00:00For 2.50 East, here in Daytona, made of it, let's go!
00:05Inside, Seth Hamaker by 10, Hamaker with the hole shot.
00:09Slips right up the inside as the other guys fade out,
00:12and Joe Shimoda, second position right there behind Hamaker.
00:17This is going to be a battle.
00:20We talked about earlier, those runs coming out of the game,
00:23and Joe actually had this hole shot, I believe,
00:25but he hit one of those, front end popped up,
00:27he had to pull in the clutch,
00:28just allowed them to get out front.
00:30This is what he needed, Ricky.
00:31We know he has the speed, need that clean air right now.
00:34Oh, is that, yeah, Pierce Brown is trying to make a move on Adams early.
00:42Not wanting these guys, you just have to think,
00:44not wanting these guys in front to get too far out
00:46and gain that track position.
00:48It'll be tough to make up time, especially here early.
00:51Yamaha may have dominated competition so far this year,
00:54but it's Kawasaki and Honda out in front
00:56before you pick up the first Yamaha.
00:59Seth Hamaker, crash in qualifying,
01:03and crashed in his heat
01:04as he fends off Joe Shimoda, the SMX 250 world champion.
01:08That line was great by Joe Shimoda.
01:11He actually gained position on Seth Hamaker
01:15by going to the inside and jumping through there.
01:18Whoa!
01:19Yeah.
01:19Joe Shimoda almost tagged the rear wheel of Hamaker.
01:22And just what we talked about in heat race,
01:23how aggressive Joe looks coming off this injury.
01:26It's just getting better and better.
01:27Joe probably understands.
01:28He wants to get out front,
01:30hopefully avoid what happened last week,
01:31and I think if he does,
01:32he has the pace to start clear out,
01:34but it's going to be tough.
01:36Yeah, he looks like a completely different rider
01:38than last week and on a gnarlier track,
01:40but I actually, oh, look at this.
01:44That's Davies trying to get by Cody Shock.
01:46Now he's going to be on the inside here.
01:48He'll have the preferred line or the advantage.
01:52I like how Shock goes to the outside
01:54as he gets bottled up in there.
01:55Yeah, this traffic jam of teammates up ahead.
01:58One, two, three.
01:58Cody Shock's going to break up that line of teammates
02:02as he forces his way ahead of Davies.
02:04Tucks in behind.
02:05Championship leader Pierce Brown.
02:07Highest place.
02:09Monster Energy star Yamaha rider
02:10is Nate Thrasher in fourth.
02:12That's what I talked about, being patient.
02:14He slammed into that corner and lost that momentum.
02:17Otherwise, he might have had to pass.
02:18And, yeah, he knows he has to get out,
02:20get around him because those leaders
02:22are starting to pull away
02:23as we see Drew Adamum got around
02:25Nate Thrasher for third place.
02:27It's hard not to take that bait
02:29when you see out of your peripheral
02:31the guy going a little bit faster
02:33than you are trying to make a pass.
02:37Oh, this guy's teammates battling for it.
02:43Seth Hamaka aboard his Monster Energy Pro Circuit.
02:46Kawasaki top box leads the way.
02:47He was a championship contender
02:49last year, finished just three points shy
02:53of Tom Vial to win the 250 East Division.
02:56But he won a couple of times.
02:57It was a great season for him.
03:00After multiple setbacks in his career,
03:03last year was a phenomenal year for Hamaka.
03:06This is Drew Adams,
03:07the youngster working on the SMX World Champion.
03:11Talking about confidence,
03:12is he was able to get around Nate Thrasher
03:14and close in on Joe.
03:16So that heat race,
03:17just the confidence that he's getting,
03:19you've seen it on this racetrack.
03:21Joe makes that mistake,
03:22holds up Drew a little bit,
03:24and you can see his teammate out front
03:26pulling away.
03:27Looks like a lot of the riders,
03:28if they're kind of by their,
03:30by themselves,
03:31they go to the inside first
03:34on the split lane.
03:35But if they're behind someone,
03:37they automatically go to the outside there
03:39on the first right-hander.
03:41So keep your eye there
03:42later on in this race.
03:45Looking at the 18-year-old New Zealander,
03:47Cole Davies.
03:48Currently runs fifth.
03:50Chasing after his teammate.
03:52He's got a teammate behind as well.
03:55Good run by both those guys.
03:57Oh yeah.
03:57Felt Cole might make up some time,
03:59but wasn't able to.
04:00Pierce got through his wolf just as good.
04:02Yeah, he did.
04:03Great run for the both of them.
04:05And I was, I was with you.
04:06I thought for sure Cole
04:07was going to make up some ground
04:08on his teammate,
04:09but he wasn't able.
04:11Pierce is still hitting on,
04:12the only one actually I've seen
04:13in both classes,
04:14still tripling into that sand section.
04:16He didn't get it as clean.
04:18Slowed him down,
04:19but he can get that right.
04:21We saw what he did in that heat race.
04:25Davies was frustrated last week
04:27after going down on the opening lap,
04:29but his comeback,
04:30because he's coming back
04:31on his teammate here,
04:32Pierce Brown.
04:32His comeback from the back
04:34of the field
04:34to a top five result
04:36last weekend in Arlington.
04:37That was something else
04:38as he passes the points leader.
04:40I'm guessing he revved up
04:41his bike right there
04:42to try to scare Pierce Brown
04:44out of the line.
04:45Perfect execution.
04:46Way to look ahead
04:47and predict that that inside
04:49was going to slow down
04:50and keep that momentum
04:51around the outside.
04:53Really heads up.
04:54I mean,
04:54that could have been even costly.
04:56He almost ran into Pierce,
04:57but like you said,
04:58that heads up Roddy,
04:59he predicted and nice pass.
05:02Coming in on Drew Adams
05:04right in front of him.
05:05Yeah, he's not that far away.
05:06He's at the top of your screen.
05:07Watch the run he gets
05:08through the whoops.
05:08So, I mean,
05:09Cole Davies for his stature.
05:11I mean,
05:11he is absolutely incredible
05:13through the whoops.
05:14He almost had,
05:15I'd say 6-10 to 7-10 time gap
05:19on the whoops last week
05:20in Houston.
05:20That's an eternity
05:21in a regular Supercross race.
05:25If he hits this triple.
05:28Oh, Drew Adams got hung up
05:30there a little bit.
05:31Here comes Piz Brown
05:32on the inside.
05:34And Cole is definitely
05:36keeping his eyes up
05:37because he almost landed on Drew.
05:39If he would have jumped out,
05:40he would have landed on him.
05:41We saw Pierce get behind him,
05:42but still didn't lose
05:43too much time.
05:44Yeah, it'd be interesting.
05:45Remember, Cole made a pass
05:46on his teammate right here
05:47in this section coming up.
05:49Let's see if he does
05:49the same thing.
05:50He's going to try to do it.
05:52Using this outside
05:53to his advantage.
05:55We'll see that inside.
05:56Oh!
05:58It made up time.
05:59There you go.
05:59I'm assuming he's probably
06:00going to go to opposite.
06:01See if he can make Drew nervous,
06:03maybe rush that corner.
06:05Oh, Cole messed it up.
06:06So he lost some time,
06:07but you'll see that gap close in.
06:09And he was able to show
06:11Drew Adams the front wheel.
06:13And so now that's in Adams' head.
06:15He'll know that Davies is close enough.
06:17And then now, Dave,
06:18if you're Davies right here,
06:20and James, you've been in this position
06:21a million times,
06:22he knows he's faster than these guys.
06:23So the urgency is there for sure,
06:26and you want to have it,
06:27but at the same time,
06:29he can kind of let the pass come to him
06:31when he has that kind of speed advantage.
06:33Yeah, and the way Cole is,
06:34and if I'm in his position,
06:35as long as Seth isn't pulling away from me,
06:38I'm okay with that,
06:39but he does,
06:40that number 10 gets away,
06:41I'm going to have to start
06:42making these passes, JT.
06:44Yeah, they're definitely
06:45trying to get forward here,
06:46but you know,
06:47it's just another Drew Adams comment.
06:48He's talking about
06:48this is his favorite racetrack.
06:50You see Cole Davis
06:50make a huge mistake there.
06:52But, you know,
06:53Drew Adams so good,
06:54Pierce Brown, taller guy, AP.
06:56Do you think that there's
06:58a distinct advantage here at Daytona
07:00to having a taller height?
07:02Do you think they can get more leverage?
07:04Is that why these guys
07:05talk about Daytona
07:06being their favorite track,
07:07do you think?
07:08That's, I mean,
07:10listen, that's a,
07:11that's a really good question,
07:12and I'd love to ask him that.
07:14I think that the long legs
07:15and a track like this,
07:17JT, can work for you,
07:18but against you also,
07:20and some of these ruts,
07:21I've always been told that,
07:23listen, it ain't no secret,
07:23I'm a short man.
07:25So it, you know,
07:27ruts normally are better,
07:29especially in turn situations.
07:31So I think it's twofold.
07:33I really do.
07:33I love this place.
07:35Not short.
07:36So there you go.
07:38Worked out pretty well,
07:39didn't it?
07:407.22,
07:42we're at the halfway point
07:43on the clock
07:45in this second round
07:47of 2.50 East
07:48for 20.26.
07:50You're looking at Cole Davies,
07:51a quick reminder
07:51to stock up on Monster Energy
07:53drinks at 7.11.
07:56Really good form there
07:57through the whoops
07:58and
08:00still a lot of racing
08:01left here,
08:02Will,
08:02with half the race
08:03left to go.
08:05Yeah,
08:05Rick and James,
08:06I'm just kind of wondering
08:07what you're seeing
08:07Cole Davies now
08:08compared to what we saw
08:09in qualifying earlier
08:10because talking to him
08:11after those qualifying rounds,
08:13he was definitely
08:14not happy.
08:15He describes himself,
08:16he describes himself,
08:17excuse me,
08:17as overriding the fight.
08:19He did say he's not too
08:20worried about qualifying
08:21and he's a racer
08:22and that's main event
08:23time for him.
08:24But what do you see
08:25in him now?
08:25What did you see
08:26in him this morning?
08:27We're talking about
08:28a kid with, you know,
08:28comparatively little experience
08:30in this pro class.
08:30He hit a spot on.
08:32That's what I thought.
08:33I thought maybe
08:34he was trying a little
08:34too hard.
08:36And with this racetrack,
08:37as this slows down,
08:39I think it's going to help
08:40Cole because he's
08:40a very technical rider.
08:42So as the day goes on,
08:43he'll get better.
08:44But he was just
08:44overriding the racetrack.
08:45To me,
08:46it seems like
08:46when he gets close,
08:47sometimes he gets
08:48a little excited.
08:48Obviously,
08:49he wants to make that pass.
08:50Then he makes a mistake
08:51and loses that time.
08:52But clearly,
08:52he has his speed
08:53as he goes up the inside.
08:55Side by side
08:56with Drew Adams.
08:57Cole Davies
08:57moves into third.
08:59That was a really nice pass.
09:01Goes to the opposite lane.
09:03And he really executes
09:05that last corner,
09:06that left-hander
09:07coming out
09:08on the inside
09:09perfectly.
09:10He's kind of
09:11messed that corner up
09:12the last two laps.
09:13But man,
09:14did he get it right
09:14at the right time.
09:16Whoa!
09:16Misses the inside.
09:18He's got a shot
09:19at Joe Shimoda now.
09:20Oh yeah,
09:20100%.
09:21Watch this.
09:22He's got a shot
09:22at this win.
09:23Yeah.
09:24Yeah,
09:24the way he's going.
09:25I mean,
09:25he was two seconds faster
09:26than Drew.
09:27And just what
09:28Will was talking about,
09:29he can just be smooth.
09:31He has the pace.
09:32And as you see
09:33these guys going,
09:34JT,
09:34I think he still
09:35can get this thing done.
09:36He's got a lot
09:37of pace right now.
09:38And it's the whoops, guys.
09:40Like,
09:40he's riding the track
09:41really well.
09:41You can see
09:41how much smoother
09:42he is now.
09:43And he's kind of
09:43letting the race unfold
09:45where he was overriding
09:46earlier, as you mentioned.
09:47But the whoops last weekend,
09:48he had a clear advantage.
09:49The whoops again
09:50here this weekend.
09:51As the whoops
09:52are starting to deteriorate,
09:53he has such an edge
09:54on these guys.
09:55And I'm telling you right now,
09:57if Joe Shimoda
09:57does not pick up the pace,
09:58that is where he is going
09:59to continue making up time.
10:01Well, JT,
10:01I don't think you have
10:02timing and scoring
10:03down there,
10:04but Cole Davies
10:05ran a 119-0
10:07to Seth Hamaker's
10:09121-0,
10:11two seconds faster.
10:13That is huge.
10:14Look at that.
10:15Bottom left graphic
10:16showing you times.
10:18And this guy's flying.
10:20This is his first
10:21pro race here.
10:22Cole Davies
10:23raced here
10:24in SMX Next
10:25where Drew Adams
10:26got the better
10:26of him
10:26a couple of years ago.
10:28But he is the man
10:29on the move.
10:30Watch him here.
10:32Beautiful.
10:33Yeah, very good.
10:34And he's making time up
10:36clearly
10:36in the whoops,
10:38but I actually think
10:39where he's making
10:39more time up
10:40is due to the sand section
10:41in these corners.
10:42When he's really patient,
10:44he doesn't make
10:45too many mistakes.
10:45He makes one arc
10:46and he's able to get it.
10:47Same thing with the sand.
10:48And if he gets it right,
10:49make sure he gets in there.
10:50He's able to carry
10:51that momentum.
10:52That's where he's making it up.
10:53Make a little bit of time
10:54here and there.
10:55It looks good.
10:55Just to go back
10:56to Will's point
10:57about qualifying
10:58and Cole Davies.
10:59James, we were watching
11:00at the end
11:00and he made his feelings known.
11:02He ripped his goggles
11:03off his helmet.
11:04You could see
11:04the look on his face.
11:06He was so mad
11:07at the end of qualifying
11:08where I think
11:09he was something like
11:10sixth.
11:11And just not satisfied
11:12with his performance.
11:13Well, he's got
11:14just under four minutes
11:15plus the lap
11:16to work on Shimoda.
11:17And he's got Joe
11:18right within his sights.
11:20And then Seth Hammock
11:21is only another
11:21two and a half seconds
11:22up the track.
11:24Getting into Lapras.
11:25Man, that was close.
11:26Did you see Joe
11:27almost lose it?
11:28Looked like going
11:28into that right hander.
11:29He initiated the turn
11:31and it pushed.
11:32That front end push
11:33just a tad.
11:34That hard base on there
11:35with that sand on top.
11:36Good job saving him.
11:38But got to give
11:38a shout out to Seth.
11:39He picked up the pace.
11:41He ran a 120.
11:42So he was the fastest
11:43guy on that racetrack
11:44there.
11:44So he saw the number
11:4637 Davies coming.
11:48You know, Ricky,
11:49this race could be
11:50won or lost
11:50in the next half a lap.
11:53Perceptive he can
11:53keep going.
11:54I go back to also,
11:56I mean, compared
11:57to when we were
11:57racing, James,
11:58it's like these
11:59younger guys are
12:00so good at maintaining
12:02like a two to three
12:03second lead.
12:04It's always hard to
12:05tell if they're giving
12:05it their all.
12:06Whereas you and I,
12:07when we were racing,
12:08we wanted to have
12:09a 20 second lead
12:10at the end.
12:11So, yeah,
12:12but Seth doing a
12:13great job.
12:14Whipped it up there
12:14when he did and got
12:15that gap back to
12:16two and a half,
12:17three seconds.
12:18And there's some
12:19lappers going on also.
12:21Yeah, Seth didn't get
12:22through that sand
12:22section and look at
12:24that gap.
12:24He closed down
12:25quite a bit.
12:27Just to remind you
12:28what happened to
12:29this man who leads
12:30the race and is
12:32just two and a half
12:32minutes plus a lap
12:33away from a victory,
12:34which would be his
12:34best ever result here
12:35at Daytona.
12:36This is what happened
12:37to Hamaka earlier
12:38today.
12:39It wasn't pretty
12:41for the guy who
12:42almost won this title
12:43last year.
12:44Check this out.
12:45Yeah, when you get
12:46right there,
12:46that is so scary
12:48when you go sideways
12:49like that,
12:50but glad to see
12:51that he was okay.
12:52And remember,
12:53he had shoulder
12:54surgery in the
12:55offseason.
12:55not sure why,
12:56but his teammate
12:57Drew Adams just
12:58pulled off the track
12:59and has left this
13:00race.
13:01That's a shame for
13:02the teenager who
13:03was running so well
13:04he was in the top
13:05three at one point
13:06in time.
13:07Tell us more about
13:08Seth, Will.
13:10I was talking to
13:11Ricky before racing
13:13got started today
13:13and we were kind of
13:14reflecting on Seth's
13:15performance last
13:16weekend.
13:17Sort of Ricky's
13:18opinion, and not to
13:19put words in your
13:20mouth, Ricky, that
13:20it just wasn't quite
13:21what we were expecting
13:22out of him.
13:23He missed the podium
13:24there with a four.
13:24Well, I asked him
13:25about that today
13:26and he said,
13:27honestly, I just
13:28took what the track
13:30gave me that night.
13:31We know how bad
13:31the conditions were
13:32last weekend in
13:33Arlington.
13:35Something's happened
13:35on track.
13:36Oh, Joe Shimoda's
13:36down well.
13:37Oh, man.
13:41Look at it.
13:41You can almost see
13:42his line right here.
13:44Not sure what
13:45happened.
13:46He was probably
13:47feeling the pressure
13:48from Davies.
13:48Davies was all
13:49over him.
13:50Yeah, a lot of
13:51times if you don't
13:51get that momentum
13:52here, let's see
13:53what happens.
13:54Oh, he gets there
13:54probably buries
13:56that front end,
13:57kind of hits that
13:57pothole right there
13:58and then, yeah,
13:59there's it.
13:59There you go.
14:00It looked like he
14:01tried to turn out
14:02early a little bit
14:03and get a straighter
14:04shot down that
14:04straightaway and just,
14:05yep, buries the front.
14:07And at the moment,
14:08that has cost him
14:09a podium spot
14:10because Pierce Brown,
14:11not only Cole Davies,
14:12but Pierce Brown went
14:13by as well.
14:14Oh, brutal for Joe.
14:17I mean, consider
14:18what we, this guy's
14:20only been on a bike
14:21a couple weeks.
14:22I'm sure he's not
14:23going to be happy,
14:23but both these weekends
14:25are wins for Joe,
14:26which is how good
14:27he's been around.
14:28He's had a chance.
14:29I mean, yeah,
14:29you're talking about
14:30a guy that wasn't
14:30even sure he was
14:31going to race last
14:32weekend.
14:33And the reason why,
14:34folks, is after he won
14:35the 250 SMX World
14:36Championship, he went
14:37back home to Japan
14:38to a hero's welcome.
14:40It was an amazing
14:42period in his life.
14:43He returned to the U.S.
14:45and had a practice
14:46crash, had a training
14:47crash and broke his
14:48neck, had successful
14:50surgery, but it was
14:51a long rehab period
14:52as you can imagine.
14:53And this is still part
14:54of the comeback story.
14:56Last week, finished
14:56second in awkward,
14:58somewhat controversial
14:59circumstances with that
15:01confusion with the red
15:02flashing light.
15:03And Pierce Brown
15:04jumped past him and
15:05went on to the win.
15:07That infuriated Honda,
15:08the team, the executives,
15:11Lars Lindstrom, the team
15:12manager, and the rider
15:14especially now,
15:16unfortunately, here
15:17dropping it in the sand
15:18at the end of this
15:19250 East Main Event.
15:21Yeah, you heard Lee
15:22right.
15:23This guy broke his neck
15:24and he's out here
15:25doing his job.
15:26So still a battle
15:27right here.
15:28Cody Shock, Nate
15:29Thrasher.
15:35Looks like maybe
15:37Daxton Bennett.
15:38Yeah, Bennett's
15:39in front of him.
15:41Right there.
15:43We're on fifth
15:43position.
15:44The ride by this guy.
15:46Yeah.
15:46One of the toughest
15:47racetracks.
15:48He can hold on.
15:49This will be a great
15:49victory, but we
15:50highlighted that crash.
15:52He is one of the
15:52toughest guys out here.
15:54And it's not surprising
15:55that on one of the
15:56toughest racetracks of
15:57the year, you see
15:58Seth Handmaker out here.
15:59Well, go back to
16:00what Will said.
16:01I mean, I love what
16:03she had to say.
16:04And, you know, Seth
16:05just taking what the
16:06track gave him.
16:07but this is like a kind
16:09of ride that I was kind
16:10of expecting from him
16:11just to be up contending
16:12for the win.
16:13And we never really saw
16:14much like this.
16:16Look at that.
16:17This is huge.
16:17And the cheers on
16:18for the 23-year-old
16:20from Bainbridge,
16:22Pennsylvania.
16:24Fourth career victory
16:25on the line.
16:26And he'll be the first
16:27Monster Energy Pro Circuit
16:28Kawasaki rider
16:29to win here in five years
16:31since Cameron McAdoo
16:32won back in 21.
16:34This is huge.
16:36I just think about
16:36ever since last year
16:38he invested in himself,
16:40made the change.
16:41He's been a completely
16:42different rider.
16:43You think I've closely
16:43won, almost won the
16:44championship.
16:45Think about how
16:46any race victory is special.
16:49But as the two of you
16:50know all too well,
16:51to win at the
16:52World Center of Racing
16:54under the lights
16:55here in Daytona,
16:57this is a special time
16:58Seth Handmaker
16:59wins Daytona.
17:04And Kawasaki breaks
17:05the Yamaha stranglehold
17:07on this year's
17:08250 competition.
17:10Mitch Payton,
17:11well done.
17:13So happy for that guy,
17:14Mitch.
17:15You ain't joking.
17:20Look at that.
17:28That's a fan experience.
17:30I was about to say that.
17:31You think when they
17:31purchased them tickets
17:32they were going to get this?
17:33that's why you need to
17:34come to the Supercross.
17:35That's what you get here.
17:36Awesome.
17:36Congrats, Seth.
17:39That's so special.
17:42First one in the season.
17:43First one at Daytona.
17:47Time's that point up too.
17:49And Lee, you asked,
17:50I mean, what makes
17:50Daytona so special?
17:52It's that right there
17:53and what you're able to do
17:54and how you can celebrate
17:56here.
17:59Seth Handmaker.
18:02Daytona, Daytona winner.
18:03Daytona winner.
