clients
22:02Say listen
22:03I know what
22:04You're going through
22:05Because I went
22:05Through it
22:05What?
22:06I went through
22:07It as a child
22:08I felt
22:09I don't need
22:10This stuff
22:10I felt
22:11There was
22:11A sign of
22:13Weakness
22:13And I realized
22:14I was wrong
22:14That's why
22:15You come in here
22:15You've taken
22:16The big step
22:17You're on your way
22:17To recovery
22:18And you're going
22:19To relapse
22:20Because relapse
22:20Is part of recovery
22:21You will relapse
22:23But you'll recover
22:24You'll do very fine
22:25You'll do well
22:25And it was great
22:26To see these people
22:27Go out
22:27And feel strong
22:28With themselves
22:28Because in fact
22:29One time
22:30A coach told me
22:31I think you make
22:32My plays weaker
22:34I said no no
22:35I said
22:35Coach to the contrary
22:36When they come to
22:37The weight room
22:37That's a therapy
22:38To you
22:40It's therapy
22:40And I build them up
22:41I don't build them down
22:42I stop them
22:43Where people are at
22:44And you build them up
22:44You don't build them down
22:45Right
22:46Yeah
22:47So that's what therapy does
22:48It brings people up
22:49It doesn't make them weak
22:50It would make you weak
22:51You stop them
22:52Where they're at
22:53Yeah
22:54Yeah
22:54And it's the same thing
22:55I try to do here
22:56You know
22:57Push people up
22:58And let them know
22:59That you know
23:00What you've done
23:01Is nothing short of a miracle
23:02You've gone back
23:04Into your past
23:05And you've grabbed things
23:06That you may
23:09Or may not want people
23:10To know
23:10But you put it out there
23:11Anyway
23:11Because there are people
23:12Out there that are suffering
23:13Just like you
23:14What do you suggest
23:15I mean
23:16Me personally
23:17I come from a huge family
23:19On my father's side
23:20And at a very old age
23:22I think some of our family members
23:24Were in their 90s
23:25And they had like
23:26Four and five year olds
23:27Go figure
23:28These are the guys
23:30And so I
23:31I personally
23:32Don't ever think
23:33That there is ever a moment
23:35That a man cannot have a kid
23:36Or have a relationship
23:39Well that's a good example
23:40But you know what it is
23:41I'm setting my life
23:43For example
23:44Because my first book
23:46And the newspapers
23:48Family found me
23:50My brothers and sisters
23:51Reached out to me
23:53And I said
23:53I'm sorry
23:54I want nothing to do with you
23:55Don't take it personal
23:56Wow
23:57I've already said in my life
23:59I'm very busy right now
24:00I'm very happy right now
24:04Just so you know
24:05College kids
24:06I work with
24:06High school kids right now
24:08And I'm happy as can be
24:09And they were shocked
24:11I said
24:11I don't need you
24:12I don't need them
24:13They said
24:15Don't blame us
24:16For what our mother and father did
24:17I said
24:18I'm not blaming you
24:19It's just that
24:20I have no relationship with you
24:21I never had no relationship
24:21With my parents
24:22I didn't even know them
24:23And they accepted
24:24They reached out to me
24:25Just so you know
24:26A couple of years
24:27After the first book
24:27Everybody calls you
24:28I said
24:29I'm sorry
24:29I have no interest
24:30I'm very direct
24:31No interest
24:33Well could it be
24:35I'm very contented
24:36Okay so I come from
24:38A similar kind of
24:39Relationship aspect
24:41With my family
24:42And because I didn't
24:43Grow up with my brother
24:44Well I grew up with
24:45My younger brothers
24:46But my older brother
24:47And my older sisters
24:48I didn't grow up with them
24:51So I had no idea
24:52They even existed
24:53Until we found each other
24:55And when we found each other
24:58I reached out to them
24:59And then they reached back
25:01And then now we have
25:02A relationship
25:03It wasn't easy though
25:05Because I didn't know them
25:07I didn't build that
25:09Relationship with them
25:10When I was young
25:11But I wanted to
25:14Not have regrets
25:15At the end of my life
25:18As to knowing what I
25:21Could have had
25:22Or knowing them now
25:24And getting to know
25:26My nieces and nephews
25:28Which I have a lot of
25:29And I think for me
25:31For me
25:33Not for you
25:34But for me
25:35Okay because I can't
25:36Talk for you
25:37But for me
25:37It was
25:39It was a
25:41It was a sad moment
25:43Because we had never
25:44Been introduced
25:44By my dad
25:47But it was a happy moment
25:49Because I can call them
25:52And be like
25:54Hey sis what's up
25:55I love you
25:56You coming down
25:57I'm going up
25:58You know
25:58We visit
25:59I got my nieces
26:00And nephews in my life
26:03It's not the same
26:04Don't get me wrong
26:05If we had grown up together
26:08But I think we've wasted
26:10Enough time apart
26:13That we can't
26:14Make up for it
26:16But we can definitely
26:16Continue our lives together
26:18So for me
26:19That was my decision
26:20That I made
26:21With my elder brothers
26:23And sisters
26:24And I am the youngest girl
26:25In the family
26:26And I found that out
26:27And I was like
26:28Wow
26:28That's amazing
26:30But see
26:31But see
26:31In regards to that
26:33What I've been very fortunate
26:34Was I have
26:35Godchildren
26:35I have five
26:36Six, seven
26:36Godchildren
26:37They become my
26:39What you would call
26:39My niece and nephews
26:40They become my
26:41My children
26:42So it's funny you say that
26:43Because they actually
26:45Fulfilled that role
26:45I know them
26:46Since they were born
26:47And now they're
26:4821, 20, 19
26:49Right
26:50And they're African American
26:51They're part African American
26:52Part Spanish
26:53But I know them
26:54Since they were babies
26:56They're my
26:57What you would call
26:58My nieces and nephews
26:59So it's almost
27:00Like the same scenario
27:01They've taken the place
27:02Of my biological families
27:03Yeah
27:04And that's it
27:05So I already took
27:06Care of that need
27:07Because they're my
27:08They're my family
27:09Right
27:10Right
27:10I understand
27:11What you're saying
27:12But they're my family
27:13No I can't
27:14I am not trying
27:15To put anything on you
27:16Everybody
27:17The whole thing was
27:19Me personally
27:20Saying that
27:21Was because
27:21Everybody has
27:23Something that's
27:24Going to work for them
27:25And that's what
27:26I was thinking
27:27That your book
27:27Would be about
27:28Why not find a way
27:30Find a way
27:30So you found your way
27:33By having your
27:34Godchildren
27:35As your nieces and nephews
27:37And your family members
27:38And making sure
27:39That that aspect
27:40Of your life
27:41Is covered
27:42And I found a way
27:44By actually
27:45Going ahead
27:46And connecting
27:47With my brothers
27:48And sisters
27:49And making sure
27:50That and that was
27:50My decision
27:51And your decision
27:53Was different
27:53You know what I mean
27:54But it doesn't make it
27:55Right or wrong
27:56Because
27:57That's why
27:57We still have family members
27:59And we still have loves
28:01And we still have children
28:02And we still have a part
28:04In a family structure
28:06That completes us
28:08Well that's why
28:08That's why this book
28:09Is fantastic
28:10That's why I thought
28:11That book was yeah
28:12Why not find a way
28:14Exactly
28:15People tell me now
28:16They read my first book
28:17They love this book better
28:18I said why
28:19You give good examples
28:20Concrete examples
28:21Particularly concrete examples
28:23They need
28:24They need motivation
28:24Inspiration
28:25And your book does that
28:26It's amazing that
28:27It's for anybody
28:28With a heartbeat
28:29It sounds
28:30It's for anybody
28:31With a heartbeat
28:32Because when you read
28:33This book
28:33They go
28:33They're going to see
28:34People of all walks of life
28:35Black, white, yellow, green
28:36You name it
28:37Male, females
28:38Young, old
28:39They all found
28:40The way to do it
28:41Yeah
28:41There's no excuses
28:44The key thing
28:45Is resiliency
28:46Faith
28:46You have that faith too
28:48I'm really
28:49Played with my
28:50With my faith
28:51Faith helps me
28:52Get through it too
28:53My church gets
28:54Tremendously
28:55But
28:57Resiliency
28:58Determination
28:58Yeah
28:59Passion
29:01I have my beliefs
29:02Find people
29:03I always said
29:04Find people
29:04My ten beliefs
29:05Find people
29:07That are smarter than you
29:07You can learn
29:09From people
29:09That are smarter than you
29:10I don't mean just college
29:11Anybody that's smaller
29:12You can learn
29:13From people
29:13That are smarter than you
29:14Associate with people
29:15That are successful
29:17Doesn't matter who they are
29:18What they're doing
29:19As long as they're successful
29:20And then struggle
29:21We all have struggles
29:23Everybody has struggles
29:24Everybody has obstacles
29:25Everybody has obstacles
29:26To overcome
29:27And we find a way
29:28To overcome those obstacles
29:29I always found a way
29:30Just so you know
29:31I always found a way
29:32When I wanted a job
29:34I worked in district attorney's office
29:36I was a detective
29:37Investigator
29:37I always wanted to be
29:38In law enforcement
29:39But I had bad eyes
29:41And then I found a way
29:42I thought
29:42Okay
29:43The DA's office
29:44Was less restricted
29:45As far as vision
29:47So I was able to find
29:50Law enforcement
29:51With the DA's office
29:53And as a result of that
29:54I made an arrest
29:55They hit the New York Daily News
29:57And that's when I found my family
29:58For the first time
30:01Because if I didn't make that arrest
30:02In Brooklyn
30:03I would have never found my family
30:04Right
30:05But I found a family
30:07That's beautiful
30:07And now I have a cousin
30:09Yes
30:10All before it was an arrest
30:11I was in the DA's room
30:12He called me up
30:13And he goes
30:13Please don't hang up
30:14Please don't hang up
30:14Please don't hang up
30:15I made me your uncle
30:17I said what?
30:18Oh my gosh
30:20So then I hung up
30:22I took his number
30:23And I called the social worker
30:24That had me when I was a kid
30:26I said
30:26Elena Corolla
30:27I said
30:27You got to help me
30:27What?
30:28I have a person
30:29He might be a nut
30:30But he called me
30:31And said
30:31He saw my picture
30:32In the newspaper
30:33This arrest
30:34And he might be
30:35No he's not a nut
30:36And he's not
30:36If I recollect
30:39You do have
30:40A family that was successful
30:42I said what?
30:44Meet him
30:44Go to a restaurant
30:46Meet him
30:46A neutral place
30:47And pay the bill
30:47To show him
30:48That you're independent
30:50So I called him back
30:51And said
30:51Mr. Rose
30:52I'll meet you
30:52In Queens
30:54New York
30:54Queens Boulevard
30:55I don't know if you've heard
30:55Of the restaurants
30:56Howard Johnson's
30:57Of course
30:57It used to be
30:58Howard Johnson's restaurant
30:58All over the country
30:59Of course
30:59No I know
31:00Yeah
31:01I said
31:02Oh wow
31:03I said
31:04I'll meet you
31:04Howard Johnson's
31:05In the Queens
31:07It's a neutral place
31:08For both for us
31:09I met him
31:10With his wife
31:11With a mink stall
31:12And his
31:12All dressed up
31:14And I just had
31:14A plain old shirt
31:15And tie
31:16And he hugged me
31:17And he's crying
31:18And I'm going
31:19What's his problem
31:20What's his problem
31:20You know
31:21And I had no emotions
31:23At all
31:23You know what I mean
31:23I had no emotional feelings
31:24But over time
31:27I started to trust him
31:28It took me a long time
31:28That I told him
31:29Be patient
31:30It's going to take me
31:30A long time
31:31To trust you
31:31I didn't tell him
31:32Because I was abused
31:33Because I'm God
31:34You know
31:35I'm always God
31:36When you're abused
31:37I didn't go for therapy
31:38As you said
31:38I should go for therapy
31:40I'm always on God
31:42Yeah
31:42Well see
31:44That's the thing
31:44And that's why
31:46Thank you very much
31:46No
31:47No problem
31:48I mean
31:50If people don't buy this book
31:51They're nuts
31:51Well see
31:52That's the thing
31:53It's like
31:53It's beautiful
31:55Because
31:55You know
31:56You see the
31:57Resilience of a human nature
31:59You see
32:00The
32:01The things
32:02That
32:02You know
32:03Yeah
32:04So that you're not
32:05Feeling guilty
32:05Hey
32:06You have to make decisions
32:07In your life
32:07That are better for yourself
32:09In the long run
32:10And
32:11And some people won't
32:12Like those decisions
32:13But that doesn't matter
32:14Because those are your decisions
32:16And you have to live with them
32:17And no one else really
32:18Is responsible for your own decisions
32:21You know
32:21They have to respect that
32:22I
32:24I absolutely love it
32:26Why not find a way
32:27What kind of suggestions
32:29Do you give to people
32:30When they find themselves
32:32In similar situations
32:33Like you
32:34In the book
32:35And why not find a way
32:36What is your advice
32:41My advice
32:42Is to sit back
32:43And reflect on
32:45What you want to accomplish
32:46When you overwhelm
32:47Sit down
32:48And just reflect
32:50And write down
32:50Things
32:50What you'd like to do
32:53Write down
32:55Not a whole sentence
32:56What do I want to be
32:58What do I want to do
32:58And you might not be sure
32:59I went to college
33:00I didn't know what I wanted
33:01You write down
33:02And that gives you hope
33:03You start writing things down
33:05And then figure out
33:06How do I go about doing that
33:08That's the key
33:09How do I go about doing that
33:11What do I do
33:12Do I go to the internet
33:13Do I go to the library
33:14Do I go to the library
33:16Do I talk to friends
33:17Do I talk to the loved ones
33:17How do you
33:18How do I go about
33:20Accomplishing what I want to accomplish
33:22That is the key
33:23Once you know what you want to do
33:25Then the next question is
33:26How do I go about
33:27Finding out how to do
33:29Whatever I want to do
33:30Whether it's research
33:31Whether it's computers
33:31Whether it's talking to people
33:33Talking to loved ones
33:33Talking to people
33:34That's the key
33:35Is reach out to people
33:38Don't hold them in
33:39Reach out to people
33:40That can help you
33:42That's why the book
33:43Everybody reach out
33:44You can help them
33:46Everybody needs help
33:49Even your production company
33:51You're always moving
33:54To make it better
33:55And better
33:55And better
33:55Keep raising the bar
33:56Never
33:57Never be satisfied
33:59I hate to say that
34:01Never be satisfied
34:02The day you're satisfied
34:03You're dead
34:04Because the day you're satisfied
34:05Someone else
34:05Is ready to take your place
34:06That's right
34:07You're not irritable
34:10That's right
34:11Exactly
34:11And then pray
34:12In your own way
34:13Pray
34:14Pray to God
34:14For advice
34:16For assistance
34:17Because God is there for you
34:18God is there for you
34:19In this country
34:20We need more
34:22Christians
34:23In our lives
34:24We do
34:25We've gotten away from it
34:26Well because they say
34:28The reason being
34:28Is that
34:29The more industrialized
34:30Our country is
34:31The less religious
34:31It is
34:32The less industrialized
34:33Our country is
34:34The more religious
34:34There are
34:35There's a certain truth
34:36To that
34:36Yeah
34:37But there's no
34:38But there's no
34:39But there's no
34:39Excuse
34:40No
34:40No there is not
34:42Wow
34:42Oh
34:43I always tell you
34:44Oh here's another word
34:46How do you advise
34:47To people
34:48Never say the word
34:49Can
34:50Take the word
34:51Can't
34:51At the vocabulary
34:52Because when you say
34:53Can't
34:53It means you won't
34:54You're saying you won't
34:56Yeah
34:56Always say the word
34:57Can't
34:58When I hear can't
34:59I go stop
35:00I don't want to hear can't
35:02Because can't
35:03Means you won't
35:04So no more
35:05That's the key word
35:07Go away today
35:07Don't say can't
35:09To anybody
35:10Because that means you won't
35:11Well I can't say
35:13Enough about your book
35:15Thank you
35:15Thank you
35:17I have to say
35:19That this is beautiful
35:20I mean I love it
35:21Why not find a way
35:24Is revolutionary
35:25It's you know
35:26People don't realize
35:27What you're saying
35:28I think
35:29And if you think about it
35:30Why not find a way
35:31Why not find a way
35:32Around this
35:33Why not find a way
35:34Through here
35:35Why not find a way
35:36To solve
35:37Or even heal
35:38And to go about
35:40Your life
35:41With no regrets
35:44That's beautiful
35:45Exactly
35:46You just said
35:47You're better than me
35:48That's exactly
35:49What it is
35:50And God bless you
35:51Thank you very much
35:52Thank you very much
35:53I really have
35:54From the bottom of my heart
35:55I really appreciate it
35:56Thank you
35:57Thank you
35:57We're going to go ahead
35:58And put that book
36:00Go ahead
36:02Yeah we're going to go ahead
36:03It said Amazon
36:04Amazon Barnes and Nobles
36:05That's what I would say
36:07And it's only
36:09And I told the publisher
36:11Only $15
36:13I wanted to make
36:14I wanted so everybody
36:15Can afford it
36:16Yeah
36:16To be honest with you
36:17Every book that gets sold
36:18Gets so much money
36:19I get
36:20Yeah
36:21A dollar
36:21Every book that gets sold
36:23I get $1.85
36:24So I'm not looking
36:25To make money
36:26Well then that would mean
36:27You would need
36:28At least 2 million people
36:31To make some kind of
36:33Good standby
36:34And let's travel
36:35The world money
36:37But it's more important
36:38For me to get my story
36:39It's more important
36:40For me to get my story
36:40It's more important
36:41For me to get my story out
36:43That's what I want to say
36:43It's very much
36:44Yeah
36:44To help people
36:46Help people
36:46Help people
36:47Yeah
36:47And that's exactly
36:48What I say
36:49You know
36:50It's beautiful
36:51Why not find the way
36:52It's available on
36:53Barnes and Nobles
36:54As well as Amazon
36:55We're going to have
36:56The Amazon link
36:57In the description box below
36:58So it'll be easy
36:59For you guys to find it
37:00You know
37:01When you make a decision
37:02For yourself
37:02Just like my friend
37:03Edward has made
37:04A decision for himself
37:06It's your decision to make
37:07It's no one else's
37:08Decision to make
37:09And you have to make
37:10It for yourself
37:10Make sure that you're
37:12Going to go
37:12Be able to live
37:13With that decision
