00:00All right, let's get started. How about the story in college basketball this season?
00:03Miami, Ohio beats Eastern Michigan 74-64 last night. Why is that the top story? Because they
00:10are 28-0 on the season. They're the only undefeated team in Division I left. Incredible
00:18season for them. The MAAC conference is coming up. They'll need three more wins to finish a
00:23perfect 31-0 in the regular season. Western Michigan, Toledo, and Ohio, those are the next
00:29three games. There have been just 20 undefeated teams that have entered the NCAA basketball
00:32tournament in the history of college basketball, and just three of those have done so this
00:37century, just four since 1980. Gotta start talking about this team as we head toward March.
00:43Meanwhile, at the scouting combine, the National Football League could be looking at a quarterback
00:47carousel yet again. As of right now, Kyler Murray looks to be on the outs with the Cardinals,
00:52but who really knows? Because there are new reports that are contradicting the general
00:56manager who says that Kyler Murray has not had extensive discussions about what will happen
01:01with him in the future. Have to stay tuned. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins, as of right
01:05now, have that guy that you see right there, Tua Tungvaluwa, under contract. If they release
01:10him, it would produce an NFL record $99.2 million dead cap hit. I said this before, and I'll say
01:17it again. Doesn't matter. Salary cap goes up. We make a big deal about nothing. But here
01:21is the new general manager, John Eric Sullivan on potentially that move that could say farewell
01:27to Tua. Yeah. So we're evaluating the entire roster, right? As it pertains to Tua, you know,
01:35I know that question is coming, so I'll just get ahead of the curve. You know, we've had
01:40conversations with Tua and his representation. Everything's on the table, including the potential
01:46of a trade. We don't know which way that's going to go. There's a lot of different factors
01:51at play, a lot of conversations being had. But evaluating the roster, you know, Quinn
01:58did a nice job towards the end of the year. Excited about what's ahead for him. You know,
02:04Tua, I thought, even though things didn't go well at the end of the year, did some good
02:09things along the way. And it's my job to infuse competition into that room along with every
02:15other room as we go down the road. Lots of rumors about Malik Willis may be signing with
02:20Dolphins, Green Bay Packers backup quarterback. We'll see. Again, pre-HC doesn't start for
02:25a few weeks. Meanwhile, Sean Payton, elite coach, have to say that, right? In the National
02:29Football League has been calling plays as long as he's been head coach, whether it's
02:32been with the Saints or the Broncos. Payton telling reporters yesterday for the first time
02:36someone else will do it. In this case, it will be offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
02:40Um, I know that's like, man, are you going to give up play calling? And I would only do
02:45that if I felt like it would help our team. Um, I'll still be involved with what we do
02:50offensively, just like what we do defensively. But I do think, um, he has a gift. I think
02:56he's, uh, real sharp. I'm glad he's on our staff. Um, typically any decision we make
03:03like that or is, is to benefit our team. Um, so I'm, I'm, listen, I'm looking forward
03:10to it. I challenged him in the off season prior to that preseason game. He did a good
03:15job. Um, but I think it'll, it'll help us. And certainly, uh, I wouldn't do if I didn't
03:22think it was going to help our team win. At this, you get to a point where you're, you're
03:26focused strictly on improving your team any way you can.
03:31Meanwhile, in the National Basketball Association last night, kind of a slugfest, honestly, between
03:36the Cavs and the Knicks. Cavs were four and a half point favorites. They end up winning
03:40by 15. Donovan Mitchell had 23 points in this game. And obviously, Kenny Atkinson happy to
03:46just get a win. He can against anybody. But in this case, it could be a team that he sees
03:50again in the playoffs.
03:52I mean, it's nice having Evan back. You know, that starting lineup is pretty good defensively.
03:57You got Evan, Dean, and J.A. Um, and it's been a great lineup for us historically. So, I think
04:06that. And then you got, now you got Dennis, you know, who we can put on like Brunson. So,
04:11you know, you got Dean, a big guy that can guard him. And the changeup is kind of putting
04:16Dennis with the full court pressure. So, um, listen, a lot, most of the time, this is
04:22personnel. We've added, um, two really good defenders and Dennis and Keyon. I think that
04:28that helps.
04:29We weren't good. Tonight was probably one of the first nights in a while that I didn't
04:36think, uh, we were on a string defensively. Meaning that when the ball moved, all five
04:41guys moved and they made us pay for it. Um, so tough loss, ugly game overall. And we got
04:48to get back and figure out what we need to do to, uh, get a win on Friday.
04:53Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics take care of business last night against the Phoenix Suns,
04:5897 to 81. Celtics were five and a half point favorites. Derek White had 22 points, eight
05:03rebounds and eight assists. Now in the game last night that went down to the wire, some
05:08funny comments were made after the game on this one. First of all, the magic, they end
05:13up beating the Lakers 110 to 109. And the Lakers were six and a half point favorites. Wendell
05:18Carter had the game winner. Now, Luka Doncic had a chance to win it.
05:21At the end of the game, but he passed the ball to LeBron who didn't knock down a three
05:27and LeBron after the game said, well, you know, I thought Luka was going to take the
05:31shot, but first let's hear from Jamal Mosley. And then we'll hear from JJ Redick on what
05:35transpired. I thought the group did a tremendous job of not letting shot making or missing
05:40impact our defense. Um, obviously we had some mistakes during this game, but our guys stayed
05:45the course the entire game and you know, our guys being able to step up big Paula was, was
05:49gigantic for us tonight. Um, his, his, his shot making, his playmaking, uh, him rebounding
05:55the basketball. Those were big plays for us tonight. Guys just found ways to have winning
05:58plays throughout this game. You go into this game, you know, with their, with their size
06:03and, and their, their strength, you know, that's, you know, it's going to be a rock fight.
06:07And, um, you know, we, we lose the scoring opportunity by, by eight, you know, you know,
06:12one point game. Like it, that's, that's, that's the game. We had more turnovers in them. Um,
06:17and they got more offensive rebounds than us.
06:19No, Shea Gilgis, Alexander last night. No Jalen Williams. Doesn't matter. Thunder win
06:24again, 116 to 107 over the Toronto Raptors. OKC one and a half point favorites. Kacen Wallace
06:29had 20 points in the game last night. As I mentioned in college basketball, number 21,
06:34Miami, Ohio. They went again, 74 to 64. They're undefeated heading into the final three games
06:39of the season and then the conference tournament. Uh, Caleb Foster had the big game for Duke
06:44last night. They crushed Notre Dame 100 to 56, although Cam Boozer did have 24 points and
06:4913 rebounds in this one. But head coach John Shire in the blowout went out of his way to give
06:55props to Foster. Uh, both these guys to, to my left and right, obviously, uh, Caleb, uh, you
07:02know, got itself to a really good start, hit a couple of threes, his defense throughout.
07:06I look at the decision-making. I think that was big for us tonight. And then, you know,
07:09this guy just, you know, he's doing everything assists, rebounds, scoring it, taking care of
07:14the ball, fouling, you know, he's, he's, uh, uh, we can't, we can't have that happening.
07:21Uh, but listen, uh, really proud of this one. We're going to, uh, enjoy this tonight. Uh,
07:27know there's a lot more we can do and have to do and keep learning and keep growing.
07:32Meanwhile, also in college basketball last night, Arizona seems to be back on track. They
07:36win 87 to 80 over Baylor. They're the number two ranked team in the country. They were seven
07:41and a half point favorites in that game. Also, as the National Hockey League gets set to start
07:46back up after Team USA won the goal over Team Canada, Cindy Crosby, future Hall of Famer,
07:51injured in the Olympics, is not going to play for approximately a month and play resumes for
07:57the Penguins. All right, welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid. Great to have Sam McQuillen
08:01in the house from Legal Sports Report as we go over the very latest on sports betting and
08:06prediction markets. It's been a hot topic once again for us this year. For those of you unfamiliar,
08:11prediction markets, uh, launched in sports over the last couple of years and there's just a lot
08:15of legalese going on right now to see if these folks are going to be able to stay around and
08:20operate and if they're a big part of our broadcasting and financial future, to be honest.
08:25All right, Sam is with us here. All right, so Sam, a lot of the reporting that you've done
08:29over at Legal Sports Report seemingly indicating states fighting off prediction markets to make
08:36them pay taxes, make them join the rest of these sports betting operations and war and winning a lot.
08:42But I see here the state of Tennessee may be one of the first that could be going the other
08:47way
08:47in favor of the prediction market. Tell us more.
08:51Yeah, as you mentioned, Craig, there's about, uh, 10 different lawsuits playing out between states
08:57and prediction market companies like Talshi and Polymarket. And again, like you mentioned,
09:01mainly trying to get these companies, what they are offering, these financial, uh, investing services,
09:07uh, that are on the back of sports pretty much, uh, trying to get those on the same page as
09:13their
09:13licensed sports betting partners. You know, the states legalize sports betting for a reason.
09:18They have licensing processes. They have this robust paperwork and, you know, uh, reporting that you
09:24have to do with the state commission, uh, with, you know, all this support system to keep game
09:29integrity, make sure people are betting in the proper age. Uh, right now, prediction markets really
09:33are not subject to that. So, uh, that's why Tennessee is, you know, one of several states that's
09:38suing to get them to become subject to that. They sent a cease and desist order to Kalshi,
09:43which has resulted in this lawsuit that's now playing out. And the biggest development here
09:48is this week, a federal judge in Tennessee ruled, uh, in Kalshi's favor, uh, granting them a
09:54preliminary injunction. So what this does basically is it's a temporary win for Kalshi. It means Kalshi
10:00can keep operating in the state of Tennessee while the lawsuit continues to play out. They haven't had,
10:05you know, all the proceedings, the legal proceedings play out in this lawsuit so far.
10:09It's still ongoing. We don't know exactly when it might be settled. Like you mentioned,
10:13there's a number of other lawsuits where judges have ruled kind of in the opposite in Nevada.
10:18Uh, they did not grant Kalshi's preliminary injunction. Basically the arguments Kalshi's
10:22made here is to offer sports betting or it's, you know, uh, sports prediction markets rather
10:28like Tennessee is asking, it would have to change this platform where it is only offering a Tennessee
10:35exchange different from its entire other business, which Kalshi has argued, you know,
10:39would damage it materially. Uh, interestingly enough, the court also ruled, um, that federal
10:44law likely override state law, which is kind of the big issue here is, you know, are these contracts
10:50allowed under federal derivatives law or are they, you know, stepping on or encroaching on state sports
10:56betting law? It's quickly boiled into a state's rights versus federal issue with a lot of folks
11:01asking the CFTC to provide clarity. It obviously comes, you know, last week we talked about the
11:06CFTC talking about, they're going to really defend, uh, these lawsuits and the, you know,
11:12the right of, uh, federal law in this, you know, in this whole oversight versus state law. Uh, so
11:19bottom line is, you know, it's a small win for Kalshi to keep operating in Tennessee, but down the
11:23road, uh, when we talk about the Supreme court, maybe other appellate courts where the fate of
11:28where the prediction markets are indeed sports betting or not ultimately is decided, we'll be
11:32looking back to these decisions made earlier in these cases, you know, again, Nevada and New Jersey
11:37kind of ruled the opposite Tennessee ruling a different way. So it just goes to show you how
11:41kind of mixed the whole bag is here and how much uncertainty persists and kind of how much more time
11:47there is before we get a real resolution. Uh, but certainly an interesting development in Tennessee,
11:51and we'll keep watching what happens in the myriad of other States as well.
11:55I thought that there was some sports pushback about this one. I didn't see this one coming
11:59to read the story, by the way, legal sports reports, the CFTC, Sam seemingly. And again,
12:05I don't mean to make light of this, but you know, you've heard about folks doing dead pools before
12:10trying to predict and, uh, you know, celebrities would pass away. Uh, I mean, I've thought that
12:16was kind of morbid, but let's not deny it goes on across the country. CFTC does not want
12:22these prediction markets being involved in harm or death. That makes sense, but I don't know. I
12:30mean, it seems like the prediction markets are pushing back on everything. Are they going to
12:33push back here? Yeah. Getting back to the core issue of prediction markets is there's really no
12:40one regulating it right now. The CFTC is supposed to, but the CFTC is like historically understaffed.
12:47It's probably has even less staff than we know about and underfunded, certainly. And the argument
12:52here for the folks who want regulation is, Hey, the, the federal regulator really is not the federal
12:57regulator because there's no one there. So one of the main issues is these prediction markets can
13:02just offer contracts on seemingly whatever they want by self-certifying. We talked about a few months
13:07ago, the issue, the NCAA had with Kalshi moving towards offering an event contract market on the
13:13decision of transfer portals or a college transfer decisions, which is supposed to be split, uh,
13:18explicitly prohibited. Now, death is also supposed to be something you're not allowed to, uh, financially
13:24invest in on the outcome, or for that matter, you can't bet on it on, uh, at a casino or
13:30on a sports
13:31book for obvious reasons. But, uh, six democratic Sanders this week wrote a letter to the CFTC asking
13:36that they really clarify what those rules are, uh, with death contracts. They cited, uh, the NASA
13:43Artemis, uh, two mission. You could bet on the outcome of that mission being a failure. So senators
13:48kind of, you know, worried, are we betting on astronauts dying? Uh, they mentioned the, the
13:54Russia Ukraine conflict where you can bet on the outcome. So are you betting on that technically war
13:59there? And they also, uh, mentioned, um, uh, Nicholas Maduro who was ousted, um, you know,
14:05famously very recently, um, in Venezuela. And are you betting on, if you're betting on him to be
14:11ousted, are you betting on him to be assassinated? You know, what are the outcomes? How are those
14:15contingent upon life and death? Um, quite explicitly, the Commodities Exchange Act states that you can't
14:20bet on terrorism or you can't invest in assassination or war. So there are categories that are explicitly
14:26prohibited, but because some of these markets can be decided by a death or a fate or a terrorism act
14:33or something, these senators basically want, uh, clarity from the CFTC. Now CFTC has largely not
14:38really done anything with prediction markets, which have just boomed over the past year. Their,
14:43their volume has gone up like a hundred times since the year before, mainly on the back of sports.
14:49But recently the CFTC did come out and say it's going to, you know, issue new rules. So this could
14:55be something that they take into account in that process. Uh, certainly no mention of sports,
15:00but again, because this is really transforming the way we talk about sports betting and just
15:04gambling law in general, it definitely relates. Uh, and it's definitely just more of Congress kind
15:09of scrutinizing this growing sector, which obviously more and more pushback is coming,
15:14but these lawsuits have to play out and we have to see what else happens. I'm sure this isn't kind
15:18of the last controversial thing we talk about with prediction markets. That's for sure.
15:22Probably, uh, the, not even the last this week when we check back with Sam on Friday. Okay. So
15:27in terms of sports betting, our story today is on Wisconsin. It seems like from what I'm reading
15:32here, Sam, there could be sports headed their way. Uh, the tricky part here is it does involve the
15:38tribal entities, which I'm familiar with here in Florida as well. Maybe it's something similar.
15:44Yeah. Wisconsin is a very similar market to Florida. Craig it's in in-person sports betting
15:50is legal, uh, with the tribe. So in Florida, they got to the point where they were able to
15:54keep sports betting and expand it by having online servers for online sports betting on tribal land. It's
16:01kind of the work around a lot of states have done. That's what Wisconsin is proposing here as well.
16:06The state assembly actually passed the bill this week, which would allow, uh, 11 state tribes to create,
16:12servers on their land that host, uh, online sports betting, partnering with apps,
16:17essentially allowing up to 11 sports betting apps to come in the state. Uh, the session actually ends
16:22March 19th though. So they're running out of time quickly to pass the bill. It's already passed the
16:26assembly. It needs to be heard in the Senate. It does have the support of governor, uh, Tony Evers,
16:31who's backing it. And the tribes seem to be on board as well as obviously it would give them most
16:35of the power, but there's still some Republicans in Congress that are a little wary of commercial
16:41operatives not being included. Obviously the fan duels, draft Kings, but MGMs of the world have
16:46a lot of lobbying influence with the states and, you know, prediction markets have really changed
16:50the game in terms of them not getting a cut of sports betting that's happening, uh, legally on
16:57those lands. So I imagine that would probably be a factor here as well, but Wisconsin, one of the few
17:01states this year, uh, where we could see betting go from in-person to expanding online. We'll have to see.
17:08And great stuff. As always, we'll check back Friday. I'm sure we'll have a new prediction
17:11markets discussion. Thanks for coming on. Yeah. Thanks Craig. You too.
