Cricket analyst Fazeer Mohammed says the West Indies' display at this year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka mirrors that of 2024 in the Caribbean and USA.

This comes in the wake of the team's exit from the tournament after the men in maroon lost Sunday's Super Eight match in Kolkata.

While he's not taking away from the team's performances, Mohammed says the pitches were better for batting this time around than they were two years ago.

00:00The West Indies lost what was a high-scoring match against India, resulting in their exit from the T20 World
00:05Cup.
00:06Like 2024, the men in Maroon won five games and lost two, with the team being eliminated at the Super
00:128 stage.
00:13According to cricket analyst Fazir Mohamed, many would feel the Windies gave a good account of themselves because of the
00:19scores posted in their matches.
00:22However, he says the pitches in India and Sri Lanka are much better for scoring than they were in the
00:27West Indies and USA two years ago.
00:30As such, he doesn't see much of a difference in the team's display between 2024 and 2026.
00:35All in all, if you're looking at it on the bare bones of actual performance, it was exactly the same
00:42as 2024.
00:44The difference being that the free scoring that we saw from the West Indies batters in the main made it
00:50feel a lot better,
00:52even with the disappointment of losing to India, the fact that it went right down to the last over
00:57and required an excellent innings from Sanju Sampson makes it feel a lot better for the West Indies to go
01:03out once again at the Super 8 stage.
01:06So it's once more another tournament that the West Indies, since 2016, when they famously lifted the title for a
01:12second time,
01:13have now won 40-20 World Cups without making the semi-finals.
01:18Having said that, Mohamed feels there were still some encouraging signs based on the West Indies team's performances.
01:26But he says a lot of factors have to come into the equation if the Caribbean team is to shine
01:31on the world stage in years to follow.
01:33The fact now is whether or not the West Indies team will be able to stay together as a unit
01:39with all of the competing interests in the franchise format
01:42and really play enough cricket together to achieve that level of consistent excellence,
01:48which is really what is required for the West Indies to move forward and actually be a team that can
01:54not only get to the semi-finals,
01:56but to challenge for the title itself when it comes to the next World T20 competition.
02:02Mohamed says it's necessary for the West Indies to have both consistency and excellence if they are to be a
02:08force to be reckoned with.
02:09He says it's not good for one or two players to have a couple of good games here and there.
02:14It really has to be, when you're taking on teams of the calibre of India or South Africa in this
02:19tournament,
02:20who are really the powerful team in this competition so far, you really have to be on your A game
02:26almost all the time.
02:28And that's the same for any other elite competition.
02:31When you really think about it, in sprinting, athletics, in tennis, in football, it's just those marginal decisions,
02:39those marginal moments that really make the difference.
02:43And we often say, well, so-and-so is lucky, so-and-so had things going their way.
02:47Well, as it's often said, the more you practice, the more you train, the more you work on your game,
02:53the more you aspire towards consistent excellence, the luckier you tend to be.
02:58Time will tell what's in store for the West Indies when the tournament shifts to Australia and New Zealand in
03:032028.
03:05Then the newTON one, it is exploited.
