00:00Up here, winter doesn't arrive politely.
00:04It sneaks in, disappears, and comes back sideways.
00:08Slush freezes overnight into rutted ice.
00:13Rain falls on a cold road and becomes glass.
00:17This is the reality drivers face now.
00:20And yes, we at Nokian Tires have noticed.
00:24We've been building winter tires for decades.
00:28Changing winters aren't exactly news to us.
00:32Happens every year.
00:37Our goal has always been simple.
00:40Making the safest winter tires possible.
00:44But now, the winter changes faster.
00:47And that means the tires have to change too.
00:52We have always designed our tires to protect drivers, passengers,
00:57and the environment they move through.
01:00But winters aren't the same as they used to be.
01:03Drivers today meet road surfaces that shift constantly.
01:08Long, bare road stretches.
01:10Sudden freeze and thaw cycles.
01:13More wet asphalt than before.
01:16And that creates a challenge.
01:18The fact is that studded tires are still the champions on real ice.
01:25But studs bring two things nobody loves.
01:29Noise and road wear.
01:32Road wear?
01:33What's that?
01:35It's not very complicated.
01:36When a studded tire rolls on asphalt, each stud makes a tiny impact.
01:43Over time, these tiny, repeated hits erode the road surface,
01:48increase maintenance needs, and kick up fine particles.
01:52And yes, they also make noise.
01:56So something had to be done.
01:58Winter grip is not to be compromised.
02:00So we made it our mission to increase the ice grip that we're known for
02:03and to simultaneously reduce road wear and noise.
02:07The mission seemed impossible, even for us.
02:16But deep inside our test facilities, and sometimes far from them,
02:21one question endured.
02:23Could a tire adjust its grip as naturally as the winter adjusts itself?
02:30What if the tire could adapt its grip based on weather conditions?
02:42Inside the R&D center, the idea began to take shape.
02:48A tire that could sense the surface and react to its temperature change.
02:54A tire with two modes.
02:59Start mode on, start mode off.
03:03What this idea would mean is that during colder weather,
03:07the tire extends its studs,
03:09and in milder, it softens its footprint and draws them back.
03:14This design would enable the shift between maximum grip and minimal road wear.
03:20It works like this.
03:21The stud is anchored in the tread's cap layer.
03:25A middle base layer holds it stable under all loads.
03:28And the adaptive base compound reacts to temperature and adjusts the stud
03:34automatically.
03:36And of course we redesigned the studs.
03:40The double stud technology has been upgraded too.
03:43And every one of the 120 sizes are individually optimized.
03:47The most demanding challenge was the adaptive base compound.
03:52It had never been made before, not even close.
03:56It was difficult, but we brought it to life.
03:59I have some samples here.
04:04This unusual instrument is known as the stud hammer,
04:08which is a hammer fitted with a stud.
04:11Simple as it looks,
04:13it's the perfect way to show how the compound reacts to different temperatures.
04:17This sample piece has been cooled to minus 5 degrees Celsius,
04:22the kind of cold that turns roads to ice.
04:25At this temperature, the stud cannot retract into the compound,
04:30so the maximum ice grip stays uncompromised.
04:34Stud mode is on.
04:36When the compound warms up, everything changes.
04:40The compound softens.
04:42The stud sinks deeper.
04:44Stud mode is off.
04:54Once we built the full tire,
04:57the results were immediate.
04:59Even better ice grip.
05:00On the coldest surfaces,
05:02control and precision reached a new level.
05:05And when the weather turns milder and the roads are bare,
05:09the tire adapts autonomously,
05:12delivering comfort and reducing road wear.
05:15This is the Nokian Tires Hacapolita 01.
05:19Built by people who face the hard problems head on
05:23and don't do compromises.
05:26The Nokian Tires Hacapolita 01.
05:29The world's first winter tire with on-demand grip.
05:34From the inventors of the winter tire.
